THE BENCH
====================

If you want to sit on the bench just reply to the thread.

If you're on the bench, please pay attention to the game so you know when you're up. Player's can have a bencher substitute for a couple turns if they know they're going to be away. Permanent players who miss 2 consecutive turns are moved to the bench and their replacement permanently takes their place. Sounds fair enough.

I'd love to play as well. I have not yet been involved in a succession game, but I've been following the ones on the board for a while now. Sounds fun!

3 should be enough to get started, we'll just fill up the last slot when they come along. Altighy then. The game has started and this is the history of the first 1000 years of the mighty Russian empire.

-----

4000 BC - The Russian people find themselves in lush grasslands with a river flowing close by. They decide to found their first city and name it Moscow. Researchers begin work on learning the secrets of Iron Working.

3950 BC - Our worker begins work on a mine in order to harness the raw materials into "stuff" and help us build "things" faster.

3900 BC - Our scout climbs a very tall mountain and sees ripe land that would be good for farming and takes note of it's location for future settlers.

3800 BC - We send the scout east in search of other civilizations.

3750 BC - A warrior group is formed at Moscow while our scout meets a scout from another tribe. Initial discussions with this tribe reveals that they belong to a tribe calling themselves the English. Talks don't go very well as their leader is unwilling to accept any decent deal for their techs. We end the talks and part our seperate ways without incident.

3700 BC - Our scout continues heading west ini search of English settlements.

3650 BC - Our scouts find a VERY nice area of land. It includes gold and spices within very close proximity. We decide this is a place we definately want to found a city.

3550 BC - The borders of Moscow expand due to our culture.

3450 BC - We meet the Phonician tribe and they teach us the ways of the warrior and we adopt their code. We then raze the village to the ground as they have no further use to us.

3400 BC - Our wise men decide to put together another scouting party. The world looks very big indeed and a new scout would be a welcome addition to our civilization (plus it worked out best turn wise, only 2 turns then a settler would fit right in place).

3300 BC - Our scout is produced and set forth into the world while a settler is started just in time for out future city growth.

3150 BC - We meet the Burgundian tribe and they are very nice to us. They teach us the ways of Ceremonial Burial, we then raze their settlement to the ground as they had nothing more to teach us.

3050 BC - A settler is formed and our current leader decides to venture out with them, leaving control of the empire in the hands of a trusted Russian.

-----

No notes, just expand this early in the game. The English are being dinks so we might want to find them so we can come up with a plan to eliminate them fast.

There is a warrior on defend near the capital. I thought this might be a good place for the first city unless you opt to go for the gold and spices right away, which isn't a bad idea.

So ends my reign...

Tales of the Rus

3000 BC – Our scouts continue to explore this wide open land, meanwhile, Moscow continues to work prepare a party of our people to go and explore this new land.

2900 BC – Our scouts continue to explore, but they find no sign of other groups of people, neither tribes or civilizations. Our only contact so far has been the uncooperative English (probably the results of eating too much kidney pie).

2800 BC – One of our scouts has noticed signs of human habitation and ventures toward the suspected group. Meanwhile back at Moscow, our group of adventures has formed and is making their way toward a fertile area to found a new settlement.

2750 BC – Our scout has discovered a tribe of people, the Vandals, and he is able to communicate with them. Over a period of time they explain to him what is in the area surrounding their camp. Glorious news, our settlers have found a new city, St. Petersburg, may the Gods protect it. We send the warrior to the area South of the new city to explore.

2630 BC – Our scouts continue to explore, and our warrior has discovered a cold, mountainous region to the South of St. Petersburg.

2590 BC – One of our scouts stumbles across a tribe of people, and their language and customs our very similar to ours. Through skillful negotiations, the scout convinces the tribe to join our civilization (i.e. settler is being sent back towards Moscow, he was discovered far away).

2550 BC – Our scouts continue to explore, the people of Moscow continue to work on building in which they can worship the great and benevolent gods that watch over our civilization.

2470 BC – A wonderful age for our group, one of our scouts made contact with a distant tribe, the Gephia's. While sitting around their campfire, he noticed them pulling objects out of the fire, imagine that. Well, upon further examination he found that they take a special kind of dirt and heat it in the fire and they get a material that they build with, our people now know this skill. Also our wise men have discovered the secret of taking a special kind of stone, heating it up till it is a liquid like water and making things from this hot liquid. It makes weapons and tools that are much harder and tougher than the bronze that we have been using. We also have word from our scouts that they discovered large deposits of this special rock, North of Moscow. I am directing the lost tribe that we have found to that area to settle.

2390 BC – Our scout has made contact with the Allemanni tribe. While in one of their buildings he noticed strange characters on animal skin, when he questioned his hosts about these characters, they said they were characters of an alphabet.

2310 BC – Our people in Moscow have a celebration to dedicate the just completed temple. As Moscow is growing again, it is decided to form another group of settlers to go out and conquer the land.

2230 BC – Our scouts discover signs of another tribe, but when they go to investigate, all they find is a group of deserted buildings (who knows, maybe 4000 years from now, Leonard Nimoy will do an "In Search Of" to find where they went).

2190 BC – It was decided that the people of St. Petersburg needed somewhere to worship the gods, so a rush order was put in for the temple. They grumbled somewhat, but the Russian serf needs a strong hand to rule them.

