It is a well known fact (not really) that any anime fan under 18 with conservative parents goes through hell to watch anime. I went to this other site to find a huge treasure trove of true stories. :D

NOTE THAT THESE ARE NOT MY EXPERIENCES. ANY REFERENCES TO YAOI IS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE FANGIRLS THAT WATCH IT.

My friend and I were talking about yaoi and being fangirly, and then suddenly, the dreaded question from the driver's seat...

Mom: What's yaoi?

Me: It's a...fruit drink.

Mom: And where can I buy this 'yaoi?'

Me:....where you buy lemons.

*For those that don't know, yaoi is gay porn.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On my first day of school, my media teacher told everyone that had a TV to raise their hand.

*Everyone raises their hand*

Teacher: Every one has a VCR raises their hand.

*Everyone raises their hand*

Teacher: Everyone who has a computer...

*Everyone raises their hand*

Teacher: Everyone who goes to anime conventions...

*I raise my hand*

Teacher: Anime sucks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me and the brother were watching DBZ once, this was a while ago, and this guy that lived at our house named Ty walked in and yeah... This is what happened.

#16: I will only fight Goku.
Ty: Did he just say 'I will only fight cold goo?!'
Us: No...
Ty: *looks at #17* And who's this? A Cher impersonator or something? Is he gay?
*Sees Piccolo*
Ty: What's his name? Pickle? What the crap?
*Someone turns Super Saiyan*
Ty: What the hell? What's all that shiney stuff around them? And why is their hair all blond?
*after watching at least half the episode*
Ty: Okay, first of all we got this robot guy saying he wants to fight cold goo, and he hangs around a Cher impersonator and some chick. Then it has some guy named Pickle Boy and he has like things on his head, and then they all go shiney and glowy. This is a f***ed up cartoon. *leaves*

(Me watching CardCaptorSakura) Episode: illusion card

Sis: *Comes in* What's that? A girl with gigantic eyes holding a stick made of plastic?
Me: Whatever...
Sis: *shouts* BOOOORRIING
Me: "..."

(Sakura falls off from top of the wall)

Sis: WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HER...

(Commercial)

Sis: *Stops shouting at me*
Me: It's okay... She's the lead character! She's not gonna die...
Sis: For a second I thought she was gonna fly with that stick
Me:

(Commercial Ends)

Sis: *finds that her mom is dead* *cries* See, were lucky our parents still havent left us... blahblah..... *Talks like my Grandma*

Me: WTF is she talking about...

[I never watch anime with her. I learned to watch anime out of her reach]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Watching a New dbz episode*
Mom: We've seen this one.. :coffee:
Me: No we havent,
Mom: Yes we have
Me: Fine, What happens then
Mom: The guy with black hair hits the other guy the other guy screams and his hair goes yellow.
Me: :coffee:
*It happens*
Me: Coincedence,
Mom: Now turn over..
Me: No, I havent seen this :coffee:

Me: That's because it is.
Mom: That one messed up guy.
Me :coffee:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anime is okay, although I prefer Computer Animation much more than anything else. Examples of Computer Animation would be my Avatar, or if you've ever seen the movie Ice Age.

Most Anime TV shows just seem so fake it's annoying. Everyone seems to have a strange color of hair, and it's just annoying.

I've never really been into this anime/manga business. That's probably why half of the jokes(?) didn't make sense to me. At least the topic wasn't the usual flash thread.

Anime is ok if it's a Movie, but if it's a TV show (DBZ etc.) it will melt you brains off if you keep on watching them. Myself i only watch anime movies and nothing else of the sort. Period.

Most anime, Cardcaptors, Yu-Gi-Oh! etc. is aimed for 5 year olds and thus is crap. The rest is probably OK. But the crap is all that's shown over here.

Most anime, Cardcaptors, Yu-Gi-Oh! etc. is aimed for 5 year olds and thus is crap. The rest is probably OK. But the crap is all that's shown over here. The only reason you think Cardcaptors sucks is because they dubbed it so much. Here is an essay I wrote on how badly they dubbed it:
Language differences have been one of the most difficult barriers to overcome in the process of understanding other cultures. When a text is translated from one language to another, there is always some meaning lost, whether it is a pun, or a word that can have a more specific meaning than can be found in the language that is being translated to. However, usually, the translator tries to maintain the original meaning of the text or script in the translation, but in dubs of anime shows, Anglo centric companies have mutilated the show so much as to completely change the plot.

One of the ways that anime translators rewrite the script to look more Anglo-Saxon is by removing all traces of homosexuality. For example, in the show Cardcaptor Sakura, dubbed into Cardcaptors, the relationships between couples like Yukito and Touya, as well as the relationship between Tomoyo and Sakura, which can be interpreted as a dedicated friendship (They are only 9-10 years old), were lost. Instead, all scenes with Touya and Yukito together doing things like homework were cut. All the scenes with Tomoyo talking about how lucky she was to be able to film Sakura, or about how cute Sakura was, were cut. There is no doubt that such cuts were to “protect” America from the “evils” of homosexuality. While the main plot works just fine without these relationships, what makes Cardcaptor Sakura so great is that there are countless minor plots and fluff sections based solely on relationships like these. In a recent Cardcaptor Sakura survey, the favorite character of the fans was Tomoyo, the main reason being the way she acts around Sakura. The omission of her relationship decreased the popularity of Cardcaptors a lot.

