View Full Version : Rat-03-Silence on Pangaea
ThERat Mar 08, 2005, 06:13 PM goz8 -Silence is Golden is/was a truly epic game, have a look yourself what you could potentially face. This is a tough game right from the start, surely a cliffhanger, but we would never give up. So, you need to be comfortable on deity, I guess.
Since, this is a pangaea game, I lowered difficulty to DG. If we succeed, deity could be an option next time.
This game is sort of semi-defiant. Rules
1. We may never initiate discussions with AI or start trading. Only if the AI starts to open the dialog box, are we allowed to start trading and haggling.
2. We have the option to boot the AI off our territory, it is not a must, but can be used. However, this means strictly booting only without starting negotiations.
3. We are not allowed to purposely enter enemy territory to get booted in order to start negotiations. If we enter enemy territory and get the boot, we will NOT start negotiations
4. We will never give in to AI demands, but are allowed to make peace, even if it costs us some gold.
5. We are not allowed to use mapstat or open dialog box to check AI's resources etc. I trust members to respect that rules.
6. No embassies established by us, spies are wanted for steals later on
7. Alliances or RoP, trade embargos are allowed.
8. The usual house rules apply, reputation is golden etc.
World size = small
Pangaea = 60% ocean
Barbs = sendentary
Climate, Temperature, Age = Random
Civ = scientific, but to be decided
Opponents = Random
SGL and cultural linked starts = off
AI aggression = Normal
Now, who is daring to join this game? I have 3 spots reserved, though I know these guys are busy. Looking for 6 players in total.
Kaiser_Berger Mar 08, 2005, 07:17 PM Checking in. As far as civs go all the scientific friends seem fine, aside from Sumeria(still playing as them) and Byzantines as the Dromon would be a lot less usefull on Pangea.
Bezhukov Mar 08, 2005, 07:24 PM Russia does well with Panagea, especially larger maps. Not sure how set you are on the "small" parameter.
ThERat Mar 08, 2005, 11:21 PM Russia was my choice as well, so it is set. their UU is powerful, and we might need it badly.

Kaiser_Berger Mar 09, 2005, 12:58 AM Russia sounds good. Cossacks are leader machines, which means we should have no problem having some military might, provided we get that far. Knowing the nature of the variant, we'll end up with horses as far away as iron was in Goz8.
grahamiam Mar 09, 2005, 07:27 AM tagged (not a signup. as explained, signed up for microbe's game already) good luck! hope you fair better in the resource department ;)
Kaiser_Berger Mar 09, 2005, 12:22 PM C seems nice for a food rich start. B also seems acceptable, with the river and nearby luxury.
ThERat Mar 09, 2005, 04:48 PM @KB, thanks for the input, still waiting for some more players to sign up. what's up people? nobody game for this one?
Admiral Kutzov Mar 09, 2005, 09:18 PM too many chickens in the pot right now. I'll join later if you need an idiot sub. If you need a prequel, see gram's prodigal son game. this sounds alot alike. good luck.
ThERat Mar 10, 2005, 08:14 AM ok, to get some more players to join, I started this game with 20 turns

@TheRat: I'm glad that you send this to me.Invitation accepted,I'm in.Silent Cathy,here I am!
But I'm a poor experienced player struggling on DG,could another experienced player join in(Besides Rat and Kaiser-Berger)?
OT: Cathy is pretty but not in CIV.
plarq Mar 11, 2005, 09:33 AM Can we make intial contact with AI?Contact with their units and discuss nothing?

@plarq, what do you mean by initial contact? we are not allowed to ever contact, no initial trading, only if AI wants to. and no purposely getting into their terrotory for getting a boot.
plarq Mar 11, 2005, 09:48 AM Oh,I see.We can meet AIs,but not knowing them,thus our research is delayed.
ThERat Mar 11, 2005, 09:52 AM this is a slightly finetuned version of gozpel8 - silence is golden. it will teach you to never give up, just read that thread
plarq Mar 11, 2005, 10:07 AM Goz8 read,see how wonderful a variant would be!Will play after KB.I'll take the challenge.

