View Full Version : The Twelve Clans of Ethiopia
Hooray Feb 02, 2005, 08:00 PM So named because I ended up with exactly 12 native-built cities.
I recently began playing the Rise and Rule mod, and I'm very excited about it. I just finished up one game with it, and have started a new one. I figured, hey I'll use one of those unique RAR civs like Ethiopia, and while I'm at it I'll do a little story and put it on CFC just for the heck of it. So here goes.
----------------------------------
The dawn of civilization. Mankind has just begun to become aware of their consciousness, and have begun to organize into unique and structured societies. One such society was the Tribe of Ethiopia, and their leader was Chieftain Hooray, a wise and powerful man. The great Chieftain once led his people atop a hill that overlooked a river to the North, fields of grain to the East, and forests full of wild Game to the South. He declared that his people could not hope to find any more perfect place to live than this, so he ordered a city built on that hill. That city was called Aksum.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/Eth_4000bc.JPG
It came to pass that Chieftain Hooray desired to know the lay of the land, so he sent out scouting parties who were to travel to all corners of the world and bring back news of what they found. Many of them never came back because they had been killed by hostile foreigners. However, here and there, Hooray's scout met friendly people who wisely chose to pay homage to the great Ethiopia.
There was the Bantu tribe which taught the Ethiopians much knowledge about how to build boats to float on water.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/Eth_3575bc.JPG
And then there was the Harrapan tribe who showed the Ethiopians how to use those boats properly.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/Eth_3550bc.JPG
Eventually the scouts found a tribe that was more than just a tiny disorganized village. This tribe was organized in much the same way that Ethiopia was, and they called themselves the Japanese. The Japanese would not simply give away their knowledge, but they were open to a trade. So, Chieftain Hooray traveled to Japan's city of Kyoto and met with Chieftain Tokugawa. There they decided that Japan would teach Ethiopia the ways of war, while Ethiopia taught Japan the ways of building.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads8/Eth_MeetTokugawabc.JPG
This meeting took place in 3500 BC, 500 years after the founding of Aksum.
There followed a period of peace that lasted for a few of centuries. However, eventually some of the population of Aksum decided they wished to strike out on their own and live independently from the rule of Chieftain Hooray. Hooray wisely allowed them to leave and form a semi-independent clan of their own, but only if they swore eternal allegiance to Aksum and Ethiopia. Those who wished to do so left in the year 3375.
For a full century, this new clan wandered in the northern mountains, looking for a place to live. Eventually they found a fertile grassland on the coast of the northern sea next to the mouth of the River Aksum. They settled there and called themselves Matara. This was the beginning of the Second Clan of Ethiopia.
Not long after the founding of Matara, the last of Hooray's scouts returned to Aksum with knowledge of the land. Chieftain Hooray enjoyed listening to the scouts' stories of the land. However, it eventually became clear from the scouts' information that the land was completely surrounded by water. Ethiopia and Japan were isolated on an island.

-------------------------------
And that ends the first part of the game.
I want to give an individual persona to each chieftain of each of the clans. However, I don't know jack about Ethiopian names. So, the first eleven people to reply to this thread get to be eleven of the twelve chieftains of Ethiopia!
rbis4rbb Feb 02, 2005, 09:44 PM Really cool story... I wonder whats going to happen to Japan...
spacedragonblue Feb 02, 2005, 10:10 PM Query- I have RAR as well, but I have the original terrain graphics. What did you do to get the ones you have?
miRageR Feb 02, 2005, 10:28 PM Hmm.. 12 clans. heheh. nice story.
Hikaro Takayama Feb 03, 2005, 03:06 AM Long Live Ethiopia!! Good story, so far, BTW :)
Hooray Feb 03, 2005, 05:24 AM Query- I have RAR as well, but I have the original terrain graphics. What did you do to get the ones you have?
I pasted Snoopy's Terrain into the Civ3 Art/Terrain folder and copied them over top of the original Civ3 Terrain files. Of course, beforehand I made backup copies of the original terrain files in another folder.
The same can be done with any Terrain mod.
Billy Yank Feb 03, 2005, 01:03 PM And that ends the first part of the game.

Hooray Feb 04, 2005, 12:10 PM -------------------------
After the Clan Matara left Aksum, the population of Ethiopia continued to grow. Eventually more people desired to leave and form new clans as well. Chieftain Hooray allowed them to leave peacefully, but only on condition that they agreed to remain eternally allied to Aksum.
In later history, this era was referred to as the Age of Expansion, or the Age of Division. Here follows an account of the division of the Ethiopian peoples.
The third clan, Zeila, left Aksum in 2900 BC and settled on a peninsula to the East.
The fourth clan, Adulis, left Aksum in 2425 BC and settled on the Western coast.
The fifth clan, Samidi, left Aksum in 2175 BC and settled at the edge of the Northern Tundra.
The sixth clan, Gabaza, left Aksum in 1940 BC and settled on a lake in the East.
The seventh clan, Sabat, left Aksum in 1800 BC and settled on a river to the South, near wild herds of Elephants and Horses.
The founding of Sabat claimed the last of the land in the fertile areas of the North. In such fertile areas, the seven original clans grew and thrived, thus they eventually became known as the Seven Major Clans in later times. The rest of the clans were forced to settle in the great Southern Plains.
The eighth clan, Qohayto, left Aksum in 1640 BC and settled on the Northeastern edge of the Southern Plains.
At the same time, the ninth clan Koloe, in a unique circumstance, left Matara and settled on the Northwestern edge of the Southern Plains.
The tenth clan, Tekondo, left Aksum in 1380 BC and traveled far and settled on the Southern edge of the Southern Plains near the border with Japan.
The eleventh clan, Zala-Bet-Makada, left Aksum in 1320 BC and settled in the central region of the Southern Plains.
The twelfth and final clan, Ham, left Aksum in 1120 BC and settled on the western coast of the Southern Plains.
The five clans of the Southern Plains were considerably weaker and less prosperous than the Seven Major Clans of the north. Thus the five southern clans became known as the Five Minor Clans.
All of the clans together became the Twelve Clans of Ethiopia, with the Clan Aksum as the political and cultural center.
After the foundation of Ham, there was no more room for new clans to settle. Also, Chieftain Hooray, growing tired of the continual divisions, proclaimed that no new clans could declare independence and migrate elsewhere. He also proclaimed that if any new lands were ever to be discovered or conquered, then they would only be placed under the direct control of the existing Twelve Clans.
A map of Ethiopia that was created around the time of the formation of Clan Ham survives to this day:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1120bc.JPG
After the Age of Division ended, Ethiopia enjoyed several centuries of peace and prosperity. Shrines to Ethiopian deities were built in every town. Roads were constructed that connected all the clans together. And new luxuries like Sugar were discovered that increased the quality of life.
However, there was turmoil and unrest by 550 BC. The chieftains of the various clans became lax in their duties, and allowed corruption and crime to run rampant. Production and trade slowed to a halt. Only Chieftain Hooray of Aksum remained vigilant. He felt a great sadness at seeing mighty Ethiopia fall into such decay. He formed a great army and consolidated his power in Aksum. He then declared the eleven other chieftains to be subservient to himself. In this way, Hooray became the King of Ethiopia.
However, there was rioting among the peasants, and the Eleven Chieftains were not so willing to relinquish their power. To compromise, King Hooray returned some power to the Eleven Chieftains after they swore to become more vigilant in their duties. Soon, under the wise direction of King Hooray, Ethiopia grew to greater prosperity than it had enjoyed in the old days.
It came to pass in 400 BC that tensions grew between Ethiopia and their southern neighbor Japan. King Hooray saw that Japan was the only other nation in the entire known world, and came up with an idea. He decided to destroy Japan and ensure that Ethiopia would forever afterwards be free of foreign threats. He called together the Eleven Chieftains and asked them to help him raise an army to crush Japan.
Soon, the forces of all Ethiopia gathered in the lands of Tekondo and marched south toward the Japanese capitol of Kyoto...

