View Full Version : INFO CivStats - Excel file with Civ Data
Nero Would Dec 08, 2001, 01:20 PM I like to have as much information as possible on a few sheets of paper rather than having to keep looking it up on various screens. CivStats is an Excel 2000/Excel 97 file that contains data from the rules file (civ3mod.bic).
Version 1.16 matched the 1.16 patch. It contained: Tech Tree
Unit Tree (unit stats in tech tree format)
Unit stats in table format
Improvements and Wonders table
Terrain, Resources and Worker Jobs table
Civ and Gevernment table
Notes on how the game calculates various thingsVersion 1.16 was downloaded 2947 times.
Version 1.17 adds: Updates to match the 2nd patch (CivIII version 1.17f)
List of Hotkeys
"Rules" section now includes a table of years per turnVersion 1.17 was downloaded 64 times.
Version 1.17.2 adds: Unit table updated to match the updated version of patch 1.17f released by Firaxis on 15 Feb. The only change was to restrict Barbarians to Warriers, Horsemen and Galleys (the original version of the patch had allowed all units to barbarians, allowing you to get advanced units from goody huts).
Added arrows to Unit Tree to show upgrade path to civ unique units.1.17.2 was downloaded 403 times.
Version 1.21 adds: Updates to match the 3rd patch (CivIII version 1.21f)
Moved some units in the unit tree to better show their position in the tech tree
Corrected the calculation of City Centre Tile production.
The_Newbie Dec 10, 2001, 03:42 PM Are you the same Nero Would from Pharoah heaven?

That's me (but don't tell Impressions that I'm playing Civ III).
Thunderfall Dec 11, 2001, 11:52 PM Thanks for making this very helpful file. :goodjob:
Aryx Dec 12, 2001, 04:57 AM I adore people who take their time to produce such info overviews, but I would really like it more print friendly... Papers in the knee is much better than tabbing...
ChrisShaffer Dec 12, 2001, 09:26 AM I would like to see the tech tree expanded to show the base cost for each technology.
LoneWolf5050 Dec 12, 2001, 10:10 AM Tons of info there, cool.
So, does being fortified really give a 25% bonus, no matter where the unit is? I thought it only gave a bonus if you were in a city. Can someone say for sure and give a source for the info?
Thanks,

Cosine Dec 12, 2001, 11:58 AM This is way too cool, I have been thinking about doing this myself but due to lack of time(mostly cause I play the game way too much) I was unable to do so.
Quick Questions:
On the civilizations page: What does the colomn agg-res mean?
On the civilizations page: How do shunned/Preferred governments affect game play?
Thats pretty much it for now...I'll be sure to edit if I need more help....Thanks Dude this is great stuff
:enlighten:
dpreviti Dec 12, 2001, 12:52 PM Nero,
Great file. I made two real quick alterations though. I added hyperlinks from the first (read me) page. so the document is clickable. And I had to widen the page on the tech tree cause it was pringint three extra pages.
Great Job! in all though. If you want my version email mail me, and I'll send it to you.

