I have been playing civ3 quite extensively the last few weeks and i'm over joyed when my military obtains a leader and the progress from standard to veteran and elite units to special.

however I was thinking...

Of an addition, a scheme to add honor to your soldier(s) by awarding medals. If a soldier is highly successful I think there should be a process to accelerate the veteran level and perhaps a 50% defence bonus or likewise attack upon the time your unit is awarded the medal from you, the King or Leader.

Like any lengthy war, there will be prominent generals and heroic soldiers. At a costly price of gold and perhaps a silver resource there could be an award. The soldier/army are then given the empires victory medals at a cost. This would turn the unit into a more courages and increase percentiles of their fighting efforts.

Isnt this sort of like the promotions thing which has already been stated was in the game.

promotions have been stated, however I don't know what they mean by promotions? simply promoting units is different to medals of Honor. A medal of Honour would be an additional feature on top of a rank or soldier promoted. A medalion would be the highest award for a fighter or defender and be a feature ontop of their rank adding a percentile bonus.

What would awarding medals to valiant soldiers add to the game above and beyond promotions (which is already in)?? Also, consider, each unit on the map represents a squad/unit/legion/whatever (large group of people), so you'd never see the award anyway.

It doesn't sound like it adds anything to the game, IMO.

This seems to also suggest a lack of control over the units. If you award a "Knight's Cross" or "Gold Star" or whatever to a unit, another commander might become jealous and start acting more aggressively. Just like the bi-consular Roman system at the start of the 2nd Punic War, where each consul tried to outdo the other, contributing to their loss.

I thought of something very similar (perhaps cross-compatible) in which your cities would automatically gain statues for military achievements. Not to change the dynamics of the game, but to make cities more distinguishable from each other.

What about WW2 when the Limeys and Yanks raced against each other to try and look best even though they were on the same side?

The concept of animosity is well established in physical strategic games but appears not have migrated to computer games :confused:

On the track, my idea suggests that;
awarding a medal means;

- you can only do it for a very successful military unit
- costs a lot maybe 150-200 gold?
- adds 50% bonus
x2 on hills/forests making the unit stand a much better chance in battle
either from honour or the stats, one can assume eitherway enriching the
games quality.

Why would it cost so much money?

It seems to me becoming a veteren and elite covers this, medals would just be another, unnecesary level
