View Full Version : Rise of Rome revisited...
Knight-Dragon Jan 31, 2002, 09:19 PM I have yet to see a nuclear attack in Civ3.Neither have I. It'll be soon. :D
Alright, who do you all want to nuke? :mwaha: Let's get a consensus now.
donsig Jan 31, 2002, 09:25 PM 1930 - Fort Donsig founded.
I'm honored!:)
Toasty is up and I'm on deck.
Alright, who do you all want to nuke? Let's get a consensus now.
Hmmm.... Who are the bad guys now? joespaniel sent Elizabeth packing to a little island, the Iroquois are friendly to us, joe might not like nuking the Germans...
Who's left? Russia?
joespaniel Jan 31, 2002, 09:39 PM Bah! Nuke whoever is p!ssing us off right now.
Actually, Russia would be good. Then Germany and Iroquois might jump them too. Like Monkey in the Middle.
Eventually we will have to go over there and whup some @$$.
donsig Feb 02, 2002, 01:40 PM (Bump) Toasty - it's your turn!
Toasty Feb 02, 2002, 05:31 PM Okay, I'm playing now. Will post my summary within the hour.
Toasty Feb 02, 2002, 06:16 PM Toasty, head of the "Power to ME!" party, was elected Prime Minister to lead the Roman Republic into the modern era. He sets his goals on nuking someone and keeping the peace .
1937-1951
Good god, this is boring! I planted a spy in Berlin. Built Lugudunum. Hilariously, with that spy in Berlin, I initiated a propaganda campaign in Bonn and it switched over! We have a foothold on their continent! I tried in New Leipzig but failed . Since everyone is so hideously behind us in tech, I sold the Russians Electronics for Spices. Because of the trades, they are now cautious with us. Pulled back lux, now making 413 a turn (kicked up science rate after a while). With the extra scratch, I built up our culture. The Iroquois finished off the Brits.
Ohwell Feb 02, 2002, 07:42 PM I can't believe none of you have seen one! It is brilliant...
The ground shakes, and you see the missile hitting the target. I was playing a game as America, I played well into 3000 AD, built up 50 ICBMs. I was a super- Nation, making 800 g a turn, as well as luxuries at 30%. The only nation that was large was Russia, who had 20 or so cities. I took my nukes, and nuked all their cities, and all the land inbetween! So all their land was polluted desert! I then proceeded to nuke Tokyo, the last jap city, three times, and had 13 ICBMs leftover, which I used on myself:lol:
Nukes are fun, and they turn all csurrounding squares into desert unless they are mountain or hill, or ocean.
Like None of you noticed, I much earlier said to attack Russia.
Just park a few transports of modern armor neaby, nuke all their cities, and watch the carnage!
This game was fun, and I hope you win.
BTW, what would it be like if we LOST a SG? I would be suprised.
donsig Feb 02, 2002, 11:02 PM Are you still playing Toasty or did you forget to attach the sav?
sgrig Feb 03, 2002, 01:32 PM Could somebody please post a screenshot of the game? Please!
joespaniel Feb 03, 2002, 11:36 PM I would love to post a screen shot, with my brand-spanking-new image converter, except Ceaser Toastyus never attached his save!!! :hammer:
Hey! Toasty! *whistle*
joespaniel Feb 04, 2002, 09:23 AM C'mon! Were almost done! Lets finish it!
We need an attachment from Toasty!
joespaniel Feb 05, 2002, 09:20 AM I E-Mailed and PMed him, no answer.
We may have to start skipping some people...
Lets finish this game even if its just the 3 of us.
Toasty Feb 05, 2002, 02:12 PM Bah, sorry guys. I looked for it and I couldn't find it! I guess I just forgot to post it.
Someone should just go for me. I'm sorry I left you all in the dark like that.
joespaniel Feb 05, 2002, 03:29 PM donsig - tear it up! :goodjob:
It looks like you, me and KD. Lets win.:D
Ill still go with spaceship, unless you guys want to research ALL the tech and fight a modern war with the other continent. Radar artillery, mech inf, modern armor and stealth bombers.
