What kind of game for GOTM XI are you going to propose ?
Indeed, if you plan to submit a large map for the GOTM 2 for civ III, it will be hard to play as well the GOTM XI for civ II if the map is large too . (because of the time!)

How about a hand made large map with 7 identical, small, more or less equally spaced islands on a high level?
Once you have explored your island, you'll know what everybody else has. People will need to experiment with a naval tech branch first. I know I don't usually follow this path.
If the islands are small ie. about 10 or 12 squares, nobody will need to make 300 engineers and spend ages farming.

A hand made large map is good but are you sure you want a LARGE MAP!
If the LARGE map is done with GOTM CIV III , I think a lot of people will not play the both GOTM. I'm not including myself in those peole because I will the both GOTM even it's in a huge map but we have to think about the most of.
I like your idea about 7 islands around the same size where the naval forces will be decisive because I do not play this way... It's a very good idea but the LARGE map , i'm not sure!

I don't think one GotM should suffer due to another.
Any size is fine with me(especially with new score system)but maybe medium should be as large as we go?...I thought there had been consensus on this!?

I know that I have always wanted a small map just because that gives me a chance to actually complete it. I'm not even looking at playing the Civ 3 GOTM right now.
I was hoping the idea of a medium map with less land would work, but the last two games that were shown as 'archapelago' had basically one huge continent.

The only problem caused by a large map is the land area, where people make lots of cities and turns can take up to an hour each.
This will not be a problem with 95% water, so the game will be quick to play, even with an 80 x 125 map.
Some people may even go OCC with it.
Maybe we could consider it for GOTM12?
