View Full Version : Unit: Clipper (Oct 1st, 2004)
aaglo Sep 30, 2004, 03:56 PM Hi, long time no sea (units from me).
Here are two versions of clipper ship - the 19th century grand merchant ship.
Here's the bit more 'realistic' version (blank sails).
Clipper (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/Clipper.zip)
... and here is the bit more 'civ3-like' version (sails with blue stripes).
ClipperAlt (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/ClipperAlt.zip)
UPDATE!
I noticed that there is a flaw in the run animation in both ships - the jib-sails (those 'lanteen' sails between the masts) movement during the run-anim is completely wrong. Sorry about the mistake :)
Here are the correct run animations for both ships:
Updated run animations (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/ClipperRuns.zip)
Attached are a run-demo of the clipper (ClipperDemo.gif), and samples of the civilopedia pics (Clippers.gif).
Enjoy! :)

Smoking mirror Sep 30, 2004, 04:06 PM Yay, looks wonderfull!
been waiting for this one for a while, could do with a steam powered upgrade, but I'm certainly not going to complain. :)

Digger532 Sep 30, 2004, 06:13 PM This is awesome, more great work from the ship builder
HooDoo Sep 30, 2004, 06:57 PM Aaglo,
Yet another beautiful addition to our Civ oceans. My ancient seas would be pretty empty if it were not for your varied, beautiful, and numerous creations (this is me being both truthful and also buttering you up some as well).
Are you open to taking requests at the moment? I have a couple of pictures of a Totora reed boat from South America. Some archeologists believe that the Tiwanaku Pyramids were built in part by huge stone blocks, some weighing up to 40 tons, that were shipped 90 kilometers across Lake Titicaca on these reed boats. The prow (I think that is what the front is called?) of the boat had the head of an animal or bird on it, made out of reeds as well. The picture of the scale model has the head of a condor on it, which was a powerful symbol for the people of this pre-Incan civilization.
In 2002, archeological reconstructionists successfully built a totora reed boat and ferried a huge stone block across the lake. In addition, other archeological reconstructionists built the "Viracocha" a 20-ton reed ship, and sailed it from Chile to the Easter Islands. A "Viracocha II" is currently either being built or has been completed. I believe the plan is to sail from the Easter Islands to Australia.
I know that reed boats were used also in Egypt, and probably in other parts of the ancient world. A reed ship would be a much needed, and much appreciated, addition to the ancient maritime Civ community. If you were interested in doing this, I would be forever in your debt, and I would be glad to do any and all research that you would need throughout this project.
IbnSina Sep 30, 2004, 07:14 PM I was just thinking yesterday that we had seen nothing new from you for a while. I was worried. Hooray - you're back! Beautiful ship!

utahjazz7 Sep 30, 2004, 09:06 PM That's really a beautiful unit. Absolutely brilliant.
vbraun Sep 30, 2004, 09:54 PM I absolutly love it!
waldoa Sep 30, 2004, 10:13 PM It's great aaglo. My civ-oceans of all eras would be much emptier without yur units.

Ok, here it is (an aerial photo of the town Hamina. The name Hamina means harbor.)

