View Full Version : Poser Figures and Props for Kinboat's Paperdoll

May 27, 2005, 08:00 AM
Zulu9812 asked that I post some of the items that I use for Kinboat's paperdoll for others to use, if they so wish. So, here is the first batch. I'll post more, as I make them. I have not posted everything, so if there is something that you would like that has not been posted, ask me via PM or e-mail--I might still have the file somewhere. I'm just not sure. The problem is that every so often I burn the folders containing the files for my units onto CD's and then deleted them from my hard drive. Therefore, not everything is always handy. I will edit the first post each time I upload new items.

Please, post only if you are uploading Poser props and figures made specifically for the paperdoll. There are other threads for posting general 3D models.

PROPS

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Cape.jpg
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Cape.zip). This is a morphable cape. It should be parented to the paperdoll's chest. With resizing, it should pass over most clothing figures.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Celtic_Helmet_1.jpg
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Celtic_Helmet_1.zip). This is a helmet to be parented to the paperdoll's head. It's designed to be worn over the long hair figure that fits with the cape above. With a little resizing, it should fit just the paperdoll's head.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Longbow.jpg
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Longbow.zip). This is the longbow prop that I used for my longbowman. There is a draw morph for it. It's not the best, but it works.

Awesome. Special thanks for the Sherden armor!

Btw, if the shield prop for the Carthaginian soldier is yours, I'd love to see it posted here...

Actually the Shield prop for the Carthaginian figure came from a package over at PoserPros, so I can't distribute it here. I could always post the texture map here, and you could buy the Atlantean Guard - it is only $2.49, after all

Well, the texture isn't of much interest for me, really.
I want it, cause it's exactly the mycenean greek traditionally used sheild(8-shaped).
Thanks for the heads up though. I think I have that one under consideration, but, I've managed to put my card in a condition I can't use it so much(at all really).

Utahjazz7, what software do u use to produce that props?
BTW, thanks for sharing these cool creations! :goodjob:

I'm using Rhinoceros 2.0 to model. Then I save them in .3ds format and import them into Poser5. Then, I either parent the models to a body part and add them to my Poser library as smart props. Or, I enter the Setup room and convert the models into conforming figures for Kinboat's paperdoll.

CivArmy, any 3d software will do, have in mind, providing it can save in formats Poser can recognize(of hand, 3ds, lwo, dxf and wrl, though there were others I haven't imported).

A correction. It can't read .lwo. That was my mistake. Not Poser 4.0 at least.

I just tried these a few days ago and couldn't.
You're obviously using some Poser version higher than 4/pro.
Could you make them a .pz file in case I could use them that way?
The way they are my version can't read them and I'll be forced to use the obj's only as a final solution.

These props are really great! Thank you so much.

Utahjazz7, would it be possible for you or any other modeler with a kind heart to post a version of your celtic warrior without those two extra bump things on the front? I've been trying to put one flat image over it and its incredibly hard to get everything to line up. If it would take you a while just tell me and I'll try something else, but I think it should just be a few clicks.

utahjazz7

@gunner

Simply set the "bumps" to be invisible. That'll take care of the problem.

@gunner

How can I do that? In Daz Studio at least, the whole shield is treated as one item. Is there a way I could somehow set the "bumps" invisible through their part of the texture?

It isn't really that big of a deal anymore. I changed the design of the shield to actually use the "bumps" rather than try to ignore them. But I'd still like to know how to do it in the future.

utahjazz7
Aug 27, 2005, 01:59 PM
Well, I really have no idea about DAZ Studio, just Poser. But, in Poser, the shield is also one item: Shield. However, the shield has, I think, five different materials. There's the back, front trim, front, and the two "bumps". Each of these seperate materials can be changed independently of the others; you can make just the bumps invisible without affecting the other elements.

Ah, I found the problem I had, turns out I can read them, but misplaced them, under new figures. I just relocated the .cr2's search path for reading my folder and the problem was fixed. Nice work indeed!

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/egypt_shield.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/egypt_shield.zip). R8XFT needed an Egyptian shield prop, so I whipped this one up for him. It comes with two .jpg images. One is a blank texture map, if you want to create your own texture. The other one is the texture map that you see if the preview image; at some point, you will probably need to tell Poser where to find this file.