Well so much for my rule, just a few points. Change the worker in St. Pete from the wheat field to the mined square, unitil the mine is complete in the wheat square (we need the shields). Just my opinion, but put the settler in the plains tile, next to the wheat field and iron tiles. Its on a river, we'll have both food and production and water. Good luck.

Hey, I just wanted to point out that the first person to play the game with the new patch needs to let us know. It could mess up the game if we load a patched saved game into an unpatched game.

That is assuming of course we will be able to use the saved file after the patch.

UPDATE: Just got word from the horses mouth, we will be able to use our game after the patch. Sweet.

OK, attached is the zipped game file. We're in a bit of a mess right now as we are at war with the English and we just founded a new city right next to their border and.... well, I can't get into it right now, but I'll have full details in the morning. I would recommend that you don't start the next succession until I post tomorrow, because I have quite a few notes and suggestions to pass along to my replacement. GRRRRRR, the english will pay! :slay:

Oh yeah, I did NOT install the new patch yet...

Here we go!

2150 - The city of St. Petersburg begins construction of our first effective offensive military unit, the archer, as Czar Yokozuna I wishes adequate protection for our people. A group of warriors south of the city begins exploring towards the English borders.

2110 - Kiev is founded in the shadow of a vast mountain range somewhat to the west of our capitol city and St. Petersburg. Work on banding together a group of warriors to defend the city is begun. An additional deposit of the ore iron is discovered a ways north of the new city by one of our Russian scouts.

2070 - A group of adventurers from Moscow form together and decide to head out to found a new city. They initially head down the great river in search of fertile land.

2030 - The boundaries of another nation is spotted near the iron deposits discovered in b.c. 2110.

1990 - The culture of the magnificent city of St. Petersburg has expanded thanks to the foresight of earlier generations of Rus leaders.

1950 - Our explorers happen upon a village, but there is no sign of any inhabitants or life. The name "Anglos" is carved above the doorway of what appears to be some sort of community building. Our warriors exploring near the English have discovered two new sources of iron close to the English borders.

1910 - The nation to the Northwest of our people is found to belong to a people calling themselves the French. Our leaders make initial contact, but they have nothing of value to us. We leave them to the misery of knowing they are an inferior people.

1870 - Our scout near French borders has accidentally stumbled right next to a French city. Apparently he stumbled right over French boundaries without realizing it due to the dense jungle growth in the region. It is completely unguarded but there is nothing our scouts can do. Yokozuna I decides that this is really for the better as we are not yet geared up to become involved in a conflict with the French people.

1830 - The city of St. Petersburg creates another group of archers to help protect our nation. They are sent west to patrol the area. Yokozuna I calls for more adventurers to come together so that new Rus territories can be founded.

1790 - The Rus capitol of Moscow creates another group of Archers who are sent north of the city to explore. The settlers that were exploring down river from Moscow instead decide to journey towards the iron deposits near England so that a secondary source of the material can be secured. The Rus worker near Kiev begins construction of a road that will connect the new city with St. Petersburg.

1750 - No major events occur.

1725 - The city of Kiev has finished it's warrior unit to defend the city. A temple is immediately begun.

1700 - A barbarian is spotted near Kiev, and he is headed straight towards the city! Although the warrior unit there should have no trouble handling the threat, the acher unit north of Moscow is diverted towards the city in case the hordes are overwhelming.

1675 - The barbarian attacks Kiev, but he is bravely fended off by our warriors there who have now become veteran status. An english warrior is spotted south of the city just outside of Rus borders. Yokozuna I assumes that they are just exploring for places to found additional cities, as there has not really been much animosity between the two leaders.

1650 - Two more groups of English warriors appear south of the motherland near Kiev. Czar Yokozuna I becomes very nervous. However the possibility still exists that they are on a peaceful mission.

1625 - Civil disorder has put the city of St. Petersburg into chaos. One of the farmers is directed to entertain the violent citizens. The English scoundrels south of Kiev have the gall to set foot upon sovereign Rus soil! The little game the English were playing is over, and their intent is now clear. Yokozuna I considers having production in Kiev changed to a military unit, but it would take too many years to do any good. The warriors within the city prepare for what comes. Our scouts near French territories have discovered a tribe who call themselves the Hun. They provide us with a map of their region. The scouts have still been stumbling in and out of French territory due to the thick jungle growth. A French warrior "escort" now follows the scout around even though Joan D'Arc has been reassured of our peaceful intent and boundary misunderstandings.

1600 - The old witch Elizabeth declares war on the Rus as her unhonorable fiends march into Kiev and slaughter our warriors. They fought bravely killing some of the attacking forces, but the numbers were too much and they were overwhelmed in the end. 43 gold is stolen from our coffers, and the Czar burns with anger. All mitary forces are put on the highest state of alert, and some forces are sent down towards the group of settlers attempting to found a city near the "English" iron. A warrior in the area spots an English settler with an escort of a warrior wielding a spear. The spearman is defeated in battle and two new Rus workers are conscripted from the English settler. The Czar is overjoyed with this news, but the fires of revenge are still burning within him.

1575 - The Rus capitol of Moscow produces another group of archers who are immediately sent towards the front lines. The governer is directed to immediately begin work on another group.

