View Full Version : New unit: Skeleton Archer (Jan 11th, 2005)
aaglo Jan 10, 2005, 04:34 PM Hello everyone!
This is an unit I was very surprised nobody has yet made (not that I know of) - a skeleton archer. AFAIK skeleton archer is one of the basic known-by-all fantasy units. So I would assume this would be useful in some fantasy mods. The headgear I took from the warhammer tombking warriors.
PARENTAL ADVISORY: he has no clothes

Xen Jan 10, 2005, 04:35 PM very nice! planning a line of the undead? if so, can we get a necromancer (and a hobgobbo settler, and worker :mischief: )
Mr. Do Jan 10, 2005, 04:56 PM Damn you aaglo, I just added in all the Chaos Dwarf units to my download of the WH mod, and was just about to start my first new game in weeks, and nowI've got t oadd this one in as well (on account of my lack of free wil).
By wich I mean: great unit, as ever!
Plotinus Jan 10, 2005, 05:05 PM I like the way he twirls his arrow! This is a skeleton archer with attitude!
tjedge1 Jan 10, 2005, 05:12 PM There is one made already, but yours is of higher quality. I'm debating wether to replace the one I'm using for this one.
Mr. Do Jan 10, 2005, 05:14 PM Well the one that already exists doesn't have east/ west direction animations, does it?
aaglo Jan 10, 2005, 05:16 PM What? Where? Is it a conversion of some sort then?
[EDIT]: I found it - it was a conversion from another game.
tjedge1 Jan 10, 2005, 05:17 PM I had never spotted that. Well that's that. I'll be using aaglo's. The one that was out there is only missing one direction. I guess that would be east.
EDIT: Don't waste your time looking for it. As mentioned, it's incomplete. Besides yours is much better.
Raw is War? Jan 10, 2005, 05:21 PM Yes, I remember there being one already, and i'm sure it was a conversion....but who's cares?
Yours is much better aaglo! :D
joeskip Jan 10, 2005, 05:27 PM this guy is realy sweet.
I like how you made him a bit more complicated with the arrow twirling and such
as good as ever
CamJH Jan 10, 2005, 05:35 PM You never cease to amaze me aaglo.
Another wonderful creation.
RRnut Jan 10, 2005, 06:11 PM Amazing!!!
Kinboat Jan 10, 2005, 07:00 PM Wonderful... and you managed to avoid the skinny bones problem that has been keeping me from animating a skeleton I made up. :D
nonnob3 Jan 10, 2005, 07:02 PM Thanks aaglo for this unit!!! Great work!!! :goodjob:
Now I can put this guy in my personal scenario:
"Beat the Mordor!" :)
(all tho I am not around here that much anymore (busy life :crazyeye: ) I still manage to find some Civ time ;) )
Take care buddy! :D
Gomurr Jan 10, 2005, 07:22 PM Nice unit, aaglo! I especially like how he falls apart during the death animation. :)
Any chance of more Tomb King units being on the way? They really are in need of a number of them.
Hrafnkell Jan 10, 2005, 08:03 PM That is one beautiful skeleton. Might be a descendent of the race of skeleton people they found in Egypt (hehe):

