View Full Version : New Unit: Fluyt
Orthanc Feb 15, 2005, 05:40 PM Wow, this unit has been a lesson in several things, unfortunately one of those is procrastination. :(
Sorry everyone this took forever, but now its finally here and now I can finally decide what to do next.
...
...
...
I'll get to that soon, anywho here's the new Dutch unit you've all been waiting for. Everything's in the file, just follow the readme as usual. A note to everyone, I did make the sails a little 'dirtier' as suggested but it might not show to much in the animations due to I think the palette maybe. Anywho I tried, maybe I'll change the palette for the next unit (whatever it may be).
As usual I'm also going to attach a enlarged Civilopedia pic so you know what you're getting ahead of time. Here's the file link:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Fluyt.zip
And the preview is below as should be obvious, enjoy! :goodjob:
Kinboat Feb 15, 2005, 06:18 PM That looks phenominal :D
Ares de Borg Feb 15, 2005, 06:35 PM This one rocks! Did you somehow export it from "Pirates!"? Looks great.
May I ask for an East Indiaman?
Scytale Feb 15, 2005, 06:36 PM woaw!! one of the best ships i,ve seen! it looks very dynamic! :goodjob:
Ares de Borg Feb 15, 2005, 06:44 PM Just another "thank you! arrr!" for this baby. It's a nice alternative to the Galleon, just smaller. About 300 tons defended by only 12 cannons. ;-)
Now imagine the East Indiaman... 700 tons and above, guarded by 300 men and up to 54 cannons... worthy prey for the Privateer and aaglos Pirate Frigate... please make one, Orthanc!
GRM7584 Feb 15, 2005, 07:09 PM Straight into the Colonize mod with thee, Fluyt. I will scratch it off my list. An East Indiaman would be useful if you care to do another ship so soon.
Ozymandias Feb 15, 2005, 08:08 PM Simply wonderful! :goodjob: Perhaps procrastination has its virtues ... :mischief:

utahjazz7 Feb 15, 2005, 08:50 PM That looks very impressive!
Orthanc Feb 15, 2005, 09:37 PM It's not exported directly from "Pirates!", Ares de Borg, but I did use the design from it.
East Indianman would be the largest version of the Merchantman (in the Pirates! remake that is), and if that's the case it would not be difficult to make since it has a relatively standard hull shape. Hmmm...
Since there seems to be a lot more interset in sailing ships with all this Pirate stuff going on, I've decided on East Indianman as my next project. The hull being standard in shape I won't have nearly as many problems with it as with the Fluyt. But after this I WILL be doing the Titanic. Anywho, thank's everyone for the reviews! :D
Left Feb 15, 2005, 09:45 PM Awesome! Ill use it in my Caribbean scen im working on. Your sloop and corvette look great in game too.
TopGun Feb 15, 2005, 09:58 PM My new favorite ship in Civ! (Sorry, Wyrm... ;) )

Rob (R8XFT) Feb 15, 2005, 11:01 PM A very professional job indeed - and well worth the wait  !
aaglo Feb 16, 2005, 12:07 AM Good job, Orthanc.
I think I can retire from the docks now :) :p
utahjazz7 Feb 16, 2005, 07:28 AM Good job, Orthanc.
I think I can retire from the docks now :) :p
That's unacceptable; I'm sorry.
Zion_Withrow Feb 16, 2005, 10:01 AM Great job!
Snorken Feb 16, 2005, 10:24 AM Beautiful! :)
Ekmek Feb 16, 2005, 10:55 AM Wow! Excellent job. ASRe you doing anymore? Interested in making a what-if mesoAmerican ship?
Ares de Borg Feb 16, 2005, 04:00 PM Since there seems to be a lot more interset in sailing ships with all this Pirate stuff going on, I've decided on East Indianman as my next project.
Thank you!

Bungus Feb 16, 2005, 04:22 PM Great model, great job, even without the crew...
My only critiscisms are the sails are still a little too white and the boat drops to the bottom of the ocean like its made of lead (but that can be alleviated in an editor).
Bobisback Mar 01, 2005, 09:12 PM Do you no were I can get the corvette, and sloop?
btw love the Fluyt:goodjob:
Snorken Mar 02, 2005, 11:23 AM You can find the Corvette here:

Bobisback Mar 02, 2005, 07:47 PM Nice thanks, I must have missed those, bad mistake their Awesome to:goodjob:
zulu9812 Mar 02, 2005, 08:52 PM very cool your a true artist!
there's always some **** of a newbie who insists on spamming the units forums ...
solteq Mar 02, 2005, 10:32 PM I'm a n00b, but I agree wholeheartedly.
Orthanc Mar 03, 2005, 02:34 PM I appreciate the complement Norsk_Viking, but if you're just writing to give yourself more posts or entertain yourself then I suggest you stop going through every recent/quasi-recent unit thread and commenting as you have done. If you are being sincere, great and thanks, if not, you know that and should consider my suggestion.
Even if you are being sincere, just a friendly hint that you shouldn't do this sort of 'comment-fest', it's good to complement but try to do that in only recent (ie: within 2-3 days of release) unit release threads. It just makes the forums nicer and avoids irritating other users.
Oh and thank's P.S.Y.C.H.O. for posting those links and everyone should know that work has began (however slowly) on the East Indianman.
lifeaquatic Mar 03, 2005, 02:58 PM wow gee, orthanc, too late for my 1.0 release but I would like to see about adding some of your ships for 2.0. Could you link me all your sailing vessel creations? Thank you good sir!
lifeaquatic Mar 03, 2005, 04:43 PM Ya in game that fluyt is the shizzle Orthanc. You are no longer the apprentice, aaglo is retiring so you are now the Shipwright!
Congratulations! Could someone link me those other creations of his?
Orthanc Mar 04, 2005, 03:28 PM Well if the people agree...
(changes title)
Ok! Well there's really only one other GOOD unit that I've done besides this one and the other two that already have links here and that's the Trident, but I'll just put all the links together for you:
Trident:

Sloop (version 2):

Fluyt:
You are here
lifeaquatic Mar 04, 2005, 05:39 PM Your deffinately the best ship creator here. Your genius really shows once the units are in the game. They seem over simple at a look but in the game they are so sharp. I really hope you make more ships for us era of the sails fanatics. I would like to sea that East Indiamen or a brigantine or something.
Anyways your units will be in the 2.0 release of my scenario. I really hope you try it out, let me know what you think.
You should take on an apprentice now, btw. Get the sails movement rolling!
lifeaquatic Mar 05, 2005, 01:13 PM Orthanc, you unit the Corvette, the PCX files for the pedia show up as a black sqare in the game. Whats wrong with them? Can you fix it?
Much appreciated
ES_Sparky Jul 04, 2005, 04:23 PM Crazy. I could have sworn I posted in here. *looks around for missing post*
Nice collection of ships, Orthanc. How long have you been at modding? Slightly OT, but I am curious.
Orthanc Jul 05, 2005, 11:33 AM I noticed that too, yesterday I got notification that a new post had been made here but there was nothing, wierd. Anyways, I started using POV-Ray in late November, I fiddled around with a few other programs before that but POV-Ray is really were I have developed my skills.
Bungus Jul 05, 2005, 02:11 PM Crazy. I could have sworn I posted in here. *looks around for missing post* Well, I'm sorry I missed it. Must have been very important for you to bring up a 4 month old thread.
Oh well, since its up, what's going on Orthanc?
Orthanc Jul 05, 2005, 06:05 PM Last direction of the death animation for the Highwind: Jet Mode is rendering as I type. Once that's done I just have to put the Death animation together, make a civilopedia entry, get the sounds and put everything together and it's done!
My next units will be the Sloop 3rd Edition and a 1600's-1800's submarine, since they're both small it won't take long for those to be finished. But then I'm doing the Ragnorok from FF8, that might take quite a while.
Goldflash Jul 06, 2005, 12:19 AM Hey Orthanc. I have been saying "Ooji Booji! Penguin King!" alot recently. I don't know what it means but its fun to say.
.... Nice Boat?
Bungus Jul 06, 2005, 02:03 AM Old timey submerines, we have one of those in my town. Sits at the harbor, looking wooden. Its pretty cool I guess, but the damn harbor security are all hardcore about the rule-book and won't let us take it out for a dip.
Anyway, for your model, think extruded rectangle with curved sides.
Orthanc Jul 06, 2005, 10:35 AM Well its quite simple Goldflash, Ooji Booji is the Penguin King and he's leading them in world domination from the Arctic, and don't say "But Penguins live in the Antarctic" because that's what they want you to think! (Maniacal Laughter)
Don't worry Bungus, I've already got the design, it'll be more of an extended sphere with the ends clipped to make it lok like a barrel, which it essentially is. The actual name (because 1600-1800's Submarine isn't very creative) will be Paddle Barrel, since it will also have paddle wheels at the sides.
Goldflash Jul 06, 2005, 05:27 PM I SOOO need that on a tee shirt now.
Bungus Jul 06, 2005, 07:51 PM Ooh, ours must be an advanced submarine, it could hold two or three barrels. Funny, I just past it twice today and still didn't even think to examine it.
CEO Daedalus Sep 28, 2007, 09:38 PM i didnt see the forum
Anyway. There was no Fluyt Run wav. is it just me cuz this is probably the first wav file issue for this unit ?
I think il make a mod based on your boats.
EDIT: dont you have a mod based on your boats before i go el loco designo ?
Nwoll Sep 28, 2007, 10:21 PM Yeah, the .ini should say FluytSplash.wav not FluytRun.wav.
The sound file is there just misnamed in the ini
