View Full Version : England Empire vs Spanish Empire pavelsu Dec 06, 2001, 09:45 AM Wich empire became bigger and stronger in the history, Spanish or English? fonz Apr 07, 2002, 01:29 PM Don't you mean the British Empire? Or by English do you pre 15th centuray the days of Henry V etc. History_Buff Apr 07, 2002, 03:35 PM The British. When they were at thier peak many hundreds of years ago, they controlled 22% of the worlds estimated population, far more than the Spanish empire ever gained. They also managed to fight thier way to their status from a relatively state, and controlled much of the Med and India, even though they never had bases there. kIndal Apr 08, 2002, 02:12 AM I believe that this threat was started some time ago here, in CFC, with a poll a tons of insults to Spanish, Spain and Spanish Empire so please, I dont want to read one more time all the nosenses and Black Legend stories from the same guys of always  in fact it was called with the same name...and....dont you open it, pavelsu? cephyn Apr 08, 2002, 02:33 AM Originally posted by History_Buff The British. I partially agree -- by only mentioning pop control, it could then be said that the Chinese and Indians are on top of the world now (which i think would be a misstatement) The British, at their peak, controlled not only 1/4 of the world pop but ALSO 1/4 of the world land area -- and THATS an accomplishment. Also, it wasn't many hundreds of years ago, their peak was pretty intact just prior to WW1. Many of their gains were during the strongly Imperialistic Victorian Era. This is not to disparage the Spanish in any way (no worries Kindal, I won't bash them) -- Their power in the Americas especially is not to be ignored, and the Spanish influence is clearly still felt there today -- but I still think the British Empire is "better" -- not a value judgment, just more powerful/influential over all. Someone digged this out. This had been debated before, the last time and I suggest that the mods might want to consider locking this thread. Esp since comparison threads are now banned.