1550 - Another source of iron is discovered to the north of the Russian capitol! We are surely a blessed people. The city of Minsk is founded near English borders in defiance of their evil queen. Work on an archer there is immediately begun. Many of our forces who were initially tasked with retaking Kiev have now been sent to defend Minsk. Yokozuna I reasons that our chances are greater in that regard.

1525 - Further consolidation is done around Minsk. Units defending St. Pete and Moscow are brought out of the cities to help in the war, although at least a couple of units will stay nearby for defense. (OOC: In retrospect, was this the wrong thing to do? I hope not... Is civil disorder in our future?) Czar Yokozuna I grows weary and knows that his time on this world is growing short. He finally passes on to the afterlife as a final curse for Elizabeth escapes his lips. The funeral is somber yet short as the people have the more pressing matters of war to attend to. Later that night, his specter is supposedly spotted within the Russian palace wandering the halls screaming obscenities at "the rotten English scoundrels". One aide claims to have confronted the ghost and it tells him, "I will not rest until the witch is hanged! Mark my words!"

And thus ends the story of the rule of Yokozuna I, forever to be remembered as the ruler who fell for Elizabeth's ruse.

OOC: Sorry for the war guys! I know I probably made quite a few mistakes, but I'm learning as I go along. Hopefully you'll be able to clean things up for me. Notes and suggestions will be forthcoming.

yokozuna4

Notes and suggestions from my rule:

1. I think I forgot to mention that St. Pete recently completed another settler. If I remember correctly it now sits on a spot next to a lake that looks like a decent place to found a city.

2. There is a Frenchy warrior "chasing" our scout in the northwest. The scout is east of the warrior now, so take heed not to send him back west.

3. As I mentioned in the earlier post, many of our forces are mobilizing for the war. However many of them are also still in somewhat "neutral" territory, meaning that they could be kept to guard Moscow and St. Pete, sent to try to recapture Kiev, or head down to Minsk to help defend the city and possibly be involved in campaigns within English territory. I deliberately attempted to leave all doors open in this regard.

4. Due to the new iron source that was discovered north of Moscow, Minsk does not have quite the importance I initially thought it would. However I still believe it to be a very valuable strategic location being so near the English, and I think we should do our best to defend it.

5. Of the two workers taken from the English settler, I would recommend the following: One is currently on one of the squares that contains the iron next to Minsk. Have him, of course, build a road to the iron. When it is done change Minsk production from the archer to a swordsman. Have the second worker start the road from Minsk to St. Pete in reverse, as there is already a worker building the road from the other direction. The sooner we get iron to Moscow and St. Pete, the better.

6. So far the French have not been involved at all in our war with England. Do we attempt to get them involved, or gamble that the English won't try to do the same?

7. It is unknown at this time whether or not the English have the required technology to mine iron or not. It seems somewhat strange that they attacked us like that if they couldn't see the iron. There was iron closer to them as well, further deepening the mystery, but I don't know if they had explored there yet.

8. I noticed our tech funds are set at 20%. I did not change this during my rule, becuase we were already technologically advanced. However we should seriously consider increasing this in the near future.

Well, that's all I have. Again, sorry for getting us into this predicament, but I'm quite new to the game. =) Good luck!

1500 BC: In a whirlwind display of political maneuvering, General Magicbacon ascends to the Throne. Popular with the troops, his throne was secure from the backstabbers and plotters that had ruined other Russian Emperors. Ascending to the exalted office of Emperor, Magicbacon’s first proclamation was “The Russian People will not rest until the deaths of our countrymen and the treachery of our enemies have been avenged. The foul Elizabeth shall know our wrath, this the Gods have shown me” Smolensk was founded on the river Don, and the Russian archers and warriors continue to patrol for the hated English
1475 BC: Moscow, having trained a regiment of archers, begins work on a barracks to produce veteran units. A phalanx of spears is fortified in Smolensk to defend against enemy troops. A tribal people known as the “Celts” are discovered by a scout. The Celtic people, to show their admiration for our mighty emperor, show us their mystic rites.
1425 BC: A unit of intrepid scouts, while exploring the mountains to the north of Moscow, was attacked and brutally murdered by barbarian warriors. A pathetic English archer was destroyed by our fine bowmen near Minsk. St. Petersburg, completeing its regiment of archers, also begins work on a barracks.
1375 BC: Our mystics, having discovered a device to make the transporting of goods and men much easier, begin work on a method to ride the great beasts known as horses. An archer bravely dies attacking an English warrior. The pathetic Elizabeth has contacted us with offers of Peace! The arrogance! And not only does she demand peace, but she demands 120 pieces of gold AND the secret of Iron Working! We dismiss her without delay. It is strange that she thinks she can win the war, what with her losing three warriors to one of ours in the hills near Minsk
1325 BC: Moscow has completed its barracks, and begins work on a phalanx. Smolensk finishes its workers, and begins on a temple to our gods. Our archers defeat an attacking archer from Nottingham!
1300 BC: Two regiments of archers near Minsk. Magicbacon orders them to advance to Nottingham at once to besiege the city.
1275 BC: Our siege of Nottingham continues. They have lost another two warriors to our one fortified in the forest.
1250 BC: Petersburg falls into disorder! The emperor give the citizens circuses to take their minds off of the war. On a brighter note, the English have lost yet ANOTHER archer outside of Nottingham. Emperor Magicbacon does not believe that they can sustain these casualties for long. A spearman is completed in Moscow. It remains in Moscow, to pacify the population.
1225 BC: A unit of our ferocious warrior has destroyed another archer unit trying to reinforce Nottingham. These warriors, in all, have destroyed some 7 armies of the English! Three archers have encamped outside Nottingham, and the assault is set to begin soon.
1200 BC: Our archers delay their assault on Nottingham. When the Russians have secured their source of Iron, THEN the English shall know pain.
1175 BC: Our archers have been destroyed near Nottingham. The Emperor, in a fit of lucidity, decides to call of the siege until our new “Iron Warriors” can be trained. On the bright side, the barbarian encampment that destroyed our scout has been put to the torch. There were, regrettably, no survivors.
1150 BC: Little of Note
1125 BC: A veteran spearman has fortified himself in Petersburg to pacify the people.
1100 BC: The Minsk Iron Road nears completion.
1075 BC: Our Smolensk Phalanx defeats two Barbarian invasions. A Swordsman is hurried in Minsk, to defend against archers.
1050 BC: An English Archer has defeated our attacking Archer.
1025 BC: Another Spearman is fortified in Moscow.
1000 BC: Two English Archers are screwing around near Minsk, and frightening the chickens.
975 BC: Our Minsk Phalanx defeats an English archer.
950 BC: The Great Emperor Magicbacon is in failing health, but his mind is sharp. He commands our swordsman towards Nottingham, to hopefully capture the city. However, the dying Emperor’s spirits are raised by the completion of the Minsk Iron Road. Laughing Evilly, the Emperor commands swordsmen to be trained.
Yet the Emperor’s dream of destroying the English was not to be. While dictating orders to a subordinate, Emperor Magicbacon reputedly said: “Hey! Why am I still alive? Don’t Most People die before they are 550 years old? And with that, the Emperor died of ridiculously old age.