mrtn Jan 10, 2005, 11:03 PM This was a nice surprise! :goodjob:
Drift Jan 10, 2005, 11:20 PM Woo-hoo! No more using Kindred's Skeleton Warrior for multiple skeleton units!
Triple hurray for aaglo! Hurray, hurray, hurray!!!
How does an advanced skeleton warrior sound? Maybe a worn out breastplate, rusty shield and an axe/sword? :)
aaglo Jan 11, 2005, 12:27 AM How does an advanced skeleton warrior sound? Maybe a worn out breastplate, rusty shield and an axe/sword? :)
Well, we have the all-wonderful skeleton warrior already - and he has an axe.
I was thinking about trying to make a screaming skull catapult and a bone giant (see warhammer fantasy) for starters. We'll see if I can come up with any good ideas about that advanced warrior (I would propably make that ohe have a sword).
Drift Jan 11, 2005, 12:45 AM Anything related to this theme will be useful for me as well. :)
I forgot the skeleton warrior has a shield as well. Pretty strange as it's a very visible unit in MoM. The advanced warrior should really be something else than the axe/shield combo.
I'm not sure if you realize it yet, but making this unit was like a opening a can of wor... requests. ;) There's so many units I could use from the skeleton theme. Mostly replacements for some of the not so good graphics of some death mage units in MoM. For example, if you ever decided to make a Skeleton Mage or a Skeleton Spearman, you wouldn't find me objecting. :mischief:
Seriously, do what you want and whatever sparks your interest. :)
aaglo Jan 11, 2005, 12:55 AM Wonderful... and you managed to avoid the skinny bones problem that has been keeping me from animating a skeleton I made up. :D
Well, I'm not sure if I completely avoided the skinny bones problem. But hey, you can too - just do the thickness of the bones 'over'. Just like in all units for civ3 (IMO the limbs of the units should be overly thick because of the problem you have recognized above). I wouldn't mind if you had some skeletons in your closet. . . :mischief:
muffins Jan 11, 2005, 01:01 AM Very nice :goodjob:
Gomurr Jan 11, 2005, 01:15 AM Bone Giants and Screaming Skull Catapults sound awesome, aaglo.
As for an advanced skeleton and what not, I'd just like to humbly point out that the Tomb Kings army lacks the vast majority of its skeletal units - general skeletal swordsmen and pikemen, Tomb Guards, bone horse arches and lancers, and the skeletal chariots are all unmade. If you feel like making skeleton warriors, I would request you look there for inspiration.

Indeed :)
Of those you mention above I feel moderately confident on making these :hammer: :
- tomb guards
- swordsmen
- pikemen
I'm a bit hesitant on making these :dubious: :
- horse archers & lancers
- chariots
Why? I'm not very happy (nor confident) with my animating skills on 4-legged creatures. :crazyeye: Besides, I have issues with horses  . . . :p

But ... these are dead horses! All you would have to do is animate them laying on the ground. It would be Civ3's first ever immobile chariot unit! :)
Also, you could try ghostly horses that are semi-visible and peter-out into fully invisible at their lower regions, theyby avoiding legs altogether
skam0073 Jan 11, 2005, 03:12 AM A skeleton horse with a skeleton archer on top will be amazing..
Great unit there aaglo
tjedge1 Jan 11, 2005, 06:26 AM Any skeleton units would be awesome. I can use pretty much all of them.
Plotinus Jan 11, 2005, 06:41 AM That is one beautiful skeleton. Might be a descendent of the race of skeleton people they found in Egypt (hehe):

Love it! Proof at last!
Yoda Power Jan 11, 2005, 07:37 AM Wow  !
Snorken Jan 11, 2005, 10:08 AM Very nice unit muff... er... aaglo! :)
Steel General Jan 11, 2005, 11:30 AM You continue to amaze with your excellent work!!! :) :) :)
Portuguese Jan 17, 2005, 05:55 AM Perfect!
Major flaw, at least for you, is: Now we all hope you to make a skeleton spearman, a skeleton worker, a skeleton settler, a skeleton swordsman,... ;)
But as always, a excellent job by one who make us used of that ;)

Actually he is maknig a Skeleton Swordsman and Spearman just as we speek:p
Ivan the Kulak Jan 17, 2005, 09:36 AM Crikey, what an evil unit. :satan: Makes me think of the original Diablo, hmmm, I wonder how a Diablo mod would work in civ3? I could see a nice big continents map made of dungeon tiles, with skeleton warriors and zombies and such running about. For tech advances, let's see, mummy wrapping, flesh stripping, and demonic possession come to mind. :) aaglo is going to have to make us some goat people and pit vipers and such though.
Goldflash Jan 17, 2005, 10:41 AM I dunno, Aalgo.. it looks pretty lifeless... HAHAHA BAD JOKE! ;) :p
