I bought Pirates a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, the only judgement I can give on it so far is that, judging from the manual, it looks really good.

The problem is this:

Whilst installing the game, an error is always encountered about half way through the install (but before disk 2 is required).

Apparently there is a corrupted .cab file (Progra~1.cab). After testing, this file does indeed seem to be corrupt.

I've checked a load of internet forums and browsed through the first 7 pages of around 10 relevant google searches. All I have discovered is that I am by no means alone: many other people report this same problem - and some have solved it. Unfortunately, all they say at the end of these threads is just that: "I solved it. it's great." No-one ever looks at that post again, and so no-one knows how to solve it :(

I have tried every trick in the book, but feel free to bombard me with any ideas you have, however obvious.

I was wondering if any of you beautiful people have had/heard of the same problem? I've sent a couple of emails to the helpline, but, as typical of all helplines, no reply.

If I don't solve it soon, i'll just have to take it back to the shop on saturday - help would be apprieciated.

Try to close your antivirus software and firewall and install then. (And of course don´t use the internet while doing this ;) ). Sometimes this helps a lot...

I hope you do not have to return it. It is totally addictive. I have not played CIV since :D

Bring it back to the shop.

Really, no need to stick with a severely flawed product. Happened to me with my Joint Operations CD, it was readable, but pure crap, 2 of my 3 systems could not read the CD.

-> sometimes they moan in shops, but hey, buying the product and then downloading the pirated version perhaps, because the original CD is in bad shape, this is really not necessary. You can demand a copy that works as it should.

@taé shala: --Tried it, but thanks anyway.

@Longasc: --I don't think it's my copy which is faulty, as many people have had the same problem on the internet... Or maybe there was a faulty batch that Atarai kept quiet?!?

Hey, it might be that your copy even works in another drive, but it is a low quality copy. It does not work proper, as you said.

Just because the whole batch is flawed, this is no reason to accept such low quality. I returned my copy of Joint Ops and got a copy that did not need 1x only read and stuff like that to be installed at all. It was installed without any probs within minutes, not over half an hour.

Really, you should return this copy. Its resale value will be in doubt, too, as most people would really be angry at you if you sell this game for only 5 EUR/$/pounds only at eBay and would protest if they cannot read the CD...

Well I might return it then. Problem is, I bought it online, so i'll need to post it of and order another copy...

It works on one of my other computers, but not because of the drive. I can copy all of the files of the CD onto any computer, but can't read that particular CAB file.

I may decide to return it afterall...

I excahnged it... same error message.

I managed to install it however... I decided not to try and run it of my current, new 52X CD-rom drive, and tried a 6-year old 4X one... and it worked. weird.

And no, before anyone askes, my CD rom dirve is just a normal one, not a CDR, not a DVD rom drive, etc...

Copy all the files (hiden too), from CD1 into c:\Pirates, then,
Copy all the files (hiden too), from CD2 into c:\Pirates, then
install Pirates!.
You get error when, the installer doesn´t find the CD2, it´s all.

Maybe then "nero driverspeed" helps. Just a try .

It really isnt a problem any more - it just wouldn't install of that CD drive. Whatever the reason, it's working now and has been for over a month - this thread is kinda old, yaknow.

I had the same problem with the Progra~1.cab file being corrupted.

I found a way to repair the CAB file using a nifty CAB fixing tool.
If anyone is still having this problem, you are welcome to email me and I'll send you the cab fixer (it's small - under 1MB).

Man-o-War, I had the same problem, returned it to the store, exchanged it for a new copy and everything loaded fine the clerk at the return counter said they have had a few copies of this exchanged due to this problem. Try it, it solved my install problems.
