AlanH Jan 29, 2005, 04:16 PM I got Sanitation cheap from JPN, we still have to build hospitals to use it. Sure, it wasn't a swipe at you. Bulding hospitals is just one of the options I wanted to leave open for you by not re-engaging mobilization.
I'll play it by ear on the switch to COMM. What I envision is being able to setup a semi productive core on the western end of the southern continent prior to getting tanks so that we don't have as far to transport them.That would be very helpful in view of the losses we could incur while shipping them from the north, as I found to my cost. I must have lost half a dozen galleons as well as the three shiploads of units, which is why there are a couple of ironclads in build now.

leif erikson Jan 29, 2005, 05:30 PM Sorry, I am late to this discussion. I have used Communism before and it averages the corruption amongst all your cities. While it will increase production in the south, it will pretty much cripple the northern production center. At this point, I see no reason not to try it and get a feel for its effects as we aren't going to grab any medals this time around. :cry:
BTW - Secret Police HQ is a C3C addidtion, iirc.
There are two directions of travel, to the western archipelago, where civs go to die, and east along the southern continent to England, then north through Japan towards France.
In case I wasn't very clear, I'm all for taking out the production centers of as many civs as we can in the south while Cossacks are still effective. Let all our civ buddies fight and die over in the west, there is nothing there but deserts and mountains. The most they can do is throw rocks at each other. :lol: :lol: While we relegate them to their new environments, we have time to come up with MT and AW. I think Alan's schedule is very good. As the deals expire, we send them packing to the west, only it isn't the land of milk and honey. Actually, we could probably keep some Cossacks over there to deal with the Rifles they may be able to build there as they shouldn't have many resources, if any.

Unfortunately it is not a good test for a COTM as we may not see that many burgers in the whole world much less have it available to one city if placed right.

As indicated in the sign-up thread, I am comfortable on emporer level, but my experience with CivIII is limited almost excusively to a few GOTMs (so I still do things like not realize that navigation allows safe ocean travel). Absolutely no offense, of course, if you have other plans in mind, or if you end up with no space.

Let's try to keep this list updated in the handoff report (mainly the trades and MA's)
Our military is strong to everyone except the French. Ideally we should not attack IRQ or JPN as they are the closest to FRA and would be good to MA with but I'm not sure how much help they will be. We may be battling the French at the end of the game as the last 2 superpowers in the game. Goal is definately getting to tanks and alot of artillery. Maybe even a nice ROP of France if we can get positioned properly to create a single front with them, but that is a ways off.
I think we should finish off the western landmass and then proceed from west to east on the crescent, stopping prior to JPN and enlisting the last two to help go after France.
Based on all that I make the following deals
VIK - peace for the 3 cities, Wmap and 14 gold
JPN - give SM and CORP for SANT, ESP and Wmap - we need them to be stronger to help go after the French
Save game and post question to our thread about COMM
Decide to play some turns since I need to wait for the resistance to end in a few cities

Notes to next player
1) I was thinking of attacking AMR, but they have a MPP with IND & ENG who could affect our shipping - also do we want any other cities close to our capital? I think we are benefiting from the palace rank bug because the western end of the southern continent is already productive
2) Because of the productive status in the south I have not changed governments and I'm not sure that we should at this point
3) I had our ship chaining route setup - load inside Santiago make 2 at sea swaps and land in Nidaros - I've also been trying to RR a path to the frontline from Nidaros (it's mostly done except for the new cities I keep taking) - but now that we can upgrade to transports you'll need to place the ships again - I moved 4 into Santiago for upgrade and rushed the harbor there
4) I'm building the Intelligence Agency so we can try our hand at stealing techs from FRA
5) I blocked off the coal area near Buffalo with troops to keep the ZUL ship from offloading a settler
6) You may not need to wait for artillery to finish off the ZUL - use 1 cossack and light up the city to see what is in defense before moving in the stack
7) pollution popped up this turn near Moscow the worker have 1 turn left on the RR so I left the pollution till next turn

Clean up the rest of the units and get another leader. I make an army with him. I call him Revenge of the Mongoloid. Kill one more unit and take the city.
I try to carefully steal a tech from the French and we succeed. I cost aprox 2400 gold. I choose Flight as our steal as it seems like that one is most expensive.
I then buy Mass production from Joan for 12gpt - WM - Gems - Another Lux and 300 gold.

Attack on The Capital of the Mongols Kara...something. Bombard the heck out of it bringing it down to size 10. Attacked 2 4hp infantry with our Armiws and lost both :( loose one more unit so I decide to wait a turn and try to bombard again.

I'll stop here as the majority of the Mongol hordes are gone. Notes. We should have enough cash next turn to steal MT. Then we have to figure out how to get oil and start pumping out those tanks. I think I have the ship chain thing right from the northern isle to the southern one. America would give us 80 gold and 12 gpt for MP. This would actually give you the cash to do the steal this turn if you've got the guts. I really worry about the dang French catching us and declaring war on us too early.

Actually there is over 12 hours between my posted "got it" and when I was able to turn in the report. That turn set was played between getting about 1/3 of the 'honeydo" list completed and going bowling with my son.
The Zulu capital was on the mainland and they had 2 towns left one on the island and one on the mainland. The one on the mainland had hit size 7 whilst the one on the island was 6 so I figured I was safe attacking. They must have had more units in their island home than on the mainland because thats where the capital went :(

leif erikson Jan 31, 2005, 07:02 AM I've been looking at the save. We have an interesting problem. As stated earlier, the only civs with oil are France and Iroquois. They both want about 310 GPT for oil, plus all the gold in the treasury.
France wants 110 GPT and all the gold in the treasury for MT (interesting that all the most desired techs for warmongers both have initials MT). I have a feeling that if we buy MT, we will not be able to get oil as the value drops when more than 1 civ owns a tech.
The options I have come up with are:
1. Research MT, it requires 7 turns at 100%, losing 31 GPT. Once we have MT, trade it along with whatever GPT the Iroq. want and get tank production under way.
2. Buy MT from France and see if we can sell it to the Iroquois for oil.
3. Put together an attack forces and head fro the extreme northern end of the southern continent and try to take and hold Snagha and Bengal, which are rich with oil.
I think the safest option is number 1, but we lose time (which at this point is probably no big deal). Numbers 2 and 3, imho, are very risky. It would really stink to have MT and no oil, and no way to get oil for 20 turns. Attacking the northern area would give us oil, if there we can hold it with Cossacks and Infantry. ;)