That would be fun!
Knight-Dragon Feb 05, 2002, 07:51 PM Except for mech inf and some modern armor, never saw any of the rest, me......
Anything is fine with me. ;)
gonzo_for_civ Feb 05, 2002, 08:03 PM Don't forget me. I am able to play so put me back into the rotation. I will be able to play my next turn, if there is one:)
Oh yeah, I just got a brand-spankin' new image converter just to post screenshots here:D
donsig Feb 05, 2002, 10:56 PM gonzo: if you'r still there go ahead and play now. I'm up in the German game but can't play any until I get a few hours sleep.
gonzo_for_civ Feb 05, 2002, 11:00 PM (PLAYING)
Ill still go with spaceship, unless you guys want to research ALL the tech and fight a modern war with the other continent. Radar artillery, mech inf, modern armor and stealth bombers.
Ok, I will start a plan to eventually build all spaceship parts(we won't launch though) as a backup in case the modern war falls through(what are the chances??). I'll play now. Looks like fun. And, here's the clincher, I am gonna post a screenshot. Look for it in 24 hours maybe. :D
gonzo_for_civ Feb 05, 2002, 11:03 PM One more thing. I am downloading KD's last post file named paxromana.zip right???? I think that that is the current post since Toasty can't find his. I will wait to play until I receive confirmation.
joespaniel Feb 05, 2002, 11:15 PM Thats the one, Gonzo.
Well, lets go all out for science now. Raise the science rate until it hurts, switch outlying cities to wealth if need be.
SETI should be built in Rome, if we havent already. Research labs in our high commerce cities.
Lets become Rome, Empire of Computer Nerds! :enlighten
gonzo_for_civ Feb 05, 2002, 11:17 PM Lets become Rome, Empire of Computer Nerds!
Sounds like a plan to me:D <----- that coming from a big time computer nerd himself and proud of it :p
I will post in 12 - 24 hours depending on how much time I get to play.
joespaniel Feb 06, 2002, 03:40 PM BTW - When this game is done, which should be pretty soon, I have an evil idea for a new one. :satan:
Russia. Huge map with 16 civs. Pangaea. :mwaha:
It will be a playground for Cossacks! :nya2:
But not until this game is done. I will not commit to more than 3 at a time. Otherwise all my turns come up at once! :crazyeyes
So, lets go!:whipped:
gonzo_for_civ Feb 06, 2002, 10:47 PM I am gonna play finally and should post today or tomorrow.
Russia. Huge map with 16 civs. Pangaea.
Yikes, would it be possibly to take that down to large, 12 civs, and pangea. If not, I understand, but on Huge the turns take FOREVER. Micromanagement of the empire would suck!! If it's not possible, I won't be able to play, but I really would like to. But, like you said, let's finish this off first.
joespaniel Feb 07, 2002, 09:42 AM Well, your the one with the save... ;)
donsig Feb 07, 2002, 05:08 PM Gonzo... are you going to post the save?:)
gonzo_for_civ Feb 07, 2002, 07:28 PM Since Donsig asked so nicely, here's the save. Summary soon to follow. Only played 5 turns due to time constraints:(
gonzo_for_civ Feb 07, 2002, 07:36 PM Here's a bare-bones summary of my turns.
1938 - Founded Lugdunum
1940 - Started the IWP(explanation below)
1942 - Switched to a lot of research labs.
1944 - Even more research labs
1946 - Lutetia Founded
Below, you will see a settler sitting on a future city site. After the city currently on that site is starved to death, the settler can build a new city and that city will be able to build the Iron Works, if we win without any more wars, then this will probably not affect us because it will probably never get finished without a rushing. The ONLY reason I am building this city is because I rarely get the opprotunity to build a city with Iron Works. I just thought it would be fun. The Iron and the Coal are highlighted in green.
joespaniel Feb 07, 2002, 07:42 PM A good idea, Gonzo, but Im pretty sure that you CANNOT starve a city down to nothing in Civ3. Just size 1.