tatterdemalion Dec 12, 2001, 02:02 PM I really appreciate the effort you put into the table. It is very helpful. I think that anyone who makes a mod should take this table, update it to correspond to their mod and include it with the mod.
BTW, I see that you need a 'victorious army' in order to build a military academy. How do you get a victorious army. My army has defeated many opponents, but I do not get the option to build the academy.
Asaris Dec 12, 2001, 03:36 PM You also need Military Tradition, I believe
MummyMan Dec 12, 2001, 03:46 PM The cheapskates at Dell gave me Windows:ME without Excel. Can i still download the file? Is there a way that I could download Excel so could use the file?
dpmUK Dec 12, 2001, 06:50 PM MummyMan,
You can download Excel viewer from http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx which will allow you to view and print Excel files. As far as I'm aware there is no way of downloading Excel itself without breaking copyright laws!
PS. This is my first ever post on this forum!
Hoqq Dec 13, 2001, 10:33 AM One way is that excel-viewer mentioned above.
If you need some excel-like stuff anyway, you may download Staroffice (for free!): http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0beta/get.html
Btw: great work, Nero Would!
Nero Would Dec 14, 2001, 01:06 AM Thanks for the kind comments everyone!
Aryx: I tried to be as printer-friendly as I could. On the two systems I have printed from, each of the tables fits (just) on a single 8.5 x 11 inch page except the Tech Tree (which takes one page per era). Unfortunately, what just fits on a page with one print driver may not fit with another, but if you play with the settings in the File|Page Setup menu, you should be able to get them to fit.
Chris Shaffer: I show what the editor calls the "cost in shields" at the top right of each box in the Tech Tree. The formula in the box next to the Key shows how to convert that into the amount of gold you need. Are you saying you think it would be better if the number in the top right of each box was the cost in gold in (say) a standard world when no other civs have the advance? That probably would be better (especially for people like me who play on a standard size world).
LoneWolf5050: No, I can't say for sure that units get the 25% bonus when fortified outside a city. I'm assuming they do because the editor says that is the bonus for being fortified, and I haven't seen anything that says "only in cities". I could be wrong though. Unfortunately, it's hard to test any theory about combat odds because the test would have to be a statistical analysis of a very large number of combat results (more than I have the patience for, I'm afraid).
Cosine: The column in the Civs table labeled Agg-res is the aggressiveness of the civ when played by the AI (-2 is the least aggressive, +2 is the most aggressive). I'm not sure how the preferred and shunned governments affect gameplay. I assume the AI is more likely to adopt the "preferred" and less likely to adopt the "shunned", but I don't know if it affects their attitude to other civs with those governments.
dpreviti: Yes, I would appreciate it if you would e-Mail me your update, thank you! It would help if you could tell me what kind of printer you have and what size paper (e.g. 8.5 x 11 or A4). I would like to try to make it so that everyone can get the table to fit on a page.
Cosine Dec 14, 2001, 08:54 AM
Thanks NW, you're the best!
Grey Fox Jan 28, 2002, 03:46 PM Can anyone post a good example on how to calculate the cost to research a tech!?
First you multiply the cost by the % of civs that do not have the tech. That's 100 in the beginning? Right?
If I research Ceremonial Burial that's 200 (2*100).
Then multiply by rate for your size world.
Let's say Large... thats 36. (36*200= 7200)
7200 can't be the cost for the tech, right?
So what am I doing wrong?
dpmUK Jan 28, 2002, 04:25 PM Just a gues, have you tried multiplying by the percentage as a decimal, i.e. times by 1 for 100% and 0.5 for 50%, this seems to give more realistic figures.
Nero Would Jan 29, 2002, 09:58 AM dpmUK is correct. I probably should have worded it better, but the percentage is meant to be a fraction, so 100% is 1.00, 50% is 0.50, and so on.
So in a large world where no civs have Ceremonial Burial, it should cost 2 * 1.00 * 36 = 72 gold
Grey Fox Jan 29, 2002, 12:41 PM :D Yea I figured out that, a minute after I posted, but my net went down so I could'nt edit my post in time...
Nero Would Feb 15, 2002, 09:49 PM I updated the file to match the 1.17 patch and add a list of hotkeys and table of turns per year. See the first post for the new file.
Nero Would Feb 21, 2002, 12:18 PM I've changed the file to match the updated version of the 1.17f patch released by Firaxis on 15 Feb. The only change to the BIC file from the patch released on 14 Feb was restricting Barbarians to Warriers, Horsemen and Galleys.
I also added arrows to the Unit Tree to show the upgrade path to civ unique units.
chiefpaco Mar 25, 2002, 01:08 PM From Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS over at Apolyton:
All civs get a +1 bonus when a town becomes a city.
When it becomes a metropolis, however, industrial and commercial civs get an additional +2 while other civs only get an additional +1.
Not sure if you're still into keeping everything up-to-date, but I thought I'd mention.
Nero Would May 05, 2002, 10:38 AM Version 1.21 adds: Updates to match the 3rd patch (CivIII version 1.21f)
Moved some units in the unit tree to better show their position in the tech tree
Corrected the calculation of City Centre Tile production.
chiefpaco: Thanks for pointing out the problem with my City Centre Tile production.
kring Aug 27, 2002, 10:49 AM Will this be updated to 1.29f patch?