PROPS

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/Round_Shield.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/round_shield.zip). This is a simple round shield. It comes with the texture seen in the preview as well as a texture map. It's divided into front and back, but the front wraps around the edge of the shield just a bit.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/Round_Shield_Ringed.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/round_shield_ringed.zip). This is the same shield as posted above, except that the front of the shield has three materials. There's a center area and two rings. You can see the two rings clearly in the preview. This also comes with the texture seen in the preview and a texture map.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/Shield_Stuff.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/shield_stuff.zip). This is a smart prop parented to the left forearm. It is supposed to create the look of having the shield strapped to the arm. It's only a prop, so don't move the left hand--the handle will not move with it. There's no texture or texture map for this.

can you release your horse? and a poser file of a paper doll already on the horse?

I just use the standard Poser horse, but I edited some of the settings: thickening the legs, shortening the body, etc. Eventually I found something that I like. I don't think I can release it though, since the model actually came with Poser.

As for the figure, that's all you have to do is move the body around and turn off the IK-chain for the feet. Then, I just parent the figure to the horse's waist/abdomen.

ShiroKobbure
Feb 13, 2006, 08:36 PM
But can you realse the poser file (just the file, not the props or characters) so when you open the file in poser everything is right there ready. The .PZ3 file.

POSER FILE

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/horse.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/new_horse_unit_2.zip). This is the poser setup that I use for all of my mounted units. It uses the Poser horse and Kinboat's paperdoll. Neither model is actually located in this download. The Poser horse will load with some altered proportions, and the paperdoll will be parented to the horse's abdomen. Shiro tells me that if you're using Poser 6, when you open the file, Poser will ask you to locate horse.obj, but you need find horseHIP3.obj instead.

CONFORMING FIGURES

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/horse_saddle.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/saddle.zip). This is a saddle that will conform to the Poser horse. If you are using my setup file, after conforming the figure to the horse, you will have to set the body's z-scale to 86%. (In my Poser setup file the horse's body z-scale is set to 86%.)

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/horse_hair.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/horse_hair.zip). This is a hair figure for the Poser horse. If you are using my setup file, after conforming the figure to the horse, you will have to set the body's z-scale to 86%. (In my Poser setup file the horse's body z-scale is set to 86%.)

FIGURES

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/asian_swordsman_figure.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/asian_swordsman_figure.zip). This is my complete Asian Swordsman figure. It's basically Kinboat's armor figure (knight) with a lot of parts made invisible and stuff I made added to it. This is my first attempt at posting a full figure, so I don't know if it'll work or not.

CONFORMING FIGURES

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/japanese_pants.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/japanese_pants.zip). These are a pair of Kinboat's pants with two props attached to the shins. Kinboat's pants ended at the knees, so I made the props to look like ties and the bottom part of the pants.

PROPS

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/sword_sheath.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/sword_sheath.zip). Here's the sheath prop. Here's what I did. I took a normal sphere prop, made it invisible, and parented it the the PDM hip. Then, I parented the sheath to the sphere in order to move it realistically.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/japanese_sword.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/japanese_sword.zip). Here's the sword. It has two morphs. One makes it a short sword. The other makes it really short--that's how I was able to make draw and sheath animations without the sword poking through the sheath. When the sword was sheathed, it too was parented to the invisible sphere--just like the sheath was.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/japanese_helmet.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/japanese_helmet.zip). This is the helmet that I created for the Asian Swordsman.

MATERIALS

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/armor_japan_material.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/armor_japan_material.zip). This is the material that I used for the Armor and Kilt that the Asian Swordsman wears. I suspect that you might need it if you wanted to use the Asian Swordsman figure (above). It was created from the standard Poser5 tile material; I just switched some settings and colors.

Okay, I'm finally updating this thread. Hopefully some of you out there will find some of this useful.

USEFUL INFORMATION

This might be known by some of you, but I just found this out recently. Poser files (.pz3) are editible with a text editor. I would suggest notepad, or textedit for mac users. A couple weeks ago, I had been having problems when I opened up my poser files. Everytime I opened one, I would have to locate some .obj files for Poser. Then I found out that the path to the .obj files was written wrong in the Poser file. The path simply has to be rewritten. This will eliminate the problem that I wrote about when using my Poser setup for mounted units.

For each figure in the scene, there are two lines that begin with "figureResFile" followed by the path to the geometry file (.obj). For example,

figureResFile :Runtime:libraries:character:Civ3:Paperdoll Male.obj

If the path is written incorrectly for your computer, then simple write the path correctly. You have to do this for both "figureResFile" entries though.

