Does it give you an error message before it crashes? (eg. "missing entry in Pediaicons.txt") or similar?

Well, if you hear the sound, setting the refresh rate manually might help (long shot).
See this post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=118126#9).

The number of times per second that your monitor screen redraws. The instructions are at that link.

Thanks I tried again with your instructions:_
Option 1: Look in your ..\Civilization III\Art\movies\ folder for a file called "Race.BIK". Rename this to "Race_Old.bik" or some other name. Make a copy of "intro.BIK" (or even "security_briefing.bik") found in the same folder. Rename it to "Race.BIK". Now you won't get the space race movie, but hopefully the game won't crash....
this work in the vanilla civ 3 but the game still crashes in conquests expansion,
there is a "Conquests.bik" file & "Victory_Movie.bik file" is the p[rocess similer to above?

I think yes. AFAIK Conquests.bik is the intro movie, and Victory_Movie the space one. Rename them the same way.
