I am doing a small mod/scenario from the Byzantine reconquest up to the crowning of the holy roman emperor, about 532 to 800. Main players will be
Byzantium, Franks, and of course the Moslems. Rounding out the map will be some invading barbarians, the barbarian kingdoms in the west, the sassanids, and perhaps even a viking or two near the end.

I have gone through the forums and made a folder of appropriate units but I would like some suggestions on byzantine ones. So far I have the cataphract for the clibarnarii and a pole slinger that can be used as a ranged unit. Also the scutatoi (sp?) I will use as a defensive unit, so basically I am looking for an offensive foot unit. Would it be too far removed from reality to use one of the later legionnaires, as there are several models to choose from?

I would appreciate input from anyone familiar with the period or who knows of an appropriate unit to use.

Closer to 800 IIRC axemen would be more accurate than swordsmen (try the Berserker unit ... ?). Axemen opposed Roger the Norman's invasion (admittedly late 11th century) but the Varangian Guard et. al. were undoubtedly familiar with the ax.

I think your best bet is with Utah's and DomPedro units. Try the unit thread in my sig as well. R8XFT is making some units as well, monitor his threads, seems like it is a possibility you'll find some units there.

I am indeed - the best thread you can look out for is the Anno Domini thread - the civs you mentioned in your mod are in mine as well :) .
