View Full Version : City Preview: Martian Cities

Since I was unable to convince varwnos to make Martian cities I decided to take a shot at them. Here is what I have so far for size1.

There going to have SM's mars terrain so I can get the transparancy of the greenhouse to look right.

What kind of texture should I put on the Living Structure?

Good! Can I download it there?

looks good how it is, but i would put maybe a row of cabins or something sort of under the two structures you already have there. but it looks great :D

Timing is everything. Here is another set of martian cities. Figured best to post on vbraun's thread as it was just made today.

We could use 5 different set's of cities on Mars.

So consider these candidates for the second set.

Edit: @ vbraun
BTW, I like what you have done so far on yours, nice greenhouse.

I still need to add to mine, suggestions welcome.

It's quite nice.
I like the greenhouse.
In my opinion, if possible, you should go for a Biosphere like dome(in case you don't know, a project based on Earth for a possibility of colonising Mars with similar techniques that failed--still quite fitting).

Looks very nice, vbraun! :)

The reason I went for a type of cylinder rather then dome is becasue when going through google images searching for "future mars" all living areas were infact cylinders. Maybe for the last size I could do a dome.

I added a flag and some details to the greenhouse you can't really see. The flag lets this be culture specific. :)

Will look great in your mod :)!

Hm, is there a way you can have different colours for each civ that uses the city, according to its own civ colours?
Or did you just mean that you can make many different flags?

vbraun
May 30, 2005, 11:50 AM
I meant you can just make diffrant flags. Civ-coloring on cities does not work.

vbraun

Here is an attempt at the second size. I simply made the greenhouse bigger and added a housing area. I was going to add a dome for communication back to Earth but it didn't look all that great. I also made the flag be the US flag.

Where did you get the graphics from?

I like them EXTREMELY

:D

I made them in Blender (http://www.blender3d.com). :)

IT could be use also for irrigation on modern scenario, I think

The stuff looks really cool!
Just the greenhouse looks a little bit bright but this might just be because of the preview. (would be interesting to see them on he martian terrain)
The red buildings at Pounders cities look a bit confusing (should they be skyscrapers or a kind of tank?)

I've decided against making a dome for the last size. It just doesn't fit into my mod. I'm just going to double the amount of greenhouse from second size and make the permant building 3 storys instead of 1.

Here's what they look like on SM's Mars terrain:

Here's a preview of all 3 sizes:

The new building is a dedicated reaserch facility.

They look good, all though I think size 3 should have a few more buildings...

What kind of buildings do you have in mind?

I'm sorry to hear that you are not going to have domes in the graphics. They might look very good indeed for the largest cities.

...thinking of Robinson's Mars Trilogy here...

Pounder: could you perhaps make a large dome-like structure as a large city model?

EuropeanFury
May 31, 2005, 09:07 PM
I think a few more of the same....if you look at the normal game 'large' city game graphics, you'll see they have a good number of buildings...more of the same/sort of the same would be good.

Or were you talking of a single dome for the city.

@ vbraun:
what about some antennas or satellite uplink or something like that....

@ pounder:
I like this kind of domes better than the first one... and I think they will even look better at the martian terrain...

hey, how about someone making those greenhouses good for irrigation? pleease?

Vbraun: do you have a link to an easy to follow tutorial for 'blender'? (i think you said you use that program)

They would look good as irrigation, but the problem with adding buildings to irrigation files is that roads get built over top of them and look bad because of it.

The only place they could be added would be on the roads or rails file if you want them to remain intack.

Abaddon
Jun 03, 2005, 04:21 PM
well it would kinda make sence if it comes with railroad....

vbraun
Jun 03, 2005, 06:20 PM
@varwnos-There's lots at www.blender3d.org

@all- Should I make a walled version? All it would be is a wall made out of martian rocks.

Kyriakos
Jun 03, 2005, 06:25 PM
Perhaps the walled version could have a kind of magnetic forcefield? In the form of a quasi-transparent dome that is

vbraun
Jun 03, 2005, 06:28 PM
That would actually be really easy to implament.

flamescreen
Jun 05, 2005, 08:27 AM
Great stuff you got yourself there.
A forcefield would be great, not too realistic perhaps(depending on when the mod starts), but the reason to do graphics is making them look nice anyway.

So blender's that good in creating things? I'll have to dig it up one of these days. Btw, personally, I don't mind the buildings count. As long as it looks different enough from the previous size and this does.

Also, a link for the Biosphere project is case you want to make something like it in the close or distant future:

I like what you did, Pounder!

How hard would it be to have the largest size city a simple extremely large dome with a whole cityful of buildings showing through? Some exterior buildings would still exist, but the main city would be under a huge almost transparent dome...

Here is a forcefeild around the city:

Nice forcefield, but you might want to add some other building that is responsible for creating the forcefield, perhaps a visible antenna or something?

I think that we should also ask ourselves if city building using 3d programs is the way to go. I may try it anyway, at least for having the main set complete, and then pixel by pixel work can be done. Btw pixel by pixel can create amazing results, some civ2 cities i have seen lately are incredible (the apolyton non-unit graphics page are where they can be seen)

I would go pixel by pixel but,
1. I don't have the patience
2. I already know how to use Blender fairly well.
3 You can change things really easy using a 3d program.

Maybe some 3d work to start and then pixel by pixel post work would be the best.

using a 3d proigram can help with creating different forms for the city, i am working on that atm.

Btw how can you make blender 'an offer it cannot refuse' to make the showdows a bit more complicated? Since atm it is just a flat black, and shadows are what i mostly need it for as far as cities go ;)

Hey, vbraun, could you send me the model of the forcefield in .3ds? I'd like to use it in some fortification i'm thinking, if that;s alright with you(I understand you might want it for personal use only for the moment.

If so, PM me and I'll provide you with my email.