Elmarae Mar 13, 2005, 08:18 AM I would like to join in, though I don't know if I am at DG level. I am quite comfortable now playing at Emperor, 3 wins solo (standard random).
ThERat Mar 13, 2005, 08:43 AM @elmarae, ok you're in, but beware this is beyond DG actually since we can't talk...read the instruction carefully before making wrong moves

Elmarae Mar 13, 2005, 10:41 AM Glad to be onboard. I realise that it will be harder than DG. Sometimes the best way to learn to swim is to jump in the deep end.
Kaiser_Berger Mar 14, 2005, 01:46 AM Sorry for holding it up so long, RL is being uncooperative with Civ time right now.
Preturn- We look ok.
IT- Japan chooses to boot us. I take the oppurtunity to trade Myst for Warrior Code and 10g. We can't get the Wheel unfortunately.
T1 2950
Nothing much.
T10 2550
We learn IW, and the rng has seldom been kinder as we have Iron next to St. Petes :beer: Set us to Alphabet so we can get closer to libraries to open up our research.
The position sucks, but I settler Novogorod to claim the spices.
We pop a warrior from a GH and spot a purple warrior. They ignore us so we do the same.
Summary
We need to keep scouting at "meet" more people. No real trading, but we do get lowered research costs out of it. I would settle North into the jungle fairly soon, it will be some fertile land eventually.

we need to be careful and not get too bold, next town must be settled to connect spice town and Moskow via CxxC, this is potential AW and we need to maintain a 3 tils spacing. I suggest spot south of river next to mountain, which would connect Moskow and Novogorod
Kaiser_Berger Mar 14, 2005, 02:45 AM Indeed, I was going to mention something similar. I didn't feel vert comfy sticking the city out that far, but didn't want a city that had a majority of desert that wouldn't even gurantee us the spices. Certainly we need a connection city between them.
ThERat Mar 14, 2005, 02:54 AM http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Rat03-2550.jpg
ok here are some suggestion not being able to look at the bigger picture, red is town #1 in priority IMHO
plarq Mar 14, 2005, 05:03 AM Got it.
Japan chooses to boot us. I take the oppurtunity to trade Myst for Warrior Code and 10g.
Rat,is this allowed?I don't think it's allowed since AI only boot him,no real talkie.
BTW,I need sometime to find a gap in my schedule,2 days at most.
ThERat Mar 14, 2005, 05:13 AM Rat,is this allowed?I don't think it's allowed since AI only boot him,no real talkie we are not allowed to purposely enter enemy territory to get booted and start discussion.
I was my last turn when the AI blocked my path and I had no choice but to enter that territory, that's why I didn't say anything. in future, NO stepping into their territory to initiate things.
Maybe what we should agree on is:
if we enter AI land and get booted, we simply comply, but don't enter the trade screen.
what you all think?
plarq Mar 14, 2005, 05:17 AM Rat:Agreed.If we're allowed to make negotiations like this,we'll end up to be "silent sneakers",which will mean that we're not silent anymore.
ThERat Mar 14, 2005, 05:25 AM ok, will amend the rules on page 1. btw, plarq, do you need a swap with elmarae? actually 10 turns at this level are played very fast
plarq Mar 14, 2005, 05:33 AM Swap is ok.It's ironic that I'd waited impatiantly,now that I have no time to deal with it.
Elmarae Mar 14, 2005, 07:32 AM Okay, I've got it... I'm up in another game as well so give me 24 hours. Though it will be fast not having to check the trade screens every turn or two.
Elmarae Mar 15, 2005, 01:13 AM Preflight
No need to check for trades. :nono:
Happiness okay
Do we want a granary in Moscow?

Found Rostov > Worker
2150 BC

Novgorod > Worker > Worker (maybe change to Barracks and chop the spice forest when the 3 workers are done with the roads.)
Must have misclicked in Moscow, because instead of 10 food there is only 2. I'm against reloading so I lived with the mistake, at least it was on the forest so the granary has 4 extra shields.

IBT:Indian Settler pair out,I cannot say hello.
T1:Indian scout spot Incense and blue border.We need to pump out several archers from St.Pete,or AI will demand and we'll get into hell.The stronger we're,the less AI will demand.
IBT:St.Pete riot,it's not so good for a 4C empire.
T2:We spot Koreans but cannot say hello.
IBT:Carthage settler pair approach Novogrod.Korean want to trade Mas for Myst,Korea is also up Wheel,and has 45g,wines,6 cities including Seoul.I start Archer in St.Pete.
T3:Wheel next turn.I'll research Writing next.
IBT:India want 19g for Wheel,I decline,he's even in tech.5 cities no gold.Korea boots and I don't answer.Wheel->Writing.
T4:3 Horses are in or around Carthage,we'll need a war to claim these.Leptis Minor settled aggressively against Novogrod.
IBT:Moscow Granary->Settler.
T5:Nothing.
T6:No more things interesting.
IBT:Spice is online,lux down.Rostov worker->warrior.
T7:Writing price down,seems Carthage or Korea has Writing.
T8:Nothing
IBT:Japan demands 21g and WAR! :eek: 2 warrior and 1 vet archer are our whole troops.
T9:Best chance is occupy the Mountain near Rostov,and it's possible.or we'll be toast.I MMed St.Pete to build 4t Archers,and change Moscow's Settler for a Spear.
It's 9t.And I stop here for Rat to determine the war.1 archer and 2 warrior,that's the whole troops of Mother Russia,will we stop the Japanese strike?