CONFORMING FIGURES

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/Horse_Drape.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/horse_drape.zip). This is the horse drape or barding that I used for my Aztec Knight. It's not perfect by any means, but it is useable. If you're using my Poser setup for mounted units, than you will have to make some changes to the proportions of the horse drape to get it to conform properly. After conforming the figure to the horse, you will have to set the body's z-scale to 86%. (In my Poser setup file the horse's body z-scale is set to 86%.) Also, you will have to lower the z-scale of the upper neck to around 76%. And, the various scales of the head will have to be edited.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/PDM_Shirt.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/pdm_shirt.zip). This is just Kinboat's PDM Tshirt but with everything as one material. Kinboat's original had like five different materials, and it was a bit tiresome to change them all to the same settings, so I made this edited version.

PROPS

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/Wagon.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/Wagon.zip). I thought this could maybe be used by a worker or something. This is actually a collection of various props. I'll explain how to use it as best I can. The various parts of the wagon and parented to each other in some way. First, everything is parented to the WagonBALL_1 prop. I would strongly recommend parenting this prop to the ROTATE BALL. Secondly, the WagonAxel_1 prop controlls the wheels; change the x-rotate to turn the wheels. Third, the Cart_Ball_1 prop controls the basket and handles. Again, change the x-rotate of this prop to rotate the basket and make it look like it's rotating on the axel. Finally, to get it to stay in the paperdoll's hands, turn on the IK-chains for both of the paperdolls hands and parent them to the WagonCart_1 prop.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/Hair_Short.pnghttp://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/Hat_Soft_Cap.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/cap_and_hair.zip). These are to props that I made for MoscaTNT. The first is some hair. The second is a cap to fit over the hair. They're combined in one download from when I sent them to MoscaTNT, so they are here too.

ANIMATIONS

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/Run_Horse.png
Download (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/run_horse_animation.zip). I already posted this in another thread, but I thought that I would throw it up here as well. It a 10 frame running animation for the Poser horse.

I could give it a shot, but it wouldn't have the quality that only you, Mosca, Aaglo and Kinboat can produce at the moment. But give me some time...and I'm sure I will be as good as you.

Now I'm back into Civ 3 unit making for Anno Domini in a big way, Partizanac has requested this to be made into a unit:

http://shop.011shop.co.yu/user/include/011/images/items/Despot-Stefan.jpg

That helmet's giving me problems for starters; any chance you could help with an outfit for this character? I'm sure that if you had the time and inclination to do this, the outfit could be amended to suit other units as well. Furthermore, whilst I'm being cheeky, could you point me in the right direction for creating templates for your existing models? The Greek armour, for example, could be made to look like a Viking tunic if I were able to use a template to make it look like it, rather than just altering the colours of each of the body parts. Ideally, I'd like to use the PDM (and PDF!!) for all my future units because I like working with it rather than M3, but the variation is limited and would be given a big boost by being able to amend the existing "collection" myself.

It might do. It could be again that if I were to get a template for the Greek armour, I could create the tunic, the cape's already been done; with a template for one of the trouser sets, I could make the trousers look like the picture above....but I'm still struggling with the helmet, which Partizanac would love to be "spot on." I'm sure I'll have no problems sorting myself out with the sword and shield.

As far as creating texture maps for the models, I just checked, and this was discussed briefly in my tutorial. See Building the Model, Part 5, Another Conforming Figure.

In the tutorial, you open up runtime\libraries\character\CivIII figures\Kilt 4.obj. But, you can open up any .obj file that you want to, including the Greek Armor.

When you open the file, UVMapper will preview the texture map as the model is currently constructed. With the *\Greek Armor.obj file, you'll see that it looks kind of funky. On the left are things like the straps, belt, and chest emblem. On the right are things like the armor trim, kilt, and armor.

If you don't like this setup, you can change it. To make a map for the whole .obj file at once, don't select anything, just use the commands in the Map menu. Or, use the Select menu to pick out materials or body parts that you want to change. Then use the commands in the Map menu to control how you want the selected surface areas to be mapped. You can move them around to fit in the image properly as well.

When you've got it the way you like it. Export the texture map, and export the model. I always just overwrite the existing .obj file. That should do it.

That would be great thank-you :goodjob: ; it would be terrific if you could texture it as well. It wouldn't matter that it wasn't a smart prop because it's just a helmet; I can parent it to the head. One more thing is to make you aware that I'm purely using it for a unit, so the level of detail wouldn't need to be too high (because of the scale of the model). As you might image, I was thinking that the scarf could be civ-coloured. Thanks again Bjornlo and just to let you know I won't be getting around to animating the unit for a couple of weeks anyway.

Thanks also Torey for your comments about how to get the texture. I'll give this a go. I hadn't noticed the texture part in your tutorial  so I apologise for not checking. Not a problem. I just wanted to make you aware of it, so I didn't have to type it out again. :) Yeah, you can get quite different looks by useing textures and transparency maps together. Good luck.

