View Full Version : Rookies vs. Pros
Dogberry_Old Mar 14, 2001, 03:16 AM Thunderfall told me that any Civ Pro can take down a coalition of 2 or 3 middling to new players... I say not ? What say you ?
King...all x1.. Hordes & 50x80 random map..huts..chat from start.. all 7 tribes ( incl AIs )... "dead" players can come back in place of AIs & so on.
Test of Time..Original & I host... ( I am simply a good player..certainly not an "expert".)
Cimfindriel Mar 14, 2001, 09:31 AM I am apt to agree with Thunderfall. Even when a group of great Civ players go to battle there is always one or two players that dominate let alone a game in which a fanatic plays three newbies, or middle weight civers. I would even go as far as to say that even with a bad start and some really great organization on your part that the Pro would come out on top. Unfortunately, I am not this person otherwise I would love to play. This should be interesting to follow if you get it off the ground. Good luck! http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

Johan511 Mar 14, 2001, 03:54 PM I could beat up to 3 mid-level players, and probably 5 or 6 newbies, on my own.
kaak Mar 14, 2001, 07:42 PM agreed. one of the better players could easily take out ranks of newbies, but no reason for ai's...
markusf Mar 14, 2001, 08:02 PM lol, sounds easy. I could take on 3 or 4 seasoned players with those settings and win.
EyesOfNight Mar 14, 2001, 09:25 PM hehehhe Markus you played me 1 on 1 with those exact same settings and you lost twice in a row. What is your idea of a seasoned player?
markusf Mar 14, 2001, 09:27 PM hahaha, losing and quiting out of disgust are 2 different things. Lets play again if your not chicken? And this time no more stupid rules like not allowed to build caravans.
Captain Pugwash Mar 14, 2001, 11:01 PM CivPro ? harharhar..in your dreams !
There are no CivPros. You cant award yourself a title, you have to earn it through results.
Those who are new here may have played hundreds of games of Civ for all you know.

True, this is all very relative, but there are Civ Pros. When I say newbie it is a reference to a person who has just started playing Civ and not a person who has just joined Civfanatics. There is a difference and I don't think that I have to point it out.
With all this said, I too agree with you Captain, "...you have to earn it through results."

EyesOfNight Mar 15, 2001, 01:09 AM Ok, fine. YOu quit before you even got trade. If we had played with trade you would have been in alot of trouble. You're not the only one that knows how to use caravans.
markusf Mar 15, 2001, 10:10 AM bs, first game you had a bunch of free tech, and you got rep by 2000 bc both games. I didn't even have a government by 500 ad both times. Second game i got all damn plains on a island. I have never gotten so many none government path techs, i believe it was 8 or 9techs.

drake Mar 15, 2001, 10:41 AM DAMN! What a load of hot air we got going in here. I consider myself an "average" player and I don't think any of you could beat 3 players of my calibre VS one of you.
It's a good thing you don't need a door to get into these forums, cuz most of you would get stuck when you try and stick your big head through the doorway.
Talk about arrogance.

Cimfindriel Mar 15, 2001, 12:44 PM markusf aren't you on about the same level as Agharta, because I think a Pro would be someone who could easily crush Agharta...and I think that Aggy would agree. Hope I'm not presuming too much by having said all this. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/blushing.gif
Any hoot..Dogberry I am about average if not a little below and I would love to play if you can find a Pro to play...someone reputed to be the best is simply not enough. You need someone who can really walk the walk http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
How about you Eyes...up for it?

markusf Mar 15, 2001, 05:22 PM Agharta? hahaha
I have one ongoing game with him in it. Lets see there are 7 players, diety 1x 1x. its 450 bc, i have the most cities and i have 4 wonders completed and another 2 wonders done in about 4 turns. No one else has a single wonder built yet.
players include
Carnide
Agharta
war4ever
zylka
diety
and someone i can't remember. I would say those people qualify as better then average.
markusf Mar 15, 2001, 05:25 PM Also didn't Agharta start a thread here whining about how i took 15 cities in 5 turns? and killed off him and SF
EyesOfNight Mar 15, 2001, 05:48 PM Markus did I mention I put both the saves in a trophy file? Did I mention that war4ever agreed with me when I said the first game was fair? I agree, the second game you had no chance because of the island. But the first game was about as fair as you can get. You are still clueless. You might be really good in multiplayer games markus, but you aren't going to beat me in a duel. No matter what setting. Live with it. And stop trying to over exaggerate these games. The first game you got just as many advanced tribes if not more. And you stole republic from me early on!! You have absolutely no excuse. First game you got out played, just admit it. Cimfindriel I only play duels, not multiplayer games.
And just to show that you are clueless as to why you lost, you even accused me of cheating in those games. Give it up man.

markusf Mar 15, 2001, 07:59 PM just shut up and play, this time i host.
Dogberry_Old Mar 15, 2001, 11:54 PM I see a lot of people "talking the talk".. but I don't see anybody "walking the walk". Which "Pro" have I got to step forward for this ? Where are all the club newcomers at ? C'mon guys n' gals ... step up to the plate !
Btw.. Eyes & Markus.. please start another thread to bicker on. Let's keep this one focused !
Be informed however ..that if you are agreeing to this game..which I am going to be naming "Gullivier"... I want you to be in for the long haul.. & go as far toward completion as humanly possible.

