View Full Version : New Unit: Libyan Warrior (September 20, 2004)
utahjazz7 Sep 20, 2004, 01:47 PM This is a unit I threw together while finishing up the Siege Archer. It is based on a request I saw a few weeks back, but it doesn't exactly match it. Also, the attack animation isn't the hottest, but there aren't any huge problems.
No,it's not the finest piece of work, but it's pretty cool at the same time . . . least in my opinion.
WARNING: In the death animation, you will not see a dead body pull its lifeless self up off of the ground and start jumping.
WARNING: He is ill, and the illness causes his skin to appear yellow.

Ekmek Sep 20, 2004, 01:51 PM Nice, can anyone post an ingame shot?
Sword_Of_Geddon Sep 20, 2004, 01:53 PM  Thats funny....I was expecting a Numindian Unit of some kind, this guy looks like he's from the Orient....lol.
Any luck with the Poly Swordsman btw?
skam0073 Sep 20, 2004, 02:43 PM Well,he looks perfectly healthy to me.;)Very cool helmet and I think he can be used in a lot of ways. Thanks utah:)
Dom Pedro II Sep 20, 2004, 02:59 PM Hot diggity! This unit looks really cool! :goodjob:
EDIT: Maybe good as a Carthaginian Warrior? (Would that be the closest Civ to associate this with in the epic game?)
Kinboat Sep 20, 2004, 03:34 PM Cool... At least we know he isn't a zombie :D Once he's down he stays down...
I think Carthage would be the closest civ... They (and the Egyptians at times) used Libyan mercenaries... If I'm remembering right.

Yes, this is a point that we shouldn't overlook. ;)
About which civilization he should serve, I don't know. I found the "concept art" in a thread asking for a few different early ancient age units. Perhaps the requester, LBPB, could explain what he wanted this guy for.
LBPB Sep 20, 2004, 04:54 PM hey that's not so far from the original :goodjob:

Here is a short description: How to cure the yellow skin of Utahs units.
Needed programs: Civ3Flc, Paint Shop Pro 9 (8, 7, ...?) and a file tool
- Load Unit FLC > Civ3Flc
- Civ3Flc: Palette > Export Palette > Fix.pal (Jasc Animation Shop *.pal)
- Copy Fix.pal > 'PSP directory' > Palette
- PSP: New image
- PSP: Choose Image > Palette > Load Palette
- Load Palette: Apply Fix.pal (Nearest color matching) > OK
- PSP: Choose Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Hue Map
- Hue Map: Reset to Default
- Hue Map: Hue shift 72° > 0° > OK
- PSP: Choose Image > Palette > Save Palette
- Save Palette: Type Fix1 > Save
- Goto 'PSP directory' > Palette
- Rename Fix1.PspPalette to Fix1.pal (only PSP 8, 9)
- Civ3Flc: Palette > Import Palette > Select Fix1.pal
- Civ3Flc: Save
Now he has a healthy skin! :) (Hmm, the smiley looks ill too.)
Midnight Piper Sep 21, 2004, 03:13 AM Hmm, I'm using psp 7 - my attempt to follow those instructions just gave him a pretty nasty looking red rash all over his body, in addition to the yellow skin... what we do to these poor units...
Midnight Piper Sep 21, 2004, 04:22 AM I think you've just shown me my new favourite toy [dance] - the joys of reskinning :D
tjedge1 Sep 21, 2004, 06:21 AM I love this unit. I think I actually have a place for it.

Whew! I left him on the CFC doorstep just hoping someone would take him in.
There was some question earlier about what to use him for. Did you add him to the epic game?

