View Full Version : New Unit: Mayan Ah Kuy (October 1, 2004)
utahjazz7 Oct 01, 2004, 09:39 AM http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/AHKUYL.gif
This unit here was originally requested by Dom Pedro II, and it is based on his concept art, which can be found in the thread requesting the unit (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=99487). In that thread there is also some information which could be used to create a CivilaPedia entry. DPII also suggested the name of Ah-Kuy, but I wasn't sure if CivIII would accept the hyphen so I altered it to Ah Kuy. Apparently it means warrior.
The sounds are linked to the Gallic Swordsman, but I'm not sure if they fit or not. I haven't tested the unit in-game, so if there are problems of it not functioning properly let me know please. I did notice in FLICster that the unit--like most units--looks best with darker colors. The really bright colors don't look so good with the orange, red, and yellow parts of the unit. Also, the unit is sized properly, I believe. He will seem taller than most units though, because he has that orange, carved animal head on top of his own head.If you want to nit-pic, just know that it won't change anything. :)

Yabanjin Oct 01, 2004, 09:49 AM Looking good. The more Meso-American units available the better.
Ukas Oct 01, 2004, 10:31 AM High class stuff, thanks :goodjob:
Dom Pedro II Oct 01, 2004, 11:15 AM Ah! Great! Something told me I should check out the forums :)
Fantastic job!
Madeira Oct 01, 2004, 12:26 PM Great job! Thanks a bunch!
RedAlert Oct 01, 2004, 12:51 PM Yes! great job :)
We can never have enough of those good ol' Mesoamerican units (And it's about time the Maya got a truly unique one)
Thank you!
Fixer07 Oct 01, 2004, 01:19 PM Great unit!
Could you tell us whats next??
Fixer07 Oct 01, 2004, 01:31 PM Great unit!
Could you tell us whats next??
Kinboat Oct 01, 2004, 01:47 PM Ah-some... :D
aaglo Oct 01, 2004, 01:51 PM wow, he's... colourful :D :D
Mithadan Oct 01, 2004, 02:07 PM Right on, utah!
(Can anybody tell me why the Javelin Thrower isn't a good Mayan UU, and if it isn't, what I should use it for instead?)
RedAlert Oct 01, 2004, 02:11 PM The javelin thrower is more of an all inclusive Mesoamerican unit than it is distinctly mayan. And so it's best that all Mesoamerican civs get it. I'd say the javelin thrower would be best as an archer replacement.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 01, 2004, 02:33 PM I miss the way you used to do your Civilipedia pictures Utahjazz...think your magnificient work with the Inti Warrior... my god
utahjazz7 Oct 01, 2004, 02:49 PM Thank you all for the kind words! :D
Great unit!
Could you tell us whats next??
Well, I'm going to try something new. Well, no, that's not entirely true. I'm working on a Germanic Swordsman unit. But, instead of using the Poser4 male model as the base figure, I'm going to use Kinboat's latest paperdoll figure.
I miss the way you used to do your Civilipedia pictures Utahjazz...think your magnificient work with the Inti Warrior... my god
Hmm . . . what do you mean? What's different about them? Tell me about the good ole days. :)
Xen Oct 01, 2004, 02:55 PM cool stuff :D
Aluminium Oct 01, 2004, 07:03 PM Top-class unit!
tjedge1 Oct 01, 2004, 09:58 PM Excellent work utah. Very cool unit.
Dom Pedro II Oct 01, 2004, 10:14 PM utah, glad to see you're switching to the Paperdoll! :goodjob: I want to make this baby the Civ3 standard.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 02, 2004, 01:46 AM Hmm . . . what do you mean? What's different about them? Tell me about the good ole days. :)
Well, the figure was closer(bigger), and positioned so you could see all the great detail with the unit. Your Ah Kuy Civilipedia Large would do well to use this method, plus I'd make it so the shield's design is visible.
Your Inti Warrior is the best Civilipedia Large I've ever seen I think. Kinboat's work is pretty close though...
utahjazz7 Oct 03, 2004, 09:15 PM Well, in an effort to appease Sword_of_Geddon, I have made a new pediaIcon for this unit. Hopefully, this one is better than the more static orignal.

Dom Pedro II Oct 03, 2004, 09:16 PM Cool beans. Looks good. I'm going to use it, but the other one was just fine too.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 03, 2004, 11:22 PM A diffinite improvement. You can see all of his fantastic detail now.. :goodjob: I love the unit Utahjazz, and I downloaded it as soon as I saw this thread. But you'd be surprised what a good Pedia Icon can do for your game... ;) The new one diffinitely desplays your skills as a unit maker Utah..
Digger532 Oct 04, 2004, 12:37 AM Outstanding unit, I will probably use this as a Medieval infantry replacement for the Incas, as I am alreasy using the Firaxis Jaguar Warrior as a general meso swordsman, This unit looks good moves well and I really like the Shield bash attack.
Nice work
HooDoo Oct 04, 2004, 12:57 AM Utahjazz7,
That is flat-out the best Pedia Icon ever made. Period. End of discussion. With the old one, I didn't see the feathers along the bottom of the shield. I didn't see the trailing feather? thingy on the headpiece. I couldn't tell exactly what kind of weapon your guy was wielding. Now ... Wow! With this Pedia Icon, we really CAN tell the book by its cover!
Balam Oct 08, 2004, 09:03 AM Thanks for the new UU; the Javelin Thrower should have been Aztec and the Jaguar the Maya anyway, never did make any sense. But this UU fits Maya even better (and coming from Balam that's a good thing)...now where did I put my obsidian blade anyway...
oiled snake Oct 11, 2004, 01:31 AM Good Job!!!
Is there any animation of it?
:) :goodjob:
aaglo Oct 12, 2004, 03:37 AM Hehe...
Is it just me, or does the civilopedia pic dude have white skiing goggles on his forehead :D ;) :p
utahjazz7 Oct 12, 2004, 10:37 PM Yeah, it's just you. :)