EyesOfNight Mar 16, 2001, 02:31 AM HAHAHAHA!!! And you think somehow by you hosting you'll be able to win? I think that's an admittal of the fact that you have no clue as to why you lost. Go back and look at the saves. I have a save if you want it. Maybe you'll be able to understand how I beat you.
drake Mar 16, 2001, 08:41 AM More Eyes rantings
<img src="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cwm33.gif" height=75 width=100>
[This message has been edited by drake (edited March 16, 2001).]
markusf Mar 16, 2001, 01:09 PM stop ranting and play. There isn't anyone who can win if you get rep 2000 years after the other guy in a duel. I would have lost the race to all the wonders.
Dogberry_Old Mar 16, 2001, 02:36 PM The way this thread has gone.. illustrates just what is wrong with some of the people active in the CIV gaming community.. I truly can't say that I didn't expect it. It does sadden me somewhat.. as long as this attitude of petty strife & immature ranting continues the community will go nowhere.. I want the newcomers that read this post to take heed. However, not all of us are like this. In my opinion.. this is a result of too much playing the AI at crucial stages in a person's development... & a certain inbred quality among some players that have been around too long & should go find more useful things to do with their lives.
I have the feeling that this is not going anywhere.. but I will try again. So far I have 2 good to average players here. Cim & myself.. do I have anymore ? Do I have a Pro that wants to step forward ? The Pro gets to "password" his side.. the others, incl myself do not. ( I anticipate somewhat of a floating crap game "feel" to this as we go along ).
Markus, Eyes & Drake are all disqualified & there is no reason for them to post here again.
I will tell you three & anyone else that cares to listen.. I am an old gaming Dog Soldier & I will roll right over you guys.. I have seen all of this before & I know how to get around it. All that it takes is desire & ability.

Mindfields Mar 18, 2001, 12:03 PM Drake, i think it's better to ignore eyes. He is f***ing arrogant and he doesn't do any good in forums. And there are tons of players who think the same about him as i do.
Beating 2 or 3 newbies isn't very hard if you are a average player.
Marfus is the best player i know(who never cheated as far as i know). I think you can beat 2 or 3 average in a single game.
Hell-Raiser Mar 18, 2001, 02:03 PM Well if you want newbie's here you got one!!
myself, still need to play my first game! (multyplayer) I think i s*ck at this game, (however I most times win with nowmal civ)
so if any of you guys want to help to learn it to play on multyplayer I really thank you!
markusf Mar 19, 2001, 12:23 PM Beating 2 or 3 newbies isn't very hard if you are a average player.
Markusf is the best player i know(who never cheated as far as i know). I think you can beat 2 or 3 average in a single game.[/B]
Whats the point of cheating? Unless someone got a bunch of tribes or your start sucks you should be able to stay with the leader every game. I run my autologger program that saves every single turn of the game, and after the game i move all the saved files to my website. Which reminds me i should finish off the program and put it up for downloading.
markusf Mar 19, 2001, 12:33 PM my game yesterday with, jedi, jes, and smartfart i beat them all pretty easy. I had 30 cities at 300 bc, mikes, HG and collosus. king 1x 1x. I'd say i could take out 5 or 6 players with a decent start, that is as long as they aren't allied, if they are allied and sharing tech, it doesn't matter how good you are. You just can't match 4 or 5 peoples tech rates + expansion. Not to mention combined attacks.
Dogberry_Old Mar 19, 2001, 01:30 PM Ok... we have Cimfindriel, Hell-Raiser & myself for the average players & I am sure I can get a gamer or two from my regular groups to fill in from time-to-time. Still need an expert !!
Kaak & Johann511, you both seemed to express an interest in this. Are either of you available ?
After the first session, the game will have to revolve around my & the "Pros" schedules.I don't anticipate a problem though, as I almost always have somebody online that wants to play.

Mindfields Mar 20, 2001, 02:53 AM Markusf, maybe you could share this autolog program with us. It's usefull for everyone to prove someone is cheating or not.
markusf Mar 20, 2001, 11:29 PM ya I Will i just got to make some changes to it first. I just haven't found the time lately.. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif
HIEROPHANT Apr 05, 2001, 08:57 PM looks like eyesofnight does not stand a chance with they way settings should be. it seem you can only handle one on one games. i play with 7 civs always and much bigger map always ragings hordes. i bet you dont even have barbarians in your game. iF you played me in a real game and other people you would not stand a chance against me or other people.
kindred Apr 10, 2001, 11:07 PM Some of you guys sound good. Mind giving me a few pointers on how to beat anything. Even the AI's beat me
markusf Apr 11, 2001, 09:37 AM much bigger map always ragings hordes. i bet you dont even have barbarians in your game.
I have been posting way to much of my knowledge lately http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif
If you build your capitol inland(best is a river) and you have no ocean squares, you will most likely not see a barb the whole game on raging hordes. If someone insists on raging hordes, i will go along with it, after all its to my advantage.
gar13 Apr 12, 2001, 05:21 PM i'll be one of the newbies http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif
and Eyes, i'd love to play a duel against you sometime. 1x1x, king, and i don't care about size or barbarians.
you will most certainly win, but i'd enjoy the challenge