On the topic of Tomoyo, her name was changed in Cardcaptors from the original Daidouji Tomoyo (Japanese names put the family name first) to Madison Taylor. The renaming of many characters concerned many fans, so the dubbing company, Nelvana, dedicated a section of their Cardcaptors FAQ to respond to this controversy.

Cardcaptors is directed at an English-speaking audience. Many fans are children. Some of the original character names are difficult for English-speaking children to pronounce. The new character names are as similar to the original as possible while at the same time allowing children to identify with the characters and ensuring the names are memorable and simple. (From the Cardcaptors FAQ)

This explanation, however, does not explain how a name like Madison is more memorable than something simple like Tomoyo. Certainly a name with only one kind of vowel sound in it is easier to pronounce than “Madison”? In fact, only one character in Cardcaptors retained her original name, Sakura. Unfortunately, looking at how the voice actors/actresses pronounce the name “Sakura” like “sa-KOO-rah”, it becomes more apparent why Nelvana came to the conclusion that the average American child could not pronounce it. The explanation also does not explain names like Aiden for Fujitaka. According to the FAQ, the intention was to keep the new names as similar to the original. There is absolutely no way that Aiden was the most similar name that Nelvana could come up with. Although the intent was to keep the sense of the original name, the only effect the name changes had was a bunch of angry fans of Cardcaptor Sakura.

Not only did Nelvana, and other dubbing companies try to disguise the original content of the shows, they decided to add their own subliminal social messages into the shows. In the anime show Sailor Moon, two characters, Haruka and Michiru, especially Haruka, who is a racecar driver, are girls that excel in areas that are mostly male-dominated. It is unbelievable that the dubbing companies seemingly intentionally cut every single scene of Haruka or Michiru doing anything accomplished. Instead, they become “normal” teenagers, with Michiru being a slut and Haruka being a loner. This also occurs in the aforementioned Cardcaptor Sakura, where everyone’s favourite character, Tomoyo, loses all her creativity. In the original Cardcaptor Sakura, she spends most of her free time making battle costumes for Sakura, but in Cardcaptors, she comes up with various sources from which she got the design, like in a fashion magazine. This only happens in America and third world countries where only men were created equal.

Although language and cultural differences make inter-cultural media difficult to preserve, there is no excuse for what Nelvana and similar companies did to Japanese anime shows. America is supposed to be the giant melting pot. However, now, the majority of Americans reject other cultures when they are subjected to them, so most Americans will never know about foreign cultures that America supposedly embraces.I wandered a bit off-topic though. :(

Well, one of the reasons why i like Anime movies instead of TV shows is just because they where cut and dubbed. (English dub in some cases is not so bad, but they allways mangle the story in the process  ) The most traumatising experiance for me with crappy dubbing is Sailor Moon with a Swedish dub. (Finnish and Estonian dub is VERY bad also) Can't the production companys see that they are destroying the most important thing while they are cutting the Anime shows, The STORY! Though they also cut Anime movies too, but i have managed to avoid them for the most part.

The film, Nausicaa was cut and dubbed from the Japanese original in 1985, and released titled "Warriors of the Wind" they managed to destroy the storyline by cutting only 20 min from the original, (The movie is 2 hours long) and the Box cover they put it up with is a mix of other popular movies of the time, see if you know from wich movies they took the charecters.

Tomoyo
Nov 13, 2004, 02:54 PM
I've seen the original Nausicaa with Japanese sub-titles. :D

Reno, please tell me about Swedish dubs! I want to see if they are any bettter than than the American dubs I mentioned in my essay.

Oh, and if you would provide a bigger picture, I might be able to tell who they are. I know for a fact that that black guy with a light sword is not in Nausicaa.

Reno
Nov 13, 2004, 03:01 PM
I've seen it too. (Just bought the Chinese relese with Japanese dubs and English subtitles)

Now let's see, something about Swedish dub... Can't really tell anything except with my poor Swedish knowlege, that if you ever think about studying it don't not do it it's not worth it, I have only seen Sailor Moon with Swedish dub (Came from Finnish TV a while back) and comparing it with the original is impossible. (They chose the wrong voice actors and cut some key parts of the story)

Can't really provide with a better picture, but none of the charecters from that Box cover are in the actual movie. (Except Nausicaa in the upper Right-Corner) and That box cover has references to Star-Wars etc.

In case you didn't see my other post, the Chinese writing on the Chinese release actually says, "City in the Sky", not "Castle in the Sky".

They only cut out key parts of the story and chose wrong seiyuus? Wow, that's pretty good.

Oh yeah, in Scandinavia (yes, I am aware that Finland is technically not part of Scandinavia), you have more liberal standards on sexuality. :goodjob:

Anime shown states-side sucks because of what American companies choose to show us. Honestly, there's so much more mature and intelligent stuff in Japan.

This is like saying that comics suck because you have only seen what Marvel and DC sell. Get out there and do some research before coming to any conclusions.