Notes: Sorry that this one lacked details of any sort. The problem is that pretty much nothing interesting happened in this period except for the revolt to Monarchy.
Next time - the war with Japan!

Yes, King Hooray is a truely wise leader. ;)
Another update will be forthcoming shortly.
Hooray Feb 04, 2005, 03:30 PM -------------------
The war began well with a decisive victory at Kyoto. The Japanese tribal guards were tough and well trained, but they could not match the mighty archers of Ethiopia.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_Kyoto.JPG
Shortly afterwards the city of Edo was also captured. However, the Japanese began pushing back with their powerful Chariots. The generals of the army made the decision to find the Japanese source of Horses and destroy it so that Japan could not make any more chariots. The Japanese horses were apparently bred and raised at the city of Kagoshima, so the army headed there. Kagoshima was much more heavily defended than the previous cities, and the Ethiopian forces captured it only after taking heavy losses. The generals decided to fortify their gains and wait for reinforcements before attacking further.
Meanwhile, back in the heartland of Ethiopia, Clan Aksum and Clan Matara had begun two great building projects to glorify their cities. Matara had decided to build a great statue, called Colossus, in its harbor. It was completed in 120 BC.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_Colossus.JPG
Aksum had decided to construct a great temple called The Oracle which would supposedly allow them to glimpse the future. It was completed in 40 BC.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_Oracle.JPG
With these great projects completed, Ethiopia could focus on the war again. Reinforcements gathered in Kyoto for one final push.
Osaka fell swiftly. Soon after, the army headed to Nagoya, and encountered considerable resistance there. The Ethiopians were victorious, but they had suffered many losses and the city was also destroyed from the intensity of the battle.
After Nagoya, the Ethiopian forces were fatigued and unwilling to fight further. So, in the momentous year of 1 AD, King Hooray of Ethiopia signed a peace treaty with King Tokugawa of Japan, thus ending the war. Also at this time the calendar was changed to commemorate the end of the great war.
Due to King Hooray's decree from the end of the Age of Division, each of the captured Japanese cities were to be placed under the direct control of one of the existing Twelve Clans. King Hooray divided the captured territory in this manner:
Kyoto would be controlled by Clan Aksum.
Kagoshima would be controlled by Clan Matara.
Edo would be controlled by Clan Samidi.
Osaka would be controlled by Clan Adulis.
Nagoya, once it was rebuilt, would be controlled by Clan Zeila.
The clans that had been left out protested, but King Hooray ignored their demands.
By 90 AD Nagoya had been restored. A map from that time shows the complete Kingdom of Ethiopia:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_90ad.JPG
-----------------
Notes: In hindsight, I should have finished off the Japanese. But, at the time I was getting tired of the war and figured I would finish the job later. In the end I don't think it made a whole of difference, really.
rbis4rbb Feb 04, 2005, 06:10 PM So have you finished the game and just started writing it up? Or whats the deal with
In the end it doesnt really matter.
Hooray Feb 04, 2005, 07:08 PM I'm still in the process of playing the game, actually. I'm in the later parts of the Middle Ages (researching Absolutism, actually).
Actually, I take back what I said. If I *had* destroyed Japan, I wouldn't have been able to trigger my Golden Age in the second war with the Ethiopian UU (Javelineer). It ended up mattering a bit more than I initially said. I just wasn't thinking when I wrote that.
fantasmo Feb 05, 2005, 05:49 AM I likes it.
Hooray Feb 05, 2005, 07:29 AM -----------------
The years following the war were turbulent ones, rather than the eternal peace which King Hooray had envisaged.
The victorious Ethiopian army returned home thankful that the war had ended, but many of the population were dissatisfied that Japan had not been destroyed utterly - after all, had that not been the entire purpose of the war? There was much grumbling among the peasants that the King did not know what he was doing.
More significantly, the clans that had gained nothing from the war became angry at the King. They had sent many of their young men to fight and die like all the other clans, but in the end received no reward. The Five Minor Clans banded together with the two Major Clans of Sabat and Gabaza to voice their dissent.
Tensions grew, and a civil war between North and South seemed more likely with every passing year.
A civil war was avoided, however, when all of the Eleven Chieftains banded together to oppose King Hooray. The Northern clans saw an opportunity to take advantage of the Southern clans' wrath to undermine the power of King Hooray.
In 170 AD, propaganda spread by the chieftains incited the people of Aksum to riot. Soon afterwards, the chieftains marched their armies to Aksum to force King Hooray to abdicate.
Seeing that he had lost control, King Hooray voluntarily stepped down from the throne and negotiated with the chieftains and the people. The Eleven Chieftains wanted to form a new government called Republic which would put all of the power in the hands of a council of chieftains. The people, however, the intellectuals in particular, demanded a different system called Democracy where all citizens would decide government policy.
King Hooray wisely foiled the plans of the chieftains by negotiating with the general population instead. A Democracy would be formed with each clan having a council of citizens deciding local matters. The demands of the Eleven Chieftains could not be ignored, however, so a Council of Chieftains was formed to decide national matters. Hooray, as the former king, reserved the power to veto any laws in this council.
The former King Hooray was now known as Chieftain Hooray once again since he was now merely the representative of Aksum.
And so the Ethiopian Democracy was formed. There were some years of instability immediately afterwards, but soon enough the country was more prosperous than it had ever been.
It was even so prosperous that in the year 320 AD the Japanese village of Izumo decided to secede from the crumbling Japan and join the prosperous Ethiopian nation. They were welcomed gladly. However, a power struggle erupted between several clans over who had the right to control the new town, and the matter was left unsettled for many years.
The Council of Chieftains saw the secession of Izumo as a sign of Japan's weakness. In 360 AD, the Council voted unanimously to declare war on Japan and destroy what was left of their only rival in the world.
An army was raised quickly, containing mainly the same Archer and Spearman troops used in the first war, but here and there among the army were a few new battalions of Javelineers and Swordsmen.
The army marched south to subjugate Japan.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_360ad.JPG
The initial battles took place against some Japanese archers in the Satsuma river valley. Ethopia's great victory there sparked off a Golden Age for the Ethiopian Democracy.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_370ad.JPG
The war progressed quickly from there with Satsuma and Tokyo falling immediately. However, the Japanese had apparently gathered all of their forces at Nara for one big last stand. The Ethiopian army marched south to Nara in 450 AD. The two great armies clashed there, and the immense battle was later remembered in folklore as having shaken the very earth in its intensity. Casualties were massive on both sides. But, the battle eventually turned in favor of Ethiopia, and the last of Japan's army was driven into the sea. Ethiopia had defeated Japan utterly.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_450ad.JPG
Control of the captured territories was distributed in this manner by the Council:
Clan Sabat would control Satsuma.
Clan Gabaza would control Nara.
Clan Koloe would control Tokyo.
Clan Zala-Bet-Makada would control Izumo.
Once again, the clans which had received nothing protested. But they were such a minority now that little attention was paid to them.
Here is a map of the full Ethiopian Democracy from immediately after the end of the war:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_460ad.JPG
--------------------
Notes: Actually, it turns out it was a good idea not to destroy Japan the first time. I would never have been able to trigger my GA with the Javelineer UU.
And I'm being perfectly serious about the battle at Nara. I had a huge army, but most of my units died attacking the seemingly endless supply of Spearmen they had. I almost didn't take the city at all.
Next time - Ethiopia is now alone in the world....or is it?
rbis4rbb Feb 05, 2005, 10:53 AM Where can I d/l the mod? And how long does it take to load?
Hooray Feb 05, 2005, 12:48 PM You ought to be able to find Rise and Rule pretty easily over in the Completed Modpacks subforum of the Creation and Customization forum here.
The download could take a while if you're on dial-up. It's over 100mb if I remember correctly.