Our settler is ready to settler next turn. We're hanging in just fine right now. As our number of swords increases, we may be able to attack a bit, not just defend. Lit is going to be in soon, it will be nice to have a library or two to boost research.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Rat03-1250.JPG
ThERat Mar 15, 2005, 04:58 PM seems the initial units have been burned off, nice to see, could we try and pillage that wine near the iron? I hope we will get a leader. a sword army would surely make things easier for attack. I guess we need to raze a town or 2 to get them to ask for peace.
again, KB, please DO NOT go into trading when we get booted. Next time I think we gotta replay turns, this time still ok.
elmarae is up
Kaiser_Berger Mar 15, 2005, 05:50 PM Sorry about the boot trading. When it happened I wasn't thinking it was exploitive, but when I looked back on it I questioned my judgment. Sounds like a firm and easy to understand rule now though, no trading when being booted.

T4 370
The Japanese have just completed the Great Library in Kyoto. Keeping up in tech may not be as hard as we thought :hammer: :evil:
T5 350
Good luck strikes again as the Greeks complete the Great Wall instead of Carthage or Japan.
T6 330
Japan complete SoZ.
Summary
We are average in military against Japan. We might want to think about a quick strike soon, before they get Samurai. It would be nice if we could get Feudalism first and get MDI, but that might be pushing it a bit, and I doubt we'll have the funds sitting around to upgrade all our swords. It would be nice to get Kyoto eventually, as the GL will give us instant tech parity.
plarq Mar 18, 2005, 12:37 AM Samurai?Japan doen't have iron.All we can do is to cut them from Carthage.And we need horse from Carthage.Where's SoZ?We'd have a try on it.
Kaiser_Berger Mar 18, 2005, 03:15 AM I think Carthage has two hooked up, and I think that Japan might be getting some. We can't really check, but I find its a good rule of thumb to assume that an AI will find a way to get those pesky resources, as they always do somehow. SoZ is in Tokyo, IIRC. A bit off the beaten path, but if we get rolling it would be a nice target.
ThERat Mar 18, 2005, 05:09 AM I looked at the save and the Japanese have Sapporo far north with iron. I suggest we better strike them faster before they have pikes, use a stack of swords.