Hmm… the war is going ok, but neither side is getting anywhere. However, with our new swordsmen, we should be able to conquer Nottingham and liberate Kiev. I needed to defend Moscow and Petersburg because they were in danger of going into civil disorder.

P.S. To my successors: Don't get anything involving Tanks. They will be no match for their Spearmen.

In 925 BC, a new Russian leader warrior was asked by his people to lead them forward into a bright future. His first order of business was to discuss with the French their strange method of record keeping and communication and they devoulged that it was a method of representive symbols each with meanings which are organized and scribed on paper for others to interpret and understand. The Russian people were very intrigued with this technique and their leader offered 150 gold coins for the technology.

Our negotiator also learned that the French had not yet established communications with the English and her thought it was better that way. If all went according to plans, no one would ever have to know the English people ever walked.

Also, in 925 BC, a new commander was appointed over the Russian armies. Upon his first inspection of the troops he witnessed that the majority of our soldiers out in the field were not properly equipped to fight a war. He immediately ordered a halt in the Russians advance into Britian until the entire army was modernized. Warriors were returned to the barracks in St. Petersburg to refit. In the town of Smolensk, the whip was cracked to complete construction of the temple there.

That is how the next era of the Russian people began, this is how it turned out:

900 BC - Citizens from Moscow and Smolensk are instructed to form frontier groups and to settle new lands in the name of mother Russia. Meanwhile, St. Petersburg is put in command of the military. Workers are sent to St. Petersburg to improve the land to favor the construction of our armies.

875 BC - The first group of warriors returns to St. Petersburg. They are equipped with armor and swords and are taught of their use. The total cost for the upgrade is 40 gold, Russia is happy to pay.

850 BC - One unit each of bowmen and spearmen assault the English city of Nottingham. The assault fails and the bowmen are wiped out in the assault. The English use the opportunity as a training exercise and walk away from the battle veterans.

825 BC - The last of our outdated warriors is equipped and trained as swordsmen. They are sent to Minsk to meet with the rest of the army before setting out to conquer the English.

800 BC - Russia's newest groups of frontiersmen (how the hell do you spell THAT word?!?) are sent east to mine iron ore discovered there. Our new leader feels its important to have multiple supplies of such a valuable resource.

775 BC - The foolhardy English armies arrive at the edge of Minsk. Russian spearmen laugh as they repel the assault with ease.

750 BC - English warriors and bowmen are seen heading deep into Russia. Our leader decides to ignore the intrusion as he trusts in the abilities in the armies guarding the heart of our empire. He sets his sites on the true prize, England.

730 BC - During a visit with lady Joan of Arc from France, we have many fruitful conversations. She tells us of a man fashoining himself as the ruler of Germany. We offer her 50 gold if she would introduce us and she agrees, thus contact with the Germans is established. During our first meating with the Germans, they are extremely rude. They offer to teach us how to tame wild horses and use them as mounts, but they wish the secret of our alphabet and an unreasonable amount of gold. We are insulted and leave the bargaining table empty-handed. Little do they know he have been studying this method of "horseback riding" ourselves and it is only a matter of time before we master the technique.

710 BC - In Moscow the whip is cracked to complete construction of a granary. Our army is finally assembled and begins the march to Nottingham. A total of 1 bowman, 1 spearman and 5 swordsmen are enroute.