The Iroquois have a coal for wines deal with us that will last another 19 turns. :eek: However, in 7 turns a deal will expire with them in which we gave them saltpeter. If we self-research MT, completed in 7 turns, that will compliment nicely the expiration of the saltpeter deal. I hope that the Iroquois would give us a discount in an oil for saltpeter deal.
Looks pretty straight forward to me, now? ;)

If I tried to renegotiate it he wanted all of our treasury to keep it going. Seeing that we had no use for it at the time I declined. When the trade for Electronics came available I jumped on it. This in hindsight may have been a mistake.
@ leif. Do not even try to take Englidh cities unless you have pounded them for a turn or 2 with the Arti. If they have anywhere near the units that the mongols had this will be a pretty slow attack.

Thanks. Wouldn't think of going anywhere without artillery against Infantry. Hate to slow the momentum, but reality may force me into it. Between getting MT, oil and building an army of tanks, I think we have a little time. After all, 2050 is getting closer, isn't it!! :eek: :cry:

DJMGator13 Jan 31, 2005, 07:36 PM Not sure what the builds are but if we are close to tanks it might be worth changing all cossack build to artillery. We need a real large stack of artillery to be able to redline all infantry in a city in one turn because they will heal if it takes more than one.
But if we can't trade for any oil should we build some marines (if they are modded to 12 attack)? With the speed of artillery marines would be OK.
leif erikson Jan 31, 2005, 11:08 PM A quick update. I'm on my 8th turn. We have Motorized Transport and we have oil. We paid dearly for the oil, Ivory, Saltpeter, WM, 2307 Gold and 285 GPT. :eek:
We are at war with England, London has been obliterated (sorry Alan :p ), and we got sneak attacked by the Aztecs. They took a couple of cities, but it won't last, except way over on the extreme west where it'll take a while to get there.
We have 13 cities building tanks. The question is whether to mobilize the economy. Of the 13, all but 3 will shave at least a turn, and some of them 2, from mobilization. I'm tempted to do it but thought I should ask to see if there is a good reason not to? Especially since it is late and my eyelids are hanging! :lol: :lol: I havbe to go through the cities in the morning and make sure we're getting the most we can from each.

The Iroquois discovered MT a turn before we did, so they can now build tanks tro fight France as well, I hope.

France will complete the U.N. in 16 turns in Lyon. :eek: A screenie will be attached of the city view of Lyon and was taken one turn ago. England is about half finished, but the forces there should be able to complete the job. We have Tanks and the northern continent is pumping them out at one per 2 to 4 turns per city producing them, in most cases. Our economy is mobilized for war, so we are getting some extra shields for military builds.
Mistfit's plan, imho, is a good starting point for invading France and targeting Lyon to interrupt the U.N. build. We have 16 turns to implement it. I did NOT move any of the new units on the northern continent nor the transports because I wasn't sure what the team would want to do next. I would recommend we consider building an Army of Tanks and Artillery on the northern continent for shipment to the Lyon area.

France will complete United Nations in 16 turns. England will sue for peace but won’t give enough for it, imho. We should have enough force in England to finish them off. The units in the northern continent have not been moved, nor have the transports. I think we need to start moving resources towards the eastern end of the northern continent for an assualt on France, particularly on Lyons and the U.N. I am stopping now to allow for discussion and to give the next player time to work through that strategy and decision.
The Zulu will take peace for their remaining non-capital city plus a little gold, etc.
The Mongols will take peace for 1 of their cities.

4.) I think we should be dastardly and pilliage every tile around Paris to ruin their rep and ability to make deals with our armies at the beginning of the war. This will also keep them from being able to make deals during the war.

iirc, the interturn on which the U.N. is built will have the first vote. If we wait until it is built, then we have to survive the vote. I don't think we will as nearly everyone is furious with us. Hitting it the turn before would be nice! :mischief: I also didn't plant any spies as th erisk of a premature war was not worth it. Perhaps we should give it a try a few turns before the U.N. completes.
Pillaging of the type your advocating, I think, would require ROP Rape. I'm certainly not against this, but getting an ROP may be the hardest part of the strategy. ;)
imho, we need an ROP with the Iroquois and start building forces in his little enclave near Paris and Lyon. If we can get, make that afford, an ROP with France, so much the better. Also, we have oil for 14 more turns and really need it a lot longer. :rolleyes:

I haven't looked at the save yet, but one option seems to be to attack the French and capture a source of oil from them on or before turn 14. I'll have a look around tonight and see what I can come up with.

We can buy Radio from France for 858gold and 106gpt. Then we have to hope that we get a tech that JPN & IRQ do not have as our free tech. Then sign MPP with everyone we can except FRA and then we declare on FRA and draw everyone else in. We need a tech to offer to get the MPP, currently IRQ and JPN won't sign. We could also eliminate AMR, VIK and MON as quick as possible to get rid of 3 FRA votes, but if we can get a MPP with them and draw them in then they will abstain in a vote.
That's about the only thing I can think of other than an all out assualt on the FRA city once it builds the UN and raze it like Mistfit suggested.

