View Full Version : New Unit: Meteor (23 JAN 05)
Hikaro Takayama Jan 23, 2005, 09:07 PM Well, I kinda snuck this one in on the side. Those who've played Final Fantasy VII should recognize this one right off. This is an ICBM type unit, and replaces the ICBM in my mod. Feel Free to use it for whatever you want.
UPDATE: fixed civ-coloring issues with Units_32 icon and made the attack (Falling) animation compatible with the PTW/C3C version of the ICBM in order to eliminate the metoer flying up in the air, backwards, before falling on the target.
Preview: Kiss your city good bye!

Louis XXIV Jan 23, 2005, 09:25 PM Would work well with the Dinosaur units.
Drivebymaster Jan 23, 2005, 09:37 PM AS A NUKE
but good job :goodjob:
Plotinus Jan 23, 2005, 11:03 PM Wow, very cool! What kind of technology do you need to call one of *those* things down?
Though you mean, of course, a meteorite. Meteors are specks of dust that burn up in the atmosphere. Doesn't look to me like that thing's going to burn up harmlessly.
Reno Jan 23, 2005, 11:20 PM  Good work with it, Takayama. :goodjob:
Gomurr Jan 23, 2005, 11:22 PM Interesting unit. :D That could be useful as a spell for some of the fantasy mods
Hikaro Takayama Jan 24, 2005, 01:17 AM Plontius, I mean Meteor. Meteor, In Final Fantasy VII, was a small planet (or planetoid) that was summoned to smash into the target using the secret to the Ultimate Destructive magic: The black Materia.
In my Final Fantasy mod, I've replaced "fission" with "Magitek" which allows the appearance of the Materia resource. If you have access to Materia, and were the civ that built the Temple of the Ancients (where the Black Materia was stored in FF VII), then you could build the Black Materia Great wonder, which allows all civilizations to summon Meteor (providing that they have researched summoning and have materia available). To counter this, I have a small wonder available called "White Materia" which, when built has a 75% chance of calling forth Holy to defeat Meteor (just like in Final Fantasy VII, I might add). I'll be making wonder graphics for both the Black and White materia fairly soon.
Reno, I love your avatar, and since I'm about to get back to my FF mod story, you should be delighted to know I've added a "Weapons Development Center" small wonder that allows (a) the production of Armies without leaders (so even if you have my typically rotten luck with MGl's, you can still eventually get armies) and produces a Makou Cannon every 20 turns.
tjedge1 Jan 24, 2005, 06:31 AM Very nice. I might have to add this as a sort of nuke to the D&D mod. Of course I'd call it Meteor Swarm.
aaglo Jan 24, 2005, 07:33 AM Wow!
This is pretty heavy
Hrafnkell Jan 24, 2005, 08:22 AM Very nice! A great addition for fantasy modders!

 Even better, though i have promised myself that i will only produce only one Mako Cannon, and once it's destroyed i will build another one.
Snorken Jan 24, 2005, 01:21 PM Looks good Hikaro! :)
Takeno Jan 24, 2005, 02:20 PM  Armeggeddon time!
hIdDeN_eViL Jan 24, 2005, 03:38 PM fantastic unit!!!!!
i wonder what happens if u make this the barbarians advanced unit... that would be chaos
Plotinus Jan 24, 2005, 05:50 PM Plontius, I mean Meteor. Meteor, In Final Fantasy VII, was a small planet (or planetoid) that was summoned to smash into the target using the secret to the Ultimate Destructive magic: The black Materia.
Then I stand very much corrected!
WildWeazel Jan 25, 2005, 06:47 PM To counter this, I have a small wonder available called "White Materia" which, when built has a 75% chance of calling forth Holy to defeat Meteor (just like in Final Fantasy VII, I might add).
How did you pull that off?
Great animation :goodjob:
Hikaro Takayama Jan 26, 2005, 01:17 AM Simple: I just re-named the "SDI Defense" small wonder to "the White Materia" :D The SDI has either a 50 or 75% chance of stopping an ICBM (and since all I really did was change the graphics, name and resource requirements for the ICBM, then anything affecting ICBM class units should affect this).
