I think the two most interesting periods in History were, whithout any doubt, the Crusades, with the European and the Arabs fighting against each other, and the WWII.
Because the WWII was very interesting, at the beginning the Germans winning, but at the end the allies had them in their hands.

Am I the only one here who loves the period of the Christological controversies in the eastern roman empire, being a bishop in Alexandria for example would have been quite cool.

Europe from 1871 to 1914. It was such a period of ideological and scientific dynamism, with so many ideas and countries and people struggling for dominance. It's a shame that it derailed so horribly.

Me too. But which period of controversies? Cyril and Nestorius? Severus of Antioch? Baradeus? Maximus the Confessor? John Damascene?

Relatedly, I think the golden age of Makuria, seventh and eighth centuries, would have been fun.