DJMGator13 Feb 02, 2005, 07:48 PM Neither FRA, IRQ or JPN are scientific so there is a good chance we would be able to trade with JPN and IRQ for the MPP by giving up the tech. We would need to sign as many MPPs as possible because we have no choice but to attack FRA. If FRA does not have the tech we get then we could use it to get an ROP with FRA as well and be in a position to attack the UN build city and pillage their capital on the opening turn of the war and the IBT should bring on the dogpile when FRA attacks our pillaging units.
You might as well try to play out the 15-16 turns to the UN when you play. There's no rush if you want to wait for other comments. If we fail we'll lose the UN vote. I looked at the cities that France own and I think they have only been at war with ARB which they eliminated, except for any of the phony wars we were able to sign earlier in the game.
EDIT: Based on Mistfit's map in post 188 it looks like France has indeed only been at war with ARB - and -

To get an ROP with France would be even better, if that's possible. Then Mistfit's idea of some Explorers, at 20 shields each, to tear up Paris, while sending the Tanks and Artillery for Lyons might just get us started. I'm not sure how long we'll last, but it is a lot better to go down fighting than to lose to a U.N. vote. :p
The other thought I had was that we could get France to start the war with us. Simply try to plant a spy and if we fail, Joannie Baby will declare on us. At least civs always do when I have played that far into a game. If we succeed in planting the spy, we can see what the cost would be to mess with the U.N. build. My guess, with that many shields invested, is that the cost will be astronomical!! :eek: But it s worth a try.

1. France wants 154 gpt.
2. Iroquois wants 95 gpt + gems + dyes
3. We have a deal giving France gems + dyes + 12 gpt for two more turns.
It seems to me we should wait 2 more turns then do the trade. France will value gems and dyes higher than the Iroquois do because they are bigger, so I think we should get he best gpt from them when we renew that deal. The only hazard in waiting is that someone else may get Rocketry and reduce its value.

I would say you hit the nail on the head!! I think Alan is trying to preserve as much GPT as he can for the purpose of rushing units to invade France with. Whatever option provides the least GPT payout is probably the best. imho, we will not be in a position to invade for 12 to 15 turns and have to pay the GPT deal for at least that long.
The only other consideration is if the GPT deal with the Iroquois will somehow provide for better relations and make the MPP and ROP deals easier to obtain. I think Gator may be right about making peace before they will accept an MPP. The English will talk, but their cities will flip back to them. If we make peace, we should consider abandoning them. The Aztecs, iirc, are not ready to talk yet, so 2 turns may improve that, along with taking a couple of their western towns. There should be a couple of Cossacks over there facing Spears, iirc.
@Alan - 95 GPT for 20 turns is less than 154 GPT for 14 turns, so you could take the Iroquois deal if you think they will have Rocketry. However, there is no knowing whether the Iroquois have Rocketry right now. 2 turns is a reasonable delay, imho, to try and get a better deal. However, you can usually bet that I'll be wrong about such things. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Amphibious War popped up in the last turn or so. I don't think that the Iroq or Japan have techs in the MA, but I don't know this for sure. I just checked thr 1770 save with CRpMapStat and Amphibious War is not listed as available. In the 1772 save, Amphibious War is listed under France, Iroq. and Japan. I don't know who discovered it, but I am quite sure it wasn't France as they already had Computers (Mech Inf) and Fission (UN and Manhattan Proj).

I've been contemplating how to buy Radio from the lowest bidder, as we are going up against MI with Tanks and that can be costly (16 attack vs 18 defence, no retreat), so we need as much cash as possible.

Instead of abandoning some of our high flip cities could/should we gift them to FRA to create some nuisance issues and allow some of our partners in the war a free FRA city to attack, which would guarantee FRA would not win a UN vote if we aren't sucessful in a direct attack.

I wanted to let you know we also have several good teams (and then ours :lol: ) playing the Gator01 SG which grew out of Scout's Jumpmaster game where we combined strong players with those wanting to learn more. Even as a stronger player I have still learned alot by playing in these SG and hope to learn more by playing with Gyathaar in SGOTM06. Getting on a team that asks questions and fosters discussion is a great way to learn. My game has improved vastly since I started to play SG's and SGOTM. Good luck and I hope you find a good team to land on for SGOTM06.

AlanH Feb 04, 2005, 10:04 PM I've only reached 1778 AD - 3 more turns. We bought Radio and are in the Modern era. We have Rocketry, so does France. No one else has any modern techs. I've kicked England off the mainland and beaten up the Aztecs and Zulus a bit more. I have 19 tanks assembled in the north east ready to embark for France. We have a lot of artillery, but most of it is in the south.
I can either make peace with everyone, and buy MPPs with as many as possible now, or leave it for a few more turns. The later I leave it the more tanks and stuff we can build under mobilisation, but there's a risk that someone else will research rocketry and our bargaining power will disappear. I think i'll go for peace and MPPs now, but I'm going to sleep on it.
Turn 361 1772 AD Preflight
After discussions we agree to try to buy Radio to get to the Modern Era, then we'll have our free tech as a possible bargaining chip to get MPPs with everyone before attacking France.
Objectives:
1. Buy Radio. We should get Rocketry free.
See who has what techs. If rocketry is sellable then make peace with all opponenents so that we can strike MPP deals ... we hope! Note that when we make peace we lose mobilisation. Try to get RoP with France
2. Build and rush artillery, tanks, explorers, transports in the north west and ship to Kawauka under Iroquois RoP.
3. Take out Lyons before Turn 376 - UN ETA. Note that Lyons is already at max production with 20 working citizens, so this ETA should be OK unless they mine some irrigated plains.

We are currently building at a good rate, and I think I'm going to stay at war with the Aztecs for a couple more turns, to keep mobilised, and to pummel the Aztecs some more to reduce flip chances, and maybe create some cities I can gift to France to set them up as victims when our MPPs (I hope!) cut in.
Note that America has an MPP with France. If we attack France America will declare on us. Probably not a problem as they only have two cities, both within reach of our Moscow troops.
Apologies for the slow progress., but my brain hurts :eek:. My big headaches are:
- Fire power. We'll need more tank production in the north. Hence my feeling I need to stay mobilised.
- Logistics. We need to get as much as possible of the fire power in the south up to the French strike position, particularly our 40+ artillery. That's going to need half a dozen more transports in the south.
- The distance to Lyons from the Iroquois border. The nearest tiles we can currently reach are two tiles from Lyons, and we'd be attacking across a river. Unless we can redline them with artillery we have well under 50% probability of a kill. An artillery stack will take two turns to get within range. I'm assuming we can't sneak attack to gain a freee turn in enemy territory. If we move troops towards Lyons before we declare then I'm sure France will tell us to leave or declare, and we'll auto-eject or get hammered.
Below is a possible plan that gets our troops close enough to Lyons on the first turn of war so that that artillery can hit it (but still across the river), and tanks can attack it on the second turn without crossing a river. I've shown a possible explorer pillage operation to reduce France's ability to hit us in the first inter-turn, but unless I produce and transport a huge number of explorers it will be difficult to cut enough links north and south to be effective. We can put our tank army on top of the stack, but France will no doubt bomb it until it feels safe to attack it.
Any other suggestions or recommendations?

