Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knows if you can play the original Doom (or Ultimate Doom) on XP. I actually never beat the very end back in the day, and it gnaws at me even still.

If nobody knows, could anyone direct me to somewhere where they might know?

I think you can play the original game if you set the windows 95 compatablity mode on. You can do that by right cliking the .exe file of the game and cliking properties from there, there should be a tab called compatability modes (not sure since my windows is finnish in language) and from there set the correct settings to windows 95 compatable mode. You might also need to check the 256 color mode box too. :)

Excellent! I read a lot on the id website about how you needed compatible cards and keyboard/mouse and everything, but I just figured they were covering themselves from liability if somebody couldn't get it to work.

Here's a link to the page I found. (http://www.idsoftware.com/games/doom/doom-ultimate/index.php?game_section=sysreq)

You can also try some of the available upgrades out there to get it to run and look better such as http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

Er, I don't know what that means.

Source port is a modified version of Doom, based on Doom source code. It's not made by Id Software. It gives Doom new features and removes bugs.

Some good source ports are:

Zdoom (http://www.zdoom.org)
Boom (http://www.teamtnt.com)
EDGE (http://edge.sourceforge.net)

Not to go all Keanu on you but: Whoa!

Is that legal? You can just download it for free? Is it the same basic game, or did they change any of the levels/baddies/weapon locations/drops, etc.?

EDIT: Upon further research, it seems that you must first purchase the game, then use one of those sites to mod the game to play on XP. If that understanding is correct, then that is exactly what I was looking for, so much thanks indeed!

Yes, you're right. This is the same basic game. You just need a Doom iwad. The one called Doom.wad

I certainly have and yes you need a copy of the wad files for these to work. I've got Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom, be nice if I could find Hexen and Heretic for cheap... oh I have Doom 3 as well but lets not talk about that

I'll probably get Ultimate Doom since it seems like the easiest to find. Have you also tried the three options Judge Deadd recommended? Can you suggest which is best (or easiest to get up and running)?

Hey I got the Doom Collection or something like that a few days after I started this thread. I has Doom, Doom II and Final Doom, and it runs on XP without any modifications or anything.

Thanks, though.