I just now noticed that the scarf is thicker on one side than the other. So I will fix that. Any other comments / complaints?
Again, remember this is a simple prop, not conforming or morphing (unless you apply your own morphs to it). But I have checked it in Poser.

No, it just means you have to position it yourself. A conforming figure is one with joints, as it were, that flexes as your main figure moves. For example, most of Kinboat's clothes models are conforming figures, which means that you conform them to the PDM and they move with him, as clothes should. A non-conforming prop is rigid, as it were, so you attach it to the relevant part of the body and leave it. There's no reason why hats, helmets, weapons, etc should be conforming, since in real life these things don't usually have parts that need to move as the wearer moves. An exception to this might be Kinboat's Aiel Turban, which covers the whole head, neck, and chest, and flexes as the character turns his head.

Ach, so...

Thanks, Plotinus! That cleares alot of things for me

One question. When I try to mix a PDM and a Trolloc, give it a Trolloc head preciesely, I do this:

Open the PDM, and then open the Trolloc. I make everything on the Trolloc invisible except for the head and neck, maybe chest too, can`t remember. Then I make the PDM head invisible cos it pokes trough the back of T`s neck.

Will the move together now (haven`t gotten to animating yet, I`m still fidlling with the design)? I tried to conform the T`s head to PDM but then Poser flips it on the side, at waist height?

Plotinus
Nov 05, 2006, 04:02 PM
You shouldn't try to conform one to the other like that. You should parent the Trolloc to the PDM's head. Then move it into position so that its head is where the PDM's head would be.

That should work, but it's rather clumsy. A neater way of doing this would be to use the Grouping Tool to create a new prop that is just the Trolloc's head.

This is how you do it. I don't have the Trollog but I'm trying it with the Ushabti, and the same principles apply. Select the Trollog and open the Grouping Tool. Now select the Head from the list of body parts. You may find that you have to select the Trollog's head first and then open the Grouping Tool. When you've done this and selected the Head within the Grouping Tool, the head should turn red. This indicates that all the polygons in the head are part of the Head body part. Now click on Create Prop. This simply creates a brand new prop consisting of all the selected polygons. It doesn't alter the original figure in any way. So now you can close the Grouping Tool and get rid of the Trollog figure, and you should have a nice replica of his head which you can now move into position and parent to the PDM's neck.

The Grouping Tool is a bugger to use but very powerful. Notice the + and - signs near the top. These allow you to select and deselect polygons within the selected group. So if you wanted to make a replica of the Trollog's head but without the ears, you could simply use the - tool to deselect the polygons in the ears from the group before you spawn the prop.

Plot, another way to make props (as well as custom Morph targets, if you know what you're doing) is to select a body part and use Export as Mesh option, then select .obj A menu will pop up that allows you to select what parts of the current model(s) you want to export... Just deselect all, then select the head and export that. Now you can re-import the head and either (a) parent it to the new base figure or (b) select the new base figure's head and choose "Replace body part with prop" from the menu, which will replace the figures head with your imported one.

Here are the figure and props that I created for my Bronze Axeman unit. Be warned that the models have a lot of polygons and render slowly. I'm also distributing the textures that I used for the unit, but I would really, really prefer it if I did not see the textures used for other units without some strong modification. For example, I don't want to see other units running around with the same shield design. If that happens, I won't post things in the future. :)

Ehh, that's a bit tedious. In order to do that you need to export a model for each morph. Basically, load my cape into the scene and export it as a model (e.g., .3ds). Then, dial the first morph to 1.000 and export it again. Reset the first morph dial to 0.000 and move on to the second morph. Do this until you end up with a separate, exported model for the cape and each morph (e.g., swing back, swing left, etc.)

Then, take the regular model that you exported and make your UV map for it. Then, save the model. Import the model into a new Poser scene.

Then, with the object selected, click Object > Load Morph Target

For Geometry file, locate the model for the first morph that you exported. Name the morph. Repeat for all the remaining morphs.

Thanks for the info... it has to be OBJs not 3ds files, btw (found out). But since in the process of fixing the mesh so that it could take a UV map I changed the number of verticies, it is not possible to use this method (poser complained). Ah well.

utahjazz7
Jun 28, 2007, 04:10 AM
When I've done this in the past, I'm pretty sure that I used .3ds as the exported models' file type. But, I'm using Poser5, so perhaps something has changed.

Perhaps Morph Manager (http://www.morphography.uk.vu/dlutility.html) would help you out?