The only other thought I had was if we could "cut" a line through Azteca to allow us to use rails through Japanese and Iroquois lands to get our artillery up to France, we wouldn't need transports and the time to use them. This would require that we can sign an ROP with the Iroq and Japan. We might even get one with Azteca in a peace deal?? With an ROP with France, we could get the artillery where we want them to be most effective.
I've only got the 1772 save to look at, so I don't know what deals are available to you.

We should keep Brest only long enough to land troops and we should raze all other FRA cities, except for one with oil and a harbor/airport. The flip chance will be too large. We should also try to keep all our forces together on one tile. This will force FRA to either attack our SOD or go thru IRQ and JPN to get to our cities. We need to be able to last thru several turns of intense counter attacks and hope we get some support from the IRQ and JPN. Do we have some troops positioned to claim the FRA & AMR cities near Moscow?

AlanH Feb 05, 2005, 09:02 AM - Azteca is not in our way. Keltoi, Japan, Iroquois and France have the land between us and Lyons, and we have RoPs with all but Japan ... and France. See map attached. A French RoP rape would certainly solve a lot of problems, but it's going to be difficult to get a RoP.
- We can't remobilize unless we are at war with someone. Good point though. We'd have to make peace, set up the MPPs with Iroquois and Japan, RoPs with Japan and France if poossible, then declare war on someone. India is probably favorite. We wouldn't actually have to fight them unless they started it. China and the Vikings are other options, but China has a MPP with Iroquois.
- I agree we raze French cities as we dispense with their services, but my focus is totally on Brest and Lyons. Oil is a long way away from there, and if I get to Lyons with any army left I'll hand off to you to solve that problem :D
- Troop positioning on our home island is the least of my worries. We are building and keeping tanks in Moscow, and maintaining mobilization will help to continue that process.
[EDIT] Opps! Forgot the map. It's a bit small, but there are rails almost all the way, just a tile near our border with Japan needs rails added.

I'm out of practice at mobilization as (a) I seldom get to this stage in the game and (b) it's turned off in GOTMs. I thought you had to be at war.

I do have one other distraction, though. I need to do some mods on the SGOTM system to support C3C. Nothing major, but it all takes time - mostly making sure I don't break anything else in the process :rolleyes:

I guess we might be hit by marines. Other than that the only land route to us for France is through America's territory, and our cultural range will mean they have to stop within range of a tank before they reach us.

I'm still playing this, veeerry carefully :eek:. Status update:
We are in the final preparations for our hit on Lyons. I have 36 tanks loaded into transports ready to cross to France under RoP, and another 15 in the south. There are 45 artillery available. We are at peace with everyone, and we have MPPs with Iroquois and Japan. So far so good.
The complication is that France has MPPs with Keltoi and America. Keltoi signed theirs in 1776 AD, so it will be in force when we attack Lyons. I therefore have to prepare for counters from Keltoi and America as well as from France. It occurs to me that I could trigger war with France, with our troops in place to attack Lyons, by declaring war on Keltoi with no troops on Keltoi soil, and then attacking them across their border France would then declare on us. I also propose to try to plant a spy during that turn, as we have to deal with the space ship as well. If that fails France will presumably declare? I have no experience of spy planting, hence the question mark.
If France declares on us as a result of our actions while we are on her territory, would this constitute a ROP rape by us? I'm not squeemish about RoP rape, it's just that if we can preserve our ability to do it later, why not? We still have a lot of conquering to do in this game after we've sorted Joan out and RoPs might come in handy.

EDIT - On ROP issue, I think it will still be an ROP abuse, although I don't know that for sure.
I took an old save, around 1770, and tried planting a spy. Got caught and France immediately declared war. If they don't and you want them to, just try to plant a second time and they usually will.

We've already had one flip to the Vikings in the middle of the southern continent since I made peace with everyone. I was in two minds whether to declare and recover the city, but I decided we need to focus on France, and instead I bought an embassy with Ragnar and sold him a RoP. So we can still reach all parts of the continent, and we'll rape him later.
BTW I got Amphibious Warfare in the wheeing and dealing, so we can build marines whenever we want them. There's oil next to Rheims, which is close to the main Iroquois border, see our explorer's holiday snaps above.

At 100 sheilds each (the cost of a Tank??) :eek: , we may have to set a city or two to Marines and rush them when a Transport is available and go after the islands. I'm not sure we can afford to interupt tank production until France is subdued. They'll be some time after that happens, unfortunately... :blush:

36 tanks loaded into 6 transports at Snagarst. We have 7 arty and 4 more tanks there now. We can move them to France in one turn, next turn they can deploy via the RoP and the transports can return. So in 3 turns we can have all troops landed and in position to attack. There are 38 more arty in the south, plus 15 tanks. 5 tanks are in Moscow.
The challenge is that when we attack Lyons the Keltoi will declare. We lose our RoP with them. We probably have to gift some English and Aztec cities to Iroquois/Japan to provide a buffer zone between our southern cities and the Keltoi, but we need some active defence against them.
A thought. If I declare on the Keltoi first, then attack them across the border to trigger the MPP with France, with my troops in place in France, does that count as RoP rape? leif thinks it still does.