LBPB Oct 01, 2004, 03:17 AM Wow !!!!
:goodjob:
10lire Oct 01, 2004, 04:27 AM Wonderful unit aaglo!! :clap::clap:
Here is a short civilopedia entry:
Clipper ships were born in the shipyards of Baltimore around 1820. They had completely new and original naval characteristics. These included a long and narrow hull, a sharp, cutting bow, a low freeboard, a streamlined stern, and a deep draft.
Where can we insert the Clipper in the upgrade line? Between Galleon and Transport? I also don't imagine the tech and the stats of this unit
aaglo Oct 01, 2004, 04:33 AM Tech: Nationalism?
Stats: A/D/M = 1/1/6, transports 5 units?
Drift Oct 01, 2004, 04:42 AM Looks great.
If I were to start a rumour now about your retirement, would I be exaggerating/thinking wishfully? ;)
Mithadan Oct 01, 2004, 04:43 AM A gorgeous unit, aaglo. No more galleons transforming into landing craft for me!
BTW, that reed boat request sounds pretty cool, too!
10lire Oct 01, 2004, 04:43 AM Good for me! Thanx a lot!
Ukas Oct 01, 2004, 05:41 AM Excellent unit.. makes me want to sail away on it. :goodjob:
Ares de Borg Oct 01, 2004, 06:07 AM Great work, as always. ;-)
Rufus T. Firefly Oct 01, 2004, 10:02 AM Oh, thanks Aaglo for the instantly works! Now I can trade with my Indian colonies!
Colonel Kraken Oct 01, 2004, 12:50 PM Dios mio. Fantastico!
You've made mine look like an embarrassment.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 01, 2004, 02:27 PM Yours wasn't that bad Colonial, besides, it had a purpose, as a good filler unit.
Amenhotep7 Oct 01, 2004, 03:26 PM :wow:
Quite simply your best unit yet! Shall you ever cease to amaze?:goodjob:
Dom Pedro II Oct 01, 2004, 10:16 PM Yeah, Colonel, you're definitely being WAY too hard on yourself... yours was truly amazing for cut and paste. I'd say probably the single greatest cut and paste job I've ever seen. Indeed, I would've used it in a second if it'd been completed. Well, now we have a solution to that problem! :D
Louis XXIV Oct 02, 2004, 08:19 AM Looks absolutely great.
What are your plans for your next ship
Old Ironsides
TopGun Oct 02, 2004, 10:51 AM Aaglo, a masterpiece yet again!
Slave of CIV Oct 02, 2004, 01:00 PM Mmmh! Beautiful work!
Vuldacon Oct 03, 2004, 02:35 AM Great Looking Ship aaglo...Beautiful. Looks like it is going through some rough Ocean in the preview. Nice Work :goodjob:
aaglo Oct 03, 2004, 05:47 AM UPDATE!
I noticed a flaw in the run animation on both clippers - the jib-sails ('lanteen' sails between the masts) movement is a bit crazy. Now they are like they were intended. See the thread starter post for new run-demo and for the updated files.
Sorry for the inconvinience :)
Vuldacon Oct 03, 2004, 11:59 AM Excellent aaglo ...The Run animation looks much better without the jib sails radically bouncing. Thanks for the correction, it adds to the smooth beauty of your Wonderful creation. The Clipper is a Very Esthetic ship and you have done a superb job with the animation...Love the realistic "movement on the High Seas" affect you achieved along with the overall beauty. :thanx:
CarnDaWoods Oct 03, 2004, 10:15 PM Truly, a magnificent job. I have not got around to downloading any mods at all, but you have inspired me to have a look and see what is around.

Clipper ships were the Concordes of their day - they were very fast by the standards of the time, but had small cargo holds, and were never heavily armed. Thus, I'm going to use:
Nationalism: 0/0/6, transports only 3.
They will rely on speed to stay away from warships. Thanks again!
Dom Pedro II Oct 03, 2004, 10:42 PM Clipper ships were the Concordes of their day - they were very fast by the standards of the time, but had small cargo holds, and were never heavily armed. Thus, I'm going to use:

They will rely on speed to stay away from warships. Thanks again!
Hmm... I don't really feel comfortable taking a hit in the transport capacity department... I'm going to make it the middle man between the Galleon and the Transport. Basically, even if the cargohold is smaller, there might be more of them since a unit is an indefinite number of troops/vessels/vehicles.
kevincompton Oct 10, 2004, 09:13 PM I bow to your skills oh mighty ship constructor! May you prosper!

 I don't know what happens to a naval unit with Attack and Defense = 0 if attacked; is it "captured" like a ground unit?? Sorry IbnSina, but I think is not realistic the Clipper having A/D=0 where the Curragh has A/D=1. Don't you?
I also agree with Dom Pedro II for the cargo..
thestonesfan Oct 11, 2004, 07:52 AM If it has 0 defense, it just sinks.
Like a scout just dies.