It will have so much corruption that it will probably be useless anyway.
But good eye!
May the reign of Ceasar Donsig be fruitfull.
gonzo_for_civ Feb 07, 2002, 07:59 PM A good idea, Gonzo, but Im pretty sure that you CANNOT starve a city down to nothing in Civ3. Just size 1.
If a city is size 2 and building a settlesr AND not growing, you can disband it.
It will have so much corruption that it will probably be useless anyway.
Yeah, much like my reign, unfortunately:rolleyes:
But good eye!
Thanks Joe:D!
Some may feel it trite to end on someone else's quote, but I feel it appropriate this time:
May the reign of Ceasar Donsig be fruitfull.
P.S. What'd you guys think of my screenshot! <-- one of my first attempts. :D
donsig Feb 07, 2002, 08:27 PM Great screenshot gonz! thanks:goodjob:
I've never disbanded a city in Civ 3 but I have heard of it being done. Was never sure what to make of that... Now I get to see if I can do it!;)
WoW! this is the first shot I've seen since we took over the whole continent. Last time I played we had only taken London!
joespaniel Feb 07, 2002, 08:30 PM If a city is size 2 and building a settlesr AND not growing, you can disband it.
Really! I didnt know that! Where did you find that out?
I wish I knew this a long time ago, it would have helped alot.
Thanks, Gonzo. Im going to try it in my SP game.

So, lets go!:whipped: I once played a 16 civ game on a pangaea map as the Chinese. Crushed the Americans, Indians, Greeks on MY continent. Then sent a fleet and army to vanquish Japan. :D
After that, brought my HUGE army of riders and muskets to the east and ready to embark on the greatest fleet in history to invade Egypt (and France, Zulu, Russia on that continent). :D It was 12xx or 13xx AD.
And then the game locked! No matter what I did, it hanged when the Persians and Aztecs went to war with each other. Had to give up on the game.
Moral of the story - while it's fun to play 16 civs, the possibility of game error also goes up. So...... Depends on whether you want to take the risk.
joespaniel Feb 07, 2002, 09:23 PM Yeah, I changed my mind. Too much time waiting in-between turns. Some day, though...
Im going to wait for awhile, and see what happens with the new German game. Its getting interesting! If Lkendter doesnt kill Palehorse76, we should do pretty well!
And I'll probably hold up the Chinese one until KD gets back from vacation. Thats really his baby, he dreamt it up. It turned out really, really good too.
And thus, I am eager to play the Romans to the end. I cant wait to try out smart weapons!
 Talk about chronological anachronisms. Romans with smart bombs.
Alright! donsig!
Lets show those commies who theyre screwing with!

And I'll probably hold up the Chinese one until KD gets back from vacation. Thats really his baby, he dreamt it up. It turned out really, really good too.Correction. It was Ohwell's idea first. :p
No need to hold up for me though, I'm sure you guys know what needs to be done. ;) :D :goodjob:
donsig Feb 08, 2002, 02:46 PM 1947: Roman rockets reach the heavens. Our scientists search for ways to leave the atmosphere. (Never seen this part of the tech tree before!:) ) Traded wine, rubber and flight to Russia for gems and spices. Sold incense to Germany.
1950: Germany and England make peace.
1953: Iroquois destroy England.
1954: Trade flight and dye to Iroquois for silk.
1957: Roman rockets reach space!:goodjob:
1961: Donsigipius steps down as leader of the great Roman republic.
donsig Feb 08, 2002, 02:52 PM I let our cities grow. Also built a few jets and cruise missiles. Some tactical nukes are in the works...
We'll have three new wonders within six turns. Satellite tech in a couple turns.
