View Full Version : Charles F Adams DD WIP
vingrjoe Jun 02, 2005, 09:17 AM This is the Charles F. Adams class destroyer I'm working on. I'm making it to add into El Justo's TCW scenario. The model is done, and right now I'm working on the animation. As with all my ships, it is in scale with all the others I have made, but since this is an early Cold War destroyer, it is quite small. So, I may have to go against my standards, and possibly enlarge it and bring it out of scale with my other ships. Here is a preview of the finished model, built from scratch using photos and line drawings. Again, a real scale plastic model would have greatly improved accuracy, but I don't need my closets full of plastic ship models either.
vingrjoe Jun 02, 2005, 09:19 AM This is what the scale Charles F. Adams looks like ingame next to my WWII Iowa class battleship. As you can see, the Iowa dwarfs it, but that is the correct scale to the real life ships.
la_dav Jun 02, 2005, 10:30 AM it's so small...... Do you can ......??!
Antiochus VII Jun 02, 2005, 11:23 AM It looks fantastic, all the more so for being small in the in-game shot - but does it match up well with the other destroyer types is my main question?
Wyrmshadow Jun 02, 2005, 11:43 AM my destroyers are all about 120 pixels long, if that gives you any idea for a larger scale.
Halidon55 Jun 02, 2005, 12:45 PM Nice work. Any plans on building a PT boat with firing torpedoes?
vingrjoe Jun 02, 2005, 03:51 PM Thanks Wyrmshadow, I'll check into it.
Halidon55, as of the moment, no I have no PT boats planned as of yet. I have too many larger ships sailing around in my head.
Antiochus, the Firaxis destroyer is big compared to this destroyer.
vingrjoe Jun 02, 2005, 04:02 PM Well, my Iowa BB is 171 pixels long.
Wyrmshadow, I have your fletcher class DD and that is 113 pixels long, close to what you said your average destroyer length was.
What I may do is have Carriers, Battleships and larger Cruisers in one scaling group and smaller Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates and Escorts in another scaling group.
W.i.n.t.e.r Jun 02, 2005, 04:31 PM You have the coolest talent to choose universaly useable models :) America, Australia, Germany and Greece had these :) very nicely useable :)

vingrjoe Jun 02, 2005, 04:49 PM Here is the Charles F. Adams next to alot of my other ships and next to the Firaxis destroyer. As you can see, the Firaxis destroyer is grotesquely disproportionate to the other ships.

yup, yet I third the request for a larger scale C F Adams :) wann be able to see the details on this beautiful creation of yours
Wyrmshadow Jun 02, 2005, 10:35 PM What I may do is have Carriers, Battleships and larger Cruisers in one scaling group and smaller Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates and Escorts in another scaling group.
That pretty much what I have planned. Large capital ships are one scale while the smaller ones share a different scale.
vingrjoe Jun 03, 2005, 01:54 PM I enlarged the destroyer by 20%. I think it looks better now. This screenshot is actual size of the units ingame. The destroyer measures at 101 pixels long, which would be in proportion with the Spraunce class destroyer which will be 118-120 pixels, since it shares the same hull as the Ticonderoga class CG.

Its going into the right direction :) see Wyrm's WWII destroyers in comparison above
TopGun Jun 03, 2005, 06:36 PM I would leave it at the correct --proportional-- size. Don't make it bigger.
W.i.n.t.e.r Jun 03, 2005, 07:25 PM problem would be that that would make it
a) too small for anyone to see what ship type it is, along with all the details of the model
b) would be smaller than all other ships out there, including Wyrmshadow's E/S-Boats and Submarines (also smaller than the Civ3 submarine, btw)
c) smaller than all other already existent "fellow" destroyers of whatever age :(
Bjornlo Jun 03, 2005, 07:47 PM I think that exact scale between units is not possible.
For example, the battleships in the game are not nearly as large (in scale) as they should be to the cruisers. The same can be said of the destroyers <> cruisers.
So long as the unit is made to be consistent with some scale (Firaxis, Wyrmshadow, whatever) there will be a body of units it looks good with.
vingrjoe Jun 03, 2005, 08:33 PM Well, I'm leaving it at the size it is now: 20% larger than it's original size, no bigger. It will be labeled, like all the units ingame. So if someone cannot tell a destroyer from a cruiser, they only need to look at the unit's name/description.
Wyrmshadow Jun 03, 2005, 09:00 PM No one should force their opinions upon unit makers, otherwise we stop making anything.
Always remember what I say about committees: F---'em.
Wyrmshadow Jun 03, 2005, 10:06 PM Well the reason why I made mine as large as I did... it was because of that annoying pixel problem. But that has now been mostly solved so who know's how my future stuff will look.

:) sounds- interesting ... :)

W.i.n.t.e.r:
What are the 3rd and 4th ships from the top?
Goldflash Jun 04, 2005, 10:18 AM I say you make it propper scale.
W.i.n.t.e.r Jun 04, 2005, 11:56 AM 3rd = "Akizuki", Japanese destroyer class (by Wyrmshadow)
4th = "York", British Hv. Cruiser Class (by Akula)*
5th = "Gnevny", Soviet destroyer class (by Wyrmshadow)
*mentioning scale- this cruiser was smaller in scale to the newer creations, yet good enough a unit- luck had it that it looks amazingly a lot like the destroyers Britain had built during that time. So it was a no brainer to make it a keeper- yet my mod features it as a destroyer of the A-I Class(es) instead of a cruiser. However, unfortunately not all of Akula's makings did fit in as nicely (her "Edinburgh" resembles- well just the Edinburgh herself and is dwarfed by even the Z destroyer)
---
Edit:
here I got another example: Akulas Cruisers vs. Wyrmshadow's Bismarck-Scale=> same ship - different world...
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/Snap11.jpg
1st = HMS "Hood", Hood Battlecruiser class (by Wyrmshadow)
2nd = Hms "Hood", Hood Battlecruiser class (by Akula)
3rd = "Renown" Class Cruiser (by Akula)
4th = "Edinburgh" Class Cruiser (by Akula)
El Justo Jun 04, 2005, 12:34 PM vingrjoe,
once again, this is one helluva ship. the scale, imo, is just right. :goodjob:
firaxis is the one who is off-scale!

'Firaxis' and 'scale' in one sentence can safely be called an oximoron (stress goes on the "i"):lol::lol:
El Justo Jun 07, 2005, 09:13 AM how's it coming vingrjoe?
vingrjoe Jun 07, 2005, 09:15 AM I have the AttackB (guns) and death left to animate. Depending upon my schedule, a week or less.
El Justo Jun 07, 2005, 09:23 AM muy bueno mi amigo!

Great! Units will keep geting smaller and smaller until... "Where's the unit?" "Here use the magnifying glass." "Oh! Now I see it... sort of...."
vingrjoe Jun 07, 2005, 01:00 PM P-51D, no one is forcing you to use my units, or anybody else's custom units. If you don't like the size, or something else about it, fine don't use it. Some of us creators do not like Firaxis' cartoonish, disproportionate units, but rather prefer scaled units. Instead of complaining about what all of us creators do for free, why don't you make your own units.
BTW people, the ship is done. It can be found in the units forum.
