SGOTM4 Carthage - Results and Congratulations.

Since all teams played the variant this month it was decided that the Green Laurel would not be awarded.

The Gold Laurel for fastest variant finish is awarded to:-

Team offa
offa
gozpel
klarius
Northern Pike
grs
WackenOpenAir

Well done guys!
It should be noted that team offa beat the original Jason best conquest date by 34 turns as a 5CC. Truly impressive. I'll have to "tinker" with their save for SGOTM6 :joke:

Despite a fine 20K game, the recipients of The Wooden Spoon for the lowest Jason score are:-

Team alamo

Unlucky guys :salute:

Please join me in congratulating everyone who participated in a series of great games.

Congratulations team offa for a great date and Jason score (over 9000 with only 5 cities). And good job teams tao and Smackster for beating team Bede in the quest for fastest 20k victory.

Great game!
Good job team Offa, you guys did extremely well :goodjob: .

M-B thanks for all your time and all the efforts you put into this.! :goodjob:

i have a suggestion... a small one...
SGOTM3 was quite hard to play, few teams actually lost the game... Honestly, i liked SGOTM3 better than SGOTM4 because of the difficulty level...
SGOTM4 was quite easy and SGOTM5 looks as easy ("no spoiler info" my guess is based on the regent level game + some twists).
My suggestion to M-B is to make SGOTMs as hard as possible so every team plays on the edge of loosing... That will make any victory more valuable even for the teams who don't get laurels.
I don't want change a subject of this thread and i also like to see how many people share my opinion. May be M-B can create a poll asking if we want every SGOTM game to be the "extreme" games, or keep rotating difficulty levels like we have it in regular GOTMs.

It was a great game for us, being focused on conquest from the start helped of course.
Thanks to my brilliant teammates :borg::borg::borg::borg: :crazyeye:

Congrats to Team Offa.

One interesting thing I noticed. The Jason scores match up exactly to the finish dates. (With two minor aberations in games that finished withing 5 or so turns of each other)

This is because the earlier you finish, the earlier sooner the Jason curve takes over. So effectively, you are no longer constrained by a 5cc rule after your victory.

It seems to me that Jason is not a fair way to compare 5cc or 1cc games.

I just found this a interesting, no complaints at all.

Thanks to MB and AlanH (and anyone else that I forgot to mention) for their work on this. And a shout out to all the teams.

It seems to me that Jason is not a fair way to compare 5cc or 1cc games.Quite right. Jason assumes you would milk if you continued, and gives you the score you would have added for doing so. The earlier your victory the more credit you get. It doesn't know or care that you are playing with one hand tied behind your back.

@NP: when will we see you entering the GotM? I mean, what's dropping one S, eh? :mischief:

Thanks for asking. :) I've tended to assume that there's a GOTM-specific learning curve, on which I'd be a long way behind at this point, but I really should.

Congratulations Team Offa! And very good job to Team's Tao and Smackster! :goodjob: It took an outstanding Conquest effort to beat two very good 20K games! 3 Teams within 5 turns of each other - that's very close competition!

A side note: best Jason date comparison doesn't do a good or fair job for our team's SS game. I don't think there's a good way to compare our game to the others, but I'm sure we're not within 6 turns of a reasonable date. Nor 16.

A funny thought occured to me: if a Team won by Histograpic Victory, at 0 turns relative to Best Date, wouldn't they have won the Gold Laurel, and likely the Wooden Spoon as well?

:rotfl:

Of course in this game to get a Histographic victory, you would probably have had to also have the potential for a conquest, else an AI would have had more score.

Absolutely! You'd have to take out all but 1 civ, and leave it with 1 city, tundra or Island, surrounded by Naval vessels - typical milking situation. I guess the choice would be, finish the Conquest taking a chance that someone else beats you, or go Histographic and get Best Date for certain!

How the mighty are fallen. It looks like zamint3 and Mauer were fairly important members of our team.
Congratulations to Offa for having the brains and guts to go for conquest, and also to the teams that managed cultural victory a hundred turns before us.

I think the Rome game was too difficult. If you read the threads you will find that there was a distinct loss of harmony within some of the teams that lost towards the end, and a lot of people stopped playing afterwards. If it stops being friendly, then it stops being fun.

Now that I am creating new maps for SGOTM it should be possible to create scenarios that suit the variant. How well I'll manage that only time will tell.
The current game is my first official map, and I wanted to make it interesting rather than difficult. The next game is considerably more difficult.

If you would like to start a poll on difficulty level then please feel free to do so. I do not have sole ownership of thread starting in the SGOTM forum. If enough people participate in the poll then I will act on its' result.

I don't want this discussion to continue in this thread, but look forward to participating in it again within the thread for the poll you are about to post. ;)