Do I need to download special picture/text files to add to the mod?
Hooray Feb 06, 2005, 06:26 AM All the icons and such should be included in the download.
The only "extras" you need are some of the extra units that came with PTW. If you bought and installed the original Play The World expansion, then there's no problem. Otherwise, you'll need to find and download those too.
Hooray Feb 06, 2005, 03:08 PM ------------------
The period immediately following the destruction of Japan was a time of celebration. Ethiopia now ruled the entire world, and there would never again be anymore wars or strife. The Council of Chieftains declared the beginning of the Age of Enduring Peace, a never-ending era of prosperity and peace.
The population took to great projects of building, trade, and education. Schools and markets flourished in every town. And, in the year 540 AD, Clan Aksum constructed a great temple dedicated to the new era:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_540ad.JPG
Soon enough, Ethiopia entered a distinctly new era:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_570ad.JPG
In 670 AD, Clan Aksum built another monument dedicated to commemorating the everlasting peace of Ethiopia:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_670ad.JPG
As new ideas flourished in the schools and universities, some began to question if Ethiopia was truly the only land in the world. After all, no one truly knew what lay beyond the great Ocean. Some claimed that the world simply ended after a few hundred miles, but most were not satisfied with this theory.
Around 750 AD, about 300 years after the Age of Enduring Peace began, technological advancements made possible the construction of a ship that was theoretically capable of crossing the Ocean. So, the Council ordered the creation of such a ship and sent it to the East.
However, this ship was never heard from again. The disappointment throughout Ethiopia was so profound that it brought an end to the Golden Age which had lasted for over 300 years.
Most gave up on the idea of crossing the Ocean, declaring it to be impossible. However, Chieftain Hooray of Aksum and Chieftain Menelik of Matara never gave up hope. In 780 AD, they ordered the construction of a new ship, and named it the Voyage of Discovery for it alone would discover the secrets of the seas.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_780ad.JPG
The Voyage of Discovery headed East and followed the route of the original ship.
Soon, in 800 AD, the ship returned to Ethiopian with exciting news that it had discovered an island! It was cold and lifeless, but the discovery was exciting nonetheless. The island was thus named Cold Island. The Council sent some colonists to occupy Cold Island, and put the new colony under the control of Clan Ham
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_880ad.JPG
The Voyage of Discovery continued its mission further to the East. In the year 840 AD, it came across another landmass, but this one was very different from Cold Island. This land was fertile, and there were even some signs of civilization....
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_830ad.JPG
--------------------------------
Notes: Well there was a long period of basically nothing for a while. But the Golden Age helped me climb my way up the tech tree until Longships were available, which are the first ships in RAR capable of crossing the Ocean. Unfortunately they can still sink in Ocean tiles, though.
The end of the GA coincided with the sinking of the first Longship, so I figured people were disappointed by it. By the way, the GA seems to be much longer in RAR.
greekguy Feb 11, 2005, 04:42 PM could you please post again. i really like your story and i think your idea with the 12 clans is awesome. GOod luck and GoOd story. :goodjob:
Hooray Feb 11, 2005, 05:57 PM Do not worry, I will continue the story. I have just been very busy lately.
rbis4rbb Feb 11, 2005, 09:34 PM Great update.
Hooray Feb 13, 2005, 06:09 PM ---------------
The news spread quickly. Many Ethiopians were at first indifferent, and some skeptical enough to say it wasn't true at all. But, before long, the whole nation was shouting with excitement, wonder, and even a little fear that a whole other world had been discovered beyond the Ocean!
In the year 840 AD, Chief Hooray of Aksum himself traveled to the West to meet with Xerxes, the king of the Western World. When he returned, he announced to all of Ethiopia that they were now friends and trading partners with the Kingdom of Persia.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_840ad.JPG
Thus began the Age of Exploration. The Voyage of Discovery and other ships were sent to explore and map as much of the Western World as possible.
It soon became apparent that the Kingdom of Persia did not rule over all of the West. To the south of Persia, the Voyage of Discovery encountered the French, who were an inferior nation, but possessed a few technologies that Ethiopia was willing to purchase.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_860ad.JPG
Much farther to the south is discovered the Russians who are a mighty nation and are even nearly equals with the great Ethiopia in terms of technology and power!
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_890ad.JPG
Chieftain Hooray traveled to Russia and established diplomacy with their queen, Catherine. However, shocking news awaited him upon his return to Aksum. The Ethiopian ambassadors to Persia delivered the news that the Persians had utterly destroyed the nation of France! Apparently the Western World was a continent of turmoil and conflict, unlike the eternally peaceful Ethiopia.
Coincidentally, this was also at the same time that the first ambassadors from the nation of Siam arrived in Ethiopia. The Siamese lived to the West of Persia. They expressed no surprise at the news of France's destruction since they were well aware of their neighbor's aggression.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_900ad.JPG
The year 1000 AD arrived, marking the beginning of a new millenium, but also marking the end of an era. The journey of the Voyage of Discovery came to an end in this year when all of the Western World's coasts had been mapped. The ship returned to Clan Matara where it was decomissioned and placed in a museum which commemorated the Age of Exploration.
Here is a map from 1000 AD showing the known world of the time.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1000ad.JPG
A new age was beginning in Ethiopia. One of scientific achievement. This scientific era was sparked off by the emergence of two of the greatest geniuses in all the history of Ethiopia: Tekla Hymanot, and Zaki Sherif.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_TwoSGLad.JPG
These two geniuses worked together and established Ethiopia's greatest scientific institutions in Aksum: Leonardo's Workshop, and Copernicus' Observatory. With their research, they also invented a new type of ship that would far exceed the legendary Voyage of Discovery.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1100WondersLad.JPG
A man named Magellan was put in charge of this new ship, and sent on a new voyage of exploration. This time, however, they would explore to the East. After all, if there was a Western World, then perhaps there was also an Eastern World.
In the year 1120 AD, Magellan's ship did indeed discover a new continent to the East.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1120ad.JPG
Diplomatic relations were quickly established with the nations of the Eastern World. In rapid succession, Ethiopia discovered the nations of India, Egypt, Inca, England, Ottoman, and Germany.
It was about the same time that Ethiopia perfected its map-making technology, and thus was able to obtain accurate maps of every nation it had met. In the year 1150 AD, The Council in Aksum unveiled the first full map of the entire world, and the people were amazed at how vast the world was. Ethiopia seemed but a meager speck dwarfed by the wide seas and massive continents of the Eastern and Western Worlds.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1150ad.JPG
-----------------
Notes: Some nice, peaceful, builder turns for the most part. However, it was quite refreshing to have something *new* happen after so many centuries of being isolated.
Getting one SGL seems like a miracle. Getting TWO one after the other is almost incomprehensible. After Leonardo's completed normally in Aksum, I used the leaders to rush Cop's and Magellan's in Aksum and Matara respectively.
I'm always very impatient to get to Map Making (or Navigation in normal Civ3) so I can see the whole world. I usually feel better once that black stuff is gone and there's no mystery about the foreign lands. However....Egypt is freaking HUGE, and I'm just a little intimidated seeing it....
EDIT: I just now realized that I completely mixed up my references to East and West. I have now fixed this.
rbis4rbb Feb 14, 2005, 09:41 PM Whewre are the Inca?
Hooray Feb 15, 2005, 06:34 AM The Inca are the darker yellow between England and Egypt. The problem is that their color looks too similar to Egypt's.
Hooray Feb 15, 2005, 12:07 PM Just in case anyone gets confused by the Eastern/Western World thing, since on the minimap both continents are to the West of Ethiopia, I've altered a minimap to show the world as the Ethiopians would have seen it.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_Map1150ad.JPG
Note that the other continents are actually right next to each other, but I had to alter it like this because I didn't like having parts of the continents jutting out from the sides of the map. It looks cleaner this way, but it's less accurate.
stachnie Feb 16, 2005, 05:50 AM Nice story. What is the difficulty level?
BTW: I downloaded R&R some month ago and I have become a big fan of this mod :)
Best regards,
Slawomir Stachniewicz.
Hooray Feb 16, 2005, 06:39 AM It is Monarch level. I probably should have mentioned that at the start.
I will try to have another update soon.
Hooray Feb 16, 2005, 07:29 AM ------------
Ethiopia had just discovered the Eastern World, but unlike the discovery of the Western World, there was no sense of excitement like before. Instead, the Ethiopians felt only trepidation and fear. The Eastern World was dominated by the massive Egyptian Empire which was nearly twice the size of Ethiopia.
Egypt was a very aggressive and powerful nation. In the year 1200 AD, Chieftain Hooray received news that the Ottoman Kingdom had been utterly destroyed by the unstoppable Egyptian military.
War proved to be a constant presence in the Eastern World. In 1220 AD, the Republic of India declared war on Egypt. Apparently they had been close allies with the Ottomans and hoped to avenge them. Ethiopia could only watch helplessly as Egypt retaliated and slowly overran all of India. After more than a century of warfare, India lost its final battle in 1355 AD and suffered the same fate as the Ottomans.