690 BC - Our army is ambushed by the English on the way to Nottingham. The English are decimated by our swordsmen and one unit becomes elite.

670 BC - English forces are seen rushing to Nottingham. HAHA, they know they are doomed. Russian soldiers begin singing great songs of battle so that their enemies might hear them and fear their coming. (NOTE: I have in my notes that I traded the English 109 gold for Philosophy but that can't be right because I was at war with the English. I don't remember if it was the French or the Germans.)

650 BC - The occupation of Nottingham! Russian soldiers assault Nottingham and two units or swordsmen are lost; our archer is lost fighting English bowmen along our army's flanks. In the midst of the battle a great leader emerges...Ivan the Terrible. The Russian people rejoice and can't wait for this leader to return from the field so they might meet him.

630 BC - The English occupy the town of Minsk and Russia's sole source of iron is lost. Russian swordsmen move to retake the town permanently.

610 BC - Um, the whole country kinda sleeped and nothing happened.

590 BC - Russian forces liberate Minsk and the people are promised that they shall forever be protected from Russia's enemies. The people are happy to be a part of our fledging empire again. Travelers pass through our cities and words spreads of a group of people called the Persians and of the wonders they have created. Aparantly they have constructed great resting places to their past kings called Pyramids. Apparantly, the Persian people, not only lay their dead to rest in these Pyramids, they store food there also!!! There Persians mush be a strange people indeed.

570 BC - The lands near Minsk are cleared of all English opposition. The conquest of Nottingham is complete. The people worry that are forces are weak, though all our swordsmen are now elite fighters. St. Petersburg is giving the order to replenish our armies with fresh soldiers.

550 BC - The Eastern coastal city of of Sevastopol is founded. Citizens rejoice.

530 BC - A route is cleared and Ivan the Terrible begins his journey home to meet the Russian leader. As he makes his march he meets with the people of Russia to raise the morale of our citizens. Victory celebrations are held all over the country.

510 BC - A diplomat visits England to have a discussion with her. While the negotiations go absolutely nowhere (as Russia planned), we did learn the English have mastered a form of art they call map making. We were a little more than worried when we were showed a map of our own lands! England knows to much about us, they must be eliminated.

I would make some suggestions to my sucessor.....

If you can take those two visible Russian cities near Minsk then sue for peace and get back the iron town we founded towards the center of the map in the peace negotiations, then I think we'd have a pretty good upper hand on the English meat-heads.

Then we could focus on settling all that prime land we've mapped out.

BTW, I was wondering why someone researched horseback riding when we were not ready to build horsemen (no horses). Then a pleasant surprise. The English town of Nottingham must have been founded on horses as it can build horsemen! As soon as we link it up to the rest of the country we will have swordsmen AND horsemen. How cool is that.

Anyway, Nottingham is building a worker for just this purpose.

Other than that, I would just do the usual, conquer, SETTLE and explore.

BTW, where did our scouts go? I didn't read that they had died, I probably missed it. I think we should have at least one, they are the best thing to pop goody huts.

Take it away, we've got a good start.

Oh yeah, the reason research is at 10% is so we can make money in the beginning to trade for techs and such. Raising any higher this early in the game is counter-productive and the money we get is more valuable that the techs we can get in trade anyway. That's my take on it :)

What do you guys think would should do with the leader. Since we are not militaristic, I vote for building an army with him so we can build the heroric epic later, giving us more great leaders.

I will have the full story tomorrow, but if anyone wants to get started tonight, here is the file. We took Hastings and our army is on the outskirts of London along with a elite swordsman. We have already killed off two spearmen and the city is about to fall (I really wanted to take this city) so continue the attack. Elizabeth has already contacted us about a peace treaty but no dice, I am holding out for Kiev. I think that after we take London, we could get Kiev back for a peace treaty and some cheap tech (hint – masonry). The rest of the post will be up tomorrow.

Good job putting the pressure on London! Haha! Do you really think we should let up though? I think we are in a position to totally annihilate England. That's a big chunk of land we can claim but we gotta keep the settlers coming too before someone else starts moving in.

Also remember that this is a huge map with 16 civs so the land grab is especially important so keep the settlers coming, a war could slow us down if we let it.

I say down with England!!! The rulers of Russia have only just begun.

A Russian army led by Ivan the Terrible prepares to conquer the English capital, London.

Dec 07, 2001, 08:13 AM
And so the Arch Duke Hobbes, ascends the throne of Russia. The armies of Russia are strong, but to defeat our hated foe Elizabeth it is decided they need to be even stronger. It is decided to provide enough troops to Ivan to earn the name "Terrible" from the English.

490 BC – Smolensk builds swordsman, better-trained troops are needed for our war effort, and so a barracks is started. Nottingham, which was captured by my illustrious predecessor, has provided a source of horses; these will be used to help defeat the hated English. Travelers report that a civilization called Babylon has produced the Oracle. Elite swordsmen are given a chance to recover, Ivan is held in reserve until the time is right. Workers, and a spearmen for protection, are sent from the area around St. Pete's to Smolensk to build the road to Nottingham.

470 BC –

450 BC – Serfs in Smolensk are persuaded to hurry barracks, St. Pete produces swordsman. Found the city of Tblisi.

430 BC – Odesa, which has switched for producing a serf to a scout, completes its task. Scout is directed to go out and collect the goodies.

