View Full Version : World Wonder movies
Totibbs Jan 24, 2005, 06:44 PM When Civ3 came out, I was a bit disappointed in the wonders. You only get a flash, instead of that nice movie from civ2.
What do you think?
In Civ2 it was a good reward imho.
But for Civ3 they said that it was too much off-topic-the-game. or something like that...
I want new Wonder movies in Civ4. You too?
sir_schwick Jan 24, 2005, 07:08 PM The biggest reason against movies is resources required. According to Soren, Warpstorm, Sirian, and the other gurus, it takes more resources/time/money than one would think. I think all of us would prefer those resource put into making Civ 4 as good as it possibly can be on release.
However, it would be cool if they allowed you use movies instead of flash screens, as in moddeable. That way dedicated Civvers could make their own videos and then use them.
Aks K Jan 25, 2005, 06:29 AM I really dont care about movies. The developers should rather focus on the main game and bugfixing. The grafical side is constantly improveing, so a few years after the release the movies look out of date and generally people only watch the movies a few times anyway.
When thinking of civ2 - It makes no difference for me if there are wonder movies. And I cant even remember them atm, but its also some while since I have played it.

This sounds like a nice feature. Personally I dont want to spend time on modding, but surely others might.

Ivan the Kulak Jan 25, 2005, 08:50 AM That's a good idea, sir schwick, have them build in by default a box that displays a few BMPs while playing a wonder mp3, with the bmp files to load, time to display, fade effects and time mp3 should play all specified in an ini file, or else thru Python. But, they could also allow a movie wondow, accessible thru moddable code, where modding movie makers could play their own videos. I bet if they did that, before too long someone would have a whole library of quality videos for the original wonders up somewhere. If they were kept short, and made out of scanning stills and historical footage like the vids in Civ2, I don't think they would be that hard to make.
sealman Jan 25, 2005, 09:55 AM Peronsally, I never saw the point in teh wonder movies. Sure they were nice the first time through, but after that, it just took up valuable playing time (for every minute I watched those movies, that was another minute I could have been using to crush the AI)
Drakan Jan 25, 2005, 09:57 AM Dear Totibbs,
I think you should read post seven, number 13 of the following thread: :D

brinko Jan 25, 2005, 12:42 PM i agree. if the resources could be used somewhere in the actual foundation of the game as to opposed to some movie, i say go with the foundation
sir_schwick Jan 25, 2005, 01:32 PM but you also agree that you should be able to edit in movies for those dedicated enough to make them

as long as it does not take too much resources to put it together, it is no skin of my nose if people wanted to make their own wonder movies.
CIVPhilzilla Jan 26, 2005, 06:14 PM I do like the movies, and if it wouldn't take anything else out of the game I'd like to see them back in.
Darwin420 Jan 27, 2005, 02:05 PM The movies were a neat side-addition. If I wasn't crunched for time playing civ2, I'd watch the movies, coz they were neat, and gave me a breather in between massive campaigns against my enemies. But, I could click through them and not watch 'em if I didn't want to.
Bring back the advisors, too!
alva848 Jan 28, 2005, 06:39 AM They wouldn't all have to be included at the same time the game is released, they could release one say every forthnight after it came out. :)
I definitely want them in.
Lief Ericson Jan 28, 2005, 07:28 PM I'd rather have Civ2 style advisors than wonder movies. Regardless, wonder movies do make the game cooler.
fe3333au Feb 01, 2005, 12:05 PM I agree, have the movies and advisors ...
But also have the option to 'turn them off' to speed up play