Investigate Lyons for 331 gold. 5 MI in residence, UN in 5 turns. It's been delayed by the polluted tile I guess, and my explorer's been standing on it to save our place. Shame:p
There are 3 arty in Lyons as well, so we'll suffer some hits during our first attacks.
Attempting to size the attack requirement: Assume we deploy 50 arty, we'll maybe hit something with 20 of them. There's a chance we'll get the MI down to 2hp each. Attacking from the right side of the river we'll have better than 40% chance against them. So we should be able to take the city with 20 tanks. Do we set up a second attack force on Rheims? Better investigate Rheims as well, 196 gold. There are 5 MI there as well. We'd need to split arty and tanks into 2 stacks. The problem is the arty, we can't afford to skimp on pulverising Lyons defences. We could maybe divert a little to Rheims and hope to cut it to pop 12, but tanks will only have 16% chance against 4/4 MI in the city. Odds double if we can get them down to 3/4. We'd need maybe 10-15 arty at Rheims, and prayer. So we'll try that. The counter attack will kill us, of course.

Final planning:
When we take out Lyons and Rheims they'll still have 115 MI. They have 31 cities, with an average of 4 MI per city. Assume 50% have 5 MI each like the ones we've investigated. That accounts for 75. The rest may have 2 or 3 each, plus a few strays. They'll probaby use up to 50 of them to counter-attack leaving the rest to defend their cities. They'll build and draft some as well.
The play sequence is prolly the same as the F10 order and the diplo screen order. If so:
- We attack on our turn and are immediately at war with France, Keltoi and America.
We expect to attack Keltoi positions in the south and to capture our two French target cities. We then have to decide what to do with the cities, depending on our survival rate in the battles. Lyons will be razed. It has SunTzu, but we don't really need it. Our objective is to destroy the UN build. Rheims is worth keeping if possible, for its oil, but I can't see how to hold it. Our troops' survival there depends on staying in the mountains. They would be decimated in the city on the plains, and a flip is highly probable even if the French don't kill us.
- In the interturn Aztecs go first.
- America next, probably won't do anything.
- France next. They will attack us and that will bring Japan and Iroquois into the war against them. France may then choose to go for some easy targets in Iroquois, and the odd isolated Japanese town. There are a couple of cities defended by spears, and some with infantry are reachable. These are easier targets than our armies if they are healthy. Worst case, we'll be hit by up to 27 bombers/arty, then 50 MI. Our two armies can absorb a lot of the pressure, but it depends how effective the bombardment is. Our tanks will already be bruised by our attacks. If the armies and infantry can take out 10-15 MI then our tanks will lose about 40 hp to the rest. That's 10 healthy tanks or 20 damaged ones, so we may survive and hold onto our arty.
- Iroquois have MI, and hopefully they'll hurt some of the French strays.
- Japan may go after France, but I doubt it. Infantry and cavalry against MI?
- Keltoi will counter-attack us, and we'll suffer some losses in the south. Their first attack will cause Japan and Iroquois to declare on them, and maybe that will divert some of Keltoi's firepower onto Japan.
- India will declare on France, then on Keltoi, along with Japan and Iroquois, but I doubt they will be a factor.
- The rest will watch and wonder, and prolly just keep their heads down.
Other intelligence reports:
France has 4 spaceship parts in production, none complete.
Sabotage or a tech steal is not an option. We'd need much more cash.
France appears to have no airports! We won't be able to airlift reinforcements. Should we try to establish a beach head in Riyadh? It would take 3 more turns to get the currently available tanks there and ready to roll. We have 10 tanks now and 6 more next turn. We just have time before the UN build, but it may be dangerous to wait. Our oil deal with Iroquois runs out in 2 turns. I decide to go now.

Fortify and stop and think!
France still has 20hp in Rhiems. If we attack we are likely to promote each one twice. That means we actually have to take 30hp. That'll need 50 tanks. We have 28. There seems little point in proceeding now. So options are:
- Move the stack - can't without losing the arty
- Leave it where it is. Best option. Hopefully it will either be seen as too strong to attack with its cossack army and infantry defenders on the mountain.
Next question is what to do with Lyons. It has a 42% flip probability, so I guess we raze it. That'll kill France's barracks hopefully. We'll have to put our tanks back in the main stack, under the tank army and infantry, and leave one tank and the 3 captured arty to be recaptured. Should have moved them before firing :( Abandon Lyons and 25 taxmen bite the dust.
Move ironclad between Strasbourg and Denver on our home island. Both are defended by regular rifles. If that's representative of the defence on the island then maybe we should hit Cincinnati. Let's wait for the reaction from the AI.

It's a very complicated picture and rather a mess.
Home island: We need to reinforce Moscow's garrison. Barcelona is going to be hard work, I think, but once that falls we should be able toclear the French off our island.
Choose whether you want to keep the tundra towns. The AI is very aggressive about settling as soon as a space shows up.
France: We have three stacks ready to move at your command. The northern one near Riyadh has only one artillery. I recommend getting it some artillery cover. It has two explorers who took out France's rubber. The other two have artillery. One could hit Paris this turn, or it could move towards another target. Similarly, the Rheims stack has not moved or fired yet. It was moderately successful last turn and knocked Rheims pop down. If it can reduce the MI to 2 and 3 hp then the tanks may be able to take them down. Alternatively merge the two stacks for maximum artillery effect. The armies seem to cover them OK, but the Rheims stack may be vulnerable if it comes off the mountain.
I had an announcement that the French were building the UN again, but can't see it in F7. Is this because we are at war? If so we don't know where it is. But they are now only building 3 spaceship parts, and before they were bulding 4. So they've changed from a spaceship part to UN somewhere.
We have a spy in Paris. We are still average vs France. All their strength is in 114 MI. Their tanks have been dying, and they now only have 2.
Iroqoois: We need to renegotiate the oil deal. We have lots of resources he wants, and we can get Computers as well if we give him about 300 gpt plus resources. Don't know if we need Computers, though.
America: Is gone :D. We came out of mobilisation in the interturn when America died. You choose if we want to remobilise. I think yes, but it's your call. You may want to review whether to start some peacetime builds before doing it.
Keltoi: I've taken Entremont this turn. It has a very high flip chance, so prolly need to abandon it. I kept it in case you want to do anything with the route it provides.

Sounds like the French aren't too interested in counterattacking us. The Artillery earned their pay in Lyon. :cool: That is an awful lot of MI to overcome. I'll look at the save in the morning . We need to try to find out where that UN build switched to. Taking Paris should also relieve some pressure on us.