Chieftain Hooray looked upon Egypt and was filled with anger and fear. The Egyptian Empire conquered and oppressed every nation that it encountered. It would be only a matter of time before they controlled their entire continent. What would Egypt do after that? Surely, Hooray decided, Egypt would look to conquer Ethiopia as well.
In the Council, Chieftain Hooray tried to convince the other Chieftains that it was necessary to strengthen Ethiopia's military and invade Egypt before it was too late. The Chieftains ignored him, however. Ethiopia had been at peace for over 900 years; why should they now disrupt the eternal tranquility of their nation? The Chieftains claimed that Egypt would be satisfied with its own continent, and that Ethiopia would never be under any threat.
Hooray saw that there was no convinving the Eleven Chieftains. Undoubtedly they would continue to delude themselves even as Egyptian soldiers marched onto Ethiopian shores. Hooray resolved not to let that happen.
In 1380 AD, Hooray declared his intention to take back his position as King of Ethiopia. The Eleven Chieftains would not stand for this. They gathered their armies and declared war upon Chieftain Hooray and his Clan of Aksum. A five-year civil war resulted. Aksum was the most powerful clan and was eventually able to subdue the other clans. However, with some diplomacy, Chieftain Hooray negotiated the surrender of several clans without the need for violence.
In 1385 AD, with the civil war settled, King Hooray reascended to his throne in Aksum. The Council building was restored to its status as the Royal Palace once again. The Council itself was dissolved, and the Chieftains were reduced to governing their individual clans once again.
With all obstacles out of his way, King Hooray began building up Ethiopia's military for the eventual war wtih Egypt.
However, for many years it seemed that Egypt had given up its aggressive expansion. King Hooray decided not to rush to war and waited to see what Egypt would do before he took any action.
The peace did not last very long after all. In 1440 AD, Egypt declared war on its neighbor, the Inca. King Hooray saw an opportunity and hoped to invade Egypt while it was distracted with its war against Inca. Ethiopia's military was not yet ready, so King Hooray held back for a little while longer.
King Hooray's prediction was proven right in the year 1465 AD when Egypt, not satisfied with oppressing the Incans, declared war upon Ethiopia.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1465ad.JPG
King Hooray immediately sent his armies to attack Egypt. He knew that Ethiopia's forces were not large enough to subjugate Egypt, but the invasion could not be delayed at this point. Hopefully Egypt was preoccupied with Inca enough that Ethiopia's army could deal a serious defeat to the Egyptian Empire.
King Hooray also sent his ambassadors to England and convinced them to declare war on Egypt, since they would undoubtedly be next if the Inca were defeated.
In the year 1495 AD, Ethiopia's fleet arrived off the coast of Egypt. The army began its invasion just outside of the Egyptian capitol of Thebes. After a fierce battle, the city was captured.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1500ad.JPG
The Egyptian government retreated inland towards Memphis.
Acting swiftly, the Ethiopian army moved north and captured Heliopolis with its legendary Great Lighthouse.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1515ad.JPG
Egypt could not ignore Ethiopia's invasion any more. They ended their aggression against the Inca, and focused all of their attention on regaining Thebes and Heliopolis. The Egyptian armies were massive and well organized. It became impossible for Ethiopia's army to make any further advances. Instead, they were barely able to hold on to the few gains they had made so far.
In 1530 AD, some unfortunate news reached King Hooray. England had been utterly destroyed by Egypt. The war had completely backfired. Egypt had not been subjugated. Egypt had not even been weakened. In fact, Egypt was now more powerful than it had ever been.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1530ad.JPG
The army made one last desperate attempt to capture the Egyptian government at Memphis, but the attack failed miserably. The army retreated to Thebes and fortified there, waiting for the inexorable Egyptian forces to come after them.
In 1535 AD, King Hooray decided that the Egyptian War was no longer sustainable. He sent envoys to Memphis and managed to negotiate a peace treaty with the Egyptian Empire.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1535ad.JPG
The war had ended in failure, and King Hooray was filled with shame. But he knew that the war had been the right thing to do. Egypt needed to be stopped! But, perhaps he and Ethiopia were simply incapable of such an incredible task...

