View Full Version : Mach's RBCiv Epics
Mach May 10, 2005, 10:20 PM Welcome to the the private journal of Prof RBCiv48. This is my first epic. I decided to restrict myself to science and economic wonders, to keep in the spirit of the professor. Oh, and Hoover's. That's economic, since I'll be building a lot of wealth, right? Right? :) All other wonders are out, though: no pyramids, no lighthouse, no templars.
I moved the worker on to the wheat and saw the goodie hut, so I settled on the spot and went for the hut. Incense too, nice.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_1.JPG
Of course I go right for the slingshot. Research would stay on max for virtually the entire game, except for the ToE lull.
From huts I got a 3000BC settler, bronze working, warrior code, and monarchy. First contact with the French in 2350BC.
I tuned Hattusas to pump 6-turn settlers with some warriors sprinkled in, and started expanding. Here's my laboratory in 1325, with my dotmap at the time. (The green dots are erasures.) If memory serves me right, the plan was to expand se toward those silks now that my core is up, but that didn't pan out as the French settled that spot well before I could get there.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/dotmap1.jpg
Don't be fooled, I successfully got republic from philosophy. I'm not in republic yet because it wouldn't be profitable; too many units, not enough luxuries. Now I'm researching techs from behind, getting 4 and 5 turn 2nd tier techs.
Also notice the Colossus build; I wouldn't come remotely close to that, yet the professor gave it a try anyway, since he didn't consider the other civs. I actually got two trades: from the French I got the wheel for pottery, and from the Spanish I got masonry (at deficit) for pottery.
Finally revolt to republic in 490BC, got a 4-turn anarchy.
Couldn't stop the French from getting a city behind me; I guess that's what I get for pushing my borders towards them so quickly. It would be the only one they get, fortunately.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_18.JPG
Finished the Great Library in 110AD. Discovered the other continent in 280AD.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_20.JPG
This curragh would sink, as would the next 6 or 7 galleys. I wouldn't get over there for awhile. I beeline down the bottom of the tech tree; every hill I climbed, there was another beyond, and the professor just couldn't help myself. :) In 580AD I see this picture.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_24.JPG
Really, I still can't believe my eyes. With the Great Library, I got to metallurgy before I got mono. Rediculous, isn't it? I still haven't reached the other continent, but nonetheless I do know 3 civs.
Mach May 10, 2005, 10:29 PM Here's my civ at this time; I'm pretty much done settling. Notice the galley build in Kadesh; I still haven't made it over to the other continent yet!
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/settlements.JPG
Revolt to Democracy by 1090AD. The Zulu managed to get a city on our continent, then this happens.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_33.JPG
I had a few med infs in the area, so I took their city, and that was that. They make peace in 1210.
Thus begins the long peace. I got Cop's, Newton, Smith's, ToE (slingshot to Electronics), Hoover's, a Golden Age, all by 1485. Went modern in 1540. Had coal in the north, no rubber though; closest was in France, just outside my borders. The only optional techs I got all game were rep, econ, demo, and printing press. Besides that, I just kept pushing forward.
Then I made a mistake: I went for space flight first, rather than computers. I learned not to do that again. Built Apollo.
In 1640 something exciting happened.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_50.JPG
I pulled my usual gambit of not defending my core cities, and as usual a neighbor decided to try to sneak in and take them. (My screenshot was taken after I shuffled troops to defend.) They attack, and we have war. Luckily I built a bunch of flying machines (when I should have been building research labs...)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_52.JPG
Hey, where'd they go?
Mach May 10, 2005, 10:31 PM I took this opportunity to grab the rubber and silks.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_56.JPG
Also I purged my back lines of the French blight. I got bored and signed an MPP with the Zulu, which was a mistake. The French signed the Spanish up against them, which triggered the MPP, and then I was at war with the Spanish.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_59.JPG
No problem though, just take out their troops as they invade. I left some interior cities undefended, so they never attacked me, they nicely bypassed my border cities for me to take them out. I got a pair of leaders out of it, that I used on spaceship parts.
Spain finally offered peace in 1720, the French in 1762. That was a lot of time spent methodically bombing and killing troops.
