I have never installed a mod or faces. How do I do this so that I do not ruin the game? How do I go back to the way the game was originally?
It would be great if someone would walk me through this.

At the moment some of the option in the game is hard coded. Meaning you can't point the program to a certain file as it must use a fixed file.
So, it really depends on what mod are you talking about here. I will try to take you through a few of them :
1) changing of rules. This involve the rules file Civ3mod.bic. Technically speaking a scenario should have a diff name like scenario.bic. However, the tech tree screen get mess up if the program read the rile and realise its not Civ3mod.bic. So what you need to do is backup your original Civ3mod.bic and then overwrite it with the new scenario.bic you downloaded from the forum.
2) Change of looks. These are pretty simple. You download either a pcx file or a flc file to replace what you are having. So same thing apply, backup the original copy then overwrite with the new ones. Faces are one of them. At the moment you cannot direct the program to say CivA's leader file please read from file x. Meaning the german Civ will always read from the BS_xxx.flc file no matter what name you change the german Civ to. So what people have done is replacing one of the current Civ with the one they want and replace the face file with new one at the same time.
3) Adding units. This is slightly more complicated if the original poster did not include a new units_32.pcx file. But even if the poster did its still tricky as you cannot simply overwrite the file (hopefully Gramphos will come up with a version of Civ3CopyTool to make this easier:D ). Some of the units' icon changes with era such as Leaders, Army, workers and settlers. The original units_32.pcx file put all the era icons after all the unit icons. Say you have 65 units (the original number without adding any new units) then the era icons starts from icon 65(icon number starts with 0 not 1) to 72 (3 for Leaders, 3 for Army and 1 each for workers and settlers). Now, when you add a new unit, the total unit become 66 and the program assume that your era icons starts from icon 66 now even if you are using an original icon to represent your new unit. So without a new units_32.pcx file your era icon get mess up big time when come to later stage like industrial era. So you say, no problem, the poster includes a new units_32.pcx with his new unit. Well, you are fine for the time being until you want to download another new unit. Now the new poster will not know what unit you have already added so the most he can do is to post his version of units_32.pcx file. But you can't just use this to overwrite the one you have now because now you have 67 units and era icon suppose to start from icon 67. Now you have a problem as the era icon still starts from 66 no matter which units_32.pcx file you are using. The only way to solve this is to use a program like Photoshop that reads pcx file and edit and move those icons in the file yourself. I found this out the hard way when I was doing my own mod :p (Thanks again Gramphos!!:D )
I hope the above walkthrough is good enough to teach you how to install a mod. If you have any further question, post them again and I will try to help where I can.:king:
