I've noticed that one of the most common problems is a newbie creating a thread it getting closed down then he posts a moderator action discussion thread and gets beat with the ban stick.

Perhaps if there was a line in the moderator action text that says, "Creating threads to discuss moderator actions is against forum rules, if you have any questions/objections regarding the action, please PM a moderator or Thunderfall, DO NOT START A NEW THREAD"

Perhaps but then the mods may as well post the entire rules page in case there are other cases of confusion...

i've seen that happen 1 time, no wait, 2, or, no. It was 3. :)
It says read the forum rules. you read the forum rules and discover it's a rule and thus! no more problem

Most people won't read the rules.

I say Perfection is right. (No surprise there :p)

EDIT: Why not have [mod5] be an optional one with the resolve problem w/PM?

:hmm: Most of the "newbies" who have had that problem (and it really isn't all that common) have been DLs of already banned posters. At least, that is my impression. (But then, we mods get to log and discuss all our bans in Staff, and we can usually identify DLs pretty easily. ;) )

Well, I know I did it when I was a newbie.

From my experience...most people who (no matter what) discuss moderator actions within a day or so of joining are either

a. DLs of already banned people. (not that I would know...or maybe I do?)
b. younger members pre-teen or early teen who have a problem with authority
c. older members who have a problem with authority
d. people who had they continued to post would have just caused trouble and irriated me anyway so it is best that they not post in the first place.

Members (especially new ones) are not typically banned just for posting a thread asking questions about Moderator actions. Of course, the thread will be closed, but they should get directed as to the proper way to ask their question.

There are old people who have a problem with authority?.

CivGeneral starts to picture all of the senior citizens starting a massive riots after the government takes away there driver's licences (Hypothedicaly speeking)

I would agree with the mods, often times there are some bad apples that were banned and often times create a DL just to cause more trouble.

Is perfection a DL? :mischief:

(Sorry, couldn't resist. ;) )

And what does "DL" stand for?

That was the point :p The rules can be read elsewhere, the problem is that people tend to not bother reading the rules...

I find that the real problem is that some people just don't care. It doesn't matter how much you try to warn, or punish, or threaten them, they just refuse to listen to you. Even if you made reading the rules a mandatory part os signing up by making them check a little "I agree" box (Like with Licence agreements on software) 90% of people will just skip right over it without a second thought. It's just one of those things we'll never be able to overcome without some form of mind controll... :mischief:

There should be a rules quiz that has to be passed before you can activate your account. :D

Would existing members have to retake the test every year?

Hmm...I think the mods should definately have to take that quiz...

I'd pass it...I know that. I wonder if anyone else would though.

As long as it would be multiple choice and not short answer. Essay would be good though. Yeah...essay. :)

Why not a forum Simulator, so we can expose the potential user to various stimuli in a controlled environment and record their reactions for furture reference?

Don't need to draw attention to people who only want attention. ;) Link removed (and that thread was cleaned-up anyway).

Public discussion of moderator actions is something that is generally given a bit of leniency when done by a new poster. It is more of a problem when you get people who INSIST on posting about them multiple times.

We should get Donald Trump as a moderator on this forum. That way, the text will be:

Moderator Action: You're Fired!

No, that isn't in the mod tags, I just used a series of tags to make it look like it... I wasn't trying to impersonate a mod... It's just a bit o' good-natured humor... If you want it edited out, please tell me...Don't ban me.:(

Donald Trump? Why waste money on Donald Trump, while you already have Ronald Trump right here :smug:
btw, mod tag or not, if you use the term "moderator action" in a post you'll probably get a warning..

What if we removed the mod tags from the quote and just left the text as normal?

@Ainwood: A little slow on the edit there. :p ;)

Well, people get banned for many reasons and they probably deserved it :) I've seen some way out-of-line posts here and there and think that some people should cut down their beer-consumption while posting.

I never got banned so far, but then I'm a nice guy.

Or just humble and meek. Or a yellow-belly. :)

The moderators have got the tools they need to get the job done, and they have to think of the whole community. {suck up} So I think they do a good job as it is.

So far i have been lucky not to have been banned a few times by the Mods. I have had a few threads closed because they were not appriopriate. The mod tag that Perfection came up with is quite good. I thought he would try to do his best to violate as many rules as possible.
