And remember: If you're only going away for a day or two, chances are that no-one cares, and there's not much point in spamming... err... 'posting' it here.

Because Ainwood says we need one, duh! ;). He also changed the title; the old one probably grated on him for months until he couldn't take it anymore.

Alright - nix the spamming.

Long threads can cause forum performance problems, and 1000+ posts is long enough.

For those who say "See ya tomorrow" you may be right as I will continue to post just at an average of .1 a day or something like that ;)

I am posting this from work.

Due to technical difficulties I will not be posting here for a while - not until I buy a new computer which may be months or longer. Don't break the place while I am gone.

I will be back (perhaps to the dismay of some).

Welcome to OT. This is where you get the non civ advice. If you go to the other fora here, you can get excellent civ advice. I recommend the game of the month. OT is all about other stuff.

Hello,

You could technically say that I am new to this forum because I just registered a month ago, but I discovered this site almost a year and a half ago, and have been regularly browsing the threads since. I will try to put a mini FAQ here about myself as some other posters have done.

General Info I am 14, and a freshman in a New York High School.

Political Views My political views are not yet cemented in stone, so I would consider myself pretty open to new ideas. I am definitely on the left side of the political spectrum, which could be anywhere from commie to moderate democrat. I am also decidedly anti-bush. I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but a large number of my views on issues that I don't know a lot about come from reading CFC threads.

Interests/Hobbies Music, sports (baseball, fencing), computer games (mainly strategy), and books (generally fantasy, occasional historical fiction or political).

Civilization Status I got Civ II when I was about 8, and thought it was fun, but didn't really get it. Then I recieved Civ III when it came out, and have been hooked ever since. Whenever I think I am finished with Civ, I will play other games for a few months but eventually return. I now have both expansions to Civ III. I currently play on emperor/demigod.

I might update this post later if I feel there is something I need to tell you. ;)

Oh, it's bad. Very, very bad.

I was just waiting for someone to say that.

Still, we have a pretty good representation of people from all over the world with many different positions. I don't simply accept anyone's opinion as fact, but try to stay open to all sides of the argument. I find it preferable to combine some of these ideas into my own opinion then to just listen to what some pundits on TV have to say.

I just started grad school research with one of my professors, so I'd become very busy. Starting next Monday I may no longer be able to post here on CFC anymore. It's not that I think OT sucks now (because somewhere in the crap, there's always something good), and it's not because I don't like you (though I probably don't), it's a matter of time (and the fact that I don't want to be still here when I'm 18). So Good bye everybody.

BTW, every advice I've given on CFC is a bad advice, so if you've taken anything I said seriously, sucks to you. Good bye

I won't be on CFC as much from now on (previously most of my free time! ) as in the few months i've been here (forsy few i never posted, middle few my PC was broke) i've suffered the following syptoms:

1) Loss of REAL social skills (i used to be good at talking, now i fid i hard to string a sentnece together! No joke!)

2) I don't see my mates anywhere near enough (pre-CFC once every 1/2 day(s), post-CFC once a month :()

3) Loss of memory- i tend to lose my memory far too quickly, i can't remember what i did yesterday without hard though and its hard to recall this morning!

4) I'm becoming dumb, i used to be A*/A/B, now i'm B-D :(

5) I'm too lax on school work "Oh i'll leave that coursework until i've been on CFC" 5 hours later "Lets forget my work and go to bed..."

6) I'm lazy around the house now, i used to help out, now i just sit at my PC on CFC...

7) Myh brain has mushed

9) My eyesight is decreasing even more rapidly

10) Gaining weight, back problems etc from constant sitting in wrong position...

If you see me on CFC often (eg. for more than an hour a night, i come on every night etc) please PM me and tell me to go away as i feel i am "needed" by you guys and if i don't post on CFC i will miss something important and i might be needed (which is obviously wrong).

Well goodbye (sorta anyway), i'll miss my "virtual friends", i hope i still have some real ones

I'm gonna be away for a while. Something really weird happened to my computer and apparently it cant be fixed (WTF???). I was uninstalling Pirates! and I heard a weird sound from my hard drive, and then my sygate firewall crashed, drWatson32 started running at 100% of cpu process, and then all my network devices stopped working. I had a tech come to my house and he had no idea of what was going on after spending 2 hours trying different stuff.