Launched in 1812AD.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/RB48_Mach_67.JPG
A big thank you to Sirian for sponsoring this relaxing game. It was fun seeing how far I've my civ education has come; a few months ago, I couldn't have dreamed of playing a game like this.
The professor, however, is sad. The ship is launched; there's no time left to research any more. So he took a nap under his desk. :D
Mach Jul 31, 2005, 09:24 PM This is my report from the RBC50 Epic. Click here (http://realmsbeyond.net/civ/epic50.html) for the variant rules.
The Plan
Ok, so it's a builder game, the idea being we try to make everyone happy, including ourselves. That means culture and trading. Also it's a diplo game, but we're not worried about how fast we get there, so science rate is not a worry.
I'll get lit first and keep it for myself, getting early libs and the Great Lib. Also HG, MoM, and GW if I can. We're sci and rel, so Bach's will trigger our GA, ok. Build culture buildings asap.
Trade will be important as well; I'm gonna go low on military, really the only thing I can do with all the culture building. So I'll have to use trading to keep other civs alive, especially the females.
450BC
Move curragh into Furs for upgrade in 6 turns. I'm gonna assume Sirian was roading up north for a reason, so I continue that. Before moving the settler I move the bowmen and workers, and see the choke. Um...I'm gonna send our second settler up there; first goes toward the unclaimed furs for another core city. Switch Island Paradise to a worker. Send the galley exploring.
Nothing I can do to speed Great Lighthouse, hm.
A view of the world (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_001.JPG)
430BC
Meet the Spanish, uh oh.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_002.JPG
Maybe I should have sent the first settler to the choke, oh well. They have Masonry, Wheel, IW, and 144gp, and they'll only give 17gp for Myst, ok I take it. Obviously they know others with it already. Writing and Poly gets us the rest. They have math and we have maps, and they'll trade it straight up, but...naah. Set research to max.
We have iron up by the choke; no horses in sight, though.
410BC
Found Doobie in your Funk by the furs. Start temple; a chop will help. Spot yellow borders in the east...
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_003.JPG
...and meet Cleo. She has HBR, we have Writing and Poly, and she won't give it up. Oh well...
390BC
The choke is blocked by two bowmen; I send a warrior up to explore.
370BC
I change my mind about the northern workers, and start them back home to work the core; I'm gonna need 'em. Cleo gets Writing and Poly, I still got my maps monopoly. Spain got HBR; maps is worth both math and HBR to her, no deal.
350BC
Maps is no longer worth HBR and math to Izzy, so she must be researching it...
330BC
Upgrade curragh to galley in the south.
270BC
New settler from The Royal Palace heads for the choke. Discover horses up past the choke.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_004.JPG
Meet the Ottos and Persia, they both know what I know plus CoL and HBR. I now need to throw in 20gp to Izzy with maps for Math, I pull the trigger. I can get CoL and HBR and 29gp from Persia for math, but not yet...
(continued)
shady milkman Jul 31, 2005, 09:42 PM Whoa...I guess this is the first time I've seen an "epic?" I never heard of it before. I kind of like it, though, showing the whole game in a few relatively short posts. Nicely done!
Mach Jul 31, 2005, 09:42 PM 250BC
Get lit, start on monarchy.
210BC
Meet the Byz, they are backwards a bit, down math lit and poly.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_005.JPG
I sell her math for a pittance (19gp), because I want to keep the ladies strong. I sell math to Cleo for HBR and 53gp, because I also want her strong and happy (and she knows Izzy, who knows math). Still have my lit monopoly. Also I pause settler building in The Royal Palace long enough to get a lib.
190BC
Ack! All of a sudden everyone has CoL (except Byz), and everyone has math (except the Ottos). I have to throw in some coin, but I get CoL for math.
170BC
Finish the Great Lighthouse.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_006.JPG
150BC
Found Party Barge at the choke.
130BC
Found Toga.
Here's a look at my cities at this point. (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_007.JPG) The library is almost done in the capital, and notice I'm just skimming cities from places. Not having a city dedicated to settlers is uncharacteristic of me, but the lay of the land forced it.
