View Full Version : 250x250 Earth Map Needed
alms66 May 28, 2005, 11:02 PM I need someone to create a 250x250 Earth Map using the Robinson Projection for a mod I'm developing. I've been using Rhye's 180x180 map thus far, but I'd like to go with something bigger. This map should also have correct starting locations for all standard C3C civs, if it's not too much trouble. If you're interested in doing the map, please email me.
alms66 May 29, 2005, 08:34 PM After a little more testing, I think I'm going to reduce the mapsize somewhat, 250x250 is a bit too "roomy". It will now be 210x210. So if there's some great map maker out there than can put this together, email or PM me, or just let me know right here in this thread, whichever you prefer.
I'm thinking I'll give some sort of compensation to whoever does the map, though I'm not sure what's reasonable just yet. So if you've got the skills and the time, let me know, and let me know what you'd like as compensation as well (be reasonable please) :p. Also, let me know how long you think the job would take. Links to any previous maps you've made would be useful to judge the "winner" as well.
alms66 May 31, 2005, 12:36 PM One more bump before I start a new thread for this, seeing as the title of this one is now a bit misleading and doesn’t mention the fact that I’m willing to pay for this...
Since I haven’t gotten any offers yet, for whatever reason, and I figured I’d get at least one over the weekend, I thought I’d go ahead and clarify a few things.
First, I’ll clear up the compensation I spoke of. Since I believe that the map will take about a month to create, what I’d like to do is offer a month’s salary, unfortunately I’m not rich , so I can’t afford to do that. What I can afford at the moment is $100 (US). If I can afford a little more at the time of completion (the map’s completion that is), I’d be willing to pay a little more to get this done well. For obvious reasons, I’d rather not send cash through the mail, so you’d need to let me know if you’d rather use paypal (and I don’t have an account so I’d rather not have to set one up, just for this one time), some site’s (Amazon?) gift certificate program, a physical gift certificate mailed to you, or some other method of payment. Once you’ve contacted me (via PM preferably), we’ll talk more about the payment.
Second, I’ll clear up some of the map specs. The size of the map is still in flux, until I get someone working on this. Though my first real test at 210x210 is promising, it does slow down a little bit too much for my liking, so I might reduce the size again to 200x200 – that’s the smallest map I’m willing to live with for the sake of speeding up turn-times. I’d like the correct starting locations for every standard C3C civ on the map as well, but since I’ll be replacing some standard civs with other civs (in order to even-out civ-distribution on the world map), and I haven’t finalized which ones at this point, I can live without the starting locations for a bit if you’re not up to it. I’d still like links to any previous maps you’ve done, so that I can compare quality between all interested mapmakers.
And finally, let’s clear up what this mod is all about and what the map is needed for. The first real mod I enjoyed for civ3 was Double Your Pleasure (DyP). It had so many new units, wonders, improvements and technologies – so much detail… so many choices… I thought it was the best mod ever made. Then came Rhye’s of Civilization (RoC)– another great mod. It lacked the incredible detail of DyP, but it made up for it in even better slowed exploration and expansion than in DyP, not to mention the great historical accuracy of the world map. Then DyP was updated to Conquests and renamed Rise and Rule (RaR). When I played RaR, I missed elements of RoC, when I played RoC, I missed elements of RaR, it was a bit frustrating, but the solution was simple… Combine RaR with RoC, using all the great concepts of both mods. I could have just copied everything I wanted from both mods, but IMO that would have diminished both of those mods, and that’s not something I want to do. So, I began designing a new mod, borrowing the core concepts that made RaR and RoC so great, but with a completely fresh design.
That's where it stands at the moment. I'll be releasing more info on the mod as time goes on.
viper275 Jun 01, 2005, 01:25 PM I might do this if no one else already is going to (no need to pay me either). Just realize that it may be a little while since I'm pretty busy at the moment.
AFAIK Rhye is the only one that made Robinson projection maps (bigger ones use projections like Miller, but a big one with Robinson would be good). He made a 180x180, a 170x170, and a 134x130, I think.
Edit: Was there anything else different about this that you want (for example, Rhye's maps [particularly the 134x130 one] have a slightly larger Europe. Would you want something like that so that there is enough room to have the European civs there?)
alms66 Jun 01, 2005, 02:22 PM No, I want accurate terrain, not distorted as in Rhye's map.
Ekmek Jun 01, 2005, 02:30 PM I thought Marla Singer's Map was 255x255?
alms66 Jun 01, 2005, 03:10 PM I thought Marla Singer's Map was 255x255?
It's 256x256, and I believe there's a larger version (which isn't square - 302x256 or something like that) floating around out there, but it uses Miller's projection, which is just garbage IMO (not the map - the projection :D).
viper275 Jun 01, 2005, 04:14 PM One more thing: did you want resources, barb camps, and so on, or did you want a "clean" map?
Edit: Also, for the size. How about a compromise of something like 230x200 or something like that?

Resources would be good, barbs could be good too, if you could locate them in correct locations. Regarding the size, why would you want to do 230x200?
Here's an image of what I'd like to see (except I'd like to see the map shifted in such a way as to have no landmasses "crossing" the east/west boundary of the map - if possible while still maintaining accuracy):
viper275 Jun 02, 2005, 10:31 AM Never mind about the 230x200 thing. I thought that it would help because these maps of earth seem pretty rectangular rather than a perfect square. It didn't really work, though.
As far as the continents go, only a few Alaskan islands should do that. However, like Rhye's, the Pacific Ocean will be small and Hawaii will be moved over a bit to be cut out. That is because with Robinson's, since the earth in the image is circular and the earth in civ is rectangular, you have to cut off the edges.
viper275 Jun 16, 2005, 11:35 PM Sorry to say this, but I don't have the time, for one thing, and I am having extreme difficulty making it. I even tried bmp2bic and it wasn't that good. So, you may want to look for something else. I might continue to work with it, and I'll post it if it's good, but I can't guarantee it.
alms66 Jun 17, 2005, 12:33 PM Thanks for trying anyway, Viper. In a few days I'll be posting more about the mod and the list of "needed" items to complete it - including the world map. I've been busy myself so I've fallen behind schedule a bit already... but I'll be catching up soon. ;)
