View Full Version : Barbarrians Not So Raging

Hello All!

I was wondering if there is anyway to make the barbarrians a little more aggresive. I always love to play with them on "raging", but I really cannot tell any difference. I usually play at Regent or above. I remember in Civ2 when you put Barbarrians on raging they would never give up attacking you, never. Any ideas? I am not really good at changing "code", so if that is the case please use small simple words and directions. What can I say I grew up in Georgia. Hee hee hee. :D

I'm not a mac user, but this still applies to general civ...

You can only keep barbarians at the preset levels (ie; raging, sedentary, roaming). The higher the level, the more the chance of popping barbarians from huts (which indirectly adds more barbarians). However, you can't edit any files to make, say 10 barbarians appear every x turns. Once you get to the Middle Ages, 'uprisings' can start, and HUGE (10+) stacks of barbarians will start appearing in unconquered lands. That's why it's good to grab as much land before the MA so it isn't as bad. Hope this gives you a bit more knowledge. :)

Disclaimer: I don't have a mac

The thing is, in Civ3, once the map is inhabited by the civs, barbarians will not generate. In Civ2, barbarians kept coming in waves, at least from what I recall.

Hmm...this is a bug with the Windows version as well. This was corrected by adding the line NoAIPatrol=0 at the end of our conquests.ini file. Perhaps there is something similar for the Mac?

Macs shouldn't have this bug, as it was introduced in PTW, IIRC.

Macs shouldn't have this bug, as it was introduced in PTW, IIRC.... not even in PtW as I understand it. I thought they did it in Conquests to speed up the interturn as that flag stops the AI exercising its troops between your turns.

Right, the NoAIPatrol=0 was in C3C only...that's why for the GOTM they encourage you to add it back in so barbarians are more agressive. I had the NoAIPatrol line in my first post when I was typing, and then I went: "Wait, Mac players don't have Conquests...".

If you added NoAIPatrol=1 to PTW's ini file, the barbarians would act like Conquest's default. It's just that the bug isn't evident in PTW because the barbs move around randomly when they don't have anything better to do.

So, will NoAIPatrol=1 work for Mac in any fashion at all. And thanks to everyone.

There's no file that looks like the equivalent to the Windows version's .ini file as far as I can tell. ~/Library/Preferences/Civ3 Preferences might contain those values, but it's not readable with anything other than a classic resource editor or a hex editor, and gives very few clues about its contents.

In any case, even if there is any concept of an AIPatrol flag in version 1.29, it's already set to the active level. So if you *could* change AIPatrol on the Mac you'd only make them less active than they are now, which wasn't your stated objective.

Well, that is that then. Thanks to you all. I guess I can't be a masochist afterall. Oh well...