Thanks I'll give that a try. I suspect that the cape will have to be entirely remade to be UV mappable though. The present mesh can not be UV Mapped. Fixing it, like I did, changed the vertexs enough that Poser would not reapply the morphs. Based on a little reading I just did, I am not certain, but I "think" that morphs are based on these vertexs (like a grid co-ordinate of what to bend) so even if I had gotten the morphs to apply the results would have been strange.
But, it is a free utility and I want to use the cape UV mapped myself, so I will try it and see.

Here are the props and figures I made for my Tribal Fanatic unit. Use them well, and, please, be original. :) I'm also posting the sickle prop I made for Plotinus's soviet worker.

CONFORMING FIGURES

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads//body_wrap_Ax0.png
Download (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6023&act=down). A clothing figure which conforms to Kinboat's paperdoll figure. The hip moves with morphs, like Kinboat's kilt. Unfortunately, the chest doesn't bend forward well; after about 10 degrees the figure goes crazy.

One quick question for you Utah, I am starting your unit creation tutorial and was wondering would it be best to make a CivIII hair folder inside the Program Files\Curious Labs\Poser 5\Runtime\libraries\hair folder and put all the hair beards etc there?

utahjazz7
Jul 11, 2007, 04:50 AM
Umm . . . I don't know. I don't think it really matters. I'd say to do whatever you prefer; I prefer having all my Civ3 stuff in one place.

BadKharma

OK Thanks for the quick answer. I have a feeling I am in for a major learning experience.
I tried a quick experiment place the beard in both a CivIII Hair folder and in the CivIII Props folder and I could only access them from the props folder.

No, it is quite easy to have as many folders as you like. I have a seperate runtime for just Civ3 files. And, I have more than one prop folder. I have "my in work props", "my finished props", "my released props", and the general one for Utahjazz7's and Kinboats props.
But except for basically keeping track of stuff as I am making it, I keep civ3 props basically lumped together. The hair and the sheilds are not seperated, though it is possible to do so.

Jul 11, 2007, 08:17 PM
Yes following Utahs tutorial you make several new folders in the libraries/ charecter pose and props. I moved the CivIII Hair one to the props folder and it works fine. Maybe the libraries/Hair can only be accessed from the hair room. As I become more familiar with the program I'm sure I'll find out.

Plotinus
Jul 12, 2007, 03:50 AM
Maybe the libraries/Hair can only be accessed from the hair room.

No, the Hair Room is for making really realistic hair, follicle by follicle (as you might for a leaderhead or something that requires that kind of detail), rather than the one-piece wig sort of hair that you would use for a unit. The Hair library contains one-piece wig hairs, which do function exactly like props - I don't know what the difference is. Certainly all the objects you'll find on this site can go in either Figures or Props.

BadKharma
Jul 12, 2007, 08:06 AM
OK......follicle by follicle that sounds like a very tedious prospect.

Plotinus
Jul 12, 2007, 08:26 AM
Well, it's not really quite like that. You don't have to make every follicle, although you have great control over them individually if you want. But Poser draws the hair follicle by follicle, so it looks like realistic hair, quite different from just plonking a hair prop on top of his hair. It does take a long time to render, but it can look really good. I used it for my Haile Selassie leaderhead.

Most of the hair (I'm assuming you mean the Bond Hair and the Angel Hair, etc.) must be imported, as they are .3ds objects (or is it a different type of .obj files? I forget...)

Plotinus
Jul 09, 2008, 06:10 AM
If you convert Poser figures to 3DS format they do become solid objects without any rigging. But it's ready-rigged for Poser and anything else that can use figures in Poser format.

Stromboli
Jul 09, 2008, 06:30 AM
I'd be opening it with for example, Wings 3D. This is exclusively a modelling program: No animations or renders can be done with it. Would the rigging disappear if I didn't use poser? It's prohibitively expensive...

Daz Studio (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/software/studio/-/?&_m=d) is compatible with Poser figures, and it's free. I haven't used it though so I don't know what it's like.

Like Plotinus said, you could get Daz Studio if you don't have the money for Poser. Daz is easy to handle, it only lacks the material room, and you can't change the props' colors. Anyone here with Poser can send you colored props the way you want them. I'd be happy to, just ask :)

FIGURES

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/surcoat_2_6S9.png
Download (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10029&act=down). The surcoat conforms to Kinboat's paperdoll and is made to be worn over the PDM TShirt/Shirt and pants. The legs, however, do not match the paperdoll's. They are controlled on their own—almost as if you were using the morph's of one of the kilt figures or props. Left_2 and Right_2 match with the paperdoll's thighs. Left_3 and Right_3 match with the paperdoll's shins. I would not recommend moving Left_1 and Right_1; they are buffers between the hip and the legs.
