View Full Version : Harp Gun UU for Canada
brinko Jan 29, 2005, 01:55 PM if canada gets to be in civ 4, i motion that its unique unit be that of the Harp Gun. Since it was invented by a canadian, and is by far the most unique weapon in its class, it would make an excellent unit for the canadians.

Canada's artillery piece makes Hitlers Gustav look like a whistle.

Warman17 Jan 29, 2005, 01:59 PM The Iraqi supercannon would have been larger. Therefore Babylon should get a supercannon >_>
brinko Jan 29, 2005, 02:00 PM harp was first.plus bull, a canadian scientist, help saddam build it, then isreali spies assasinated bull in 1990. plus babylon already has a unique unit...i forget what it is though...
Loppan Torkel Jan 29, 2005, 05:45 PM Lol, I thought it was somekind of greenpeace stuff against Canada shooting whales...
MCHunter Jan 29, 2005, 06:30 PM I wouldn't **** around with canada if I had to face one of those things. What would it replace and what would the stats be ?

It would replace every other offensive unit there is, and it's stats would be impossible to convey with simple concepts like numbers
Cool gun though. Looks like it could add interestingly to the artillery side of things.
Warman17 Jan 29, 2005, 07:24 PM Yet the entire point of the gun was to shoot satellites into space. hmmm
Lief Ericson Jan 29, 2005, 07:58 PM Wow...my respect of the Canadian military just quadrupled...

its a big gun. it shoots things. it makes a loud boom. any nation could build something like that if they felt like it.
snipelfritz Jan 29, 2005, 08:30 PM its a big gun. it shoots things. it makes a loud boom.
Good enough for me.

Zero times anything is still zero :D . Big gun, but what was it intended to be used for....? Keeping the Greenlanders in line?
Xerol Jan 29, 2005, 10:06 PM Give it 0 movement points, airliftable, 28 Bombard, 8 Range, 4 RoF. (Is it possible to have 0(28).0.0 Unit?) Replaces Artillery.

Yeah, I know...but still... :p
Shaihulud Jan 30, 2005, 02:25 AM Its impossible to airlift somthing that big! maybe it can only be transportable by rails?
brinko Jan 30, 2005, 02:12 PM since it is a stationary gun...i would say they are to be constructed by workers outside of cities...where ever they are constructed is where they shall stay...in this case the stats should be
movement....0
bombard......15
range..........20 (even though it is said a projectile missle launched, could go around the world)
or have a transportable harp gun (using rails)
make it so the harp gun cannot move on anything but rails.
movement....0 (only on rails)
bombard......15
range..........6-8 (ordinary artillery is 2)
i think the transportable harp would be the most realistic case for civ 4. one of the downsides to having this, is one cannot transport them across the seas. they have to be used on the same land that they are built.
this would be an great modern UU for canada...
GoodGame Jan 30, 2005, 02:46 PM What size shells does it fire?
Considering the Paris Gun, of Germany----it'd probably be scary for a few bombardments is all---excepting Nuclear shells.
brinko Jan 30, 2005, 03:11 PM i dont think it would matter in the game what size of shell...unless civ 4 has ammunition as a concept.
GoodGame Jan 30, 2005, 03:39 PM It'd matter as a consequence of destructivness. That's why Battleships do more damage than Ironclads.
Colonel Jan 30, 2005, 03:42 PM Its not nice to make fun of Canada by saying it has a military. O wait this isnt a joke!!!! Now I understand why the Canadians dont have any military buget they waste it on a bunch of these around their borders.
GoodGame Jan 30, 2005, 03:46 PM Some commentary from the 'net on the Paris Gun (WWI grand-daddy of big guns):
The Paris gun was used to shell Paris at a range of 75 miles.
A total of 320-367 shells were fired, killing 250 people and wounding 620, as well as causing considerable damage to property.
The gun itself, which weighed 256 tons and was mounted on rails, had a 28-m-long, 210-mm-caliber rifled barrel with a 6-m-long smoothbore extension.
94kg Shell thrown 130Km
The gun was taken back to Germany in August 1918 as Allied advances threatened its security.
brinko Jan 31, 2005, 10:16 AM Everytime the canadians were asked to do something in history, we did it. now its time for team canada to have her break. we are not worried about the "what ifs" or "how to" when it comes to war. we have proved so many times before what our great land is capable of. A true victor only has to fight 1 battle before he is noted for being the true victor. we have fought many battles that we did not want. now we can respectfully choose the ones we do. i am truly not embarrased about living in a country where its ferry fleet outnumbers it navy. simply because we have the best country in the world. everyone knows it and so likely, everyone is jealous. when the day comes and the skies turn red, it will be soley our will to once again ride into battle glorious and proud.

sir_schwick Jan 31, 2005, 10:47 AM In general I think a RR Artillery weapon would be a good idea. They were very popular in both WW because of mobility(relative) and caliber.
