View Full Version :  Help! Problem with Pics in Art\Civilopedia\icons\units!!!
tastybrain Jan 15, 2005, 10:53 AM After adding new units and when checking Civilopedia entries for said unit in game:
Error reading file:
Missing file: art\civilopedia\icons\units\unitname lg.pcx
and then, of course, the game exits.
I've got the correctly named files (as far as I can tell) in my scenario folder (i even double placed them in the main Conquests\art\civilopedia\icons\units folder.
I can check my added civilopedia entries for all my added wonders and buildings, just can't get my unit pics to be recognized by the game. I've checked and double-checked the file names, even gone into Photoshop Pro to check the size and pixelation. all the same as normal civilopedia units pics.
PLEASE HELP!!!! ANYONE!?!
Here's an example:
My PediaIcons Text:
#ICON_PRTO_Bedouin_Raider
art\civilopedia\icons\units\x2_bedouin_raider lg.pcx
art\civilopedia\icons\units\x2_bedouin_raider sm.pcx
the file is named exactly like this in the folder. my scenario properties in the editor is directed to the correct search folder for my scenario (i know this because necessary files for buildings I've added work in the game). is there another folder i need to put the civilopedia pics in for my units????
sourboy Jan 15, 2005, 02:07 PM Well, it looks correct. Couple things you may want to try:
1) check to see if the icon file's name has a " " at the end of it. That would cause the PediaIcons entry to become "...lg .pcx"
2) rename the files so that there isn't a " " before "lg" - but maybe a "_" instead.
3) rename the entire file name to something else, then put it back. Sounds foolish, but I've seen it work.
4) it's possible your image is not the correct palette. Where did you get it from? Can you verify it works for others, if it was someone else's creation? If so, maybe redownload the file - it could be corrupt..?
Willem Jan 15, 2005, 02:09 PM You don't really need to have those icons in order for your scenario to work, they only make things look better. The game will use the graphic from the units_32.pcx instead, which looks like crap but allows you play the game.
The only thing that I can think of is that there is some sort of typo. Check very carefully to be suer the spelling is exact. Other than that, it looks fine to me.

Yes that could be it. I've had a problem before with an icon pic that wasn't quite right, the game wouldn't recognize it.

units_32 is something different. IIRC it's the same as the small pic, but it surely isn't the large.

If you want to upload your pic, I can check it out for you. That will at worst rule out one possibility, but it may solve it.
tastybrain Jan 15, 2005, 10:00 PM sourboy, thanks for the offer! the attachments below: also, i did try changing the file name (to a number of combinations: actually i had noticed the blank space before "lg" and tried the underscore, but that didn't work.)
furthermore, it's not just one file but pretty much all of the units i've tried...
anyway, if you could check out the palette and/or anything else that might be wrong/corrupted with the pic, please do. it would be much appreciated! Thanks ahead of time!
tastybrain Jan 15, 2005, 10:01 PM oh, yeah, i got the pic from the units library on this forum....
sourboy Jan 16, 2005, 01:32 AM Image is fine:

I would recheck your PediaIcons file. I'm sure you checked for spelling errors, so I would check for spaces or something. You may want to start a new PediaIcons file, cut & paste everything but this entry - then manually type it in. Sometimes a file has a minor corruption in it.
sourboy Jan 16, 2005, 01:36 AM furthermore, it's not just one file but pretty much all of the units i've tried...
Hmm, didn't catch this before.
Have you checked out Colonel Kraken's Tutorial (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=71114)?
If so, then can you list step by step what you're doing? You're missing a 'pointer' somewhere...
Willem Jan 16, 2005, 12:29 PM IIRC it's the same as the small pic, but it surely isn't the large.
No it's not, but the game will use it if there's no icon selected. It looks like crap, but it does work.
mrtn Jan 16, 2005, 06:13 PM Well, seeing as you didn't write the right name in the pediaicons I'm not surprised it crashes. Or did you rename it to "x2_bedouin_raiderlg.pcx.pcx" (missing a " " and added a .pcx) before uploading?
tastybrain Jan 17, 2005, 05:48 AM Announcing my elation and stupidity: I managed to get the civilopedia icons to work. The problem was at first I simply had the name of the pic saved wrong in my icons\units folder. After i saw the error message (for some idiotic reason) I thought I needed to actually write ".pcx" at the end of the file name. :crazyeye: God, was that stupid. anyway, i've taken them all out and they work fine now.
Here's a big THANKS to everyone for the help!!! :worship:
