View Full Version : Medieval Conquests set

Hi all,

now that I have proved I can do a scenario (lol) with the Great Armada and since another small secret project (ancient) is going well I am polishing my Reconquista scenario (always heard of but never seen :p !).

Then since I had already started (some a long time ago) to prepare stuff for some other medieval scenarios I wondered whether there would an interest in a full Medieval European conquests set.

Advantage : only one big file to download but that could be used for many scenarios, first for this set but as well for other medieval Europe scenarios created by other people (so only biq files or just some improvements, resources to download so small anyway).
Whether other people would like to use the basic pack or not would be a plus but is not the main condition.

The issue is whether you would like a set of conquests going with 1 main art files (big because it covers different times and areas but much smaller than a set of Art files for each scenario as a lot of art would be used in different scenarios).

This is nevertheless a huge task and if I do that I would need serious help even if some stuff is already done.

I (hopefully we) would need some gfx creators, probably some special units so 1 good unit creator (units should blend in), one or two writers (I am NOT a native English speaker and I guess it shows in my civilopedia texts), through testers, etc...
And... well... I like team work !!!
Maps I can take care of normally (many are done or will be using Maptweaker and some corrections) and if you have played Great Armada or discussed with me you probaby already know I am an historian and quite thorough on historical and geographical accuracy. On the other hand I don't know everything and ideas, knowledge,... are welcome as well.

But if you are interested, it is for a serious commitment, not just to criticize something then leave, so most of the work would be done by e-mails.

Here is the list of scenarios I was thinking of, covering the most important (IMHO of course) events of Medieval Europe :

- The Barbaric Kingdoms : Franks, Wisigoths, Suevi, Ostrogoths, Burgonds, Vandals, etc... already settled and longing for hegemony
- The Danegeld : the British isles; the Anglo Saxon kingdoms and the others facing Danish and Norwegians raids but allowing also the possible conquest by Normans.
- The Reconquista (need I say more ?)
- The Crusades (a small Europe overseas)
- The Latin Empire (Byzantines, Bulgars, Serbians, Epire, Seldjuks, Venice and the Latin states).
- The 100 year's war (second part)
- The Baltic between Hansa, Sweden, Denmark, Teutonic Order and Poland-Lithuania
- "Condottiere" Communal Italy from 1450 onwards.

The maps would be precise, not the whole of Europe and loading times would be kept short.
All would include tech-trees, either short or long (Reconquista : 3 eras, Danegeld : 2 eras, 100 years' war : 1) and all would be full scenarios with pedia icons and texts.

All would include (if possible) a special MP version.

I prefer one scenario at the time, otherwise there's a definite risk of everything stalling because you're waiting for a unit for another scenario...

As soon as I am finished with RFRE, I would be glad coming in such initiative. It is a risky, yes, but very good idea. It is so stupid to have to download the same files over and over again. Plus, this could bring the establishement of a working group from the amazing civfanatic community to build mod efficiently and quickly. I am really impressed to see how much knowledge and skills exist here when it comes to make historical scenarios.

BTW, I would especially be interested to work on the 100 year's war, although I would love to see it in two parts. The first part would be with France limited to Paris and Ile de France (Domaine Royal), and many vassals which should be diplomaticaly or militarily controlled in order to resist England and push it back to the sea. Just some thoughts...

Hmm...A European scenario, starting around 955 AD (when King Otto of Germany sent the Magyars packing at Lechfeld, ending the invasions of Europe by Central Asian peoples, ending the Great Migrations and officially bringing the Dark Ages to a close) involving most of the nations in the current scenario would be interesting. An alternative history scenario, namely, one where the Romans won at Malazgirt (Manzikert) would also be interesting.

Well, thanks to the 2 that volunteered.

That's not really enough though, even though I can appreciate the work Pinktilapia has done.

We would really need 1 unit maker for instance and 1 gfx person.

Apparently voters liked the idea but actually few voted in the poll so I am not sure it is really worth it.

@ PresidentMarcos : actually I (or we) would focus on the scenarios listed above which I think is enough to have a set. But then it would include enough art so that other people can release their own scenarios using the set so you could do it. But incorporating another scenario in the set would require quite some time. Besides I am not keen on alternative history.

I think releasing the scenarios independently would be a better idea. A series rather than a set. They could still draw on the gfx of the predecessors, of course.

I might be of some help wrt historical info. I can play-test too, of course.

there's already many units for medieval conquests
so wouldn't it be better to just make a thread requesting the units we need?

Well, LouLong, since you're a fellow longtime visitor of these forums, how could I say no? Especially since you've added so much to the community already. To be honest, I don't have a lot of time right now, but I have a little, and I'm willing to make a couple units if they're really needed for the scenerios or the set. I don't know how long it will take me, but I'm willing to help you.

It's an interesting idea. It could fit my feudal Netherlands mod with my War of Cow scenario ( 1275-1278 ). :D

How could I help ?

These sound good ideas. I'd help but I'm way too busy!

My favourite of these is the first one, which sounds a lot of fun. I would say the second as well, but it would overlap a lot with the scenario I've just posted, as you can see from my sig (and also with King Arthur's Go Viking scenario, too). Which isn't to say you couldn't cover the period better than me, naturally!

Although, that said, I would be able to check civilopedia entries and so on if you'd like. I don't have time to read them but I am a proof-reader by background. Also, if you need to know anything about the ecclesiastical, theological, or philosophical history of these periods (in the perhaps not-very-likely chance that you don't want to focus on war and empire-building) I might be able to give some advice or ideas.

Great idea. I've done (and posted) a set of themed leaderheads for 5th century, some of which could be useful for early Medieval scenarios...some other era-specific leaderheads have suitable single-era pcxs in the pack with them....I could maybe make up a set of leaderheads useful for this idea in the future :) .

@ R8XFT, Plotinus, MaisseArsouye, Sa~Craig, utahjazz7 :

guess you guys posted when I was away. I thought there was nor real interest in the project and Utahjazz remark made me notice there had been more posts.
That's great !
And with people as talented as you, I am sure something could be done.
I will think about a way it could be organized and let you know ASAP so that we can discuss it, start working.

@MaisseArsouye : other scenarios would be nice. The more the better. More choice and variety for the players for a probably not much bigger pack.
