View Full Version : IP adresses..can you help
Captain Pugwash Mar 07, 2001, 03:08 AM When I start a multiplayer game as host, Civ2 gives me the IP address and asks to confirm it. However, when I run www.simflex.com/ip.htm (http://www.simflex.com/ip.htm) it gives me a different IP address. Does anybody else get this happening ? Which IP address should I use ?
So far neither IP seems to allow others to join. How do I get this to work ?
Hellllllllpppppp !!!!!
Captain Pugwash Mar 07, 2001, 04:20 AM I have a game going right now.
simflex says the IP address is 152.163.201.54
Anyone care to see if they can join it ?
I dont intend to finish this game...just testing
Captain Pugwash Mar 07, 2001, 04:54 AM Oh no !
I just checked simflex again and it gives a different IP address now although I have not logged off ! How can an IP address change during a session ? Looks like I wont be hosting any games http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif
Am I the only one with this problem ?
I did successfully join somebody else's game a few days ago so there cant be much wrong with the Civ version.
Perplexed.
CornMaster Mar 07, 2001, 08:45 AM I've never heard of a changing IP address in the same session. If you have both a network card and dial-up connection, Civ 2 will ofter show the wrong IP address (At least it does for me). The only other explaination would be that the you have a firewall or a scrambler or something that is altering your IP address. (Or the page could be messing up.)
If you have Win95/98 you can type "winipcfg" when you click "Start" then "Run". It will open a window that has you ip address of your "PPP Adapter" This is your current IP for your dial-up connection. Anything else is for Networking and is not needed. If you use WinME/2000......the command may be "ipconfig" and it give a similar display except in a command box.
If you need anymore help.....I'm here http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

Captain Pugwash Mar 09, 2001, 05:30 PM Well, I have run 4 test games now as host and after about an hour I check the IP address and it has changed in all of them.
I contacted my ISP (AOL) about this changing of IP addresses but their fix didn't work.
So I cant host a game at the moment but I will be around at 10:00AM GMT tomorrow if anyone wants to host a ToT game. I can still join a game OK http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
Captain Pugwash Mar 10, 2001, 07:54 AM Here's some more info.
I located 2 more websites (in addition to simflex) which claim to tell you what your current IP address is. Guess what...all 3 sites give different numbers !!
My conclusion is that if you use dial-up and your ISP is AOL then there is no reliable way to find your IP address. Considering that AOL is the biggest ISP, this should affect a lot of people.
Captain Pugwash Mar 11, 2001, 05:14 PM Good news at last !!
I believe I may have solved this problem.
I just need to test out the solution. If it works then I CAN host MP games after all.
Yay

Thanks Cornmaster. That solved the problem that my buddy and I were having. I could host no problem but for some reason he couldn't. His network card was the problem just like you said - civ was giving him the wrong IP

It's In The Way That You Use It

The IP address Civ 2 gives me is my Network Card address. So if I try to continue (and give the IP address to others on the internet), it doesn't work. That's why I have to run winipcfg (or ipconfig) and get the IP address for my PPP adapter. Then I put that address into Civ 2 and give to others and it works fine.
Don't try to over-simplify here.