With our spy do we have enough money to investigate cities prior to attacking them, to get an idea of the number of units in defense and how many of our artillery we need to use? This could also help us find the new UN city.
Question: will a city flip the turn after capture or do we get a 1 turn grace period? I have had them flip the 2nd turn but I can't recall one flipping immediately after capture. This would allow us to hold the city and repostion troops (mainly artillery) and then abandon the city after selling off everything.

I've never before captured a city with a flip risk at almost 50%, and in any case I would then have had to defend it during the interturn. If it had flipped I could have lost a lot of units. The CRpMapStat reported safe garrison was 150, if I recall correctly, more than our total unit count.
I was fully expecting to be hit big-time by a major offensive. I was very surprised when Joan didn't send in 50 MI - I would have in her position. It must have been teh armies that stopped her. If I had tried to defend Lyons I would have had to split the stack, keeping a force on the artillery stack and putting some troops into the city. With only one army, part of the force would be far more vulnerable. Leaving it minimally defended would have meant it would definitely be recaptured, and that would mean we'd have to do it all over again.
It would be a high risk to take with 50% of our total army, for the sake of a possible couple of movement points.
I usually take a city rather than razing it on impact, then decide whether to keep it or sell it off and abandon it. In the case of Lyons there was nothing to sell. It had a free barracks, and a hospital and SunTzu you can't sell. The rest were either culture buildings or ones we destroyed with our arty.
DJMGator13 Feb 09, 2005, 11:07 AM In the Bugs3 SG (SID level) I was able to capture and hold for a turn a size 12+ city, move my troops that turn and the next turn, and then abandon it, but I was not facing counterattacks (we had already been pounding on them for several turns). Definately not worth the risk of losing troops this early in the French campaign.
Could you tell if you were getting any help from our allies?
AlanH Feb 09, 2005, 12:36 PM Yeah! Lyons wasn't just 12+, ot was pop 23! I think flip probability relates to pop count. My guess is that people think there's a grace period simply because they don't understand probabilities. Flip probablility increases towards 100% as each turn passes. The flip probability given by CRpMapStat is just the probability that the city will flip on any one turn. Most of our vulnerable cities are well below 5%, so a first turn flip is very unlikely.
I saw some skirmishes between France and our allies, but I had concentrated our resources in the places that mattered, and so didn't have much of the map lit up during the interturns. Japan had a crack at an MI with a longbow on our home island :eek: And I saw some ships limping around with damage. Iroquois certainly had some fights, and Japan lost an isolated city in the north of France, so I think we have some useful support there.
I didn't answer your question about the spy. We can investigate individual cities without using the spy, of course, and each one costs from 150-ish to 300-ish, which will be one or two turns income after we've re-established ouur oil deal. Stealing the plans or sabotaging a city or stealing Computers would cost a four figure number, which we don't have. Doing it safely, to avoid losing our spy, would cost a high 4-figure number.

All 3 of the Iroquois' sources of oil have been Bombed by the French so neither of us can build Transports or Tanks. I've lost 3 transports (2 of them empty) to Destroyers and the like.
The only thing I can think to do is to attack the Vikings. They have a source in the western chain of islands near their capitol.
I'm just worried that by attacking them we will muss up one or more of our alliances. I'll post my log and a save a bit later after I sleep.

As far as I recall the only thing we had going with the Vikings was a RoP, unless you've negotiated anything new. You can choose to exploit it to kill them, or declare from outside their territory to maintain our ability to renew our existing RoPs. I would do the latter, as we may well need to be able to rape Japan and/or Iroquois when the time comes.
But we should do almost anything to get our hands on that oil. It'll do our treasury no end of good as well not to be paying anyone for it.

Not sure, but I would think our MPP is a higher level than their MA. So it should happen as you say. We attack the VIK and then the IRQ will declare on them when they attack us. I'm wondering if you could declare and then "cheaply" sign the IRQ to a MA against the VIK as well, just to be on the safe side. I'm not too concerned here because I think it's a rep hit but if we have no troops in their territory our ROP ability will remain.

If you attack both Viking cities and eliminate the Vikings :( ;) during your turn, in other words, The Vikings will be eliminated before the interturn, there should be no effect on the status of the Iroq. It should be as though it never happened to them, afaik.

MAs are against a specific civ - in this case the French. As long as the Vikings don't have an MPP with anyone then no one will object to us declaring on them. Our MPP with Iroquois will only cut in if the Viking counter-attack takes place in our territory.

Which would be unusual. Mistfit can attest to the fact that in TDG we waited to capture a JPN city until it finished building a Wonder it had already started. I wonder if it has anything to do with the amount of shield in the box. Will the AI switch a build and waste shields or does that lock it in until it has completed the Wonder build?

I'm going to leave the rest of the units un touched as I found this helpful when Alan gave me the game. I think it help to get acclimated before hitting enter and having all hell break loose.

We are still average to the French but we've put a good dent in them
2 workers/3rifle/24cavs (this seems to be what they are building now that Alan razed their Rubber)/1 Inf/ 71 MI/ 7 Arti / 1 caravel / 7 ironclad / 6 destroyers (these are bothersom as they keep killing our transports)/ 12 bombers / 1 leader still unused.
We got dragged into a war with the Aztec by the Japanese IBT. We are kinda thin down there so you will have to arrange what we have to work with. My suggestion is to get the English involved by selling the rocketry to go to war against them. I'd also gift them Warwick as will probably flip to them anyway and it has a tank sitting outside of it right now and it's empty of our units.
All of our Arti are in one stack outside of Marseilles. I've found that if the units in the city are yellow and the city is not over 14 or 15 in size that we can take 'em with "acceptable" losses. Although I just now realize that Marseilles is on a hill :(
The group to the north I would head down to take Makkah and the Kawauka. From there I'd back up and take down Bagdad as small as possible and then try to keep the city as a place to heal and drop troops into.
I have a galleon outside of Dallas and my plan was to upgrade it to transport and gload it with our few Marines to go hit some islands like Tolosa (keltoi to the north of our homeland)
Last thing is to watch out for Keltic Ironclads that are Hanging around our northern Island.

