I was wondering, what Civ's does people in here prefer to play??
I always play either the Americans or the Romans when playing for fun or multi player. But if I'm playing for a high score then it is always one of the Orange Civ's, Greek, Carthaginians or English. I don't know why, but that is just how I play and I have gotten use to having a huge number of orange cities on the map.
That's why I'm playing the English in my bid for the Deity high score, they are the only once that I haven't played all the way up.

I always play as the English. This is not because I'm English! It's simply because the orange colour is very distinctive and impossible to confuse.

I never use the suggested English city names - I always invent new ones which are appropriate to the geography so that I remember where they are. Which will probably mean I'll rename all the existing cities in GOTM #2!

In my case I have edited my rules.txt to include 6 new civs and I have moved others around. I usually play as the Wanderers(took the old spot of the Babylonians). The standard civs I play are the Celts,as I am a druid irl, the Romans, took 2 years of Latin in high school, and the English, my mother's side of the family.

I customized my version of civ by replacing the babylonians (green) with Irish. I have all the classic cities: Belfast, Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork, Cobh, Dundalk, Bantry, Kinsale, Wicklow (to name a few).

Hi all! (my first post)

I seem to like the Babylonians, but why, don't know.

But I wonder... do the different Civ's have different characteristics? For example, do they have a tendency to start with a different set of knowledge?

At least the computer seems to play different civs with different style.

Just wondering if it were possible to choose a favorite civ on this basis.

I play the Romans, and of course, the RUssians. They're both white, so they show up on the map really well. I'm used to white anyways because when I just started to play Civ, I chose the Russians, and I thought White was the default colour for human players.

I usually play german, because of the cool names for cities that exist in reality, plus
others I can name for famous germans in history, such as Ezherzog Ferdinand Max,
Prinz Eitel Friedrich Freya, or Kronprinz Maximillian von Prittwitz. When I'm just
fooling around with experiments, I play the
romans as emporer Biggus Diccus, or I'll play
the English with city names like Irritable,
Indignant or Insolant ( all cities begin with
the letter I ).

I hold down the down arrow key and then let go with my eyes closed, and thus select a civ at random. After my current game, however, I may never play a civ with dark blue color again (Vikings in this instance). Nearly impossible to see my cities against the dark green of the reference map. Then again, better to have a hard time seeing my cities when I know where they are then to have a hard time seeing an enemies cities when I may not have as good an idea....

Yea Hippo, that goes for me to - The ZULUs are banned in my little world.
They are the only Civ I have ever lost with and there for never ever shall their foul tribe be mine to command.

Well, as a Promethean Gnostic with a bit a Druidism, I tend to play anyone except the Purple People Eaters If I am feeling really annoyed with the world, I pick the Mongols, World Map Small, Chieftain Level, pick my Computer Opponents (whom I cluster in Europe), and then like the Devil's Horseman I wipe out Western Civilization by 2500 B.C. (Fortunately, I only have these type of days every three or four months; who would have thunk that Civ 2 could be therapeutic.)

Sometimes I just play the Americans or the English.

But usually, I like to change the name to the Israelis. (I'm a somewhat non-observant Jew, so it makes me feel good.)

I'll play as the Germans, of course. Or else as the Americans, or a custom named civ played as a modification of the Americans.

I either choose the Americans or English...

The Amaricans are near useless AI's, there are so many games that I have had where they dwindle with a handful of cities and eventually taken over so I may as well just be them so that my competitors are good http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/redface.gif)

The English on the other hand are always a force. They don't muck around, so I like to be them 'on the other hand' just because I like them so much.

I don't really play the other 'coloured' civs 'mebby coz I am white', not racist but I dont think I fancy myself as an Indian, Mongol or Zulu *hehe* and besides, they are all great competition.

I am never the russians because apart from being usless with techs, they are sure to give me a good beating (or try) throughout the game, they are just hellbent on mass destruction 'How Cute' ROFL <-- I think to myself sarcastically every time the rock up with another set of soon to be dead units http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/redface.gif)

As a third preferance, I like to be the Vikings, just because I think the helmets with horns is pretty kewl *hehe* and I like the scandanavians in real life http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/redface.gif)

The vast majority of the time I create a custom civ name and titles.

Usually they are "The Eldar" ... a race of noble humans, and all the other civs are jealous of their greatness, but unwilling to accept the responsibilities of attaining that nobility for themselves... and so they pit themselves against the wise and noble Eldar.

Ok... that was a little cheesy, but its my escape...

Hey hey, Dwarven_Megalomaniac!!!

The Eldar are a highly advanced race of psychers!!! Haven't you ever played Warhammer 40K or Epic 40.000????
They rely on speed and high tech and they kick *** in both games.

Then again, if you play D&D then the Eldar are the ancestors of the Elves!!!

I usually play as the Americans so the cities are familiar to me and I can remember thier locations easier.

Further, when the computer runs out of actual American city names, I can substitue with one that I can associate with.

I guess the only downside of always being the Americans is that I never get a chance to play against the other light blue civs. What is this color like as an AI?

You could have substituted the "v" in abrevviations, to make another "b" and make "abbreviations" and you would still end up with 87 characters (including spaces).