WildWeazel Jan 26, 2005, 01:19 PM Oh ok, I thought you meant producing a "holy" unit that could defeat the meteor :crazyeye:
Conquest Jan 26, 2005, 02:58 PM Nice. I can use this for my mod :nuke:
oagersnap Jan 28, 2005, 10:26 AM This could be used for a fantasy mod with humans fighting against dinosaurs, trying to survive long enough to get a tech that enables this weapon... That would be nice.
Vegeta22122 Mar 10, 2005, 11:17 AM great unit i will put this in my mod, along with the 4 ff leaders i donloded from your post(very cool too). :king:
Nesh Jun 22, 2005, 04:22 PM Keep working on the FF mod VII is my fav FF game and i even have emulators off the old ones.
tjedge1 Jun 23, 2005, 06:47 AM Since this thread was bumped, I have to say that this unit looks amazing in game. A work of destructive art.
Lord Malbeth Oct 28, 2006, 04:46 PM Sorry to bump this thread, but whenever I fire this baby off it shoots up into the sky with the flames/streak going up. It looks really weird. How can I fix this.
Hikaro Takayama Oct 29, 2006, 12:14 AM Not sure... I admit that I've never seen that in any of the playtests for the FF mod, but then again, I was looking at the target area, not the launch site.... I patterned the animations off the original ICBM, so it should work like the original ICBM.... Although it would seem that they made an "Updated" version for C3C.... In that version, it has 42 frames for the attack animation (which is bigger, vertically, than a unit FLC should be), the first 22 of which are the missile going up.... I'm going to try and create a new attack flic for the meteor that mimics this set-up, only with the first 22 frames blank, and the normal falling frames padded out to 20 somehow and see if that solves the problem for you.
EDIT: Actually, I just opened the PTW ICBM trail.flc (the launch and fall), and it appears that, unlike the original ICBMfall.flc, It has TWO directions, rather than 1. The SW direction would be the launch, and the S direction would be the fall.... Unfortunately, due to the wierd size of the file, I could not manipulate and re-export the new ICBM flc at the current Meteor fall size, and then just insert blank frames for the SW direction and leave the current MeteorFall.flc in the S direction.... As it is, I don't think ANY of the FLIC editors can make FLCs with only two directions from scratch, so It would appear to be unfixable.... Unless I could make a full-8direction animation in FLICster and just hope the game will only use the first two directions....
Here's my attempt to work around the problem... please tell me if it works:
Heretic_Cata Oct 29, 2006, 03:09 AM It's good that people still bump old units since when i wasn't on the forum. :goodjob:
Very nice unit/spell Hikaro
Blue Monkey Oct 29, 2006, 03:17 AM :goodjob: A fairly legitimate bump too, since it asks an intelligent question of a still active member, and got a quick response to boot. :goodjob: to you both.
It helped me discover a unit that I didn't even know to look for, that now I can think about finding a use for.
Keroro Oct 29, 2006, 03:38 PM :gripe: When I saw this I thought it was going to be the Meteor unit from Gundam Seed, until I saw the thread date. But it's pretty cool nonetheless. There's nothing wrong with bumps when they turn up quality stuff I haven't seen before. :)
Hikaro Takayama Oct 29, 2006, 04:20 PM Anyone test the updated animation in the game yet? I'd really like to know if it works, but unfortunately, due to my main computer (the one with Civ III) being tied up with unit renders, I can't test it myself.....
Lord Malbeth Oct 29, 2006, 04:39 PM It works perfectly. Thanks. :D
Hikaro Takayama Oct 29, 2006, 04:45 PM Okay, then I'll update the animations in the FF mod, fix the units_32 icon (which, IIRC in the old version, attached here, still has civ-colored splotches on it), delete the attachments on this thread and upload the fixed version to the units database and link it in the first post.
Glad you caught this before I released the FF mod, since I never thought to check the launch site during my playtests... only the target area, and I must say it looked beautiful.... You see the Meteor screaming down towards the doomed city, then BOOM! big fireball and lots of death and destruction.
Lord Malbeth Oct 30, 2006, 12:21 PM I agree. :D
DragonBird Nov 02, 2006, 08:50 PM Reminds me of the game Age of Mythology... The God Power: Meteor!
Ahh... I see it now. People learning to fly.
