[EDIT] An accidental revolution caused a crushing defeat by way of Germans, but I will start again with a new map for my revenge.

OK.....third time's the charm. Here we go again.

SETTINGS:

Difficulty- Regent, AI aggression is set to Normal.
World- Warm, wet (I think) Continents 70%
Opponents- Random except for Germans. I must have my revenge.

My first (Ok, second) story, and I'm not a very good writer at all. So please don't flame. Constructive/helpful comments and critique is encouraged, though, I need all the help I can get.

Chapter One

Mao, his most trusted advisors, and a few thousand of his people, having escaped the clutches of the evil Germans, settle in a fertile valley in a land far, far away. The city of New Beijing is founded, although after a few years the residents begin to call it simply Beijing to remind them of their comfortable home years ago. The people begin to work the land, cultivating it for agriculture and mining. Warriors are sent west to investigate the surrounding land. The brave warriors stumble upon a barbarian encampment, and, seeing opportunity, talk the primitive barbarians into joining the Great Chinese Empire.

The barbarians are organized by the warriors, sent westward, and settled in a glorious new city called... Shanghai.

The warrior group continues west, then south, scouting and finding a land bridge holding the Chinese continent to another. On this continent resides an ugly but agreeable fellow named Temujin and his ugly but agreeable people, the Mongols.

Back in China

Mao is perplexed: this is going too well. Normally by this time of the game he would have been savaged by barbarian hordes, cut down by angry peasants, or stunted by endless stretches of desert. Now, though, he has been blessed with a truly beautiful start. Mao would not be surprised at all if he was also blessed with a native source of Iron and possibly some Horses.

*BOOM*

Mao: General, must you insist on always opening the door like that?

General Szu: Sorry, my lord. I just came to tell you the super duper great news. It seems our warriors have discovered some barbarians!

Mao: Ok.....

General Szu: Ah, yeah. That's the good news.

Mao: Call me stupid, but somehow I'm failing to see how this is good.

General Szu: Ah, right. Sorry, sir. The barbarians are friendly, sir, and they've joined our great nation! They've formed a new city under the direction of our warriors. They're building a barracks as we speak, sir, so we can train our glorious armies!

Mao: Excellent, now we can use our next settler for those silks in the north. We'll be TWO cities up on the AI instead of one!!

General Szu is confused. What is Mao talking about? What the hell is an AI? What's silk? How does Mao know about it? And what's he mean, two cities up? And will Mao ever share Szu's love?

General Szu: Ah, sure...precisely what I was thinking, my lord. I'll just go....

Meanwhile, back in the wild green yonder, the warriors sent out by Szu are heading south. They have already met the Mongols, but the scout coming towards them doesn't bear the same colored clothing that the Mongol scouts do.......

Captain Shia, leader of the southern warrior division, captures the unwitting scout, massacres his escort, and drags the scout and his leader, Mursilis, off to Beijing.

China, two months later

*BOOM*

Captain Shia: Mao! We have captured foreign ambassadors! The leader of the Hittites and his poorly-groomed sidekick!

Mao: Very well.... bring him in.

Mursilis: What the hell is this? I was just taking a nice tour of the countryside, spitting on a few serfs, when all of a sudden your loud friend here kills my escort, knocks me out with a backslap, and drags me out here! I demand an explanation!

Mao: Now, now. I'm sure it wasn't so bad..

Captain Shia: Actually, he did scream like a little wussy when I slapped him.

Mao: Is that so... But anyway, Mursilis, I'm sure we can strike a deal. I'm a reasonable man. Hows about we trade technology....

China, a couple hundred years later

Mao is satisfied. The Mongols seem to like him, his technology pace is decent, and his military matches that of all the other known civilizations of th e world. However, Mao is falling behind a bit, and he realizes that he must keep up with the AIs this time. Mao orders the construction of a great learning institution in Shanghai where all the most learned Chinese scholars will collect their knowledge and learn the arts of other nations. Meanwhile, many other cities have been built, and Mao now has possession of wines, silks, and gems to keep his growing population happy. Additionally, there appears to be a source of iron to the north that will soon become his. Things are going well.

Despite all these good things, Mao knows that he has, yet again, a dillemma. What should he do? The city of Shanghai is gathering workers and preparing raw materials for the Great Library. Mao understands that this tactic, called "pre-building" by the ancient war-horses of his trade, will give him an advantage to building his Great Library once his shamans become literate.

China, many years later

*BOOM*

Lu Pang, Foreign Advisor: Master!

Mao: DAMNIT! What is it with you people? Must you slam the door every time?

Lu Pang: Very sorry, master. I only came to talk to you about the Great Library. I know it's not my branch of expertise, but I think we have an opportunity. The Great Library will be done much more quickly if we revolt to a representative-based government. The only available government of this type is Tribal Council, which sounds primitive but is quite effective. Trust me sir, it might take a few turns, but when the nation comes back under control it'll be well worth it.

Mao: That's the most intelligent thing I've heard any of my advisors say. Very well....bring me a map showing all our cities. I want to see my lands before we do this thing.

I see your sci counter is at 50/50 science/tax, try to milk that to see how much money or time you could save. Could we see a picture of the land you can progress into? I can't see anything atm but I'd probably say you'd need to try to box in the Germans. I've never liked the Germans.... althought i've never liked the Chinese either lol

edit: my bad, was posting as you were posting. I'd keep pumping out settlers, maybe even focusing on it however that owuld leave you slightly open to the Germans....

you need to look at what you're building. unless you're going for a 100k culture win you won't need libraries, temples and the like in everyone of your cities. personally until i'd stopped settling the land I'd build a barracks in maybe 1 or 2 cities and use the other cities to build settlers and stuff. someone can confirm or deny this, but the shields you use to build temples in all your cities could go to settlers or defence against the Mongolians and believe me when I say they will not think twice about picking off a weak neighbour

good luck
