I am starting work on a new mod soon, Battlefield Asia, and I'd like new techs, but I don't want to rely on anyone else to make them for me.

Shiro is also helping in the mod, with leaderheads, advice and such.

What I did was I found a picture that I wanted to use. Made it the right the size, and then pasted it into another icon, that way I didn't had to worry about palette.

Well, that depends on what you're asking. Converting a photo is very easy, making a CG picture is harder...
BTW, it's always good to post what gfx software you're using.

Yoda Power's method worked for me. You can almost certainly find a suitable picture on the Internet (there are lots of CG pictures out there, too, which is handy). Use the old Google image finder and you're away. No doubt our resident LH and unit creators have the ability to create tech images of their own, but I certainly don't.

If it helps, it's a good idea to use the unit icons file as a base. Load it up, resize to the appropriate size. Then load up your picture, resize accordingly, and copy and paste it into the icons file. Save under the appropriate name. The reason this works is that the icons file has the requisite number of colours etc etc, but it contains a wide range of colours, and ought to preserve the colours of your picture pretty well.
