Has anyone successfully added an image to "buildings-large.pcx" and had it appear in the game? I have tinkered a little, but with no results. Is anyone aware of any limitations here?

I have tinkered a little, but with no results. Is anyone aware of any limitations here? ahenobarb Dec 06, 2001, 04:32 PM Okay, no takers there. Has anyone "tried" to add images to the "Buildings-large.pcx" and failed? At least then, I could get a confirm to stop trying. Gramphos Dec 06, 2001, 05:04 PM What do you mean by add images? Add images to existing buildings, or add images for new buildings? ahenobarb Dec 06, 2001, 06:20 PM Add images for new buildings. I have done this successfully for "buildings-small.pcx" by filling in the blank boxes at the bottom. When I ran out of blank boxes, I just pasted in a new grid and continued. All the buildings show up in the game. However, I tried this same trick for the large buildings, but even though there are 1 or 2(? -- I forget off hand) empty boxes at the bottom, if you put something there, it does not show up in gameplay. Has anyone else encountered this? Or am I missing something? Since the same procedures worked for the small buildings graphics, but not the large ones, I am inclined to think that currently, they can't be added. That is unless someone tells me different. ahenobarb Dec 07, 2001, 10:04 AM Bump! Movin' on up.... To the top! Gramphos Dec 07, 2001, 10:21 AM I don't know, where are the large buildings used (don't remember right now). I think I've mannaged to copy old icons (C3CT does that) and get it working. ahenobarb Dec 07, 2001, 12:36 PM The only place I have seen the large Icons used is in the city screen. The small icons are used on the left hand column denoting what has been built in the city, and small icons are used in the drop down menu for selecting what you want to build. The LARGE icons are used to illustrate what you have selected to build, i.e. they only seem to appear in the large box above the columns of shields being used to build your current selection. It is not absolutely necessary for there to be an icon there, since most city improvements are built within or around 30 turns and usually you're not watching the improvement being built each turn. It's just a minor annoyance for some city improvements I added. Dark Sheer Dec 07, 2001, 04:14 PM If you are looking for the picture that appears in the city view they should be under art/cityview/building. As to the file you mentioned, I notice Police Station is 29 while Wealth is 33. Maybe you should try inserting you new icon in between these two? Alternatively, there is also another two files under art/cityview/building called additionalbuilding.pcx which from the content of the file it seems to be where the user defined building's art should be for them to appear in the city. I have yet to try on adding improvements so I can't say for sure how these file works. But based on experience in editing files for units, the new icons are not inserted at the end of the original icons thats for sure. For units, the new icons must be inserted between the end of the current units' icon and the era icon cause the era icon are hard coded to be the last 8. It might be the same case for the building icons. ;) Gramphos Dec 07, 2001, 04:28 PM I think I've seen it added by the Copytool. ahenobarb Dec 07, 2001, 05:15 PM Hmmm, "hardcoded" doesn't sound promising. I'll try it through the copy tool and see if it gets me anywhere. Or better yet, install the patch and see if it's fixed!! Hopefully, they added more room to mod. ahenobarb Dec 08, 2001, 04:46 PM Here's screenshot illustrating the problem. ahenobarb Dec 10, 2001, 10:39 AM So, given the wave of responses, the verdict is: as things stand now (pre-patch) you can add graphics for new buildings in the "buildings-small.pcx" but not the "buildings-large.pcx" BTW: I tried to install the patch last night, but now the game crashes after you select your map-type. Bummer.:( Dark Sheer Dec 10, 2001, 11:55 AM Thats why I am holding back my patching until I see no more moaning about the patch on the forum :D While I really hope there will be a patch again to stop all this people from moaning, I really hate to download another 7+MB patch using my 56k modem:( ahenobarb Dec 11, 2001, 10:04 AM Patches and rags... I don't know what's up with the patch, so I'm sitting it out as well. I tried it, but I just get crashes. And I really need to update my mod! Dark Sheer Dec 13, 2001, 10:55 AM I fianlly go about trying to add wonders in my mod and after editing the building-large.pcx the icon appear fine in my test game?? I just add the new icon after the spaceship parts icon. Its just like the unit icons but in this case the program assume whatever you added are the last one after the the 10 spaceship parts. :king: ahenobarb Dec 20, 2001, 09:22 AM Great news! I don't know why I can't get this to work for me. It's kinda frustrating. At least I know it can be done now. I'll see if I can add this to my mod. BTW: if your doing the FBI, you might look around for a photo of the J Edgar Hoover building. There are bound to be some good one out on the web somewhere. ahenobarb Dec 24, 2001, 02:43 PM I tried this and still no success. Are you using the patch? Dark Sheer Dec 25, 2001, 12:45 AM I am now :D But I did that test before the patch though  Maybe you can post your 2 pcx files here for me to test it ? micmc_atl_ga Jan 09, 2002, 05:23 AM Heya Sheer, I got the same problem that Ahenobarb was haivng, the small building.pcx changes show up just fine, but the window in the 'to be built' thingie don't work no matter what I do to the large-building.pcx, (and trust me I've done lots of things to that file, most of which are illegal in Georgia) Any ideas on how to make the thing work? thanks in advance. Dark Sheer Jan 09, 2002, 06:07 AM First I use Civ3CopyTool to duplicate a wonder. Civ3CopyTool actually expand the file, add a new line and copy the icon for the old wonder there. After that I just copy and paste the icon that I want to use to replace the one copied by C3CT ;) And it work just fine. :king: Darth-Bull Jun 27, 2002, 04:52 PM Dammit, I have the same problem as ahenobarb, god dammit! On my PC the icons are black in the game. And I didnt take a backup of my buildings-large.pcx and buildings-small.pcx, will someone PLEASE post those to files, and maybe help me with a sollution?? I have read all above. |