dnassman Feb 16, 2005, 04:47 PM Really enjoying this. Keep going.
:)civ2 Feb 16, 2005, 07:08 PM I like this story alot, hopefully through diplomacy you can destroy those acursed Egiptians with the help of the Western Continent's inhabitants! Or maybe you could beat them with lots of artillery? Whatever happens good story!
stachnie Feb 18, 2005, 06:09 AM As far as I understand, you and Egypt are in late Middle Ages and you rule the seas. If so, it is very far from Trenchers who are the first troops with Def. 5 - it means that their cities are vulnerable to attack. I guess Egypt is in Republic or other pop-rush government - it would mean that probably they have tons of cash.
Under these assumptions, you need 6 types of units:
- a nice bunch of Colonial Marines (they come with Flintlock), their attack is 6; if you far from it, you must wait until you discover Flintlock
- a nice fleet of offensive warships to support amphibious troops (preferably Corvettes and also some Sloops-O-War because of their enslavement ability, you will need Naval Cannon)
- some artillery (Cannons, Bombards are also fine; if you have anything else - upgrade)
- some cavalry
- some defensive troops (even Pikemen will do)
- some transport ships (Galleons), but you may have enough of them already.
First of all, I would get rid of captured cities - e.g. switch to a pop-rushing government (Religious trait rocks!), pop-rush some units until they have size of 1 (after that you may switch to previous govt) and give them e.g. to Incans. Egypt will retake them soon but apart from their Wonders they will be rather useless.
Part one: diversionary attack. Move your invasion fleet next to one-two small, low-culture towns (to avoid culture flips), preferably surrounded by Forests, Jungle, Hills or so (to slow down counterattacks). After your peace treaty expires, redeclare war and bribe other civs to do the same. In the first turn of the war start naval bombardments, then amphibious attack and after you take the cities unload defenders, artillery and cavalry and rush barracks ASAP (and Harbors, if necessary). Probably Egyptians will throw anything they will have to retake the cities but you should be able to contain them, they should be good MGL farms.
Part two: not only seas should be yours but also coasts. If you see any coastal city without any Great Wonder: warships bombard, Marines take and raze. If it has a Great Wonder: take, sell everything and give to Incans (I hate razing wonders!). Repeat until Egypt doesn't have any usable coastal cities, it should bring you a lot of money and some MGL's. You may devote some warships to pillage their coastal improvements, especially on resources.
Part three: if you feel Egypt is weak enough, you may start a land offensive.
Warning: I am also a Monarch player and I am not absolutely sure it will work (but it should!). However, in my last game (as China) I have produced some amphibious troops and definitely it was not a waste, even at some point I had to cease using them because I did not want my enemies (Persians) to get too weak :crazyeye: If you cannot wait until Colonial Marines, you may skip this part and make a slow land invasion.
Best regards,
Slawomir Stachniewicz.
Hooray Feb 18, 2005, 07:23 AM Thanks for the response. I'm actually in the late industrial age as of now. I've fought several wars with Egypt already. Some successful, some not. I've devised a strategy that may win more definitively the next time (for one thing, I need to use more artillery). I may take your advice on the amphibious troops, though. However, I've basically put my game on hold until this story catches up to it.
I hope to have another update later today
Hooray Feb 18, 2005, 12:07 PM -------------
Following the end of the Egyptian War, Ethiopia was filled with outrage against their King. The war had fallen far short of its goals, and too many young men had died in the Battle of Memphis. Many were simply angry that Ethiopia had fought its first war after 1000 years of peace and prosperity.
King Hooray refused to step down from his throne in Aksum. However, he knew that his mistakes had diminished the strength of Ethiopia. So, he relinquished most of his power back to the Eleven Chieftains, who quickly and eagerly restored The Council. The Chieftains did not restore the old Democracy, though, but instead gathered the country's power and influence into their own hands and set up a Republic-style government with The Council as the land's sole authority.
A century of peace lasted following the end of the war and the establishment of the Republic. It was not to last, however. Egypt made open threats against Ethiopia, demanding the return of Thebes and Heliopolis. The Council refused.
In 1640 AD, Egypt decided to take back Thebes and Heliopolis by force. Their Knights struck quickly and without warning.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1640ad.JPG
The defenses of the cities barely held out against the initial attack. But they knew that they wouldn't last long against the mighty armies of Egypt...
The Council panicked. They were not prepared for another war, and even if they had been they knew nothing about waging an effective war.
At this time, King Hooray had gone into seclusion. Leaving the affairs of state to The Council, he retreated to the Forbidden Palace in Kyoto and spent his days there planning for when he might restore the glory of Ethiopia.
One day the Chieftains interrupted King Hooray's solitude and demanded that he help them resolve the situation with Egypt. He told them that it would be impossible to hold on to Thebes and Heliopolis, and that it would be best abandon the cities and evacuate the troops that were stationed there.
This was not an acceptable solution to The Council. They wanted to punish Egypt for this war that had been forced on them, so they devised a more cunning plan. They did decide to evacuate the armies and abandon the cities. However, before doing so, they made an agreement with the Republic of Germany. The agreement was that Germany would take control of Thebes and Heliopolis, thus keeping them out of Egypt's hands. The thinking was that Egypt would not dare start another war with Germany while it was still at war with Ethiopia.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1645ad.JPG
For a while the plan worked. Egypt couldn't afford a war with Germany.
The war between Egypt and Ethiopia lasted for several years, with very few battles fought on either side, and even those battles were on the sea. Ethiopia was the premier naval power of the world, and thus won nearly every battle.
Some degree of prosperity returned to Ethiopia after the war. The most significant event during this time was the foundation of a great trading company in Aksum that expanded Ethiopia's economic power greatly.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1650ad.JPG
Advances were made in commerce and science. New industries using the latest technology began appearing in every town. Before long, Ethiopia entered into a new era of industrialization.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1706ad.JPG
While events were going well in Ethiopia, the Eastern and Western Worlds were torn by several more wars. In the Western World, Persia had begun a massive invasion of Russia and it seemed as if Russia would collapse at any moment. More worrisome was Egypt's declaration of war against the Inca and the Germans in the Eastern World. The Council allocated money and supplies to the governments of Inca and Germany, but it was too little too late.
Egypt seized its cities of Thebes and Heliopolis quickly, as well as several other German cities. And, in the year 1708 AD, they succeeded in wiping out the Incans entirely.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1708ad.JPG
Ethiopia shuddered in fear at the might of Egypt. Now the entire Eastern World was ruled by a single nation. Egypt was easily three times the size of all Ethiopia now. The Council, unsure of what to do, began losing its grip over the country. Rebellions began to spring up everywhere. The people were tired of the inefficient way that The Council ruled.
King Hooray saw his opportunity to retake power. Gathering the armies of Clan Aksum and Kyoto, he suppressed the rebellions, and removed the Chieftains from power. Within five years, he once again claimed his throne in Aksum. This time, however, the people refused to accept King Hooray's rule. They had begun to develop notions of basic freedoms that belonged to everyone regardless of whether they were peasants or merchants or kings. They demanded that King Hooray adopt an official Constitution that guaranteed basic rights and freedoms to the people. After much debating and negotiations, King Hooray accepted their demands and allowed a Constitution to be drafted. Ethiopia officially became a Constitutional Monarchy.
The Council was also restored, but with more limited powers, and it would no longer be controlled by the Chieftains but by elected representatives.
At this time, King Hooray wondered how he could strengthen Ethiopia. Looking to the West, he developed a plan. For the past several centuries, the Western World had been torn by war. However, the three powers of Persia, Siam, and Russia were all of equal strength. No gains or losses were made by any sides, except for a few distant border cities which changed hands many times.
Persia war against Russia changed that dynamic. They had finally won some decisive victories and were pushing south into the heart of Russia.
King Hooray plotted to take advantage of the situation. Russia would not last another two years against Persia. But, why allow Persia to take all of Russia for itself? Why shouldn't Ethiopia declare war on Russia, and prevent the Persians from capturing all of it? Russia was doomed anyway, King Hooray decided, but it presented an opportunity for Ethiopia to gain new glory.
Obtaining permission from The Council, King Hooray declared war on the Republic of Russia in 1725 AD. The chosen invasion point was Crimea Island in the far south.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1725ad.JPG
The war was quick and decisive. The cities of Crimea Island fell with little resistance. Ethiopia then turned its forces to attack the Russian mainland. They captured the cities of Minsk and Vladivstok on Russia's eastern peninsula.
The inevitable happened shortly thereafter when Persia captured the last remnant of Russia.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1742ad.JPG
With Russia destroyed, Ethiopia began to consolidate its gains.
King Hooray distributed control of the Russian territories in this manner:
Clan Aksum would control Odessa.
Clan Matara would control Minsk.
Clan Zeila would control Yakutsk.
Clan Qohayto would control Astrakhan.
Clan Samidi would control Vladivostok.
Clan Tekondo would control Krasnoyarsk.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1741ad.JPG
King Hooray also established a Summer Palace in Odessa in order to better control the Crimean Territories.
Ethiopia's armies had redeemed themselves with the victory over Russia. Sure, it had been a war of aggression, but it was also one of liberation. Persia was a mighty Empire with a cruel emperor who would have enslaved the Russian peoples. The inhabitants of Crimea were saved from the fate, and enjoyed greater freedoms under Ethiopia's Constitution than they had under the rule of Russia.
So, some good came about as a result of the war. More importantly, the armies of Ethiopia regained their confidence and felt ready to take on Egypt once again if it became necessary.
------------
Notes: Switching to Aboslute Monarchy during the first Egyptian War was a bit of a mistake. It completely killed my economy. I switched to Republic after the war to make up for it. Upon entering the Industrial Age I had a choice between Federal Republic and Constitutional Monarchy. I chose the latter because it had a few improvements and wonders which could reduce war weariness.
The second Egypt War caught me off guard. I think gifting the cities to Germany was a very underhanded thing to do, but I was going to lose the cities anyway. Egypt now is the most powerful nation in the world. In fact, Ethiopia is only a distant third to Egypt and Persia. I hope to correct this soon.
The Russian War was blatant aggression, but I had to do it. I needed to increase Ethiopia's strength somehow. Besides, Persia was on the verge of taking it all anyway. No sense in letting the AI get away with everything.
I got an MGL in the battle of Odessa. I used him to rush the Summer Palace.
I also got an SGL in these turns, but didn't feel it worth mentioning. I used him to rush some small wonder, I think.
Coinich Feb 18, 2005, 12:25 PM Hooray: I can't say that I disagree with your thought process on the Russian War. You got to do what you got to do!
Hooray Feb 18, 2005, 12:43 PM Oh, I don't feel bad about the war, make no mistake. I don't need to justify any war to myself. I just wanted to create a justification for the sake of the story. I have a sense of honor in reality, but when it comes to Civ3 I can't be honest with the AI at all because they'll walk all over me.
I probably would have attacked Russia regardless of whether Persia attacked them or not. I needed a Gold resource to build Guilds and Toll Houses, and I need a new source of Incense since my source ran out. Crimea Island had both, thankfully. I also obtained a new luxury at Minsk. I had hoped to get the Gems at Moscow too, but Persia got to it first.
sennomulo Feb 18, 2005, 03:24 PM Perhaps claiming some more Lebensraum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebensraum) in the west is called for so you can more effectively rival Egypt's power...
Hooray Feb 19, 2005, 11:41 AM ------------
Immediately following the Russian War, Egypt declared war on Ethiopia again and launched an invasion of Crimea Island. There, the forces of Egypt encountered the battle-hardened veteran Musketmen of Ethiopia. Egypt's assault was repelled easily, and they soon sought peace. Thus began and ended the third Egyptian War.
When peace came at last to Ethiopia after two short wars, the land enjoyed a renewed era of prosperity. The wisdom of King Hooray's leadership, and the resources being brought in from Crimea combined were responsible for this era.
The prosperity led to the creation of many great new projects, such as the Supreme Court in Matara, and Edison's Workshop in Aksum.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1784ad.JPG
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1792ad.JPG
The peace was not to last, however. Egypt was determined to capture Crimea Island. After the last war they had strengthened and restructured their forces. Then, in 1794 AD, the Egyptians once again launched an invasion of Crimean Island. This was the beginning of the Fourth Egyptian War, also known as the Crimean War since that was where most of the fighting took place.
Ethiopia's hold on Crimea was solid enough that Egypt's invasions were repelled again and again. King Hooray wanted to attack Egypt in retaliation, but he knew that Ethiopia's forces were not sufficient for it. Instead, he sent a large fleet of Frigates to attack Egypt's coastal areas until Egypt was willing to negotiate peace.
While Ethiopia's army was perhaps only the third strongest in the world, their navy was unmatched. The attack on Egypt's coast was a grand success.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1807ad.JPG
In 1810 AD, Egypt finally agreed to negotiations and ceased its attacks on Crimea.
King Hooray knew that it was a false peace. Surely Egypt would declare war again in a few years after it had strengthened and restructured its armies even further. Deciding not to wait for that to happen, King Hooray begin a massive build-up of Ethiopia's military.
New technologies allowed for weapons far superior to those used before. Obsolete muskets were replaced with repeating rifles. Soon, Ethiopia had a large force of Riflemen and Cavalry ready and willing for war. The navy was also expanded to include new Clippers and Iron Frigates which were the fastest ships in the entire world at the time.
In 1846, King Hooray obtained permission from The Council to declare war on Egypt as retaliation for their attacks on Crimea. Ethiopia's fleet and armies were gathered and prepared, and soon shipped away to Egypt.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1846ad.JPG
War was officially declared in 1849 AD. The fleet landed on Egypt's far East coast where England once was. So began the Fifth Egyptian War.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1849ad.JPG
The war began well. Coventry and London were captured immediately. The army fortified itself in London to use it as a headquarters for the invasion.
For the first two years of the war, there was almost no resistance from the Egyptians. But, as the ancient Ethiopian saying goes, "It is calmest before the storm."
In 1853 AD, Egypt suddenly counterattacked at London and Coventry with massive numbers of Cavalry. The defenders were well prepared for the assault, but they hadn't expected Egypt to attack with such a huge army all at once. The casualties were nearly 10 to 1 in Ethiopia's favor, but even with such odds the cities nearly fell. The battle went on for weeks and months on end, with only an occasional rest when both armies were too tired to continue fighting. Casualties were unbelievably high on both sides. By the end of the year, however, the cities remained in Ethiopian hands.
When the English front became more stable, Ethiopia developed an ambitious new plan of attack. Some forces of Bedouin Raiders were secretly sent to Egypt's West coast to pillage and burn the Egyptian countryside, then swiftly move on before the Egyptians could engage them in battle.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1854ad.JPG
The war began proceeding well from there. Egypt continued throwing large numbers of Cavalry at London, but now the Ethiopians were prepared for it. Back home, however, the Ethiopian people began protesting the massive casualties of the war. King Hooray increased luxury spending, but he knew it was only a temporary solution.
After much fighting, the Ethiopian army managed to push forward and capture Hastings and York. It looked as though Egypt was finally giving ground and the Ethiopia could begin a massive offensive and strike into the heart of Egypt.
It was not to be. In the year 1860 AD, Egypt coerced Siam and Persia into an alliance and made them declare war on Ethiopia. The Fifth Egyptian War had officially become a World War.
After a few more years of fighting, it soon became apparent that Ethiopia could not sustain a war on two fronts. So, in 1862 AD, Ethiopia signed a peace agreement with Egypt and redirected its forces to Crimea to hold off the attacks from Persia.
These are the lands which Ethiopia managed to capture from Egypt before the war ended:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1862ad.JPG
With heavy heart, King Hooray prepared for war with Persia and Siam. A great opportunity to crush Egypt had slipped from his grasp. Still, he proved that victory was possible. Some day soon Ethiopia would once again challenge Egypt.
-------------
Notes: There were actually several Great and Small Wonders I built during this time, but I didn't feel like getting screenshots of all of them. I think they were: Universal Suffrage, Theory of Evolution, East India Company, and Eiffel Tower.
I maybe should have allied with Persia and Siam. But, I hate military alliances because I always find myself fighting a war long after I was ready to make peace just so I wouldn't ruin my reputation. It backfired this time.
Words cannot describe Egypt's massive attacks on London. I just sat there in shock for minutes on end as Cavalry after Cavalry appeared from the fog and attacked my cities. They just kept coming and coming, and I eventually began to wonder if it would ever end. My only saving grace was that I had two Rifleman armies in the city. But even so they were redlined quickly and weaker defenders did most of the rest of the fighting.
After 20 or 30 minutes, it finally ended. London was only barely standing. I literally yelled "FINALLY!" when it was my turn again.
After a few turns I began to push back, but only slowly. But, with the combination of war weariness and the alliance of Persia and Siam I had no choice but to make peace with Egypt.
QuoVadisNation Feb 19, 2005, 02:41 PM It's stories like this that make me want to play all over again, but then again, it's stories like this that made me throw my civilization disk across Route 9 and run away.