So I'll have to buy a new one when I get bak to Montreal  So much for my vacations in Jamaica  Bah, anyway I needed a new one to be able to play the upcoming Civilization 4....

So I probably wont be back until 3-4 weeks.

Have fun.

@MODS: you should update the link in the OT notice board thread, it stills refer to the old Arriving/leaving thread.

Mar 11, 2005, 12:21 PM
Well since I never gave myself a formal introduction when I joined the forum like a year ago, here goes:

Who Am I? I am a freshman at Mandeville High School and I am fourteen years old. I live in a town called Mandeville in Louisiana. I am a quarterback for our highschool football team (and will possibly be second string next season).

My Interests I like to program computers with C++, play my guitars (one's a Fender Stratocaster), sit around and listen to classic rock, and sometimes play CivIII. Oh yeah, and of course, hang around here!

My Political Party 'Association' Republican. No Bush hater or republican hater here could possibly sway my political views. I have one thing to say: we do not need a Democrat president at this time. And also my dad would be extremely pissed if he found that I was a democrat.

My Favorite Bands/Types of Music are as follows (and are mostly classic rock): Pink Floyd, Van Halen (not really classic rock, but hard rock), The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, and Blue Oyster Cult. Some non-classic rock bands that I like: Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, and The Pretenders. Any type of rock past, let's see, 1988, sucks. All punk, alternative, and emo sucks. Rap completely sucks no matter what time period it was from. Ragtime music (especially Scott Joplin) is pretty good.

Favorite Food: Well since I mostly eat the crap they give us at school (which the quality happens to be deteriorating right before my eyes), and we don't get to eat out very often, I would have to pick the school's pizza as my favorite food.

Favorite Drink: Powerade or Coke (I think I'm seriously addicted to caffeine :( )

Favorite Movie: Pink Floyd The Wall

Favorite Song: Money by Pink Floyd

Well, that's the real homeyg.

Hi all,

I'm arriving and leaving, and leaving and arriving.. this is a true story:

I went south to see family for Christmas (December) and stayed longer than anticipated. Fate (or God - I am Christian) moved me around a few hundred miles, and deposited me in Southwark, London. I arrived with a briefcase of clothes, and some money... but no bankcards, or proof of ID.

I didn't think, or I thought too much... but anyway, when I called home I discovered all my stuff (including PC, ID, &c.) had been put into storage! *Seriously!*

So here I am. Does that seem right to you? Definately weird. I had some plans, but they have all been scuppered by unforseen circumstances.

Lots of weird stories. Seen loads of people from my past (from all over the world) in London, which is also kind of freaky since none (except one) had any connection to London when I knew them. Is the world shrinking?

In a way, I'm still not back from Christmas holiday

What horrifies me the most is the cost of property in London. I could have a lovely four bedroom detached house with a pool in sunny Florida, for the same price as a single-room studio flat in London! Wtf? Well, I'm off to Sainsbury's now... Later!

Though it is only a statement and nothing you can live by, a 1 br in Mpls, for example, will only set you back $475/ month and you still get to live amongst the peoples of the world. No, seriously though, say no to London, Paris, NYC, etc; those places are traps, they will suck all the life from you and take all of your money, you can find nirvana in your own mind at a much lower rate away from the presumed cockpits of "hip" and "sophisticated discourse"!

Experience is what makes a life whole. I applaud your choice to get some in the real world and not via the internet. Unless you have taken up Zen, clearing your head won't solve the problem. When you are confused you are learning. You are a seeker and time will bring order to your mind. Your departure is our loss. "Live wisely, Love ferociously." :)

I am overcome with a desire to throw out a few things that have occupied my life for the last year. I am struck by the reality that many things, this place included, are nothing more than obstacles which occupy one's time and provide petty mental distraction. My head must be cleared; I will return when it is clear and it has room for a place like this.
Well you're probably too long gone to get this, but I'm sad to see you go. There aren't a whole lot of people around here I consider to be both like-minded and possessed of a mind, and I'll be rather lonely all by myself on one side of most issues without you.
I certainly understand your reasoning, though. There was a point at which I was making around 10 posts a day; that's just a huge waste of time. I tried to quit entirely, but settled for just cutting back.
Odd how similar CFC is to heroin.

A nice little ribbon and $75. :)
What was your project about?

