View Full Version : Totally Unique Terrain pack.
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 11:41 AM OK, firstly this is NOT my work.
it is by Bane Star.
http://www.civ3files.com/civ3/Terrain/HandDrawn-Large.jpg
you can download it here (http://www.civ3files.com/cgi-bin/Civ3Files.cgi?Page=ShowContributor&Contributor=134)
Basically i love it, but it seems to have been submitted in an unfinished form. I realise it is meant to look like a handdrawn map.. but some tiles do not link, or terrain is missplaced on the tile.
Could someone please please please take this up and tweak it?
Also, currently there are no resources or conquest terrain made for it. Simply monochroming the normal game resources should fit.. but what about marshes/volcanoes?
I will get screeny to show it.
cheers everyone.
thatinkjar Jan 13, 2005, 12:14 PM That looks fantastic!
Unfortunately, I think we'll need the original author to finish it :(
Sword_Of_Geddon Jan 13, 2005, 12:35 PM Storybook World! I love it...very orginal
thatinkjar Jan 13, 2005, 12:39 PM It doesn't look so good having tried it. I mean, its cool, but I think some colour WOULD have worked better.
The borders are cool, might steal those :D
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 12:49 PM yea, its nice that it looks like a map.. but perhaps some very gentle watercolour?
thatinkjar Jan 13, 2005, 01:14 PM Yeah, I go with that solzenger. Very light, faded colouring. Just to give the terrain "definition".
But we'll need the original author really.
W.i.n.t.e.r Jan 13, 2005, 02:40 PM can u make a preview without the grid ??? should look tolkienesque...
Snorken Jan 13, 2005, 02:54 PM It looks pretty cool, but it would probably look better if it had just a little more color... :)
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 03:05 PM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/Abaddon/mapland.jpg
So how on earth would i add colour rather than re pixeling everything?

thatinkjar Jan 13, 2005, 05:00 PM What on EARTH are you doing?
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 05:25 PM im showing u all the different terrain u dolt!
citizen001 Jan 13, 2005, 05:59 PM The one by bane star is quite good, although i'm not sure if units will work well with the terrain.
thatinkjar Jan 13, 2005, 06:01 PM slozenger: Couldn't people just use one, maybe two, screenshots or, perhaps, download it?
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 06:09 PM yep, but couldnt you stop greifing every thread you get in? I want to post up the images as they are so different from other mods.. why should you care?
For example, here are all the worker actions illustrated on plains:
Takeno Jan 13, 2005, 06:18 PM I love this stuff!
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 06:22 PM im not sure if ive looked at this for too long, but it really does seem like there is the slightest colouring there... needs toning up a fair bit tho!
W.i.n.t.e.r Jan 13, 2005, 07:57 PM WOW  me likez- be it in b&w or light colouring
Abaddon Jan 13, 2005, 08:17 PM im thinking pastle colours would be best... anyone wana convert normal resources into something suitable?
onedreamer Jan 14, 2005, 08:00 AM im not sure if ive looked at this for too long, but it really does seem like there is the slightest colouring there... needs toning up a fair bit tho!
there is indeed. The most evident is water, clearly of different color from land.
Raw is War? Jan 14, 2005, 12:35 PM i love this terrain.....too much colour would spoil the feel, so if colour were to be added, then make it just a 'touch' of colour ;)
Abaddon Jan 14, 2005, 01:37 PM certainly, i am thinking a very faint watercolour? (not warpstorm style though)
thatinkjar Jan 14, 2005, 04:11 PM It needs just the faintest of colours, to help distinquish the land a little more. The art style is wonderful.
slozenger: I take it you are going to be making some improvements?
leonel Jan 14, 2005, 05:12 PM VERY cool. :D Now if only the rest of the game graphics were in this kind of hand drawn style, you'd have a winner! :D But could perhaps the coast tiles have fewer waves than the sea or ocean tiles? I figure that coastal waters would have fewer waves than the sea and the sea would have fewer waves than the ocean.
Abaddon Jan 14, 2005, 05:23 PM I figure that coastal waters would have fewer waves than the sea and the sea would have fewer waves than the ocean.
I can handle that one.
slozenger: I take it you are going to be making some improvements?
Well, i could try to sort the missmatched tiles.. but recolouring is way way beyond me!
thatinkjar Jan 14, 2005, 06:00 PM slozenger:
I think I could try recolouring the tiles. I'll give it a go tomorrow and post a sample. If you think it looks like it could work, perhaps you could sort the tiles and I'll give them a lick of paint?
DANGERBOY Jan 14, 2005, 07:33 PM Actually, waves in shallow waters are closer together but smaller, while deep water waves a large and far apart. I would keep coast and sea as is, but make ocean waves have more peaks but spaced further apart than in the sea.
The problem with the mountains and hills not hiding the grass tufts can be solved by editing the mountains and hills to either shade them or to replace the magenta background with the base background used by land tiles (ie, draw the mountains on top of grass tiles with the tufts deleted)
I like the idea of the victory point location, but I think the left-most stone should be moved a little to the right so it looks more like a circle (to me, it looks like it's supposed to be a faery circle). For craters, maybe crossed swords? That's how major battles were often shown on maps.
Great idea!
Abaddon Jan 14, 2005, 08:23 PM this is a bit rounder :) file included...
DANGERBOY Jan 14, 2005, 10:14 PM Looks nice!
Chieftess Jan 15, 2005, 06:23 AM That looks nice! :goodjob:
Abaddon Jan 15, 2005, 08:14 AM been playing around will GIMP. Have no problem turning the seas blue.. but for some reason when i try to turn the land greener, it always goes a yukky gray...im going to start a seperate thread asking about GIMP... but if anyone knows about this problem, please PM me
thatinkjar Jan 15, 2005, 09:59 AM I had to hunt for this thread just now... how did it here here?
Anyway, I had a quick go at colouring one of the screenshots you took...
Abaddon Jan 15, 2005, 10:14 AM i like, you wana try doing to the desert tiles and then loading up the file for us all?
oh it got moved because i asked. I consider this a work in progress now, rather than a finished article so it should be here.. A thread for its final release will be place back in the grafics forum...
Abaddon Jan 15, 2005, 10:17 AM Actually, could you please do the trees? im kinda halfway through playing with the sea... and therefore your coast tiles wont match up i am afraid...il have to do all the ocean/sea/coast tiles....
thatinkjar Jan 15, 2005, 12:19 PM Actually, I wish you the best, but I cannot play any part. I really don't have the time nor the inclination. I think the terrain is cool, and I like what you plan to do, but I doubt I'd ever use it myself.
I guess I just wanted to show how easily it was to colour the terrain.
Good luck, though!
CornMaster Jan 15, 2005, 12:26 PM This looks quite cool.....but you would really have to modify all of the graphics to make it match. But good work. :)
Mistfit Jan 15, 2005, 02:55 PM I have to agre that a colored version would be much neater
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/Colored_version.JPG
CornMaster Jan 15, 2005, 03:32 PM Ohhh....excellent job. :)
Abaddon Jan 15, 2005, 03:36 PM ...but you would really have to modify all of the graphics to make it match.
I know and its giving me a right headache!
Abaddon Jan 16, 2005, 05:30 PM I guess I just wanted to show how easily it was to colour the terrain.
hhaaahaa! its a hell of a lot harder to change the game files rather than a still image.
(or i am finding anyway!)
thatinkjar Jan 28, 2005, 07:41 PM Pretty true, that, sloz.
Did you make any progress?
Abaddon Jan 28, 2005, 11:41 PM nope, not donig much civ modding ATM... got two other projects under the go anyway.
