How about mass-upgrading units instead of being bussy a whole round or two with upgrading?

You can do that in Civ3; press Shift-U to upgrade all of one type of unit.

But still, this only works for units being present in a city with a barracks. Units of the same type but somewhere else you still have to trace down with the military advisor.
Furthermore, you have to have enough gold for it.

And as Commander Bello hinted at, it can take quite a while to cycle all your troops to cities with barracks so that can upgrade.