110BC
Meet the Zulu, the winners of the philo sweepstakes. CoL gets me philo and 124gp. They have const too, which they won't give up. The Zulu are the Byz neighbors! That's not good, the Byz are pretty backwards, and the Zulu are pretty strong. I make a Byz embassy, and sure enough they are at war with the Zulu.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_008.JPG
Damn. I gift the Byz CoL, poly, and HBR, hoping that helps; there's nothing else I can do...
50BC
Ottos start MoM the same turn I do in The Royal Palace
10BC
Found The Frat House, my last core city.
10AD
Found The Motor City
50AD
Found Pie in the Sky
Here's another view of my budding civ. (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_009.JPG) Yes, I'm first concentrating on my core, getting the cities founded early, and getting libraries built. I'm almost to monarchy, and I still have my lit monopoly.
110AD
Found George's Pad, meet Rome; nothing doing.
150AD
Discover monarchy...and get a scientific leader! Wooo!!
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_010.JPG
ToA finishes, and MoM falls in the cascade. Damn.
(continued)
Dreadnought Jul 31, 2005, 09:53 PM Nice story...keep it up!
Mach Jul 31, 2005, 10:04 PM 170AD
I think really hard about what to do with the leader, and I end up rushing the Great Lib in The Pungent Weeds. The Royal Palace had started a Great Lib prebuild; it switches to HG...
Then I turn off research; I'm gonna rush some culture and courts in corrupt places. This was the plan all along, since there's no premium on winning early here.
Revolt; 2 turn anarchy.
190AD
Get construction from the Great Lib, become a monarchy. Gross income goes from 59 to 75gpt.
210AD
Found The Pretty Ponies north of the choke.
250AD
Finally I can trade with a chick: Egypt. I send her furs and wine for free.
260AD
Found Party!
270AD
And yet another view of my settlements. (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_011.JPG) I've started to settle the north; I got the horses, as you can see. Research is off, as I said, and those northern courts will be rushed over time.
280AD
Meet Cathy, and she's waaay behind tech-wise, isolated on an island.
Also it's time to make embassies all around. Nothing surprising to learn, but my reputation gets much better.
290AD
Found The Gold Strike. Also meet a Byz settler on my continent, yay!
340AD
Send furs and wines to Cathy.
350AD
Found Dig It.
370AD
Zulu and Byz sign peace. Breathe.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_012.JPG
390AD
Get the HG.
400AD
Send furs & wines to Byz.
410AD
Found The Royal Harem, our last settlement. Grab the last furs in the process. Persia declares on the Romans. They are the two strongest civs; battle of the titans!
Here's two views of my civ, so you can look at my final settlement placements...
the south (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_013.JPG)
the north (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_014.JPG)
You can see I'm a dozen or so turns from my FP; I built it in toga simply because it finished fastest there. It's getting built a bit late; I didn't start a good prebuild earlier because of the wonder, settler, and library building. The plan for here on out goes like this: rush improvements in the north: courts, libs, and 'ducts, in that order. Build aquaducts in the south as soon as convienient, because I want as large a population as I can muster when the GA is triggered by Bach's. After 'ducts, then markets. Only then will I build some horses to bolster my military. I don't expect any wars, what with all the luxes I'm giving out, and with all the culture I've built up.
(continued)
Mach Jul 31, 2005, 10:10 PM 430AD
Zulu declares on Spain. I finally uncover a Spanish harbor, and I gift Izzy wines and furs. I'm gonna keep the ladies supplied with both wines and furs for free the entire game.
450AD
Get currency from Gl, go Medieval. Our freebie is...eng. Zulu finish GW.
460AD
Gift the sci civs up. Theodora, Cathy, and Xerxes all got eng, and Osman got feud. No trade with Osman, so that's the end of that.
470AD
Get feud from the GL.
480AD
Get republic from the GL.
520AD
FP in Toga. Economy takes a nice little jump.
530AD
Everyone in the world is relatively happy with me except the Mongols. I sell them currency for 2gp; this makes them the last into the MA. That and the embassy gets him cautious.