plarq Mar 19, 2005, 10:16 PM Japan demands we move from their territory. We declare war.
Oh my god!You trashed our ROP reputation!
plarq Mar 19, 2005, 10:19 PM You could have attack their units from OUR territory.Which is described by gozpel "No talkie,only guns."
Anyway,got it.
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 12:10 AM well, our rep is now sort of trashed, gpt deal might be impossible, makes it even harder, better way would have been to attack from our territory before moving in. let's hope it will still be alright
Elmarae Mar 20, 2005, 12:12 AM It was the only way I could declare war, I couldn't open negotiations with them to start a war, we are silent. If I did wrong then I'm sorry.
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 12:13 AM one more thing, please NO min research ever in this game. we need to treat is as AW since techs won't be traded easily.
only once we can steal, then we can go for 0% research, as for now, max and I suggest max gunpowder
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 12:16 AM @elmarae, if there was no other way, it was ok, that's the nature of silence, nothing wrong with that, I would have abandoned that Jap town, it is a high flip risk and not connect to our empire, very hard to hold
plarq Mar 20, 2005, 01:24 AM Begin:MM to get more gold.Start Engineering with deficit.
IBT:lose redlined MDI to Acav,Moscow MDI->Settler,Vladivostok War->Warrior.(0/1)
T1:Build Orenburg on spot.MDI flawlessly retreat AC.
IBT:Lose MDI to MDI(0/1)
T2:Kill AC,lose MDI,Kagoshima is under threat.We can't use Cats in jungle,that's too bad.(1/1)
IBT:Spear lost,Pikemen lost,Kagoshima citizen uprised.(0/2)(city lose 1)
T3:Several border expansions.
IBT:Moscow Settler->Pike.Peters MDI->MDI.
T4:4 Jap Units knocking at the door of Orenburg.I'm sorry but Orenburg just not on right place.Jungle's killing us.I think we must retreat to Petersburg.Doubt if we can really hold St.Petes.So hard.I abandon Orenburg and retreat to St.Petes.I guess Samurai and ACav will end our history.(city lose 1)
IBT:LB not Samurai show up in Jap stacks.Phew...Lose a sword.(0/1)
T5:Nothing,but look at Jap SoD in awe.2 archer,2 lB,and 3MDI.
IBT:Build wall in St.Pete.Start more pikes.Hell,Japan start KT,which means Samurai on-the-way.
T6:Cats goes 2/4 on SoD.Then straight 7-0 kill Nipponese SoD!!!Well RnG is on our side right now.(7/0)
IBT:Lose sword and pike to Jap.(0/2)
T7:Healing and building.With all these slow movers,I can't expect a better outcome from Jap.
IBT:Korean demands->War.Koreans and Carthage starts Sistine.
T8:War happiness gain 10gpt.
IBT:Carthage demands->War.Now it's really ugly.Japan lands a Samurai near Yaroslav',we're losing in every front.Size 5 Yaroslav will fall.Guess Cathy faces her destiny.
T9:Kill Jap LB
IBT:Lose Yaroslav'.Carthage run through our territory.Vladivostok going to fall.
T10:Good luck never strikes again.Now all troops cannot match Jap and Carthage,I'd say we lost already.
Summary:I don't know why our fronts fall as autumn leaves.But the aggression on Japan seems to be a tragedy.We just can't hold the front without cats in jungle.After Kagoshima disaster hope is gone.Even a 7-0 counterstike cannot rewrite our history.And the AW-like variant makes minor mistake unchangable.Demands from Carthage just add insult to injury.
We're lost:N to St.Pete. is 5 LB/MDI stack,N to Novogrod is 5 Sword/NM stack,S to Vladivostok is 2 Sword/LB stack.And our whole troops are several MDI and Pikes.
I don't know who's responsible for the defeat.Me?Elmarae?RnG?Or anything else?I guess it's hard to beat an AW like game without Horses.
Should we play another Silent Game?Or should we start training AWM?
The map is the last glance of crippled Mother Russia.
I'm really sorry team,but the cruel truth showed its ugly face in our game again.
plarq Mar 20, 2005, 01:35 AM The Save is here.Should we abstain and replay some turns to get some ideas from this game?
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 04:16 AM well, I think that the war against Japan was pretty premature. we had no real stack of units to fight them and regain peace fast. opening the save I saw a few stray units, thats the way I fought wars long time ago unsuccessfully in Civ.
Kagoshima should have been just razed.
Never mind, the land wasn't really in our favor, we could try silence on emperor level again. Waiting for more input first
edit: the front line versus 2 Civs is also a bit hard.
Kaiser_Berger Mar 20, 2005, 05:45 AM This does look fairly tough to defend, probably is our end. I think another try would be in hand, but I think emperor may be a bit too easy. With a decent start we could probably outresearch our competition and make the silence not as big of an issue. I think another go on demigod would be in order, but will go with whatever the team thinks. Demigod can be done, it just requires careful play.
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 06:17 AM agree with KB, we could do it on DG, but this time more careful play and maybe better starting location.
first, before starting a new link, need to know who is in for this:

plarq? please confirm
elmarae - in for replay?
dl123654? still keen?
Elmarae Mar 20, 2005, 09:33 AM Sure I'll join in the replay. Hopefully I have learnt my lesson about starting a war half cocked.
I take most of the blame for our loss. I started a war with an opponent with barely enough force to take one town let alone defend against the counter attack.
I'll be more careful next time.
dl123654 Mar 20, 2005, 07:31 PM I'm up for another, put me near the end of the roster so I can play when my computer gets back.
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 07:39 PM ok then, will start another thread tonight, same conditions?
maybe we need a Civ with an earlier UU? but it must be a scientific Civ. Any suggestions.
I leave the rest as it is, pangaea etc. Hopefully a better start this time (not crammed between jungle and tundra) ;)
plarq Mar 20, 2005, 07:41 PM I'll replay in Demigod.Edit:I guess this time we go Sumeria or Babylon or Greeks.
Kaiser_Berger Mar 20, 2005, 09:52 PM Greeks certainly would keep us from being overrun early on. Perhaps our early survival in Goz8 could be attributed to the cheap defense of the Enkidu. A few elite Hoplites equals near invincibility in the ancient age. As for starting wars, I think we need to take an AW approach to our wars, because once we start we're in them until we are talked to. We just need more caution overall, I think. Alright, enough of my random thoughts, lets get the next one started.
ThERat Mar 20, 2005, 10:41 PM ok, Greece it is, never played them once myself actually.
Will roll and start tonight, play 20 turns and post (and make sure it's not a crappy location)
ThERat Mar 21, 2005, 10:01 AM created an new thread under Rat04 - silent Greeks