I think longer turn sets are more efficient, as there's a big overhead in getting to grips with this cpmplex situation when each player picks it up. But the turns are also long and challenging, so do whatever you can. If turn 16 is the culmination of a big build-up, don't worry about taking an extra one to accomplish the goal.

1) don't sweat that we haven't been able to trade for COMP, I don't think we need it - I'd continue to rush some naval escort and start gearing up for the island hooping, I'd include a carrier and more bombers in case of MI marines alone may not be enough
2) finish off France
3) next would be IRQ to cleanse the NE portion of continent, then JPN as we paint the world brown, I'd leave ENG and AZT for last (they are not a serious threat)
4) keep an eye on UN build (shows on F7 as expected)
5) I purchased 2 destroyers (Mpondo & Tsingtao) to escort the 2 transports to the SW islands, there are tanks waiting in Stockholm to load next turn
6) started a transport back to Moscow core to join the other transport there to go after FRA island area
7) I've got a transport with 6 marines unescorted south of Calixtlahuaca - I unloaded the marines incase of attack - they were headed to the SE islands but it needs an escort and more troops
8) I haven't been rushing tanks recently we are producing them fast enough
9) You have 5 airports in the NY core, 1 in Moscow, 1 in Stockholm and 1 in Damascus - not sure that you need more
10) Just realized we are no longer mobilized - must have happened when I eliminated the first civ - I'd goahead and remobilize, we are only building military anyway
11) I left a few troops unmoved, mainly 1 in each big stack so it would jump you to those areas before your first full turn
12) Bengal and Snagha are 5 to 10% flip chance but they have oil, so I'd keep them for now - should probably leave only 1 unit in them to fight the resistance - they rate should go down as we continue to take FRA cities
13) Don't forget that JPN and MON have a MPP
14) some workers may appear to be on auto but they aren't, I used the Crtl J move command and the ones with no movement points this turn will move next turn

Japan is now building the UN and, as of the starting turn, had 17 turns left in the build in Kyoto. I'll attach the screen shot at the bottom. I also managed to plant spys with both Japan and the Iroquois. The 1844 screenshots are attached of their armies.
The Keltoi have been eliminated. :cool:
Japan came demanding oil and, as the largest French cities are now rubble or about to be rubble, I showed them the door. They declared war. They are causing a little bit of problems in the deep south, but nothing serious. There are 20 Tanks waiting on their doorstep to open the way to Kyoto in a turn or two, another U.N. build down the drain.
Despite the fact that it is slow and cumbersome to use, the Artillery has been the saviour of this game! :eek: I reduced Besancon from size 20 with 5 vet MI and 3 consript Rifle to ashes in 1 turn with 50 guns. It took about 10 Tanks to take it. :D But it took 3 turns to set up. :cry:

The good news is that the French and Japanese are no longer on their home continent. I'll include some screen shots taken from the 1870 CRpMapStat look at the save. Please feel free to abandon as many cities as you like. I needed them to move within the Japanese territory and keep the Aztecs from settling too much.
The bad news is that the Japanese capital has moved to a single-tile island off the Iroquois coast that it took me almost 20 minutes to find. Once you find Salamanca, go east about 8 or 9 tiles and you'll see it. In the three island group to the south you'll find a transport and Marines to help you. The other bad news is that there are tanks scattered all ove the former Japanese territory and I decided not to waste a turn pulling them all back together again. :crazyeye:
I saw about 1 flip every 3 turns or so, so you'll find a tank near a group of cities, flip protection. :D
Here is The After Action Report.
The Japanese and French have both been driven from their original continent. I created one accidental problem for you to solve Alan, and that is Izumo, the Japanese captal is on a 1-tile island, 4 squares weat of Allegheny, near the Iroquois capital. It took me ages to find it, so at least you’ll know where it is. A Transport nearly full of Marines is located to the south in those little island where Dover is, the rest of the Marines are on Shimonoseki. There are no escort ships, but I haven’t seen much of AI navies for a while. Oh, the Japanese are building the U.N. in the city on our home continent, Gandasetaigon. It won’t take long to get it, I almost got it but for the RNG. :rolleyes: A redlined rifle took down one of our Tanks!
I have stacked a ton of Tanks and Artillery near Salamanca, the Iroquois capitla, for your use. There are 3 turns remaining in our ROP with them. We are strong compared to them and have a spy so you can check out their force structure, 2 tanks and 45 Mech Inf, atm. You have full passage rights all over the iroq. Continent atm.
All the other civs can be cleaned up in time. Most are on the ropes.
There is a force of 2 Battleships, 3,soon to be 4, Transports full of Artillery and Tanks, bound for Dijon. Also, once you get Toulouse safe from flips (take Gandasetaigon and Yokohama), it should provide a base, in range, for your aerial armada to bomb them into the stone age.
BTW – There are still many units that were moved on rails, so they have all their movement points should you wish to change strategy. I used the airfields to great effect moving tanks quickly from lace to place. The Bombers are great that way as well. Very flexible.
Sorry about the mess, there are Tanks everywhere as I chased down the Japanese cities. We have 139 Tanks and 103 Artillery pieces. Please enjoy using them to great effect on the Iroquois, sort of a repeat of the French, only not so tough!! Any questions, please let me know and good luck and Happy Hunting!! The Japanese have 40 Infantry and 9 Marines. No Tanks or Mech Inf!!
I plant a spy with the Iroquois for 123 Gold.

OK, we need to keep an eye on F7, for U.N. builds, and an eye on breaking treaties, although I’m not sure that matters much.

45 cities is all we have left to clean up! That's quite a turnaround from when Alan started our latest offensive against the Frence only a few turn sets ago. :goodjob:
If it is quicker I wouldn't feel bad about taking small Iroquois cities for peace and turning around and declaring war on them.
Don't worry about hitting the domination limit because even if we captured all of the remaining cities in their current expanded state we would only have 976 more tiles.
Have at 'em Alan. I don't plan on having much of a game left to complete if it even gets around to me again.