650AD
Just chuggin' along. The kitty is building up, the ai's are researching slowly. I'm just waiting to mono to come through, before I turn on research on the top branch, to push toward Bach. (I was going to wait for edu to start research again, but I'm getting tired of waiting...) I gift the Byz my only iron, to strengthen them up. I'm not using it right now...
690AD
By a strange freak of luck, I still have my lit monopoly!
720AD
Still chuggin' along. Still no mono.
750AD
I notice Persia finally got lit.
790AD
Turns are just flying by now...and finally Izzy gets Mono! I've started on colosseums as prebuilds for cathedrals, the first prebuild ends in 7 turns.
800AD
Mongols declare on Persians.
840AD
Two turns to go on my prebuilds, and still only Spain has mono. It looks like I'm gonna have to flipflop my builds to keep the prebuilds alive...
860AD
The Ottos get Mono! ...and so do I.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_015.JPG
870AD
Switch many cities to cathedral, all of which will finish next turn.
Crank research on Theo, in 7 at -23gpt.
880AD
We get invention from the GL.
910AD
I give in to a Zulu demand for wines. Sure, I'll buy you a beer!
The palace prebuild in Paradise is for Bach...
930AD
Theo --> Edu in 8.
(continued)
Mach Jul 31, 2005, 10:18 PM 1000AD
Report! I'm 2 turns from edu, and I got colosseum prebuilds (for uni) all over my core. There's a palace prebuild for Bach's in Paradise -- prebuild done in 13. Pungent Weeds has just moved up to fourth on the culture city list; Vinyards is less than 100 cp behind, so I expect it to move into fifth soon. Paradise is my 4th highest culture city, but it's way behind, hopefully Bach's will help. There are a few wars around, but none dangerous, except for maybe Persia beating up Rome a bit, but Rome seems to be holding.
Bach's is gonna give me my GA. My entire core has aquaducts, so I'm pretty well positioned to make the most of it.
I've been skimming workers when I can; I'm up to 26, and I'm down to the touchup phase of improvements.
1010AD
To help Rome I send my iron to him for silks & gems.
1160AD
Things are going fine, KT and Sun Tzu have been built; the ai's are now building Leo's and Sistine. I'm building Cop's and Bach, and I have a Leo's prebuild for Shakes in Doobie, we'll see if that holds. The Mongols demand edu, I give in.
Bach's is due in 21, hopefully cascades will be over well before then. I'm 3 from PP, then 6 from Banks, then Demo...I'll be in demo by the time I hit my GA!
1170AD
I trade edu about for a bit. Also I get gunpowder from Persia for Theo and luxes; there's no salt anywhere near me.
1190AD
I notice that the city of Rome has fallen; I don't think I can help them. They have a colony or two, so maybe they'll hold on as a occ.
1250AD
Spanish finish Sistine, and the cascade ends. Yay! I'm working on demo in 6.
1275AD
Persia and Rome sign peace. Get demo.
1280AD
Revolt! Get 2 turns.
1290AD
Become a demo. The economy gets a big boost. Sell come communications around, get some luxes. Finish Cop's in the capital.
1320AD
Finish Bach in Paradise and enter GA. My entire first ring is completely improved and at size 12, with all mutiplier buildings built, so I'm fully positioned for this GA (at least, that's what my abilities tell me...)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_016.JPG
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_017.JPG
(continued)
Mach Jul 31, 2005, 10:35 PM 1340AD
Rome and Zulu sign MA against Spain. I'm singularly unafraid of this war -- Spain is very strong, and none of them share a common landmass...
1350AD
I buy chem from Persia for furs, wines, PP, and 10gpt. I have nav and econ and FA at this point, start in on physics in 4 at +202gpt. I have a palace prebuild for Smith's in Weeds, and a Smith prebuild for ToG in the Palace.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_018.JPG
1355AD
Spain signs the Byz up against Rome.
1415AD
Newton's in Palace. Also got Magellan's in there, and Smith's is building. No ai has any chance at a wonder now, my tech lead is too high. For now...I'll gift them up soon...
1420AD
GA ends...
1425AD
Go Industrial...our freebie is...Nationalism, bleah.