WillJ
Apr 03, 2005, 02:44 PM
What was your project about? Here's my abstract:

In this project, I sought to find out if gender is relevant to the decision making process involved in contributions to the public good. To test this, I recruited three classes of high school students. In the experiment, I told the participants that each was being given $2.50 to start the test. Each person could decide how much of this money he/she would like to keep and how much he/she would like to contribute to the group. Any money contributed to the group would be doubled and then distributed among everyone in the group equally.

The nature of this experiment is such that it is in the self-interest of each participant to keep all of his/her money, but in the interests of the group as a whole for everyone to contribute all of their money. The experiment is thus an illustration of the tragedy of the commons, a collective version of the prisoner’s dilemma. This experiment seeks to find out how gender is related to this phenomenon, and to find out if standard economic theory or sociological theories taking into account altruism and social norms are true.

In my experiment females contributed an average of $1.42, males $1.00. I was thus able to confirm my hypothesis with 92% confidence: females on average contribute more than males to the public good when faced with a situation resembling the tragedy of the commons. Social norms seem to offset standard economic theory, and some traditional gender differences remain to this day.

[Important details left out of the abstract for length considerations were that the people couldn't communicate with each other, no money was given until it was calculated how much each person finally deserved (thus there was no issue of people not giving money out of the fear of not getting back their fair share), and there were two groups---one of 27 people and one of 22---and they were all told they were in a group of 30 people.]

Tomorrow, I'll probably be running away again, retreating ever so deeply into my mind again. submersing conscious thought until everything becomes a blur; everything becomes an arm's length away.

When? Today, tomorrow, all throughout the day. When does it cease or stop? Never. I can't keep my guard up all day, and it would probably be better for me to descend into it.

I can ascend to pure happiness, the reflecitve touch of a pure childhood memory, and just as quickly freeze up whenever I encounter a bad one. There's more bad now than actual good ones.

Don't worry, I'll be back here tomorrow (if I remember). And the next day. And the next day...

Probably most of you don't care, but if you read something different - a different emotion, different psyche, even maybe different personality altogether - it is because I descended too deeply and didn't return all in one piece; rather, returned in shards of glass...

Yep, absolutely knackered! :D

Wedding was great, I went all mushy during the exchanging of the vows and struggled to get my words out as I had tears running down my face. Everything was fine, although the best man's speach was a little close to the bone.

Honeymoon. Flew to Nice, cab to Monte Carlo. Cruised around the Med taking in Livorno, Portovenere, Valencia, the Spanish Islands and up to Barcelona. The cruise was rather luxurious, fantastic food and drink, pleasent people on board the boat. A real mix of people, mainly Americans. We did not socialise that much, (its a honeymmon thing). I was surprised to see that although all the drinks were flowing all day and every day, (they were free, be it beer, champagne, cocktails etc) not once do I see anyone who was drunk; now there is a refreshing change.

In the last few months, I've been eating junk food and playing a video game. Now I'm sick of it, so I've resolved to do better, which means I will be coming here during my computer time to benefit from some discussion. Stay tuned for the moment in which I burn out of trying to work hard and end up eating junk food and playing video games again.

I have been hanging around, loitering you might say :), on these forums for a while and have only discovered this thread recently. That's largely because I've only discovered the unbridled joys of the OT forum in the last month. I'll simply follow the format that others have laid down. If you want to ask me other questions I'll happily answer any PMs. Here we go:

Who Am I? I am two 27 year old guys. One refuses to grow up and the other keeps surprising the immature one with notions of middle agedom  ! This does not mean I am schizophrenic btw :). I live in Hertfordshire, a county/state directly north of London. I work in corporate finance in a family firm, securing equity and debt financing for medium corproates in about 12 different countries. I've been doing this for 2 years now and prior to that I was producing TV commercials, music promos and other film related things in London. I have two degrees: 1 in fine art photography (absolutely no practical use at all  ) and a second in Film Production (Producing) - only slightly more helpfu! I got fed up of the incessant drinking and debauchery in London 2 years ago and have run away to the countryside - much nicer here :).

