View Full Version : Star Wars Rebellion
Mordack Apr 27, 2005, 08:00 PM As promised - opened this to continue discussion from the Mobile SAM thread
Other than Civ, I have spent more hours playing this game than all of the others I have had combined
The name Jerjerrod sparked a memory - I believe he was one of the few Empire characters with high diplomacy
good news - I found my original CD and will be re-installing shortly
can't wait to play again, think I will use the Rebellion first - I remember liking them better
CivGeneral Apr 27, 2005, 08:06 PM This thread should realy belong in other games.
Warman17 Apr 27, 2005, 08:16 PM I just started to replay this game just a few days ago O_O
It's about day 650 as the empire and i just finsihed a new death star :satan:
but this should be in Other Games
JohnRM Apr 27, 2005, 09:03 PM Lol...I still have my disc too...Havent played it recently. The game is too easy to beat. Once the enemy takes over a planet that supports you, you go and take it back with drastically improves support among the entire region, etc etc etc...TOO EZ
Moff Jerjerrod Apr 27, 2005, 09:09 PM Yes, hopefully a mod will notice.
Now to answer vmxa about my sincerity about liking Rebellion.
I've heard all the arguements from players and magazines, etc. They all knock the game down.
They are all missing the point. Are they not true Star Wars fans? Star Wars Rebellion was the first and only strategy game that let you recreate the star wars universe and play it like civ. Yes it's real time but it's not a clickfest unless you are playing against a human who doesn't want to pause the game from time to time. Anyway as a fan who loves Star Wars (not the new craptactular episodes but the original trilogy) I accept that Rebellion is the only pure strategy game set in the Star Wars universe. Perhaps it is flawed but it's all we have.
I wish that they would make a new version of this game but it will probably never happen which is too bad.
Anyway I usually pick the Empire. I always thought that they had the cooler weapons, you know, like TIE fighters, Stormtroopers, Star Destroyers. You get the point..... :)
Warman17 Apr 27, 2005, 09:11 PM Luckily Star Wars: Empire at War is coming out soon. opefully it will bebetter, it sure looks like it. Gamespot gave rebellions a 4.5 haha. I'd give it a 7.5 ^_^
FriendlyFire Apr 28, 2005, 03:26 AM Great game
Horrid AI
Fun but shallow game
Margim Apr 28, 2005, 06:56 AM Yeah, good clean fun... although the tactical component could have been developed to more than 'I have the bigger fleet'
Mordack Apr 28, 2005, 07:23 AM sorry about the other game thing - did not know about this forum - glad to see it was moved quickly

right on brother :goodjob: the closest thing to a turn-based strategy game ever released for the Star Wars genre

I liked playing as the rebellion
1) more diplomats
2) ability to move HQ
3) The "Luke" storyline was always a challenge for me
4) half travel time with Han Solo - that guy was a madman on sabotage missions
5) simply liked the diverisity of the rebel capital ships available
6) all fighters had hyperdrive
Empire was a good diversion - nothing beats popping up in a rebel controlled system with the Death Star
One thing that I really hated about the Empire was the fighters - you really didn't have a viable fleet based fighter until Defenders were available.

'Twas even more fun with an interdictor cruiser and a pack of fighters - nowhere to run, fighters defend the star, while you gradually zap an entire fleet out of existance.
Loved hearing the imperial march resound as helpless rebel planets were either conquered or destroyed even as I ruthlesely pounded the life out of others with orbital bombardments mwuhahahaha... erm... yes. Those were the days :)
Mahler Apr 28, 2005, 09:22 AM In multiplayer, Rebellion is an endless game if players have equal skills. I had played it for about 200 hours and nobody won :)

Having more characters with diplomatic ability is a huge advantage. Despite the Empires scant diplomatic resources I would engage in diplomacy with my non diplomatic characters. This required patience but eventually they'd get enough successes to slightly boost their diplo skills. When the main diplo characters were done with a planet they would go help out the weaker diplo characters. Tedious but fun for me!
Empire's lack of hyperdrive fighters and the fact that it takes about 3 or 4 ties to take on an xwing effectively captures the opposing fighter doctrines beautifully. Loved it!
Hunting for the rebel hq was always a challenge but that's what scores of probots and imperial spy droids are for.

That had to have been fun. A titanic struggle, just what I like!
Warman17 Apr 28, 2005, 07:05 PM Just took my death star and blew up the planet with the capital. Nice game, took about 1100 days.
The funniest thing is to take a death star and blow up coruscant with darth vader and the emperor on it. Thats what Grand Moff Tarkin would have done, but of course the game makes you lose instead of becoming Emperor.

never tried this, but will next time I use the Empire

that's true - and Empire fighters are much cheaper to build - I just hate waiting for all of them to deploy from their carriers. you typically lose 1 or 2 squadrons before they can fully deploy
Currently playing with Rebellion - in turn 200 or so the Empire assasinated Wedge
vmxa May 04, 2005, 10:02 AM Moff Jerjerrod, I am glad you liked it, really. I wanted to like it as well as I love space games such as Moo/Space Empires and many others going way back to Alien Legacy.
I tried many times and could not get past the tutorial. I gave it to friends, who all liked the 10 year Moo, and they gave it back, saying it sucked. I finally tossed it after three others gave it back.
In two other forums over the years, this game constantly shows up on the list of worse games, that suggest something may be wrong with it.
Moff Jerjerrod May 04, 2005, 02:56 PM I can understand what you're saying vmxa.
I'm sorry the game wasn't too well received. It was Lucasarts first attempt at a hardcore strat game. They didn't do too well and decided to never venture into that arena again. It's too bad because I want a real strat game based on the SW universe, not some lame clickfest like they're making these days.
vmxa May 04, 2005, 03:38 PM Yeah I think many others were hoping for the a great game. In a way, that is a kiss of death. Sort of like movies. The more expectations I have for the movie, the more likely I am to be disappointed. I have actually enjoyed more movies, when I expected them to be bad and so they had a low threshold to rise above.