Russia is way way behind, they don't even have mono, so I gift them all the way up. She gets medicine.
Then I gift up the Byz, she gets medicine.
Then the Ottos, they get nationalism. Bleah.
Then the Persians, they get medicine. Bleah!
Ok, I gift the entire world up to nationalism; I want to start an era of defensive wars, if any... I feel this is a key move. Steam in 5.
1455AD
Ok, I got steam, and of course we have no coal. Egypt has a bunch, actually, so I gift her steam; luckily she has more than one hooked up, so I trade medicine for coal. And the railroads begin...
1490AD
Spain declares on Egypt. That sucks. I'll have to keep an eye on this, and help whoever gets behind.
1515AD
I get Smiths, and the cascade dies.
1580AD
A good year, we get RP and a sci leader.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_019.JPG
Then we get ToE, and AT and Electronics. Start on Hoover, and switch Paradise over to Suffrage.
1610AD
Blah, blah...just coasting to Hoover and Suffrage, with a huge tech lead...
1650AD
Suffrage
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_023.JPG
1690AD
Plugging along. There's a dogpile against Spain, but she's holding up nicely. She's taken a few Egyptian cities, however, so I sell rep parts around for not much at all. Again, I'm hoping this'll start an era of defensive wars. The Ottos are down to an occ, and I'm actually hoping they die soon, since they have the #2 culture city...
1720AD
Well...
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_020.JPG
1756AD
Go modern, and my freebie is...Rocketry. Well, we have aluminum.
Gift Russia up, she gets Fission.
Gift Byz up, she gets ecology.
Gift Persia up, he gets Fission!
Rockets gets me fission from Russia. I have two uraniums.
Gift everyone else up.
Persia will be the UN opponent, I gift wines and furs to everyone else.
Rush the UN, hit space...
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_021.JPG
It was Shaka! Either way, it's all the same to me; everyone else voted for little ol' me. Yay! A plate of hero cookies to me!
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_022.JPG
Score, by my count...
100 -- diplo win
80 -- four women voted for me
4 -- four men voted for me (including myself, thanks Rik!)
10 -- Great Lighthouse
10 -- Bach
10 -- Suffrage
8 -- Four women supplied with wines and furs in 1500
15 -- Palace is highest culture
6 -- Three other cities in the top five culture
10 -- Have the most culture

Mach Jul 31, 2005, 10:41 PM Recap
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_026.JPG
Top 5 cities (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_024.JPG)
Final culture (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/rbc50_mach_025.JPG)
I don't have much to say, really. I got lucky that no one attacked me; I've had enough experiences of being sneak attacked by a gracious civ. I like how I handled the GA in this one, I feel I made the most of it. I don't know what I could have done to get that fifth city into the top 5 culture; to avoid the early GA, I had to avoid the ancient religious wonders, and that was hard to overcome. I'll be interested to see if anyone pulls it off...
If anyone has any questions about scoring, please let me know, and I'll be glad to clarify or correct. :)
Thanks Sirian for a great game, and congratulations to the whole RBCiv community for hitting a half century! [party]
killercane Aug 01, 2005, 02:07 AM Nice job getting 4 cities on the top five list; I had enough trouble getting a 3rd!
Rik Meleet Aug 01, 2005, 06:43 AM I considered a 4th city in the top 5 impossible - unless 1 of the 3 top foreign cities (Rome, Karakorum, Istanbul) would be attacked and captured. The danger in that is that the civ which would have lost the Capital would be destroyed; creating a superpower on the "male continent" which could lead to the death of 3 civs (-3 scenario points), while gaining me only 2 points.
In your game Rome and Istanbul lost their culture due to conquest, but the Romans weren't destroyed (nor were the Mongols) thus you only lost 1 point, but gained 2 in the extra city in the top 5.
BTW: I think you gained 1 more point; 4 males (Babylonian leader is male) voted for you. That's how I counted.
Well done !! :goodjob:
Lord_Iggy Aug 01, 2005, 07:37 PM Nice work. I just finished reading all of your guys Epic#50 game logs. :goodjob:
