View Full Version : Some IDEAS... for SOMEONE... about BOATS
Redking Oct 06, 2004, 09:28 PM This one is a baghala (also baghla, baghlah), a large dhow of the Arabian seas, with a square stern, 100-300 tons.

Redking Oct 06, 2004, 09:58 PM This one, the mtepe, is an east African boat that carries something like 30 tons, is typical of the smaller sewn craft of the western Indian Ocean, and would make a nice flavor version of the curragh for Egypt, Zulu, India, Sumer, and maybe other civs.

No idea Oct 06, 2004, 10:00 PM They look like cool ships, they would make nice additions.
Wyrmshadow Oct 06, 2004, 10:26 PM But unfortunately this thread is against forum rules. You cannot make a thread thatis directed at a certain person in C&C. If you have a request, PM him and put it in the UNit Request thread. You just can't have threads like this with a person's name in it.
Redking Oct 06, 2004, 10:26 PM The totora, an Incan/Aymara vessel, I suppose also a replacement for the curragh. It was made of reeds, and I guess they floated them on Titicaca and maybe other lakes. Most are very small. Here's a hypothetical large one, meant to carry large stones from quarry to construction.

This next picture is a double-hulled one, perhaps an even better variant, just needs a bit more scale and a bigger sail, and would perhaps be a nice introductory coastal-going vessel for Inca/Maya/Aztec civs, especially with the condor prow from the picture above.

Dom Pedro II Oct 06, 2004, 10:28 PM Well... hopefully the name can be changed rather than just deleting it...

Fine, whatever. I'll change the thread title, but it's ridiculous, because I'm basically answering his own query as in his preview thread, in which he asks for pictures, but I decided not to bombard that thread, and instead give myself an ongoing thread as I generate these ideas. You can pretend that the thread is aimed at everyone, but we all know who it's aimed at, as is every request for ancient vessels. As for PMing him, the point of posting the thread is to get other people's ideas moving also, which is, after all, the point of the forum.
There's more I would like to say but won't.

Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 06, 2004, 10:42 PM I like all those ships and think they all should become Civ units, especially the Incan one. I didn't even realize that the Incans had a Navy....

I don't think they did. I think they probably didn't need watercraft for war purposes. But in Civ they might.

Dom Pedro II Oct 06, 2004, 10:47 PM We still need some concept work for fictional ships... that'd be suuwweeet.
The Incan ships, btw, were used on Lake Titicaca.... it MIGHT have been used for war purposes, but more likely than not, it was for fishing.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 06, 2004, 10:51 PM Well, weren't boats orginally used for fishing before war entered the picture?
Dom Pedro II Oct 06, 2004, 10:59 PM Mostly... that and water-skiing.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 06, 2004, 11:06 PM Water sking? Your funny DP...
BTW...its been so long since one of your units appeared here.....so very long...
Dom Pedro II Oct 06, 2004, 11:43 PM Yeah... I've been really busy lately... I'm fatigued you might say... but I have been working on stuff.
BTW, I'd also like to remark that I've been screaming from the rooftops for somebody to make Japanese ships. Pretty much every time aaglo makes a new unit I say, Hey! What about Japanese ships?... and I'm still waiting... ;)
aaglo Oct 07, 2004, 04:45 AM Cool. :)
I knew (and have thought too) about that incan reed boat. But to be more specific, what kind of ship could be used by the aztecs?
I've heard/read that the Mayans were most 'seafaring' people in the mesoamerica, but I think they used only canoes.
Also for the fictive parts: Middle-ages for the mesoamericans? Bigger canoes&reed boats - or like catamaran-type ships (with mesoamerican decoration motives)?
aaglo Oct 07, 2004, 04:48 AM Pretty much every time aaglo makes a new unit I say, Hey! What about Japanese ships?... and I'm still waiting... ;)
Use a chinese one instead - atleast as a placeholder (possibly for eternity). :p
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 07, 2004, 01:35 PM Aaglo doesn't like you DPII, either that or he wants you to make them yourself... :p
Dom Pedro II Oct 07, 2004, 01:45 PM Use a chinese one instead - atleast as a placeholder (possibly for eternity). :p
Argh! They look totally different! But if you don't want to make them, that's your choice of course.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 07, 2004, 01:53 PM Well DP, once all you current units are done, you can do the Japanese ships. Maybe Aaglo could help you...
Dom Pedro II Oct 07, 2004, 02:29 PM But you make an assumption that I have the capability to make these boats... I pose existing figures and props... I'm only just starting to make my own, and a ship would be a rather difficult thing for me to make.
Sword_Of_Geddon Oct 07, 2004, 02:45 PM You could get the models from elsewhere though, perhaps Aaglo could give you some to work with..
Dom Pedro II Oct 07, 2004, 02:51 PM Frayed Knot... as far as I know POV Ray can't export files as OBJs or 3DS.... besides, if he's going to go to the trouble to make the ships, he might as well just do the whole thing.... And as for acquiring them elsewhere, I haven't seen any kind of Japanese ships available anywhere.
Mr. Do Oct 07, 2004, 03:44 PM Boats, eh? And aaglo too? Well just to show he'll never escape, he could make this simple little boat:

That was my other purpose in this thread. So... give me some time.