rbis4rbb Feb 19, 2005, 05:55 PM great update. What happened to India and Germany?
Hooray Feb 19, 2005, 06:28 PM India was destroyed by Egypt sometime before the First Egyptian War. I believe I made sure to mention any time that a civ was destroyed in my posts. Germany was nearly wiped out a while back, but they've managed to stay alive with one city on an island. The AI is so bad at amphibious invasions that Germany's one city is basically invincible now.
Gogf Feb 19, 2005, 10:05 PM What level is this? Sorry if that's already been asked.
Anyway, great story!
Hooray Feb 20, 2005, 07:54 AM ------------
As much as King Hooray wanted to punish Persia and Siam for interfering in the war against Egypt, he kept his anger in check and decided that a swift end to the Persia-Siam war was needed so that Ethiopia's forces could be redirected to Egypt once more.
Persia had different ideas. The cruel emperor Xerxes was still angry that Ethiopia stole Crimea away from him. So, he sent his entire military to Ethiopia's stronghold at Minsk, hoping to take Crimea in one swift stroke.
However, Persia was a bit behind the times. More than 80% of their cavalry forces consisted of obsolete Horse Archers, and only here and there among their forces were some more modern Hussars and Dragoons. Persia sent wave after wave of cavalry at Minsk, much like Egypt's assaults on London, but this time they were no match for Ethiopia's modern Riflemen. The Persian casualties were unbelievably high.
Soon, reinforcements from the Egyptian front arrived, and Ethiopia began to push back at Persia. The cavalry struck quickly at Novgorod, taking the city easily. Then, they marched toward Moscow hoping to force Persia into peace negotiations. After the city was captured, Persia agreed to meet with Ethiopian envoys. Soon after, the Siamese also agreed to negotiations, after the Ethiopian fleet had completely ruined their coastline.
In 1871 AD, the first World War came to an end, with Ethiopia as the victor.
These are the territories which Ethiopia captured from Persia:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1871ad.JPG
King Hooray put Moscow under the control of Clan Aksum, and Novgorod under Clan Sabat.
The economy boomed after the end of the war. There was a sense of excitement among the populace after their country had taken on the entire world and not only survived it, but had actually won.
The symbol of this era of thriving capitalism was the Empire State Building in Aksum, which was the tallest building in the entire world.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1885ad.JPG
But always in the backs of the peoples' minds, they knew that another, greater was coming. The Egyptian war had been left unfinished, and both sides were itching to finish the fight. In the late 1880's, King Hooray began a massive recruiting campaign to swell the ranks of Ethiopia's military.
Recent advances in military technology led to the invention of superior weapons for the Ethiopian forces. The creation of Automatic Weapons in particular boosted the might of the military many-fold.
Before long, many were saying that Ethiopia had surpassed Egypt as the world's foremost military power. Egypt would not stand for this. Another war was coming soon, and its scope and magnitude would far exceed that of any previous war...
------------

Notes: Well, this update was a little shorter. The main reason is that the story finally caught up to where I am in the game. I'm fighting Egypt now, and I can't really post an update on it until the war is over.
Persian war was a bit annoying. Thankfully they mostly had obsolete Horse Archers, those fools. I could have easily taken more territory from Persia, but I wanted to save my strength for Egypt. Plus, war weariness was really bad at this time, and I'm not sure why. Maybe the people were just unhappy that I lost the luxuries that Siam and Persia had been trading to me.
As soon as the war was over, I began a massive military build-up of Riflemen, Artillery, Cavalry, and Leathernecks. I decided to wait until Automatic Weapons before declaring war. As soon as I hit that technology, I upgraded all those Riflemen and Leathernecks to Trenchers and Amphibious Infantry respectively. I also built up a large fleet of Dreadnaughts and Transports. Also, after Automatic Weapons, I began building up forces of Machine Gunners too.
I am ready for war, and boy is this going to be a big one!
I answered this before, so I hope everyone sees it this time: The difficulty level is Monarch. I play all my games on Monarch these days. I'm good enough that I could move up to Emperor, but I don't want to. I want the game to be just difficult enough that I don't get bored, but not so difficult that I get frustrated. Eventually I might get bored with Monarch, and then I'll move up.

Aegis Shield Mar 01, 2005, 07:33 AM Nah, Egypt isn't close to being a runaway civilization space dragon. Egypt is large and powerful, no doubt, but he's got a good foothold on the continent. Two opened fronts, and he's divided that north pocket of cities from the mainland. If he concentrates on taking that pocket of cities, Egypt will be weakened and he'll have a very strong base of operations. The fact that that army is just waltzing around pillaging the Egyptian heartland will also come in handy too. It'll be an insane war, but he has a very good position to win it.
Good story man!

Nevermind. Fortunately I did actually finish this game before I went on my civ hiatus. I'll do my best to find time to write up the account soon.

Despite the prosperity of the era after the World War, Ethiopia continued its military build-up. Before long, Ethiopia declared itself to have fully surpassed Egypt as the world's premiere military power. It looked as if another war was inevitable. The world waited for Ethiopia to make its move against Egypt.
That move never came. Instead, Egypt felt threatened by Ethiopia's might and declared war first in 1892 AD in order to swiftly retake England before Ethiopia's forces could prepare themselves for the invasion.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_1892ad.JPG
Ethiopia responded by allying with Persia and Siam against Egypt, thus officially starting a second World War.
Now, although they had been caught somewhat off-guard by Egypt's sudden declaration of war, Ethiopia already had troops and plans in place for the inevitable war. Ethiopia had four secret plans ready to defeat Egypt. Two of the plans were put into effect immediately, while the other two still needed some time before they could be implemented.
The first plan was codenamed Operation Front Gate. It was a purely defensive plan that would lure Egypt's offensive forces to England where Egypt would encounter greater defenses than they had accounted for. Also, once offensive operations could implemented, then Egypt's army would be too busy attacking England to repel any invasions. At present, the majority of Ethiopia's defensive troops were stationed in Egypt for this operation.

The second plan was a purely naval operation codenamed Operation Window. Ethiopia's fleet of Dreadnaughts, the most powerful ships in the world, would begin a massive bombardment of Egypt's West Coast. Afterwards, amphibious troops would invade the bombarded areas and burn and pillage anything that was left, then they would retreat back to their ships before Egypt could retaliate.

The two operations were an immediate success. Egypt's offensive was crushed by the powerful defense forces at Hastings, but they continued to throw troops at Front Gate not knowing that was what Ethiopia wanted them to do. Window meanwhile completely destroyed the cities of Heliopolis and Thebes, and moved to destroy other coastal cities.
After two years of the war, Ethiopia was ready to implement its other two secret plans in 1894 AD.
The third plan was codenamed Operation Basement. As in the previous war, obsolete Bedouin Raider troops were swiftly cross the plains of Egypt burning and pillaging everything in their wake. Surprisingly, Egypt still had no defense against this tactic.
Secret File: Operation Basement (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_OperationBasement.JPG)
The fourth and most important plan was codenamed Operation Back Door. The full might of Ethiopia's offensive forces would secretly land in the Ottoman Sub-continent and capture that territory while Egypt's forces were tied up with Operation Front Gate. Eventually it was hoped that Back Door could drive into Egypt's heartland.
Secret File: Operation Back Door (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Eth_OperationBackDoor.JPG)
All of the operations proved to be successful. Back Door captured Adana and moves to take Uskudar as well. Window razed Pi-Ramesses and turned its attention north to take former Indian cities.
However, at Front Gate, although Ethiopia continued to be victorious, the casualties were massive on both sides. The citizens back home in Ethiopia began to protest against the war as a result. King Hooray took measures to reduce dissent, and hoped that he could conclude the war before his citizens grew too weary of it.
Soon after, Back Door captured the city of Uskudar after a fierce battle. In 1897 AD, the fifth year of the war, Egypt finally realized what a threat that Operation Back Door was. They redirected their troops away from England and towards Ottoman.
Ethiopia was prepared for this change in tactics. So, Back Door was instructed to go on the defensive while Front Gate went on the offensive.
Meanwhile Operation Window was coming to an end after it razed Karachi and Byblos, thus destroying nearly all of Egypt's West Coast. In 1898 AD, Window captures the old Indian capitol of Delhi, but rather than razing it, Ethiopia took control of the city and garrisoned many troops there hoping to open up a third front.

Shortly after the capture of Delhi, Front Gate was finally ready to begin its offensive operations. They struck swiftly at Paramonga, a former Incan city, and fortified their position there.
At the turn of the century in 1900 AD, Egypt regrouped its forces and changed their tactics again. This time they launched massive offensives against all three fronts. Delhi and Paramonga barely survived the attacks, but they survived nonetheless. At Back Door, however, the Egyptian forces were utterly crushed in battle at Uskudar.
Afterwards, Egypt focused its attacks on Front Gate yet again. This allowed the Delhi and Back Door fronts to continue their offensive operations.
In 1901 ad, leftover troops from Operation Window marched on Madras and captured the city after a difficult battle.

At the same time, Back Door captured the former German city of Frankfurt. This victory succeeded in completely blocking off the Ottoman sub-continent from the rest of Egypt.

After 10 years of war, in 1902 AD, King Hooray realized that even the war was proceeding well, there was no possibility of Ethiopia conquering the heart of Egypt. Instead, he set a more realistic goal that would pemanently weaken Egypt and possible prevent future wars. The decision was made to subjugate as much of the Ottoman Sub-continent as possible, then seek peace with Egypt.
1903 AD saw massive fighting on all three fronts, but they all held steadily. Back Door pushed further and captured Iznik along with the ancient Ottoman capitol of Istanbul.
The final battle of the war came in 1904 AD at Bursa.
At this time, weariness of the war at home was worse than it had ever been. The economy was also collapsing since everything was being put into the war. King Hooray had hoped to capture the rest of Ottoman, but knew that the war could not be sustained any longer without risking the safety and prosperity of Ethiopia.
So, after the battle of Bursa, a summit between all the nations of the world was held in London. There, Egypt officially signed its surrender to the allied forces. By the terms of the surrender, Egypt would not have give up any territory, but they did have to pay massive reparations to the alliance, most of which was paid to Ethiopia.
So in the summer of 1904 AD, after 12 years of non-stop fighting, the Second World War came to an end, and the world returned to its former peace. Egypt had not been fully defeated, but they had been weakened sufficiently that they would never again be a threat. In fact, now no nation offered any threat the great superpower that Ethiopia had become.
Ethiopia returned once again to an era of peaceful economic prosperity. The Ethiopians looked towards an era the would hopefully bring unending peace with their nation as the single greatest economic, military, and cultural force in the entire world.

Notes: Yeah, I got hit by war weariness pretty bad. Plus, I had turned research off completely to fund the massive unit support costs of the war. I really had to end it in order to get my economy back on track.
Note that at this point in the game, it takes two turns per year (or rather 6 months per turn). So the war was actually a bit longer than it may seem in these posts. Most of the time was spent just fending off Egypt's massive attacks.
Well it's almost over, folks. But how will it end? Will Ethiopia use its might to conquer the world? Will it win diplomatically with the United Nations (or alternatively the League of Nations)? Or perhaps some other method? We shall see in due time.

 Yeah, it looks like Egypt really took it in the back door, too! Good work, I might add.
Licentia Mar 10, 2005, 05:23 AM Hooray: I can't say that I disagree with your thought process on the Russian War. You got to do what you got to do!
In Civ 3, this statement couldn't be more true. If you do not take the opportunity to conquer a weaker nation, it will come back and bite you in the a$$ guaranteed! Because every time you sit back, a powerful AI nation will finish the weaklings off and grow bigger than you because of it.
Great story Hooray!
This is the point where the story goes downhill though. He is the superpower, and when that happens, the AI is helpless. It all ended for Egypt once Hooray captured and fortified the cities in England.
At first I didn't think that cutting off the north from the south was a very good idea, until I saw that the northern cities were really small and on poor terrain. Cutting them off left them completely helpless. And the plundering of the coast idea was simply brilliant. I haven't seen a strategy like that before. Some of Egypts best cities were along the coast.
Captin Zebra Mar 10, 2005, 12:43 PM great story, keep it up. im really enjoying it :goodjob:
vikingruler Mar 10, 2005, 07:33 PM this story is the greatest thing i have ever read. first it sounded like you were doing pretty bad, but when you declared war on russia and took that area i thought it was a great strategey. then egypt looked like it would destroy you but then WWII came you turned everything around. btw is your rep good, i mean you declared war on persia, persia and siam both were at war with you and i assume egypt is furious with you. so how can you get a diplo win? i would go with culture. i can't wait for your next post! :D
Hooray Mar 11, 2005, 07:44 AM ---------------
Once again, the economy boomed following the end of the war. The productive capacity of Ethiopia's cities had been greatly increased for the sake of the war, and now that productivity was being put to use for domestic economic needs.
Peace reigned for many years. Ethiopia was a world super-power, and no nation could hope to challenge it. King Hooray even once boldly stated that all the nations of the world combined could offer no threat to Ethiopia. None of the other nations fought wars with each other, either, since they feared that aggression might prompt Ethiopia to interfere.
Gradually, Ethiopia began to withdraw from world affairs. No international trading was necessary since Ethiopia controlled all the natural resources it would ever need within its own borders. Diplomacy also stagnated because Ethiopia had simply lost its interest in foreign affairs.
So, while Ethiopia's attention was turned inward, the other nations felt safe in returning to their old warlike ways.
Siam had been building up its military forces for some time, and became the greatest military power of the Western World. In 1922 AD, Siam invaded Persia, and made sweeping gains in Southern Persia. Persia allied itself with Egypt and Germany, thus starting a third World War.
King Hooray's advisors urged him to interfere with the war and put a stop to the fighting. But, King Hooray had a vision for world peace and knew that more wars would accomplish nothing. Instead, he allowed the fighting on the other continents to continue.
After a few years, when the other nations grew tired of the war, King Hooray put a plan into action. Ethiopian envoys were sent out to the war-torn areas to spread propaganda and information. The envoys gave a message of peace and hope to war-weary peoples of the world. They too would know peace and prosperity if they would only agree to join Ethiopia. The wonderful city of Aksum was cited as a shining example of the prosperity that was possible under Ethiopia's rule.
The people remained loyal to their home nations, but slowly discontent began to grow in their hearts and minds.
As the 1930's began, the war continued and showed no signs of ending. The leaders of Siam, Egypt, and Persia were on a mad quest for dominance that would lead only to their own destruction.
Then things began to change. A small Persian border town decided to pledge allegiance to Ethiopia in hopes of escaping the war. Then a Siamese town did the same. The news of these revolts spread. More Persian towns threw off their oppressive government. Then an Egyptian town revolted. All of them were welcomed into Ethiopia's protection.
The governments of the world tried to suppress the news, but found it an impossible task. A great momentum had begun that nothing could stop.
By 1939, more than half of the world's cities had declared their allegiance to Ethiopia, with more cities doing the same every week and month.
King Hooray smiled to himself as his ambitious vision was finally realized. Ethiopian culture had proven to be more powerful than even the deadliest of guns and bombs. Within a few years the entire world would be Ethiopian, with the mighty city of Aksum at its center.

Notes: Well, nothing much happened for a while until Siam declared war on Persia (which was quite a surprise. Siam had been weak and peaceful the whole game).
Shortly after I got a One City Cultural Victory in Aksum. In RAR, victory comes at 25,000 culture rather than 20,000 because it has more cultural buildings and wonders. Just look at that screenshot up there. 95 culture per turn. That's really incredible.
I thought about what exactly happens when you get a Cultural Victory. I figured that the world's cities probably start culture-flipping to you, so that's what the story was trying to represent.
I learned a lot about RAR in this game. I really like this mod. I'll probably keep playing with it instead of the regular game.
Thank you for reading and commenting. I will almost surely give more accounts of my Civ3 games in the future.
Captin Zebra Mar 11, 2005, 09:58 AM congratulations on the vioctory Hooray, hopefully my story will go just as well...

Hooray Sep 12, 2006, 07:38 PM Thank you. I'm surprised someone bumped up this old thread.
This may have been one of the best games I've played. I'm glad I have a record of it here so I can relive it whenever I want. I still remember suffering 30-minute interturns, not because of lag, but endless waves upon waves of Egyptian Cavalry!
502nd PIR Sep 15, 2006, 10:25 PM Yes, i know, i'm bumping, but i found this pretty intresting. Can we expect another game like this?
Hooray Sep 16, 2006, 06:00 AM It depends. I often think about doing another story, but then something else comes up that requires my attention more.