Hey! I like that you've made it look African - I could use that as an African UU of some sort - any chance you could post a dark-skinned version?
Antiochus VII Sep 21, 2004, 10:11 AM I think the African version would look really good - I'm sure we could find it a home too :)
Cimbri Sep 21, 2004, 10:51 AM Awesome Utah! So bloody awesome!!! :yeah:
Thank you, I've been using Native American units as Libyans for a while. :D
Midnight Piper Sep 21, 2004, 12:56 PM any chance you could post a dark-skinned version?
Can do. I used a screenshot of the flic for the small pediaicon and the units32 icon - the large pediaicon needed to be recolored (too big for a flic screenshot), so it's not as accurate.
Edit: I thouight I might use him for an Ethiopian/Abyssinian warrior myself.
Aluminium Sep 21, 2004, 05:32 PM Midnight Piper!
TopGun Sep 21, 2004, 08:35 PM Utah.. very nice unit! Excellent (as usual...) ;)
Mithadan Sep 22, 2004, 04:04 PM Right on, utah!
There was a Libyan dynasty of Egypt at one time, otherwise the Lybians were always being a pain to the Egyptians...so I guess Carthage would be the best choice for the epic game? Make it the unit of theirs that precedes the Punic wars or something...
unscratchedfoot Sep 22, 2004, 04:35 PM I like the yellow skin. A lot of Libyan people at the time of Carthage had yellow liver from chewing in a type of herb called chapparal which they believed protected them from harm since the chapparal is both the oldest plant in the world as well as a great producer of yellow liver. And once affected, the yellowness would then show up around the eyes and then gradually expand over the whole body as the chewer continued his hobby.

Thank-you very much for doing that :goodjob: . It looks great  !
HooDoo Oct 08, 2004, 11:37 AM MP,
I like your "reskinning" of UtahJazz7's Libyan Warrior to black. In the image you posted, it looks like you also did a pallete change to alter the skin of the original Libyan Warrior from a yellow to more of a "toasty light brown" color that is closer to that of the image posted by LBPB. If you did, could you post that rendering as well? I'm sure I as well as many others could find a use for both your black Libyan Warrior and a more "Berber" shaded Warrior. (and if you haven't done a "Berber" shaded Warrior, could you?)
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 08, 2004, 06:59 PM Are you sure your not confusing Libya with Nubia? The Numidians and Nubians were similiar in that both countries were known for their mercanarys.
HooDoo Oct 08, 2004, 07:18 PM SoG,
I'm not referring to the black "Libyan Warrior" from an historic perspective. Rather, I'm using the term to refer to the "reskinned" Libyan Warrior that MP rendered. I think a more "Berber" colored rendering would be more accurate for the real Libyan Warrior. I will use MP's version for a black African civilization (it may not be historically accurate placed in a black African civ, but I don't care -- it is one cool looking unit).
I agree with you on the Numidian/Nubian distinction. However, I think the distinction is lost on Firaxis. I remember reading the early press about some of the new units that were going to come out with C3C, especially the Numidian Mercenary; I was pretty bummed when I finally saw that Firaxis' version of the "Numidian" Mercenary was black. They completely missed the boat in my opinion.

I actually made seven palletes for this unit. I liked palletes 3, 4 and 5 pretty well, 4 being the dark skinned version I ended up using. I still have the other palletes if you want a version of them. Take a look at palletes 3 and 5 and let me know which you like best:
HooDoo Oct 09, 2004, 11:20 AM MP,
Both of them look great! From your post, it looks like 5 might be perfect, but I like 3 also. Could you post both of them, if it is not too much trouble? That way, I can look at all three renderings in game. Who knows? I might place two of the Warriors in my regular civilizations, and then have the third be a mercenary available from one of the minor civ resources! I think I have told you this in another post, but if not ... I have completely tossed the original Civ III civilization structure out the window and replaced them with 7 "red" race civs, and six civs each of "yellow", "black", "white", and "brown" races. And my 50 minor civs are broken up into 10 of each race (I'm thinking about adding more, possibly). I am trying to make unique or semi-unique unit lines in each civilization, which makes room for a whole bunch of units of different colors. So, however many renderings you care to share, I'm sure that I, along with a host of others, can find uses for most of them.
BTW, if you have made any "reskinning" changes to other units, would you be interested in posting them? I've still got lots of open slots in my unit lines. :D
ShiroKobbure Dec 31, 2005, 01:36 PM sorry to bump but Midnight Piper could you upload number 5 i need some barbian units for nothern Africa
ShiroKobbure Mar 16, 2006, 04:48 PM can you release the props and clothing from this figure?