410 BC – Elizabeth sends an envoy, begging for peace. We demand, the return of the holy city of Kiev (it's holy because of the wheat field on the floodplain, two iron deposits and it's location on a river), she declines. English archers make moves to try and flank Smolensk, our recovered elite swordsman will soon show them the error of their ways.

390 BC – Two English archers taste the cold iron of a swords, the last words to pass their lips was a curse at Elizabeth, for failing to send spearmen with them.

370 BC – Nottingham build horsemen, can you say "pillage". Nottingham is directed to build another scout.

350 BC – Smolensk builds another swordsman. Elizabeth is sending archers towards Smolensk, our elite swordsmen send them to the great beyond, the last words to pass their lips was a curse at Elizabeth, for failing to sufficiently fund her science budget and discover iron working (Ha Ha – Nelson from Simpson's).

330 BC – Our horseman encounters an English archer, "he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day". Our spearmen defending performs bravely, dispatching and English archer who attacked Nottingham.

310 BC – Our scout who has set off North of Odessa, encounters a barbarian, and retreats. (Note: there is an encampment up there somewhere, need to send someone to clean it out).

290 BC – We now have enough units to allow Ivan to earn his name; any army is formed of three veteran swordsmen. Our two elite swordsmen will travel along with him.

270 BC – English approach Nottingham.

250 BC – English are buried in the fields of Nottingham.

230 BC – French have discovered mathematics, we ask what they want for it: World map, 120 gold and communication with the English. Let Joan know that she really does not want to talk with the English (they are terrible cooks and snooty) and would she rather have a world map and 150 gold, she did. Trade world map to Germans for world map and 50 gold. Our army lead by Ivan has experienced its first victory, on the outskirts of Hastings. Hastings captured.

210 BC - St. Pete starts Heroic Epic.

190 BC - After hearing rumors of another English settlement, our horsemen is sent to investigate.

170 BC – Discover Coventry, attack Coventry, leave Coventry.

150 BC – Elite and veteran swordsmen are sent to assist in the attack on Coventry. Our swordsman dispatch another English archer, the last words to pass their lips was a curse at Elizabeth, for failing to give them more training before they went to battle. Scout discovers the Vandal tribe, don't know if this is a good thing, but they tell him about lawyers, this could come back to haunt us.

130 BC – Our armies approach London, two swordsmen, and horsemen attack Coventry, and are defeated.

110 BC – Our army and a veteran swordsmen attack London, two spearmen are defeated, and our swordsmen is now elite.

And now I must retire, to spend the rest of my days in my dacha in the country. Our armies are strong and our treasury is full.

Hmm, maybe we should grab England and then go for Kiev with a peace treaty. This will buy us time to settle all of the land North of England before the Frenchys do. Then when we're ready we can finish off England and take their land. Sort of use them as a "place holder" for all of that land south of us. I'm going to play tonight, so give me some suggestions before I have my go. And good job on showing them who's boss! :goodjob:

I say, take London and ask for a peace treaty and get Kiev, if not, we continue the war. A long war could lead to a deficiency in settler production. No matter what, do not let Elizabeth make contact with anyone if we can help it, we need to keep her in the dark as much as possible. If we make peace, then we use the lull in hostilities to fill the area between Moscow and Kiev with cities and roads. Once this is complete, we finish off the English, lets let Elizabeth work for Holy Mother Russia for a few turns before we spank her all the way to the great beyond. :spank:

I really don't think we'd have to sacrifice a lot of settler production to go to war with the English. We have both iron and horses while I don't think the English have anything. We could steadily pound the tea-suckin' freaks with minimal forces while we spread our empire.

BUT if we can get Kiev in a peace deal then that would work also. If they don't want to give up Kiev though we'll just have to take another city to help persuade them. We could always come back and take England later after they've built us a few cities.

Yea, got busy last night. (Take that how you want) I'm downloading now and I'll do my best to play and post tonight.

I'm also going to install the patch tonight just so you know. I know we can take games saved under the original version to the patched version, but I'm not sure about going back. Everyobdy should probably go ahead and patch up regardless. (If you already haven't. I'm sure that I'm probably the last one. heh)

Ok, finally finished her up this morning.... I wish I had somewhere to post screenshots!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

90 BC - Russian forces capture London!! The battle goes very easily for the Russians who more or less walk right into the city. Elizabeth has asked for peace but will not give us back Kiev. She was threatened that we would destroy her completely if she did not comply, but she told us to "come back when we have a more credible threat". Oh, don't worry about that Elizabeth. We will... We will

30 BC - It is noticed by Yokozuna II that the road from Minsk to our precious iron is no more. We immediately dispatch troops to destroy the English rogue who caused this trouble and search for workers to repair the road.

10 BC - The Russians finally have a boat with which to explore the vast oceans. It is send on its way.

0 BC - The Russian calendar advisor approches the Czar: "Sir! It has finally happened! We have reached the end of time! People are panicking in the streets and no one knows what to expect next!!"

"What do you mean, 'the end of time'?"

"Well sir, when we first started our empire I proclaimed it the year 4000. We have been counting down the years ever since then and now it is finally the year 0!! It is the end of time and there is nothing we can do about it!"