I went though our last 3 or 4 turn sets just to watch the colors disappear :evil: I also Like it because at the left of the map (which I cropped) it shows a legend with the color next to the civ name. I am horrible at remembering which color is which civ.

45 Cities in 15 turns may be a little much, but there aren't that many big Iroquois cities left, perhaps 8 or 10. One thing I learned to do to speed things up was to take the Artillery and keep it in 2 or 3 even sized groups. As you well know, the problem with Artillery is that you can't just move and shoot, but move and wait and move and shoot. I found it faster to leap frog the stacks of artillery so that one is always setting up while another is firing. The cities were generally close enough to allow this to work with minimal time lost.
The Aztecs are pretty backwards and, iirc, the English may put up some fight.
The hardest part for me was getting oriented to where things were after you all tore through so much, and finding all the units. I may have made that harder by fortifying some of them, sorry Alan. :blush: I tried to think of something I could do to make it easier, but failed to come up with anything useful.
AlanH Feb 15, 2005, 11:48 AM I'm going to give it a shot. Yes, the Iroquois only have two cities over size 12, but they do have 45 MI in their 23 cities.
I'm thinking in terms of a timetable like: France, Japan, Aztecs (RoP rape), England, Iroquois (RoP rape), overlapping, with a side order of Indian biryani somewhere along the way. I suspect all but Iroquois wll be dead in eight turns. If I can also have taken out part of the Iroquois core by then I stand a chance of finishing it in the next seven.
Logistics is a challenge, as ever. I think I've found the best sea transport options, but lack of rails in the south west may slow things down a bit.

This is where combat settlers would allow you to wrap it up quickly, but not in this game. If the cultural boundaries are tight enough you might try only moving in part of the artillery to attack with and then move the rest before abandoning the city. You could rush a bunch of bombers instead.

We are at war with France and Japan
France has three cities, all on the small island east of Moscow.
Japan also has three cities, two are east of Moscow. Their capital is on a single tile island east of Iroquois. We have troops in the area but no boats. Interestingly CRpMapstat says we have a 12 turn deal outstanding with Japan :hmm:
We are at peace with the other four and have RoPs with England, Iroquois and Aztecs. We have no deals in progress with India.
We have no resource imports. We are exporting coal, saltpeter and incense to Iroquois and horses to Aztecs.
We are paying 135 gpt to England for an alliance against Japan. We receive 38 gpt from Iroquois for saltpeter.
Japan: 3 cities.
Marines from Shimonoseki in the south can travel to Izumo to take out the Japanese capital in 3 or 4 turns.
We should take Gandesetaigon next turn. We have a transport that can move troops to take Yokohama next turn, and then take them on to the French island. Target turn 405.
France: 3 cities.
There are 5 military units left in France - 4 mech infantry and 1 cavalry. We'll land a transport full of tanks and they should be able to finish France. Target turn 404
Aztecs: 8 cities.
We have 19 turns of RoP left with them, which we'll have to renege on. As I don't see any need for further RoP renewals now, I'll exploit it to get troops into position during the next couple of turns to kill them fast. There are 4 towns scattered around the western archipelago. We have troops there and can get to them. 4 towns on their mainland home territory will fall to our existing troops there. Target turn 405.
England: 7 cities.
When we kill Japan our alliance with England ends along with payment of 135 gpt. We'll take them out next. They only have infantry, four towns on the southern mainland, one in former northern France, and two in the southern islands. We need some transport for the troops we have in the south to reach the latter, and the others will be reachable by our existing mainland troops. We have two transports near Moscow that can head that way. Target turn 408.
India: 1 city.
Take out with troops in the north.
Iroquois: 23 cities.
We have a spy. They have 45 MI, 5 marines and two tanks. Only 2 metropolis'. We'll focus our arty on these, take out the core first, then spread out and mop up the rest. Target turn 415.
Rush some units. Move the stack from Snagarst to the eastern mainland under escort. Land 12 units, 6 more ready to move next turn. Move two transports west towards southern islands. Load up extra tanks into transport near Darhan to move to Yokohama then France. Move a stack of workers to Goteburg to embark for the western archipelago. We need better road/rails over there. Galleon from Elephantine towards Dallas for upgrade. Move a tank ready to attack a loose Japanese marine near Coventry. Discover 2 more in the area. I think I'll let them have their wicked way with Coventry. If they capture it I can clean it up before I declare on England.

AlanH Feb 16, 2005, 09:04 AM A couple of pointers I picked up from my turn set:
1. During the end game you just throw everything at the enemy until you can't reach any more cities. There are no prizes for having units standing around at the end (although we had plenty of those). Bombardment didn't give me the red-lined defenders I hoped for in the initial hit on the Iroquois, but I just threw tanks at the problems until they went away.
2. When you can't reach any more AI cities don't forget to check for the ones you forgot :hmm: I nearly missed out on taking out Hastings during my rape of England, and I did forget to deal with Kiohero, the odd Iroquois town on a peninsula on our west coast. The latter could have delayed the end, but luckily the attack Hiawatha launched from there in the inter-turn didn't take out our local town, and we had enough units within striking distance to take it out next turn. Our knight army showed his mettle, taking down a rifle.
3. If you are going to RoP rape do the job properly! I didn't put our troops within range of all the locations I could have before declaring - notably the ones near Moscow, so the Iroquois finale took a turn or so longer than necessary.
4. Lethal air bombardment is awesome. I couple of times in this turn set, and once in my previous one, I was able to use bombers to wipe out all the defenders in towns and then walk in unchallenged.
5. Short rushing isn't only useful when a city is producing a small number of the unit shields required in each turn. New York was producing 90 shields per turn, and I was using short rushing in New York to get a tank every turn. For 80 gold I rushed a worker to put 10 shields in the empty box each turn, then switched to tank to get the other 90 shields. 80 gold per tank was a bargain basement price. The alternative was to wait two turns for each tank and waste 80 shields building each one, or to build infantry every turn. I don't build that many infantry! :rolleyes:

Great Turnset Alan. I told you that you'd be able to pull it off :D I'm glad it was you playing that turnset as I'm sure you shaved quite a few turns off from what I could have done!
