SGOTM5 - Russia. Announcement and Sign Up Thread.

Hi everyone, and welcome to the SGOTM5 Sign UP thread. This game sees our intrepid settler party in a spot of bother! :) This is a new map and has not been played before. The game is available in CivIII 1.29f and PTW 1.27f formats and Mac players are welcome to play. A Conquests version of this game WILL NOT be provided.

Because this game is based on the GOTM23 rule set, it will be necessary for 1.29f players to install the GOTM mod up to GOTM25. Both"vanilla" and PTW players will need to install new resources graphics and a new pediaicons.txt file. Complete instructions on how to do this are provided in the second post of this thread.
Note: EVERYONE will have to install the correct resource graphics whether or not they have played SGOTM4.

The game will start on the 20th November, so sign up (either individually or as a team) by posting in this thread. Please note that self-constructed teams are restricted to a maximum of four members to which I may add one or two players for balancing purposes. If a team of 5 or more who have previously played together wish to continue, then that is fine.

Map Parameters
Playable Civ - Russia
World size - Large, 75% land give or take.
Difficulty Regent - but plays harder.
The map is handbuilt, and therefore may not have a standard configuration.

This Months' sponsored variant is OBCC - One Built City Conquest the rules for which are as follows.

1. You may never build a settler.
2. You must win by conquest victory condition.

1. The software version you would like to play.
2. Whether you would like to play the sponsored variant or not.
3. The level of game that you feel comfortable playing (Monarch, Deity etc.).

Please note: This game represents part of a transition to a standardised mod for SGOTM. As a result there have been some changes to the base game rules for this event. Discussion of these changes will be possible in the SGOTM5 Russia Maintenance Thread.

The team members are "comfortable" at playing between monarch and deity, I suppose.

Interesting! Why's he pointed us at GOTM 23? :hmm: That was pangeia, and I don't recall any of the terrain looking like this. It looks like we'll be nomads for a few turns as the first city site is so critical.

Just for clarification: The Mod is based on GOTM23. It uses the same rules in the bic/bix, except for a few things I have changed and will explain later. The map is entirely different.

I would like a run at a third SGOTM.

This looks very interesting. Sign me up please. If Bugsy's Bunnies are continuing I'd enjoy playing with them again. I'm an Emperor level player, who's more a builder than a warmonger. No preference on the variant.

Congrats Offa! I'll give you the same piece of advice given to me when my daughter was born. Use the time that your up late nights rocking her to sleep with your foot while playing Civ. (Actually this does work, I've tried it)

Questions: Can we capture new City and Abandon Moscow?
How winner will be determined?

A small inquiry to the variant rules.
If we get a settler from a goody hut are we alowed to keep it?
Use it to build a city?
Merge it to a existing town?
Or does it have to be disbanded?
Or perhaps we don't have goody huts?

The variant rules are:

1. You may never build a settler.
2. You must win by Conquest.

If you get a settler from a hut you can do as you please with him.
You can Free Palace jump, abandon cities, build a new palace as you see fit.

The Golden Laurel will be awarded to the members of the team that abide by the variant rules and win the game in the fewest possible turns. In the event that all variant teams lose, it will be awarded to the members of the team that survives the most turns.

The Green Laurel will be awarded to the team that that completes the game with the highest Jason score, regardless of whether they follow the variant or not.

Second question: Is map pangeya or what? We may stuck if we are at another continent (Island) and build Moscow not at the coast. BTW, are we Russian? (Expansionist, Scientific?) What else moded (other, than map?)

Yes you can capture cities, and get settlers from huts, you just can't build them yourself. I don't know what the map is, but you'll be able to get that coastal city from the AI.

The reason, that I did not played variants in SGOTM 2,3 was unclear rurles. Ideally rules should assume all possible situation. Since Civ is a game (only), I agree that some uncertancy may occur. However, I'd like to know is it "safe" to settel NOT at the coast, and what else is moded? For examle, I thought that we are Indian at SGOTM4, but things become very different. [Nonstandart ship movment, WM and contact trading, ets.] If somebody can make a list of this "small" features, at SGOTM5 I'll be gratefull.

Team Alamo, unfortunately being without their leader for this game, will have to change their name (Team Detlef seems an acceptable option).
Also, if Mauer decides to play this SG, he can be added to our roster to take alamo's place. We still would need a fifth.