"Fool!! Why would you ever devise such a calendar that had a known finite end! What did you EXPECT to happen when it ran down to 0?!?"

"Well sire, I... I... it didn't seem like this day would ever come! I never though..."

"Silence!! Guards remove this man from my sight and have him hanged! I proclaim that tomorrow will be 1 AD (After our moronic calendar advisor's death) From this day forth we will count FORWARDS in time so that such an 'end of time' will never occur again!"

That evening all of the people came to see the hanging of the moronic calendar advisor. The new calendar was put into effect, and the people rejoiced.

50 AD - The assault on the English city of York begins. The city is heavily defended and it's end will not be known in the time of the current ruler.

90 AD - Additional troops continue to be moved south towards the front. Our sages learn the secrets of Polytheism, and the Iriquois trade us the secrets of Literature for the price of 170 of our gold pieces. Construction of the heroic epic is changed to that of the Great Library so that our technology might flourish.

110 AD - 230 AD - War rages on

250 AD - A barbarian uprising is spotted near Tblisi. No less than 16 barbarian horsemen are headed towards the city!!

260 AD - Another uprising of barbarian hordes is spotted in the mountains near Odessa. This time 17 barbaric horsemen are on their way to seal the city's fate!! Yokozuna II sees his mistake, but there is nothing to be done for it. HAving focused all of his military forces towards the southern front the heart of the Russian homeland has been left exposed to the ravaging barbarians. He tries to revert troops back to defend the cities, but it is too late. There is not enough time. Only luck and the bravery of the Northern defenders can save us from disaster now.

280 - The first of the barbarians reaches Tblisi. The lone spearman defending the city somehow manages to defeat 12 or 13 of the savages before he is overcome. They loot close to 200 gold from our coffers.

Thus ends the rule of Yokozuna II

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Yikes. Those barbarians came out of nowhere. I had no idea that could even happen! My successor might change some of the development in the northern cities before he ends my last turn. You might be able to get a couple of more units by playing around and maybe even rush-build some walls. I don't they'll be as bad as I at first feared, we just need to get some people in some good defensive positions. Also, I STILL have not managed to restore our iron after all of that time! It is taking forever to build the road in the mountains, but it should be done soon. We need more Swordsmen!! Good luck!

Looks pretty good so far, I don't think England has much left in her. I wouldn't worry to much about the barbarians, we have enough money to take another hit and with all the settlers you built, we should be able to build up our home force pretty quickly.

Some suggestions.. If a city isn't growing anymore and they are size 3+ you should either pump out settlers or workers just so our growth doesn't get stunted.

And you might want to put some money towards happy faces, maybe 20%?

How are we doing tech-wise?

Ivan the Terrible is poised for his next great conquest, the English town of York.

magicbacon
Dec 09, 2001, 07:55 PM
Ok, just finished my turn. Quite productive, if I do say so myself. Here's my 20:

290 AD: Emperor MagicBacon ascends to the throne, winning broad support with his doctrine of "Kill the Bastards," which was far more popular than his "Kill the other people." Moscow finishes a colonist company and begins the formation of another. Troops throughout the empire are engaging the English and winning. A great number of barbarians have moved near to Odessa. Sverdolsk is founded.
300 AD: Odessa's phalanx is overwhelmed, and Odessa is sacked! Many times! successive barbarian waves loot 65,62,57,51,47,43,39,35, and 32 gold pieces! The emperor publicly wonders why so much of our treasury was held in a vulnerable frontier town... On the lighter side, the City of York was captured by Ivan the Terrible and a new governer was installed. Two thousand citizen of York were enslaved and sent back to till the fields of the fertile russian empire.
310 AD: Odessa is sacked again, losing 50 gold. The emperor is rendered speechless due to the constrant stream of expletives issuing forth from his word-hole. Also, the Japanses have built a great wall for some reason or another.
320 AD: A unit of bowmen destroys and loots a barbarian encampent in revenge for Odessa, and loots 25 gold. Archer slay a Spearman in the siege of Canterbury.
330 AD: We make contact with the Americans near Dallas. They have many more cities than us, but upon trading world maps with them we discover that half of their continent is covered with ice. \
340 AD: The Iroquois established a diplomatic embassy in Moscow. An archer slays another spearman in the siege of canterbury.
350 AD: Canterbury falls! the hated english are down to three cities. We raze the city, leaving only one survivor to carry the news of their defeat to Elizabeth. The Minsk Iron Road has also been rebuilt, allowing constructin of swordsmen to continue.
360 AD: The americans found Los Angeles south of York. Ivan the Terrible is dispatched to Kiev. Vladivostok is founded.
370 AD: Novgorod Founded.
380 AD: Not much
390 AD: Krasnoyarsk founded.
400 AD: Our troops surround Warwick. We buy construction from the germans for 340 gold.
410 AD: We destroy Warwick. We sign a treaty with the foolish English, knowing full well that we will break it shortly, in return for all their gold, a city, republic and currency, and a worker. We gain a free science, Monotheism. We can now see most of the world.
420 AD: Zulu's complete Colossus
430 AD: Nuttin
440 AD: Barbarian encampment raided for 25 gold to avenge the sacking of Odessa. Ivan the terrible has encamped outside Kiev, ready to sack the city.
450 AD: IVAN THE TERRIBLE CAPTURES KIEV! The streets run red with blood as suspected English collaborators are put to the sword. The oppressed Russian populace join in, and not an Englishman is left alive. The English have one city left, Coventry, but out Army must rest in Kiev before beginning the trek there.
460 AD: Little of nore
470 AD: A barbarian encampment is raided for 25 gold.
480 AD: As the great Emperor Magicbacon II's reign draws to a close, his final act upon the earth is to officially open the Great Library in St. Petersburg. With that, the Emperor spontaneously combusts, creating a mess that will take a long time to clean up.