Golden Bear is next in the rotation. Not sure if he's still around. Joespaniel is after Golden Bear. If the Bear is AWOL then just go ahead and play joe. Post and let everyone know you're playing. If you're still out there Golden Bear let us know!
joespaniel Feb 08, 2002, 04:01 PM Im going to take it tonight. :D
Sounds great, so far. Just thought I would point out one thing:
The SETI only affects the city you build it in, unlike Civ2, where it put a research lab in all your cities. You can build SETI and a research lab in the same city.
I will probably switch it to be finished in Rome, unless Sparta has more commerce.
I am uncomfortable about giving all that technology to the Russians and Iroquois, I wouldnt have done it, but thats just me. I like to keep my competition weak, in case we have a war.
No problem. The luxuries will be worth it, if only to generate more science.
OK, here I go. Devoting all effort to the pursuit of radar artillery. :mwaha:
donsig Feb 08, 2002, 04:32 PM We've got rockets in space - the Russians and Iroquois are flying bi-planes. Besides we'll have nukes in a few turns if any of 'em get uppity.:rocket:
We're still a republic, too. We could switch to democracy and increase our science rate. I didn't want to deal with any anarchy so I stayed in republic. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' thinking.:)
joespaniel Feb 08, 2002, 05:47 PM I agree. Im not going to switch governments either.
However, I switched corrupt cities to wealth. Sorry!
And made ALOT of tax-collectors in those towns.
Notice how much MORE gold we are making.
joespaniel Feb 08, 2002, 05:50 PM I also switched wonders around, to get SETI in Rome.
207 science beakers / turn !!!
joespaniel Feb 08, 2002, 05:52 PM :mwaha: :mwaha: :mwaha: :mwaha: :mwaha:

A pity, you've never seen nukes, radar artillery, OR smart weapons! Shame...
C'mon guys! Havn't you even completed the game yet? :D
joespaniel Feb 08, 2002, 06:03 PM I "renegotiated" some trade agreements with Iroquois.
We still get furs, but they get one less luxury from us.
I stopped iron exports for money, but threw iron in toward fur.
I will cut-off all exports of luxuries for gold in 6 turns, when the treaties expire, with Germany and Russia.
We dont need the money, were rich!
I will make sure we have all 8 luxuries though.
Anyway, we are building a spaceship! Woo-hoo!
First 4 parts underway!
Loading tactical nukes onto subs, as they are built.
A good deterent. :mwaha:
Will try to reasearch as many techs as possible, in an attempt to get ALL of them. We might have enough time left, before 2000.
The UN vote went as follows:
Rome voted Ceasar.
Germany abstained.
Russia abstained.
Iroquois voted Hiawatha.
Inconclusive result, no secretary elected.

:D Ummmm, I was, um, sort of mad at a city....... Let's just say that led to me trying to lower it's population, eventually I was given the option to disband, I was happy:D
Can't wait to see Radar Artillery, It's my avatar, but I've never seen it in a game.
joespaniel Feb 08, 2002, 11:01 PM This ones for you, Gonzo.
I noticed the unused area near Rome, with iron & coal.
Im tired, time to get some sleep.
Look: I misspelled ferrous .
gonzo_for_civ Feb 09, 2002, 12:38 AM You can't see me right now, but I have an ear to ear grin :D
Thanks Joe. Hopefully, we will even get to finish building it:D:D

It will be done quicker once I mine that hill and lay track on it.
The best part is, Ferrous is only using tiles that were formerly outside of our city radius. It wont have room to grow past size 6, but at least we can say we built the Ironworks.
This is only the second time, ever, that Ive been able to build it.
joespaniel Feb 09, 2002, 07:54 AM 4 parts complete, 3 more underway.
Researching Nuclear Power to get The Laser, and the last 3 parts.
joespaniel Feb 09, 2002, 07:59 AM We now have Modern Armor. :mwaha:
Lost luxury trade with Russia, because they want Radio to continue. I refuse, they could research Fission if we give it to them.
Cancelled deal with Germany, too. We can live without 7 gold / turn...
Iroquois is the only nation not "furious" with us.
But who cares, in about 4 more turns, we will have a half dozen ICBMs. :nuke: :nya: :nuke:
