Found this interesting: in 1987, the Russians launched the "Soviet Space Battle Station Skif", a protype for combating the American Strategic Defense Initiative. It failed, and the program was eventually scrapped; the link below contains some commentary from the son of one of the scientists who worked on the project, as well as some very cool pictures.
