View Full Version : Own's (pathetic) Attempt at Sid Always War

Okay, my first pathetic excuse for an "attempt" at a story game was a failure. But I promise to stick to this one. I am on an archipelago map (small) as the Byzantines. I was foolish and did 70% water (do'h) and now no AI civ is isolated  . I did edit the dromon to give it lethal land like in version 1.00, but, while I was in the editor, I couldn't help but add 1 movement point, 1 range, and 2 more bombard to the dromon. I know I'm a wuss, but I tried not to, but I just did. But hey, I can't even beat Deity, and I'm doing Sid Always War, so I gotta cut me some slack. I also gave myself saltpeter :mischief: and one more cow by Constantinople.

In this game, I will use some (correction: all) of Handy900's and Arathorns strategies, so if by some miracle I win, they deserve the credit, not me.

This story starts rather late, because I didn't expect to do so well.

Here is my island:

Here is a roadless civ:

Now that I'm starting the story, I take a deep breath instead of playing turns mindlessly, aimlessly, and without a goal. America, being ironless is my first target. I have the Great Library, but America has been researching towards education only, didn't even get engineering. That really sucks, and Japan is one tech away from education, so I may never even get invention. Oh boy would that suck. I'd have to research myself to gunpowder. Egypt was behind, but because of recent switch to republic (only republic in game), Egypt is researching towards gunpowder very fast (Egypt has lots of land I couldn't hit, so my dromons didn't affect them much). I just pray that Japan chooses that path before education.

I welcome tips from anyone, as I have barely any idea of what I'm doing. Don't feel guilty giving me advice, I need every tidbit of advice I can get.

Wish me luck! :D

You need to either A: Upload them to the CIvFanatic's Upload Center or B: Uplaod them somewhere else.

Where is Civfanatics Upload Center?

Go all the way to the bottom of the screen. Click the button that says "Upload File."

 I only got to invention before the GL became oblelete. Now I have to research gundpowder at minimal 26 turns, while losing 58 per turn :wallbash: . I can build libraries but they won't help much. They may save me a couple turns. America, my first target, is 2 techs away from longbowmen, so I hope that I can get gunpowder before they get invention.

I'm researching gunpowder, after cash rushing libraries and universities in productive cities. I decided to let my cities go into disorder by putting in 100% science, taking away my needed luxury tax. All I lose is an occasional improvement and 10 gold from wealth. The AI has succesfully gotten a couple of sea attacks on me, both which were either killed or wounded by dromons. I'm 2 turns from gunpowder, and the date is 1220 AD. America still dosne't have engineering, so I no longer have to worry about longbowmans. I recently disbanded about 20 unneeded dromons. Does anyone want to try this out and see if you can do better than me (not very hard)? If so, tell me how to post saves.

Unfortunatly, America got invention, so my new target is the Mongols, also ironless. But, the Mongols are small, so it won't be as "rewarding" if I kill them. My current goal is to conquer at least one AI civ, then the next, then the next. After Mongolia, if I didn't manage to get astronomy, I'll attack Japan, (land connected) so I can get armies over there. That's all I'm thinking ahead.

I'll get a screenshot soon. I promise

When I unloaded my huge attack force on the only Mongolian hill, I noticed that the hill was next to the capital  . Oh well, I'll just have to raze :p . It seems like everything has gone wrong this game, well, that's sid for ya.

Own, you have posted the images as windows bitmap. Have you an idea of their size? There are 5 bitmap, over than 2 megabytes each. Over 10 MB of graphics in a single html page. It's slow even with a broadband. With a slow connection, it will take forever to load those pics (and probably the user will curse at you for hogging the connection).

Please post the pictures as jpg. Even the lame MS paint can save them in that format, and the size is about 1/20 of a bitmap, tipycally 100-150 kb each image.

tr1cky, I do save them as JPG (originally BMP's, but changed, does it stay the same size, though?). Can I size them down somehow? I have a mac so maybe it's different.

looks to me like you just changed the file ending.. that doesnt change the size of the files or type of file.. they are still bitmapfiles even if they are named xx.jpg

When you do it in paint, you use 'save as' and then set the 'save as type:' to JPEG

OK, I think I might have tried that before, but it didn't work, but maybe not. I'll try it again.

Well, here's the kill count for 5 turns of the Mongol campaign. After that I'm taking a break from this to play COTM.

In the razing of Tabriz, my army blocked one stack, and I baited Tabriz with a defenseless trebuchet, which they unloaded 30 spearmen from the city to take. Tabriz was no match for dromons and army.

Here is a picture of the attempted raze of Karakorum, but unfortunately some stacks were going towards the trebuchet from behind it, and stopped at Karakorum, and the other stack from Karakorum was 1 tile from the trebuchet, so that didn't work. I was about to try again when Egypt unloaded 3 cav's, 2 muskets and a longbowmen, and America unloaded 1 musketman, one longbowmen, and a warrior  . That is where I paused. Look forward to more after COTM XII.

this didn't work, though, Karakorum was too heavily defended.

IIRC Dromons are 2(2).1.5. What gives?

I said at the beginning that I edited the dromon, because with my skill level, I should never even be thinking about Sid Always War.

Okay, inbetween other games I'm playing I managed to sneak in a couple turns. With countless baitings and bombardments I have razed 5 more Mongol cities (including Karakorum). Mongolia only has one city left! I've almost reached my first goal!
While I'm trying to kill Mongolia, Egypt keeps unloading Cavs and Muskets on the Mongolia continent, and it's really annoying.
I now have 4 armies, 3 musket 1 longbow.
