View Full Version : Naming a Nation - Preliminary Discussion

In DG1, we were Phoenatica. In DG2, we were called Fanatikans. DG3 saw the rise of Fanaticans. DG4 again witnessed Fanaticans, while most recently we were Japanaticans.

We're still several days away from finally picking our Civ, but this is a subject we can start discussion ahead of time, though it's looking like we may be Ottomans.

So, this is just a thread were we can throw around some ideas, given a hypothetical civ. Propose away!

Well, it looks like a strong showing for the Ottomans, but anything could happen. (Looks like Babylon might be a 2nd choice for the runoff, and possibly the Iroquois and India). I don't have any ideas right now though.

...

Otticans?
Fanotticans?

Otters? :p

We should have Random in the runoffs as an option.

Random was excluded, so we will see Civ3 versus PTW/C3C vs Random.

Well, the Ottomans referred to their capital city as the "Sublime Porte". Perhaps we could be the "Sublimicans"?

Memalik-i

It has an Ottoman orgin, and it is differant from the previous 5 we've used (which always had a -ca or -can at the end). Don't ask me how to pronounce it though... it's one hell of a tounge twister.

We can call ourselves the Mahruse, in turn.

In the previous games, the countrys' names have all ended with "...aticans." Maybe we should change that. I'm reminded of something from Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

We are no longer the knights who go Ni!. We are now the knights who say ecky-ecky-ecky-POOTANG! -zoopboing-gwzowden!

So how about becoming the Ecky-Ecky-Ecky-POOTANG!-Zoopboing-Gwzowdenians?

Also, the Dutch have no chance of coming back against the Ottoman. Shame, though. I'd have thought we'd have wanted to try a civ with new traits on it for our first C3C game.

The following is a shameless plug for the English

But wait! We can! The English have been changed to Com/Sea. Sea is new! Instead of sticking to a Ind/Sci civ (which, if you recall, we did already with Persia), we can use the new Seafaring ability. Come on, everybody! Doff your monicle and stiffen your upper lip. Lets be the English!

Well, the name is sorta important. The name of our nation is one of the most important choices we make for the start of the game. There's nothing wrong with giving the name its due consideration.

DaveShack
Feb 26, 2005, 02:20 PM
This is going to need to be wrapped up as soon as possible, since we cannot run Creation Day without the information.

I suggest going through an official name nomination and seconding process. For a name to be considered it must have a minimum of three people supporting it (submitter and two seconds). After 2 days, a poll is created using the names which got at least 3 mentions in the nomination thread. If WOTP as measured by times a name is mentioned in the thread shows a clear gap between a few (less than 5 names) with a lot more (at least twice as many) mentions as the rest of the field, then the poll will contain only those names which are above the "gap".

If there is no serious opposition to this plan, let's open the official name nomination thread at 4pm forum time or earlier. I may not be home then, anyone can open it. We can go ahead and risk an assumption that England is our chosen civ.

RoboPig
Feb 26, 2005, 02:33 PM