Great news on the library, and nice work! It sounds as though the English scum will soon be gone from the face of the earth, and that library will help us greatly with technology since we have not yet focused our efforts in the area of science. It sounds like we're still expanding fairly well too. Hopefully the Americans don't take over where the English left off in harrassing us.

I don't have a lot of time to write this so here is a quicky.

490 AD - Endureth III steps in and takes the reigns from the current leader. He immediately changes productions throughout the empire and orders certain things be completed as quickly as possible. Many citizens are put out by his heavy hand and leave our empire. This worries the king not, so he continues speeding production throughout the empire for most of his rule.

510 AD - The spearmen stationed at Odessa continue to fend off the barbarian siege. It is expected that reinforcements are a long ways off and the king prays the veteran spearmen stationed there will be strong enough to continue defending the city.

520 AD - Spearmen in Odessa are considered elite after defending Odessa from yet ANOTHER barbarian raid. The whip is cracked through out the empire to complete various, much needed construction projects.

530 AD - Word reaches Moscow of a great project code named "hanging Gardens" is being constructed by the Babylonians.

540 AD - Migration begins. Many settlers from across the globe begin arriving on what is considered Russian land. While it hasn't technically been colonized by the Russian people it is considered theirs none-the-less. The king is displeased that past kings were so free-giving with our world map but the emotion passes after he drinks a large cup of English tea. What a fine drink, he thinks.

550 AD - Ivan the Terrible reaches the outskirts of Coventry. White flags are raised throughout the city. Ivan pays them no head and begins planning his attack on the city. Elsewhere, the Russian town of Riger is founded. The people rejoice.

560 AD - Ivan the Terrible and his army occupy Coventry. Ivan laughs at the ease of the assault and the wine flows all night long. Elsewhere, the Iroquois are seen attempting to cross our territory with the intent of founding their own cities, they are immediately asked to leave and they agree to comply.

570 AD - Bored with nothing to do for the last 10 years, the king pulls out his whip and begins cracking it all over the empire. a couple people leave but in the end the king is please with how productive his people can become with a little motivation.

580 AD - Near St. Petersburg, it is witnessed, the Iroquois attempting to sneak a settler through our lands again. Our king threatens them with war and the army leaves very quickly. We must keep an eye on our Indian neighbors.

590 AD - Ivan the Terrible once again sets his armies on the move, this time towards the newly settled english town of Warwick. An early messanger is sent ahead to instill fear into the English people. Ivan was a pretty sick fellow.

600 AD - Scholars acquire knowledge of a new government type at the Great Library. Monarchy becomes available. The king considers switching to this new form of government but the thought of putting down his whip almost brings him to tears and our nation remains a despotism.

610 AD - Near Warwick, a lone unit of archers is decimated by our forces there. Ivan the Terrible leads the assault personally. The English found a city nearby and name it Newcastle. Ivan decides to take a detour on his way to Warwick to raze this newborn settlement.

620 AD - Ivan razes Newcastle to the ground and turns his army once again towards Warwick. The English people are fearful and their extinction is innevitable.

630 AD - The last of the barbarians near Krasnoyarsk are evicted and their settlement destroyed. A group of settlers is poised to found a new Russian city there.

---------------------

That's it. I took 15 turns because there is a little more going on now. We might still be able to get away with 20 though since the war is over. Maybe it's time to become a monarchy?

We are doing pretty well but there is no way we'll be able to settle everything on OUR island. To many people have our world map and they are sending settlers from across the globe to grab a peice of OUR island.

Whoever is next, finish off the English (to easy :) ). Work quick to settle what land we can before the rest of the wolves do.

I raised our happiness to 30% because 0% just wasn't cutting it. The people are much happier now and are actually being productive.

BTW, whoever is doing all the irrigating, build mines instead. We can irrigate later once we have aqueducts. We need the shields from mines right now.

Here is the short version of what happened. We destroyed the English, but they managed to sack one of our cities before I finished them off. I was unable to rush troops to this city because of a lack of roads, I have remedied that situation. Our workers are now very adept at building roads. I have managed to link together most of our cities and have found a number of new ones. When our road network is complete, we can send the workers back to building mines. A note, since we are a scientific society we can rush build libraries at a cost of one citizen, use this benefit to establish a quick border lock, it will work faster than temples. Americans and Iroquois have been trying to cross our borders, don’t let them. The French have also had large number of swordsmen near our borders, that is why the army is in that region. Please send a settler to form a new city along the road from St. Pete to Minsk, in the mountains, I would hate to have some other Civ control that supply line. Also, we have a large stack of money, I have been trying to upgrade the spearmen to pikemen (rotate them into cities that have barracks).Good luck.
