nah...just kidding but does anybody here play the game?

The sound on it is amazing!

I played it for a couple of hours when it first came out. Jumped once, got bored, stopped playing. Did have a good atmosphere though.

Yep, good for a couple of hours, too boring to finish.

When I first played it I was sitting in a dark room using head phones. Bad idea. Very bad. When this body fell from the ceiling I screamed like a girl and fell off the chair.

Doom 3 is...... really terrifying!!! The number of times something just jumps out at you is mind boggling. Some people may say that the game depends on cheap scares but I say if they work, why not?

My problem with Doom 3 is that the darkness can get really irritating at times. Especially since I sit facing out the window when using my computer, it gets really hard to see in the afternoon when the sun shines in.

The first time an Imp jumped at me as soon as I opened a door I almost crapped myself, then shortly after having one come flying at you from under the stairs. Man literally yelled out loud (which I have never done during a game before).

Doom 3 is nowhere near as scary as Resident Evil 4. Book it. :hammer:

Good atmosphere, but I'm pretty much totally immune to fear these days.

When I first reached the end of Episode 1 in Doom 1, went up that final elevator, and those two Demon Lords gave a discordant howl that literally made me jump out of my chair--at that point I quickly began to develop an immunity to scary games. :)

I know that howl all too well. Just played it last week. :)

How does Doom 3's layout compare with the original Doom's? Do you still have the mugshot and ammo cound on the bottom bar? Any new guns? New monsters; old favorites?

I love Doom 3. I got the expansion when it came out 2 weeks ago. Doom 3 is a long game and evil/creepy/fun. The expansion is more about gameplay, but is too short.

Doom3, really nice game. Few frustrating parts and imps behind every door to jump on you is kind of annoying, but still game is very entertaining. To be honest, I liked it more than HL2. And because it deals with hell, it just fascinates me.

Somehow Doom3 doesn't scare me that much. It's sometimes a bit freaky though.

But the thing I like the most is the details. Like the hand that's reaching out for you through a crack in the door. And then there's a point where it gets hairy and once you eliminated all the enemies heavily wounded there's an evil laughter in the background. That's just so cool!!!

So far I have experienced the most fear when playing the campaign as Marine in Alien vs Predator. The first couple of times I played Doom against other humans comes in second. :)

No mugshot. Sometimes the ammo count is on-screen in the corner, but with most weapons it's on the gun itself. All your favorite Doom 1 weapons are there, plus a few new ones. And with the possible exception of grenades, they all work. The rocket launcher remains a highly-effective favorite--looks great, sounds great, hits HARD. Even loading a new five-pack of boomsticks into the thing sounds good. :)

Most of your monsters from Doom 1 and Doom 2 are here also, minus the Pain Elemental, and the bosses are different. No amped-up-chaingun-spider-bot this time.

But there's something about the level design and the general placement of monsters that's....I dunno how, but it just doesn't have the same feel to it. The sense of inevitable doom, so to speak, isn't there.

A team is redoing Doom 1 for the Doom 3 engine. It suffers in that it is too dark, imo, but wow...it is still very intense.

Thanks for the information. I've been wondering whether or not to buy this game. I enjoyed Dooms I and II. If I do buy it, I fear that the whole time I'd be hoping that my computer wouldn't explode!

Got to say rather heavy engine there. I can run HL2 with 1024 and good resos, but Doom slows down at 800X600 and medium resos. Well I guess lights takes the most power.

And slightly off-topic: Movie what is slightly based on Doom will be released at this year. I guess somewhere after summer.

They are taking "creative liberties" and changing the demons to *aliens.* :shakehead :vomit: :suicide: . I really liked the doom story, so this is infinitely lame to me.

Ever since I heard of it, I've wondered how they could make Doom a movie. No demons? Awww...

The Doom movie is not on Mars, does not involve Marines, and does not involve Hell. I don't think it should be called Doom. :(

Any last minute tips before I buy? I had it in my hands yesterday but knew that I would have no time then. My only fear is that it'll be extremely choppy and slow. I compared its system requirements to the Medal of Honor series that I have and they all seem to be less.

MoHAA is pretty old by computer tech standard. Have at least 512RAM, and it looks pretty good on ati 9600. 1GB RAM and nVidia 6600gt is preferred though. there's a demo out now, so you should probably try that first if you doubt your system.

I just tell you RegentMan, Doom 3 is heavy! I have 2Ghz processor, 9800 Radeon and 512Mb ram it's still slow at 800X600. So if you have decent machine, IMO Doom3 isn't so bad purchase.

Sigh... three disks? I immediately knew that it wouldn't turn out successful. Prior to installation, the program told me that I do not have enough RAM to properly play Doom 3. I thought that it probably wouldn't work, but I went ahead anyway. After installation, I started up the game and got an error message in the console stating that openGL failed to initialize. I have an Intel 82810E Graphics card (I believe). Any tips for fixing openGL/acquiring more RAM?

By the by, all that computer talk makes no sense to me. I am nearly completely computer-talk-challenged.

I'm not really an expert, but Doom 3 is probably the most graphically demanding game out there. My guess is you need a new computer...

Apr 21, 2005, 04:15 AM
Tell me RegentMan, if you know, is that integrated graphic card? If it is, I'm not wondering at all if it won't work. Perhaps solution is to buy "real" graphic card.

Acquiring more RAM? Yes there's one way, buy more.

Sorry but that's the trend nowdays, buy buy buy :(

$78 (US) at NewEgg.com, it should be enough to handle Doom3 and is well-reviewed:

(since it sounds like you've got embedded video on your motherboard right now, like I used to before I got the above video card)

Doom 3 is hand down the scariest game I've ever played.
You need to put yourself in the atmosfear, wait the night, shut off the lights, use good sound (maybe a headphone) quite loud, and PLAY ALONE.
Let yourself immerse into the game, try to forget that it's a game, and let sink into the thing.

With this, I had a real trip to Hell. Only game I had to make pause after some hours, just because my nerves were too tense. It's definitely worth it.

Yea I can only play it for about an hour, hour and a half before I got to take a break. It frazzles my nerves, but it is definately one of the best games I've ever played.

Oh, trust me, once you've played the first level half through, you'll see the very meaning of "doom". ;)

Doom is one of the most demanding games out there, but if its too slow you can shut of shadows and such