My Interests: I DJ once a month down in London and this largely came about because I developed a severe vinyl (record) habit from a young age. I cannot stop buying records. These are mainly funk, jazz, latin jazz, hip-hop, reggae - all of which I DJ. I used to write radio plays for the BBC in my spare time but things like Civ have put an end to that. I play for a village cricket team and it breaks my heart that I am nowhere near as good as I used to be, but I play anyway. I used to be a very useful rugby player (flyhalf) until my hip was dislocated at the age of 16 in a match. I couldnt play contact sports for 2 years and never went back to it. I like good beer - particularly Belgian beer . I prefer good grass :groucho:. Civ - obviously. Reading fiction, history, current affairs mags and poetry. Photography and all those other things that you just put down under interests.

My Politics: Is always developing and changing with my circumstances. I am still trying to come to terms whether this makes me fickle, practical or only just interested enough to engage with the process in an informed way. I used to be a raging lefty but have tempered that now. I'm a bit more into credible parties. I believe in really free trade, making poverty history, cultural inclusion, immigration and all that kind of jazz. I don't see myself as a 'political individual' though and I take a more spiritual / holistic view of life in general.

My Religion: I was raised a Catholic but don't really have one now. I am, I suppose, a 'humanist' but that fails to do it. I see myself more as spiritual than religious and the fact that I can't define my religion is part of it's worth to me. I view the world in highly mystical terms largely derived from Hindu and Buddhist thinking. I believe the basic tenet of 'do unto others as you would have done unto you' is a universally sound one that I cite when asked this.

Favorite Food: Anything edible does it for me :D . Turkish food is particularly popular right now but I enjoy cooking many cuisines.

Favorite Drink: (Soft) Vimto or Ice Tea. (Hard) Laphroaig - a single malt whiskey, Rum and Ginger, Vodka Martini (with as many olives as I can get out of the bargirl :groucho: ).

Favorite Movie: Either Dr Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick with Peter Sellers) or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (not the one they are about to release).

Favorite Song: With such a gross music habit it is impossible to answer. It's usually some funk track at any given time.

Well that's me. :hatsoff:

A combination of factors including increased schedule demands, imminent carpal tunnel syndrome due to the demands of my job, the threat of depression, and a desire to substitute real interaction for virtual, is causing me to minimise my online activities and commitments.

I am not leaving for good, as some of the discussions here are too interesting, and some of the people too smart, to completely ignore. I will probably still drop in occasionally, and maybe at some point in the future I will again take up more active involvement. For the moment, I become a visitor.

Especial thanks to Birdjaguar, Keirador, Plotinus, Akka, Yom, punkbass2000, The Last Conformist, and Mise, and doubtless some others, for consistently enlightening and entertaining me. Even in a virtual and anonymous space, your words do have meaning and considerable impact.

A fine list of intelligent posters you assembled there, I am honored to be put in such company. I feel both special and sad. As you must know, you're a favorite poster of mine, too. In fact, I would not be posting on OT at all had your thread about God's free not will pulled me into a weeks-long theological debate. Good luck with the carpal tunnel syndrome. I won't wish you good luck finding a deeper satisfaction, as I am confident you won't need it: you have been supplied the tools of intellect and morals, and you have developed the drive and talent to use them to achieve that which you undertake. Luck is a crutch on which you have no need to lean.

He loved it. It was perfect for him. It's small and has a caring environment where students don't get lost and do have real opportunities to get to know a superb faculty. The student mix is very diverse and the girls are all really smart. My son never really had any girlfriends in HS, but he had two "serious" ones at Swarthmore and the last is on going. The academic program is exceptional in both humanities and sciences. My son took advantage of the honors option and selected two majors. If you want a close knit environment over a large university, you can't go wrong with Swarthmore. If you have otehr questions, you can pm me.

"Uhh... huh... huhuh.... huhuhuh..... you're hot.... huhuhuh"

As always, I will be perfectly honest: I initially suspected you to be a spotty Brazilian homosexual desperate for attention What's wrong with Brazilians? That's a blatant troll and flame. Quite frankly, I'm shocked and appauled that you should think that you should single out Brazilians as stereotypically homosexual. The French are far gayer.

@Taleisin: I make a point of not looking at this thread, but since I did, thank you listing me with those clever people, and I hope you have lots of laughs, and that your busy schedule doesn't stress you out too much :)

Also, since I'm here.... I'm back after a long (long long long long) weekend of no computer. I broke my computer Friday morning, then I tried to figure out what was wrong with it, so I put the dodgy power supply into my housemate's computer, which broke (went *pfffff* and started smoking). So yeah I back now, £38 out of pocket, and I'm never posting in a religious thread again, because they make me sad :(
